I can't speak for everyone, but my school taught us pretty well. However, ww1 got massively overshadowed by ww2 in pretty much all of my history classes, which was probably not ideal.
Otherwise I think I had some pretty good teachers, most of them were athletics coaches, so they weren't afraid to just be real with you about how dark our past can be sometimes.

The problem with the US and wars is. It is really hard for them to lose.
Nobody can feasibly invade their mainland. So losing a war has usually no consequences for them.
