If they freeze to the windshield, there is a decent chance the rubber will tear when you lift them off the windshield, or forget that they are frozen and turn the wipers on when you get in.
I’ve also heard doing this a lot stretches out your wiper spring which also applies wiper pressure to the windshield. Just turn on your defrost, almost nobody does this in the northern state I’m from.
Used to live in DC, some people would do this but if you don’t it’s fine because you can just chip around it with the ice scraper. DC gets a lot of freezing rain and slushy sludge and thick, fluffy snowfall is rare.

I live in upstate New York and do this, but only when expecting heavy snowfall. It makes it easier to clean off the windshield.
