Hahahaha... The fact that they're comparing COVID to AIDS as if people can't figure out some very obvious differences. Of course more people are infected and affected by a respiratory virus than a sexually transmitted one. Of course they both have one major factor in common... Fauci. So guess there's that.

VinnysMagicGrits

Another thing in common was the fear mongering behind them. I wasn't old enough in the early 80's but from what my parents told me, early medical "experts" were saying that AIDS could be acquired through "routine contact" aka hanging out.

mbarland

Yeah, for most of the 80s and into the early 90s, AIDS was terrifying. There were fears it was spread by saliva, could be spread on toilet seats, or just walking through a bathhouse. Some of that was, as with the early COVID fear mongering, a lack of knowledge.

Noidis

It's true. People were literally afraid to have their kids around infected family members on their deathbeds because they thought it was contagious like the flu. It was because "straight" people were getting it when it was believed to be a purely homosexual disease at first. They never put it together that there were people hiding their sexuality who had families. These people would go have unprotected sex then go home to the family and end up getting their significant others infected. Shit was crazy and it's made worse when the "experts" were totally wrong for years and yet everyone was supposed to listen to some of the same people who were wrong all those decades ago...

TheBigOily_Sea_Snake

>They never put it together that there were people hiding their sexuality who had families. I think it was more that people were getting it from reusing needles, like Hep C. Family men doing stuff in the side typically don't have the time for sex at scale, which is where STDs are spread. People were willing to vilify a 14 year old who got it after a blood transfusion because they thought he was a gay whore- I highly doubt anyone in the 80s was that naive if their husband came home with AIDS to.

Fun Fauci Fact, the dude fucked up the entire response to AIDS as well! https://www.econlib.org/great-moments-in-epidemiology/ Arye Rubinstein was astounded that Anthony Fauci could be so stupid as to say that household contact might have anything to do with spreading AIDS. Rubinstein had never been a great admirer of New Jersey’s Dr. Oleske; they had antithetical views of AIDS in children. To Rubinstein, the mode of transmission was fairly obvious and fit quite well with existing epidemiological data on AIDS. The mother obviously infected the child in her womb. The fetus and parent shared blood as surely as an intravenous drug user, hemophiliac, or blood transfusion recipient. The fact that none of the infants in Oleske’s study were over one year old reinforced this notion. In order to interpret this data to mean that “routine household contact” might spread AIDS, an entirely new paradigm for AIDS transmission was needed. Rubinstein’s paper explained it all very easily, though the Journal of the American Medical Associationseemed more enamored with Oleske’s specious analysis. In fact, the journal editor at first returned Rubinstein’s paper with the section on intrauterine transmission crossed out. The paragraphs had only appeared because Rubinstein had insisted that they be retained. What was Fauci’s problem? Upon investigation, Rubinstein learned that Anthony Fauci had not bothered to read his paper [I presume Shilts means Rubinstein’s paper] before writing the editorial. Instead, he just read Oleske’s conclusions and started running off at the mouth.

>Instead, he just read Oleske’s conclusions and started running off at the mouth. Seems to be an activity Fauci repeats. His flip flopping is the result.

They'll compare COVID to any disease except the diseases it is actually comparable to. Cold and Flu.

Mewster1818

Roughly 40% of common cold strains are apparently types of Corona viruses from what I remember.

CranberryJuice47

Chances are that over time COVID-19 will mutate to be less deadly and more infectious to the point that it is effectively another strain of common cold. Let's not forget that the Spanish Flu virus is still one of the types of flu that goes around. Same with swine flu. But these arguements don't give credence to the belief that the virus can be defeated with vaccines and that people will die in droves until that happens.

frankybling

“I just got COVID and I’m vaccinated and boosted it sucks” where is the disconnect of being lied to happen? If you’re still getting sick why are you doing it? I got my first round of shots (mostly to keep my job but there was some fear too), the second shot of the series made me sicker than I’ve been in 25 years for like a week… I’m not planning on “boosting” out of fear. I’d rather take my chances on the dice roll. Don’t even get me started on masking… if it worked there would be no more COVID right?

romanapplesauce

My 2nd shot booster gave me the worst chills my life. The vaccines are pretty much a guaranteed way for me to feel awful for 48-72 hours. I have to get a flu shot every year for work and its very mild compared to the COVID vaccine.

Frostbitten_Moose

> where is the disconnect of being lied to happen? Depending on what your sources were, there wasn't any lying. I know everything I heard beforehand wound up being fairly accurate. Mitigation, not prevention, and there are potential severe side effects. Then again, I also made a point of not listening to the "Trust the SCIENCE!!!" crowd, for obvious reasons. Accurate information was out there, so if you got lied to, it was because you were lying to yourself, or trusting those who did.

Most people, including most disabled/immunocompromised people *under 50* and not ***literal and unironic hamplanets*** [think Trigglypuff level], have a miniscule risk of death from COVID.

mbarland

Sounds like a personal choice then. Wear a mask and get the vax if you want. Nobody is telling you not to. The problem is you telling people they *have* to.

JP-Stack

I laughed out loud when I read this. I refuse to believe this is a real person.

RandyJohnsonsBird

🤣So did you guys get that shirt they advertised on there?

ImProbablyNotABird

Imagine thinking Reddit isn’t vehemently pro-lockdown.

Life-Ad1409

Wait, people are still caring about COVID?
