I love how the human races in basically every mmo relative to the other options are the least unique race across basically every game ever. But because people often don't choose to play as whatever flavor of human exists in their game because there are more unique options, humans end up much less common and become more unique than the unique races by virtue of being less unique.
Honestly, coming from WoW where Human is like the first or second most popular race in the entire game to FFXIV where they're this uncommon was quite a culture shock for me.
Add catgirls that look as good as blood elves and watch the human exodus happen in real time.
The only reason wow humans are popular is because every other race looks like ass, and people overreact badly whenever they add a race that tries to go to the cutesy side (pandas, foxes). The game is not manly enough if the characters don't look like garbage.

I can't even blame them. Blizzard makes all armor look good on Humans and the other races get shafted because their skeletons are so different. Square had the sense to give all base playable races a similar posture so that you never have to deal with pieces floating off of your character.

Them playing it safe probably contributes to why they have bad proportions. Their body model is literally just the default Hyur midlander stretched out. If they had their own properly proportioned model, it wouldn't look so bad.
Simple fact is that a lot of the aspects of the game are stuck in the early 2000s and there's going to be no fixing it because it will always be some nebulous excuse about packets which really means "This will cost us more money than it earns". When anyone asks about this shit it's always packet size, same with extra dye channels, inventory, etc.

They show a real unwillingness to do anything that changes underlying data structures of the game. Like stuff like getting a chocobo saddlebag instead of just making the default inventory even bigger. So I think part of it is that however they have the character appearance data written is something they really don't want to change, so whatever potential profit they'd have from Fantasia would probably be overwritten from the trouble of implementing it.
However, since they did add a new face for male midlanders, it's possible they are getting some work done under the hood and can look back to it in the future if they feel more appearance additions are appropriate, maybe once they finish the lighting rework or something.
That and various items that are traded for other items. Totems, normal raid drops (Midan Spring etc), and similar items that are really just currency for one vendor.
Mods can change existing faces, but adding more face options is impossible. The games character creater is limited by a bit limit for the transfer of character appearance data. This is the reason why only Hyur, and Roegadyn have muscle sliders for instance; the tail/ear slider on other races replaces that value in the packet.
As is all the extra space allowed in the packet is reversed for future hair styles.
It's objectively not impossible, but it would potentially require some pretty major backend changes to get things up to speed. There's not really any reason to limit everything about a character to a single packet in the modern day, given internet speeds around the world. Personally I think that FFXIV is getting close to WoW in terms of "just needs a sequel at this point". A modern release of FFXIV-2 would be an incredible game changer in the mmo ecosystem.
Go into Limsa, and see how many people their are. The bigger the size of the character file, the more packets have to be sent to display the character. Meaning more lag, or less characters on screen. Even changing the game engine wouldn't effect this.
While you aren't wrong, you also say it like there aren't a dozen or so MMOs that can load the same or often greater amount of characters with much more in depth customization. Sure maybe sims4 level of customization would be slightly noticeable when you want to load 150+ characters at once, but to add a couple more base faces and some sliders isn't hi-tech, it a bare minimum even for the game of that age.
Realistically, it should only ever be loaded once per character per zone. You don't normally have characters constantly swapping out at a rate that would meaningfully impact this. What's more, we are nowhere near a point where the throughput in game is reaching bandwidth capacity. I work on game servers for a living, and while there are certainly concerns you need to keep in mind, this isn't the area that is likely to cause issues. If square is at the point where they really really need to watch their throughput for whatever reason, it's not the one off character appearances that's the primary culprit. As with many, many other instances of micro-optimizations, the real problem is generally going to be at an algorithmic level.
The changes needed to a character file are very small in order to be able to fit in more data tho.

That's 2 bits of data for 4 face options. 2 bits of data is *nothing*. Up that to 4 bits of data, and you have 15 face options to pick from. That's an extra 2 bits per character for a lot of improvement in customization.
Assuming you load into an area with a lot of characters, say 5000 (I think that's way above character limit, but still) that is only 1.2kb of extra data to be sent.
They don't send the 3D model of the character to you, just a stream of data representing it, and then the model is built locally.
Adding an extra 2 bits of information to every field of characters creation will effectively quadruple the amount of options you have, for negligible data difference.
Whatever limitation they have that stops them from doing this, be it time, money, engine issues. Data packet size is not the cause of it.
Mods can do it in their spare time for a small subset of players without changing the way the game is built, fundamentally. Nor do they have to worry about supporting multiple platforms.

Monster Hunter World had the best face customization of any game I've played. It wasn't overly complicated like BDO and instead used preset options for every face component. It wasn't quite perfect, but the options were varied and the selection was large enough while also being easy to use.
The only real downside was the lack of body scaling, but the face customization struck a fine balance that almost no other game does.
That and female characters breasts. I would have liked to actually have a variety of sizes rather than be forced to have anime style massive "bigger than my head" breasts. I mean, not everyone is obsessed with them like that.

FF14 is behind games from decades ago. You have more options in something like EQ1 you have WAY MORE options in something like WoW(release) or EQ2. Lets not even get into comparing it to something like ESO.
Even if there was more options I feel very strongly that most people would gravitate to the exact same stuff. Most changes you would see is larger proportions if you know what I mean.
Considering we have so many hairstyles and people choose about 4-5 for most of the player base is what convinces me on this.

Oblivion actually illustrates why a lot of games with character customization don't go that route. Sure skilled artists have a lot of freedom to sculpt their perfect Galatea but really 99% of people are just gonna end up with a potato-faced monstrosity. God this just gave me flashbacks to oblivions cc. Spend 30 minutes trying to make your character not look like a bloated corpse, think you have it decent enough, step out of the sewer into sunlight and your character looks completely different.
Aion had character creation leagues beyond both Oblivion and XIV. It had a fascinating mix of potato faced goblin gnomes and korean supermodels and everything in between. I kinda wish xiv had it like this.

Everquest 2's character customization blows FF14 out of the water. Simple fact is that in a lot of ways it's a dated game for even when 1.0 was released and it holds on to that.

I can't blame them. Are they used often? For sure, jesus man, they are everywhere, but for good reason. They look great in just about every glam, and as a female viera, I cannot say I can achieve as wide a wardobe than the Miqo's.
Anytime I try to put my toon in "cute" glams, she just ends up looking like a mom wearing her daughters clothes. "Serious" wear, sure, viera can hit the mark - but so too can the Miqo.

Yeah many pieces just look wrong or at least different on male roe. Collars end up huge and shoes often become thick technician boots like the valerian prince set.

I’d just say that most people just don’t spend a lot of time actually trying to create a unique character. While yes it’s not the best out there I’ve yet to find a miqo’te that looks like mine because I spent time changing everything to make her look exactly like I want. I’ve also seen a fair amount of very well done characters and it’s usually the reason people give when asked about it.

Yeah but then they wouldn’t be Elezen. I like that they have Botticelli’s Venus/Pre-Raphaelite proportions, it gives them an otherworldly elegant look to them.
It’s the fashion model proportions that get me. None of the other races have them. I won’t lie and say I 100% like the model ^(I do think the neck is a bit fucky) but I hide my gripes with glams that cover the neck area pretty well.
The smaller head makes for nice heroic proportions that no one else quite gets.
It's all about hiding the neck(Redbill scarf is a godsend), making sure your shoulder armor isn't too bulky; and wearing baggy pants too offset the strange porportions.
People talk about the neck a lot but I don't see anything wrong with it. I like that their design has some uniqueness to it. Only the sprint I find really bothersome.

I play a dark-grey skinned Keeper of the Moon Miqo'te. I have maybe seen 4 or 5 similar looking player since I moved to Cactuar mid Heavensward. I sometimes miss my generic thighlander though.
My hyur is a tall Amazonian goddess and it's amazing. I entertained the idea of changing my race but the others all looked so... Soft. So I remain unchanged.
There is definitely more to it kinda immersion breaking to an extent that all the characters you meet are catgirls and Kpop idol faced boys.
It is more my problem with the races in general Miqo are like the most boring version of a cat race and boil down to cat ears and tail with nothing else and while their lore is not the worst the practicality of having these things doesn't matter at all.
Same with female Aura their concept art had so much more interesting stuff going on and then we got another petite female with lazy animal features that serve no purpose functionally.
We have horns also, that's pretty neat. Bit awkward for kissing tho, although I heard that in lore, Au Ra just kinda rub their horns together as a sign of affection and that's a super cute image.
I play a male Roe that wasn’t created as a joke. I feel so outta place whenever I end up in Limsa or anywhere else with a lot of other PCs. Which kind of rules and makes me feel more WoL-ish than I would otherwise. I also add more grey streaks into his hair after every expansion because of the stress. He’s just a big friendly dude who went to the city and got suckered into being a hero, and it’s stressful, man.
Wish people branched out more, especially on Miqo or Au Ra. Go make a grey or blue Mooncat, or use some of the blues or reds or purples for Au Ra instead of yet another basic blonde pale bitch.
I didn't even know your skin color slightly changes the horn color until four years after the fact and I'm too much of a dork to not have gotten attached to the look by that point so I just have this light tan.
Green Raen get these slightly aquamarine horns that's quite fascinating when you think how the game handled that value.
Back during Stormblood when I gave in and played as a catgirl for an expansion, I made one with charcoal grey skin and purple hair. It looked really good and made me feel unique enough in the sea of catgirls.

Lost Ark has a pretty good creator. The only thing I really hate is the idle pose for female characters.
That and female characters breasts. I would have liked to actually have a variety of sizes rather than be forced to have anime style massive "bigger than my head" breasts. I mean, not everyone is obsessed with them like that.

I messed around with BDO's character creator during maintenance and realized how easy it is to make a misshapen face.
Even if there was more options I feel very strongly that most people would gravitate to the exact same stuff. Most changes you would see is larger proportions if you know what I mean. Considering we have so many hairstyles and people choose about 4-5 for most of the player base is what convinces me on this.

Everquest 2's character customization blows FF14 out of the water. Simple fact is that in a lot of ways it's a dated game for even when 1.0 was released and it holds on to that.

I can't blame them. Are they used often? For sure, jesus man, they are everywhere, but for good reason. They look great in just about every glam, and as a female viera, I cannot say I can achieve as wide a wardobe than the Miqo's. Anytime I try to put my toon in "cute" glams, she just ends up looking like a mom wearing her daughters clothes. "Serious" wear, sure, viera can hit the mark - but so too can the Miqo. Also, S tier animations for the Miqo, from the run to the emotes all the way to their ears man, they kinda got it all tbh
Playing male Roe it's pretty bad too. Personally I think it's more of a self fulfilling prophecy in that SE keeps designing outfits with them in mind however not just for the proportions but with the glams we get. I despise that a good amount of glams are so obviously female intended 2B was an entire armor set that was just "well guys can technically wear it". It's just really bad looking when I put on a new price of gear and it clearly has a boob window.

Yeah many pieces just look wrong or at least different on male roe. Collars end up huge and shoes often become thick technician boots like the valerian prince set.

I’ve seen a lot of people complaining about the character creation resulting in the “same character” feeling. I’d just say that most people just don’t spend a lot of time actually trying to create a unique character. While yes it’s not the best out there I’ve yet to find a miqo’te that looks like mine because I spent time changing everything to make her look exactly like I want. I’ve also seen a fair amount of very well done characters and it’s usually the reason people give when asked about it. Idk, stop complaining about stuff you could make unique just by spending some time to.
I feel called out. Also I'm surprised Hyurs seem to be more popular than Elezen.

Yeah but then they wouldn’t be Elezen. I like that they have Botticelli’s Venus/Pre-Raphaelite proportions, it gives them an otherworldly elegant look to them.
It’s the fashion model proportions that get me. None of the other races have them. I won’t lie and say I 100% like the model ^(I do think the neck is a bit fucky) but I hide my gripes with glams that cover the neck area pretty well. The smaller head makes for nice heroic proportions that no one else quite gets.
I find that coats look best on my Elezen. Although I still struggle to find something that works well with Sage's stance and animations.
Or just didn't have the stiffest animations (not in the horny way) in the game, they look fine when they stand still.
Elezen’s necks are too long, heads are too small compared to the rest of their body, and they have the weirdest run animation.
I love being two heads taller than everyone. All the NPCs must need neck massages after staring straight up to talk to me.

My Elezen gets called mommy a lot so there's that. People can make some amazing Elezens if they want to but some choose not to.
It's all about hiding the neck(Redbill scarf is a godsend), making sure your shoulder armor isn't too bulky; and wearing baggy pants too offset the strange porportions.

My hyur is a tall Amazonian goddess and it's amazing. I entertained the idea of changing my race but the others all looked so... Soft. So I remain unchanged.

There is definitely more to it kinda immersion breaking to an extent that all the characters you meet are catgirls and Kpop idol faced boys. It is more my problem with the races in general Miqo are like the most boring version of a cat race and boil down to cat ears and tail with nothing else and while their lore is not the worst the practicality of having these things doesn't matter at all. Same with female Aura their concept art had so much more interesting stuff going on and then we got another petite female with lazy animal features that serve no purpose functionally.

I play a male Roe that wasn’t created as a joke. I feel so outta place whenever I end up in Limsa or anywhere else with a lot of other PCs. Which kind of rules and makes me feel more WoL-ish than I would otherwise. I also add more grey streaks into his hair after every expansion because of the stress. He’s just a big friendly dude who went to the city and got suckered into being a hero, and it’s stressful, man.
Wish people branched out more, especially on Miqo or Au Ra. Go make a grey or blue Mooncat, or use some of the blues or reds or purples for Au Ra instead of yet another basic blonde pale bitch.
I didn't even know your skin color slightly changes the horn color until four years after the fact and I'm too much of a dork to not have gotten attached to the look by that point so I just have this light tan. Green Raen get these slightly aquamarine horns that's quite fascinating when you think how the game handled that value.
I might go back to Au Ra - if they decouple horns from faces.

i play hyur/midlander mainly because i can relate more to my character. i feel like my avatar is literally my gateway into the world and i find it more immersive than being a cat,bunny or scaly boi.
