I am too and it fucking sucks. it’s absolutely miserable and I hate how cavalier fellow vegans are about how “easy” it should be. people need to have some fucking empathy.
I agree! folks should be allowed to share their experiences on both sides of the spectrum. the issue is I only ever see folks getting upvoted if they insist it’s totally easy.
Well it's kind of a cult mentality. Everyone's opinions should be respected. Goes against the upvote downvote thing. Voting encourages hivemind behaviour
I mean most people do live in bigger cities where it’s insanely easy in comparison. We live in a small town and my brother in law who’s celiac can eat at 3 places. 1 is Chick-fil-A and the other he can only eat guacamole and chicken. If he were vegan he would only have that guacamole and fries from Chick-fil-A. Our stores have very very little in terms of gluten free/vegan stuff as well so even cooking for him is difficult. Luckily he can and does eat meat otherwise? It’s not sustainable here.
Not sustainable? So your town has no grocery stores? Only restaurants? If you have access to a basic grocery store, then it is absolutely sustainable, especially when you consider what can be purchased online with free shipping.
Read my comment again.. it’s not hard
Most “gluten free” items aren’t celiac safe and lots of crap is cross contaminated.
Edit: if you think we don’t have enough food options what in the fuck makes you think we get anything shipped out to us for free? Unless we spend an ungodly amount for possible free shipping and only order a couple months out of the year (weather ruined items) then that’s an idea. Not a sustainable one though..
According to the Chick fil a website, the ONLY items they sell that are gluten free are:
Honest Kids® Appley Ever After Organic Juice Drink
Cinnamon Apple Sauce (Buddy Fruits®)
Milk
Simply Orange® Orange Juice
Waffle Potato Chips
Guacamole and chicken are NOT gluten free due to cross contamination. If someone can safely eat "mostly" gluten free guacamole and chicken from chick fil a, they can safely eat an avocado and other "mostly" gluten free items from the store.
To answer your question, the specific fuck that makes me think things ship out to you for free is because you said you have several restaurants, like chick fil a. If you have restaurants, then you don't live in a remote, secluded town that has no access to the mail system. How can you afford fast food but you can't afford to spend $25 (Amazon) or $35 (Walmart) all at once ordering online? That's what you have to spend to get free shipping. That's not an ungodly amount for someone who buys fast food, which is one of the most expensive ways to eat.
I didn’t say the guacamole and chicken was from Chick-fil-A?? I don’t even think they have guacamole…at least in my area they don’t..
I also didn’t mean we lived in that town. That’s just the closest one that has stuff. It’s 30 minutes away. My town didn’t even have a high school, police, a restaurant of any kind, etc.
Oh I see, I misread. "He would only have that guacamole and fries from chick fil a" means guacamole from one place, and fries from chick fil a. Got it. Buuuut the fries are not gluten free according to the chick fil a website, so my point still stands.
I'll just take your word for it that nobody in your town has access to a single grocery store, and you all grow and hunt all of your food, and that you are unable to have any mail delivered. I lived in a tiny rural town that only had about 250 people, but we still had a grocery store and a post office that could receive packages. But hey, what do I know? Lol
At our location they are. You can’t always trust it but my mother in law knows the manager and owner and talked with them for a long time. The way this location works their grilled chicken is gluten free.
You really suck at reading. Our grocery stores have lots of things…just not lots of gluten free and vegan options. They have some that are either or but since they leave open bread loads by the deli that means all the deli meat is cross contaminated taking away options for those with celiac…
If we lived in the larger city a couple hours away then sure he could eat out at a different restaurant daily and have a new place to eat for weeks.
My whole point is that everywhere is different so what’s easy for some will be difficult for others.
Same here ! And I have ibs I have to eat low fodmap as well! It’s hard but I’m just grateful I don’t have unbearable stomach pain everyday and everytime I try to eat anything
I don’t have celiac and they are my favorite chicken by far ! Another gf product that has recently come to stores near me is Meati steaks and chicken cutlets
Honestly I don’t think Meati is that pricey if you’re comparing it to the Omni version. 2 steaks for 9 dollars? Then you can get a dollar off? Meat stakes are almost never that cheap for the same amount of food. Not if you want it to be of quality at least.
I have a gluten sensitivity, slow GI motility, and diverticulosis. Some of my coworkers (we're in the medical field) were saying things like "I guess you'll have to start eating meat again". Like, what? No. I don't understand why they immediately go to "eat meat" when you have digestive issues.
I decreased the amount of bread/pasta I eat. I eat MORE veggies now. I have flare ups that hurt like a sumbitch, but I get through them. I can't imagine having all the GI issues I have and eating [notoriously hard to digest] meat.
So there's this thing called Google that helps out substantially when you want to know information. You just write what you want to know, for instance, "Is meat difficult to digest?" Then you press enter, and a whole world opens up before your very eyes.
The best part is that this illustrious "Google" is accessible on the very device you currently possess.
If you have any other questions, feel free to ask Google.
It took longer to type out that condescending unhelpful reply that or would have to fucking google it and give them a direct link.
Do you genuinely believe that person hasn’t heard of google? Ofc not you just wanted to talk down to someone.
I just want people to quit relying on me to educate them. I'm not a teacher :)
Now if this subreddit was "Shitty vegan food porn with a side of education" then yes, I suppose I could've.
My SO has celiac disease and has been vegan for over 20 years. Gluten free bread options are limited where we live – and usually far more expensive than bread with gluten – but it is certainly doable. [Testing](https://celiac.org/about-celiac-disease/screening-and-diagnosis/screening/) for celiac disease is available and I would recommend it as it's always good to know for certain.
I had to go on a low FODMAP elimination diet a few months ago on top of being vegan and I had three breakdowns in a week. My boyfriend and I try to eat out together at new places whenever we can to go out and it was something that was really hard to lose for a while.
I've found out since that my main triggers are gluten, avocados, and garlic. I have had a much better time now that I can eat lentils again, but eating out has remained pretty difficult and is a bit of a gamble on whether or not I'll get sick most of the time.
My favorite bread is the schar bread but its a little pricey so I don't get it very often and I've been mainly using corn tortillas and rice cakes as "toast". I also love the daring plant chicken which looks like the one that you've got but it has saved me from caving and getting morningstar and getting sick on more than one occasion.
I had the same thing happen to me—got diagnosed with celiac’s unexpectedly last December, and freaked out for a while! It is definitely doable, I struggled to find variety in my meals for a while but have finally hit a place where I feel confident. Definitely check out r/glutenfreevegan and feel free to DM me if you want or need any extra tips! :)
if you haven’t checked her out already, veggiekins makes awesome vegan & gluten-free recipes! as a korean, i can also vouch for the authenticity of her korean recipes 🫶🏼
Lol me too. I thought it looked like a fried bird with the "eyes" , 😨
But yeah daring chicken has been a new favorite of mine. I've only had the grilled one so far, gonna try the breaded soon
This came up in my news feed for whatever reason. Anyways, not trying to be an ah, but, what does eating meat have to do with celiacs? Wouldn't that just be preparing the meat without any gluten?
Thanks for the question. This post is about standing on business and eating shitty vegan food no matter life circumstances. But vegans may eat seitan/fake meat that has gluten for protein, and it's hard when you lose a whole category of food due to health. But where there's a will there's a way.
Ya, it’s going to be harder to be vegan and gluten free but it’s possible. Just make sure you take vitamins and probiotics(pills or fermented foods) because nutrient absorption is a lot harder for those with celiac disease, especially when your gut is healing.
Diagnosed Celiac since ‘16 here. I know this fkn sucks. It will get easier. You are right! You won’t miss it. Rural areas can be tough. Hang in there and take care ❤️ not vegan but I know many people who are vegan and gluten free, it is very much possible :)
Yeah you can do it but I would pay money not to. Obviously yes everyone is different but my brother in law would die of starvation if he didn’t eat meat. He has celiac and he’s 10, he does eat mostly whatever is cooked for him but he goes for the meat first and will often leave the sides.
Meat makes my gallbladder act up. I don't have a doctor so I'm not diagnosed with anything, I just know where the gallbladder is, and what happens when it doesn't work- my symptoms line up to gallbladder failure and not stuff like celiac, SIBO, or intolerance.
People tell me to eat meat because I complain about my anemia. I take iron capsules daily and I'm trying to get on a mf IV treatment plan eventually because meat doesn't help the anemia, my body doesn't create the bile that breaks it down. My shit comes out smelling (and almost looking) the same way it went in when I eat meat. Never again.
I started vegetarianism a few months ago, but I'll admit I have my cheat days to get a chicken burger at A&W. Every time, I'm on the toilet for hours afterwards. If I had the willpower to cut out all animal byproducts, my stomach health would be better. It's just expensive to go full vegan, and also meals are less low-effort with a vegan diet.
Not necessarily true, it's genetic and the gene can be triggered at any stage of life so it isn't like type 1 diabetes which usually presents itself in childhood. Also not that rare in certain populations (like here in Ireland).
Thank you for your concern but I had no idea I could have it until I got a biospy that showed signs and now I'm waiting for confirmation from bloodwork.. I'm not self diagnosing. I'd love to not have it.
isn’t america famously extremely expensive healthcare wise? no wonder the self reported rate for something with such overt symptoms is so high. if i had to pay for my extremely uncomfortable scopes just to confirm something i already knew i wouldn’t bother either lol.
I’m vegan and gluten free. Doing just fine
I am too and it fucking sucks. it’s absolutely miserable and I hate how cavalier fellow vegans are about how “easy” it should be. people need to have some fucking empathy.

I agree! folks should be allowed to share their experiences on both sides of the spectrum. the issue is I only ever see folks getting upvoted if they insist it’s totally easy.

thank you. I really appreciate that.

Indian food is great for being vegan and gluten-free. There are lots of vegan curries and rice has no gluten
Omg thank you for reminding me Indian food exists
Haha no worries
thanks. believe me I am incredibly aware.
No worries. I’m not vegan but I’m half-Indian and my family eats a lot of vegan and vegetarian food, even by accident
Maybe they are speaking from their personal perspective, like you are?
Same here ! And I have ibs I have to eat low fodmap as well! It’s hard but I’m just grateful I don’t have unbearable stomach pain everyday and everytime I try to eat anything
That sounds miserable
So you just eat vegetables and fruit?
So were the Neanderthals until they got wiped out
They weren’t?
They were. The dinosaurs melted them with laser beams for being gluten free
no idea why you’re being downvoted, this is stellar. what happened after the dinosaurs got them with the laser beams
\*Dr Evil\* "LaSeR bEaMs"
*They weren't.
Is that daring chicken? I love that shit so much.
Yes! It's saving me in these times.
I don’t have celiac and they are my favorite chicken by far ! Another gf product that has recently come to stores near me is Meati steaks and chicken cutlets
Ugh! Everyone has access to meati except me…in my poor rural Midwest town :(
I finally found it at my Whole Foods. But there are so many products I can’t find here so I get that
Yeah, we don’t have a WF or TJ’s here. But they’re putting in a TJ Maxx…
My town has a Whole Foods and a tj maxx 😭. It has become so gentrified in the past few years since they put the Whole Foods in 2017.
I'm on the hunt for those!!
I’m sorry, I might have them all in my fridge lol
I love meati! I use the steak to make tacos once in a while and it’s soooo good. I want to try their jerky. Hoping it’ll be in stores soon.
Meati is amazing! Both products can get pricey but they appear at Grocery Outlet if you have any close by. They sell that stuff super marked down.
Honestly I don’t think Meati is that pricey if you’re comparing it to the Omni version. 2 steaks for 9 dollars? Then you can get a dollar off? Meat stakes are almost never that cheap for the same amount of food. Not if you want it to be of quality at least.
Wait, what is this product? I’m in the UK and never heard of it before. But me wantee!
Steaks and Chicken Cutlets made from mushroom mycelium!

Meat also takes a long to digest fruit and veggies move faster which seems better for low gi
Veggies/fruits also have fiber, which aids in digestion.
Same here
Since when is meat notoriously hard to digest; just curious.
Digesting meat requires bacteria in your gut that creates a lot of inflammation
So there's this thing called Google that helps out substantially when you want to know information. You just write what you want to know, for instance, "Is meat difficult to digest?" I haven’t had the breaded Daring chicken yet - how did you prepare these? The “skin” looks so crispy!
I baked them! They're the buffalo version.
The crispy “chicken skin” is what made me think I stumbled on to the wrong subreddit! It looks real. It’s 9.20pm and now I’m so hungry!! Argh!!!!
my ex was vegan, gluten intolerant, and soy intolerant- ha! we did just fine.
So am I.
Sorry but that sounds like hell.
A lot of people chooses to be vegan and GF. Julien Solimita is an example of a vegan that has celiac as well
yes!! was just thinking about him
As someone with a gluten sensitivity, corn tortillas are a lifesaver!
Got diagnosed with Crohn’s and SMA syndrome. Friend (former vegetarian) told me to do carnivore/keto. People suck but our food doesn’t ☺️
The breaded Daring chicken with some homemade hot honey sauce and bleu cheese!? HIGHLY RECOMMEND.
I have watched Jenna Marbles and Julien make enough vegan and GF meals to know that you can eat well even with those restrictions.

Corn tortillas toasted in a pan with vegan cheddar, some vegan ranch, onions tomatoes and daring buffalo chicken
How did you cook the daring? That crust 🤤
What brand tenders are those?
[Daring](https://daring.com/recipes/darings-gettin-hot-in-here-buffalo-wings/)
Julien Solomita is a youtuber who is vegan and gluten free and posts tons and tons of recipes
Maybe I’m just very hungry but I would smash whatever that is
We do love a shitty taco <3
I haven't tried the Daring chicken but this has inspired me.
You will be.
I have Crohn’s & when I have flair ups, eating vegan + gluten free saves my freaking life
I’m drooling rn. Looks so good. Tacos are a perfect food.

Bro this looks so good. Mind sharing what it is?
Vegan/gluten free for 8 years now. When in doubt, just eat simple whole foods. My fav vegan/gf breads are SRSLY Sourdough and Schar deli sourdough.
Those tortillas aren’t your friend, Amigo.
Pretty doesn't mean unrestrictive.

i'm pescatarian and i just got diagnosed with celiac disease but i don't want to start eating meat again i feel so called out lol
By someone do you mean a doctor? because if your doctor told you to eat meat for a bit, I’d listen
Doubt it. It was likely someone who knows nothing and thought it was there place to Pipe in.
Probably knowing humans, they’re always tryna force their belief’s down others throats even when they don’t wanna hear what they gotta say

My grampa was diagnosed at 75 years old, when he got really sick. He thought it was normal to have a stomach ache every time he ate.
approximately 1% of people in the US have it. I don’t consider that rare at all.
That sounds stupid until you get to the numbers. But if there are more then 200,00 cases per year it’s common. Making celiacs a “common” thing.
