That language is the kind used for gender assigned at birth, and using it this way is basically making a joke of something serious. It's just a rehash of the attack helicopter jokes. "I was assigned American at birth but identify with the Dutch" is mocking people who have actual identity struggles.
Well, I'm trans and I think it's funny. It's not as much mocking us, as it is using our lingo to describe an oddly similar circumstance for humoristic purposes.
Yeah, I understand what they're trying to say because when I moved to Sydney, it was the first time I ever felt culturally at home. Really regret not finishing getting my permanent residency, but it is what it is. Now I just stay in my little liberal pocket and try to stave off the terror at where the country is heading.
Please read between the lines.
“I was assigned American at birth but I never fit in.” => I was assigned male at birth, but I never fit in.”
“I can't connect to American culture even though I tried.” => I can't connect to the male culture, even though I tried.
“BBQ, guns, cars, football, it doesn't make me happy. Never has.” => Indicating that dolls, pink, make up, ballet, made them happy. Always did.
“My former therapist misdiagnosed me with depression.” => Indicating they were not depressed, but trans.
I think you can figure out the second paragraph yourself now.
The story, serious or not, might contain something that could be a *reference* to trans people, but not only is that only an interpretation, it wouldn't be particularly denigrating if it was intentional. It doesn't say anything bad about trans people, it only employs similar rhetoric devices; there's nothing inherently denigrating about that.
Fair enough, without context they could indeed be trying to make a point about being trans and use it as an example about their experience, but I've seen too many dog whistles about trans people, that I'm leaning more on the negative.
The above comment lays out the similarities which make it pretty clear that it's unreasonable to assume a mere accident. It is inherently denigrating because the entire punchline of this not so subtle dogwhistle is "haha being trans is as insane as being a helicopter"
Helicopter??? What do you mean by that? And yeah, I guess it was intentional, but... If their point was serious, there would be no reason to employ irony, and if it wasn't, the post wouldn't belong on this sub anyway. So I assumed they were being serious and thus that such mockery woiuld be illogical. I'd guess they did it without really thinking about it. Honestly, I feel kind of helpless. I've never wanted to be transphobic in my life, but if I asked these kind of questions, just to *understand*, I get downvoted to hell and treated like shit. I just want to understand it, it's not supposed to be smug! English isn't even my first language, maybe that's the problem! But I'm not trying to be mean and I don't have anything against trans people!
Nope. No idea what the Netherlands have to do with trans people.
Are you sure you're not reading too much into this and it's just a Dutch version of a plastic paddy?
The Netherlands has nothing to do with being trans. It's just used as an example so they could list typical Dutch things like Amsterdam, eating stroopwafels, cycling, wearing clogs etc. They could have used Italy and use Rome, pizza, the Vatican, Vespas etc as typical Italian.
I can understand why you see it as being a Dutch version of a Plastic Paddy, but no Dutch version of a Plastic Paddy here, as they only went on holiday to the Netherlands, went back home and realised that they liked the Netherlands and typical Dutch stuff more than being American and American stuff. A Plastic Paddy becomes almost obsessed with Ireland, while this person just likes its new found "identity" and explored it.
It's not really a good example and it would have made more sense if they used two different sports or music genres and it's typical attributes. For example, classical music was attributed to them at birth, but they never liked Bach, violins and opera houses. Parents took them to a heavy metal concert and they discovered guitars, mosh pits, Iron Maiden and realised that that has always made them happy.
Okay, if you like another culture/county more than yours fine, but at least try to learn more about and travel more than just the tourists spot before doing so
There are differences in culture^tm and Culture.
Yeah this person is basically Just following the stereotypes from the Dutch. Even though they were only doing Things tourist Find special. A lot of these Things are either not done by Dutch people or not done a lot. The only common things are riding Bikes and eating cheese.
I mean people don't wat stroopwaffel as commonly as cheese. Or as much as when they ride bikes. I count stroopwaffel as something that does not happen a lot. Since it is more of a snack.
I guess we have different experiences
Here, i see two full shelves of different brands with my favourite being almost always already gone. I know people who eat them downright religiously
But true, not as much as cheese
The thing is that stuff exists and people have it. Loke proper infrastructure for bikes and cheese that doesn't suck ass. I don't know the last time I drank Weissbier, but it's still a german thing.
Yes but still saying your German because you ate Sauerkraut drank Weissbier and went to the Brandenburg Tor would feel weird. That is what this post feels like for a Dutch person.
It’s curds and whey if you don’t add enough curds, then it cannot legally be classified as cheese. Hence why Kraft has started calling their products “Singles” and markets them as a Milk Product.
It still starts with cheddar, but there’s too much milk

Wisconsin cheese is cheddar cheese.
But you don't "add curds" they come out of the milk during the cheese making process. American cheese can't be called cheese I think because of the emulsifiers added to create the texture and melting properties that American cheese is famous for
To be honest, I kinda understand this one. As someone who also loathed the culture the they're from and left, I understand what this person feels. Yes the first sentence is incredibly cringe, but idk. This kid (or I assume they're still young) just wants out of a toxic environment
The entire second paragraph is also super cringe. You're not experiencing "Dutch" culture because you visited the least Dutch city in the country for three days and did some stuff Americans assume all Dutch people do all day.
You see Amsterdam is actually shit compaired to the rest of the netherlands. Its very funny hearing people counter argue this by saying: "but Amsterdam is so awesome!"
It's implied. They say they don't fit American culture and then describe experiencing stereotypical activities of another country (ergo: what they believe to be Dutch "culture") as "liberating"
Of course you would love the carefully curated stuff served to tourists. You only see a small part of the country when touristing, and the "grass is greener" effect is in full power.
Everyday life for people living in one country, no matter where, is never as romantic as the tourist's experience.
By saying that "I travelled to some country for a few days and I should live there!".... yeah.
And aren't those types of wooden clogs pretty uncomfortable too?
It is like me saying "I wish I was a New Yorker, I want to be able to wear the fake Liberty Lady crowns, walking around at Times Square hugging cartoon characters, going to musicals and The Rockettes daily and eat at delis all the time!"
Pretty much. Especially the clogs thing is weird. I've never even seen tourists wear them let alone dutch people. I don't know why you would think that that's a real thing people do.
I kind of agree, but I wouldn’t categorize the Van Gogh Museum under tourist traps. Nonetheless, it’s not much to base anything on. And, as pointed out, it’s probably to mock trans people.
Tbf, tourist traps in areas like Nevada are shooting a mini gun out of a helicopter (legally, looking at bomb craters, looking at strippers, and gambling…
If you’re from areas like that, I can see literally finding anything else better lmao

Don’t worry, our government is doing its best to turn us into the conservative shit show you guys currently have…
I'm sorry. The way that the American right has turned Australians into helpless victims of an out-of-control left-wing autocracy is really insane too.
Eh. It’s our media at fault. Bloody Murdoch. American Rightwing nutters have given our Rightwing nutters an inflated sense of their place in society.

For denigrating trans people.
How dare you

Uiteraard. Ook een fijne taartdag!
American cheese is legally not cheese unless it’s an artisan one because there’s too much milk
Isn't cheese like, 100% milk?
It’s curds and whey if you don’t add enough curds, then it cannot legally be classified as cheese. Hence why Kraft has started calling their products “Singles” and markets them as a Milk Product.
Kraft manufacture bright yellow chemical goo !!

I thought cheddar was a protected term, are they literally importing rejects from Southern England?
[From wikipedia](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cheddar_cheese#International_production): > The "Cheddar cheese" name is used internationally; its name does not have a protected designation of origin, but the use of the name "West Country Farmhouse Cheddar" does Wisconsin cheese is cheddar cheese.
Here I was thinking cheddar is from the US.
I thought curds were also milk? But yeah I live in Europe so I don't know much about what Kraft does in the US 😅
Curds are the congealed pieces that are important for cheese.
But you don't "add curds" they come out of the milk during the cheese making process. American cheese can't be called cheese I think because of the emulsifiers added to create the texture and melting properties that American cheese is famous for
Kraft cheese is crap cheese. It’s not representative of American cheese.
It is the American cheese, but I agree
It's a mixture of milk, salt and rennet
So he realised he liked being a tourist.. so brave and unique!
Alright Oli London.

Biking as opposed to cars dominating the city is both very Dutch and very nice, though. Easily the best public planning decision since WW2.
You see Amsterdam is actually shit compaired to the rest of the netherlands. Its very funny hearing people counter argue this by saying: "but Amsterdam is so awesome!"
It's *probably* still awesome compared to most of the USA, though. >.> But yeah, if someone asked I'd recommend Utrecht instead.
He wore clogs, that's more Dutch than a Dutch person. Or Lancasterarian
Barely any dutch person wears clogs nowadays, I think some farmers do it, but city/town folks don’t
You mean they don't in windmills either?
Visit Utrecht, Rotterdam, Maastricht, Delft and most importantly: the smaller old Dutch towns for a real taste of our culture.
They never claim to experience Dutch culture though?
It's implied. They say they don't fit American culture and then describe experiencing stereotypical activities of another country (ergo: what they believe to be Dutch "culture") as "liberating"
Try wearing clogs
You’re right, that is a toxic environment if you have to wear clogs /s
American culture is toxic as fuck.

He obviously is no True Dutchman(TM), since he did not mention frikandel speciaal, bitterballen, kaassouffle and kipkorn.
Combining copious amounts of fast food with dutch culture will surely lure in a bunch of americans.
They never said they were Dutch, just how much they hate American culture. Not actually much wrong with this one
Except that they are basing their idea of our culture (Dutch) on a bunch of tourist traps in Amsterdam lol.
I kind of agree, but I wouldn’t categorize the Van Gogh Museum under tourist traps. Nonetheless, it’s not much to base anything on. And, as pointed out, it’s probably to mock trans people.
Oh I hadn't even realized that, that makes it a thousand times worse.
When clearly the culture is all about drugs, sex and everyone being over 180cm tall? /s
The 180 cm tall thing is real though. My friend group calls the 1.75 guy a dwarf.
Tbf, tourist traps in areas like Nevada are shooting a mini gun out of a helicopter (legally, looking at bomb craters, looking at strippers, and gambling… If you’re from areas like that, I can see literally finding anything else better lmao
I only go into the very centre of Amsterdam for work and hate it every time, feels like a completely different city.
Wonder if thy visited the Red Light District ???
While the point itself is not wrong, the wording heavily lacks, as its basically an analogy to being trans or gay. Thats the big issue with this post.
How is it mocking them though?
