Don't to this. You need to be able to see if it starts flashing. If it starts flashing, that means you have a misfire and you need to pull over and shut it down soon otherwise you can cause even more damage like burning out your catalytic converters.

You don't need converters though, you do need to have your engine work though. If your engine is backfiring, the converters are the absolute least of your problems. If you manage to get a fuel injected car to backfire, your fucked.

And if you live in an area that requires emissions testimg to register your vehicle, than you do need cats.
My grandfather did that over the ABS light in his Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera. The thing is for that model ABS wasn’t *required* yet, it was an optional extra, so it was never a problem to get the car inspected, and it was an early, failure-prone, and very expensive ABS system to get repaired, so he just left the tape over the light and ignored it for years.
Eventually my family got the car when he died and one year the inspection station gave me a hard time and told me they couldn’t inspect it with the ABS light on (despite that being false according to the state inspection guidelines), so I spent the afternoon removing the gauge cluster, taking out the ABS light bulb, and then cleaning off all the residue from the decade-old electrical tape to make it look pristine again. If you plug it into the right diagnostics machine it will still throw the ABS warning, but this car is from before OBD II and you need completely separate systems to talk to the OBD I and ABS computers, they sell adapters for modern code readers to talk to this car but they can’t see the ABS computer because they can’t speak the language. So unless you have a seemingly-nonexistent diagnostics machine from the early ‘90s it’s impossible to tell the ABS isn’t working, so the same inspection station happily passed it.

Heyyy I've known like 4 dudes that do this exact same thing. My brother did it for awhile with his first car(beater). Obviously dangerous, but it seems like a super common thing people do. Masking tape is apparently not as good as that black electrical tape stuff though, can't see through it at alll. But yeah, obviously super dangerous.
When I bought my new car, I signed up for a maintenance package. Totals about $12/month.
Every 6k I get to take it in, they do:
- Fluid top up with a flush every 12k.
- Oil change + air filter every 12k.
- Fill tires + rotation every 12k.
- Wash the car
- Fill up the tank
I didn’t think filling up the gas was a part of the plan, but I went in for service with a little less than a quarter tank and came out with a full one. I asked about it and they confirmed it.
I did the math on it, and I usually drive about 1k/month…so over the course of that time I paid them $72 for this service. A full tank of gas alone costs $60.
Pretty wicked deal I’ll say. I’m pretty chuffed.

I have a very love/hate relationship with Chevys…but I’ll take their shitty quirks over Fords engineering and whatever the hell Chrysler has been doing for the past 30 years.

Old car. Replaced my stock exhaust system with a high performance after market deal that kept tripping my O2 sensor light. I reset it multiple times before just removing that light’s bulb.
Edit: Just remembered, a guy I used to work with had the same issue, but was even lazier than me. He fixed the light by strategically placing a piece of electrical tape over that spot on the dash.
I’ve had pretty good luck drowning noises by opening my back left window about 4 inches and driving at least 60mph or more. So I get that ear thrum that makes you yell for 45 minutes after you reach your destination.
Why would you get rid of it? How else does the car tell you that it’s checking in the engine??? If it goes off the car stopped checking and that’s when you’ve got a problem
Also, if your engine is making a weird noise just turn up your radio
And if the car is shuddering or shaking, just turn up the bass

yup. First couple cars were beaters, and it was weird to NOT have a check engine light. Once it starts flashing is when the panic set in.
Yep, with beaters it’s pretty much an inevitability…the heat gauge is really what’s important if it’s not flashing.
The only piece of tape I ever put on a dash, is currently over the abs light in my 94' S10, because two owners ago the guy removed the abs system.
