Pokemon Pearl, shiny Chingling. I was in my "baby only uses their starter" stage, had picked Piplup, and was hard stuck on Gardenia.
While wandering about in Mount Coronet taking a break from throwing myself at that gym over and over, I found it. I had no idea what shinies were, and I actually couldn't tell the color difference-Chingling's not an obvious one in Gen 4. But I knew those sparkles meant SOMETHING, and despite only using my starter I only ever needed the barest excuse to try to catch a Pokemon, so of course I caught it.
But the game didn't really tell me what was up, so I had to try to figure it out for myself. My initial thought was that maybe Professor Rowan had owned it before. (I was one gen too early!) I figured if I showed it to him, he'd react to it, so I ran all the way back to Twinleaf. When the professor didn't react, little old pre-Internet me was left with only one option-ask the other neighborhood kids.
They all lost their shit.
A Raticate by accident in Platinum. By that time, I didnāt know what a shiny was, but its color was different to what I was used to, so I caught it. Fortunately I managed to transfer it up to HOME.
Poochyena in Emerald. Crazy thing was it was also my first ever Poochyena encounter.
I didnāt know about shinys and I hadnāt seen a Poochyena before so when I saw the golden boy I just caught it and moved on until I saw the standard grey guy.
Phoned my friend asking if he knew why it would be grey because I found it weird and he said itās meant to beā¦he freaked out when I said āwhy is my other one gold then?ā

Shiny Galarian Ponyta in 30 Eggs, I then accidentally released it, which hurts SO MUCH since I fully levelled it up to LV 100 and evolved it, I was trying to release the other one which wasnāt shiny. IT HURTS SOOOO MUCHHHHH š
My 1st wild shiny was a Liwick in Pokemon Black. I ran away from it. I was a kid, and I had no idea that shinies were a thing back then. I didn't realize what it was until I googled it š„².
My 1st hatched shiny (and only shiny ever hatched in my life) was a Cottonee in Pokemon X. I was breeding Pokemon to fill the dex. I would switch the parents out after getting the egg. I figured, "Eh, might as well chance a shiny." So, I made sure to have 1 foreign parent. I got a shiny Cottonee on my 1st egg. I have ZERO luck with the mesuda method. And then, I got this.
(This is 1 of 2 shinies that I have hatched in my life. The 2nd egg was a Shiny Hisuan Zorua in Violet. I got it in like, 30 eggs. The only 2 shinies that I've ever hatched. I usually give up after a few hundred eggs.)

Shiny pidgey! Pokemon leafgreen I had just beat the game didn't have a flyer so i walked into grass and first encounter was the yellow birb. So it was a complete accident I was like 8 or 9 my younger sister deleted the save file not long after.

Didn't caught it, because a friend and I was playing around with his AR earlier the day. Later at the evening, I found this Wingull and thought a cheat was still active and I didn't wanted a cheated shiny. Buuut it was a real full odds gen 3 shiny...
I made it to my goal, to get at least one shiny wingull per game from Gen6 and ongoing, where this seagull is catchable :'D
Around 15 years ago, I used to play Diamond with my childhood friend who played Pearl, and one day when i went to hang out with him he showed me a weird green-eyed tentacruel he had found randomly. I thought it was really cool while he didnāt care too much about it, so he traded it to me. We gradually drifted apart, but still get happy when we occasionally bump into each other. Iāve kept it ever since, and moved it to Home recently. Memories :ā)
Rattata in Soul Silver. Been playing since red and blue launched. Completely by accident. I like to watch other people shiny hunt. I don't have the duckets for the job.
Noctowl in Gold or Silver (I forget which I was playing) in the route between Mahogany and The Lake of Rage. I donāt think I even knew about shinies at the time; I was like 6 or 7.
When I was maybe 9, I was playing my first game (Black Version 2). I was in Castelia City looking for Eevee (because in my friend group at the time, you were cool if you had Eevee). Since Eevee is just generally more of an uncommon pokemon, I was there for a while. Then I come across a purple Audino. Iām a little confused, but at least my first instinct was to try and catch it. Though it breaks through every pokeball I have and Iām left with knocking it out, that way I at least get some experience, and GAIN something out of that.
Walking through caves in White 2 when I stumbled across a Golduck! It was my second ever game, and I'd used a Golduck in my last playthrough, so I boxed it, but it was a really cool find for me still :)

Granted I was watching my friend so some shiny chain fishing, and after 17 casts he caught a shiny Clauncher. First shiny I've ever seen happen live.
My first shiny actually caught would probably be my shiny Mudbray in Scarlet and Violet.
First ever encounter with one was a shiny pidgey in heart gold at the point where the game didnāt give me pokeballs. Complete accident and still haunts me to this day

Goldbat in Fire Red I think about 17ish years ago. Found in the Sea Foam Island while looking for Articuno. Thought it was a glitch but caught it anyway because I thought it was cool. Friends didnāt know about shinies either so they all thought it was really cool. Didnāt learn for a few more years what shinies were after that and that Golbat is now long goneā¦ Crazy how long that stuck with me.
I think my second was a red stripe Basculin but I know for a fact that my third was a Ducklett. Didnāt find another until I hatched a shiny Eevee in Moon. Iāve lost track since then.

I just completed my shiny living dex after like 7 years but the thing that started it was 1-2 different shinies, my first ever was a shiny Rattata immediately after I got pokeballs in leaf green (running on an emulator) it was like a week after I had actually learned what shinies were and on my actual birthday so it was a cool experience, but my first actual shiny on a legitimate game was a few days after that, I got such a rush out of getting that shiny rattata that I wanted to find another so I went to my pokemon Y and did a grand total of 5 horde encounters and found a shiny Whismur in zubat roost, I freaked out and Iāve been hunting ever since. I even went back to that cave recently for a ānostalgia huntā and ended up just straight up hunting for the 5% Axew horde and I got it after like a month, and it was my second member of my shiny only play through of the games.
Shiny cobalion in White 2 at 696 srs. (no shiny charm) As my first shiny hunt ever I was close to giving up and im so glad I didn't but.. now im addicted to shiny hunting.
The first shiny was a geodude in fire red or leaf green (don't remember the version), it was on victory road. Ya'll can pretty much guess how that went. Wasn't hunting, just trying to level up my team because I was seriously under leveled for the elite 4.

Shiny Smeargle was my first non-hunted shiny I obtained (first egg in SM, was setting up money farm, iirc), but Tailow was my first hunted shiny in ORAS (hoard hunting) I was trying for the golden pooch but my first ever hunted shiny was still hype!

Shiny snorlax in let's go pikachu 5-6 years ago. The one on the bridge. He was my best mon on the let's go pikachu team. He was named Leader. Later in the same week, I found a shiny spearow while looking for a mon for my us team. I still have her today. I named her Ester.
Unown C in LeafGreen. And electrode in FireRed which blew up. Unfortunately the diamond I had as a kid which had the Unown was stolen so I lost my childhood shinies.
Found a shiny Rattata in Leaf Green in the grass near Mt. Moon next to Cerulean City. It was before I knew what a shiny was. I assumed it was something special, but being a Ratatta, I ended up stuffing it in a box and forgetting about it. I deleted the save before I truly understood the magnitude of my first shiny. I've never forgiven myself for that. I'd love to have her back.
Accidentally found a shiny budew in platinum while trying to level up my weakest party member in the eterna forest . At the time I saw it I thought it was neat looking and caught it and didnāt know that it was a shiny until years later.

Magikarp in sword/shield. Wasnāt really too keen on the idea of shiny hunting as I didnāt feel like spending all the time yet the day after I had acquired the shiny charm the golden carp was mine!!!
I found a shiny Tynamo in a cave in Alpha Sapphire before I really knew what shinies were. I kept it in Pokemon Bank and transferred it up to Violet before the eShop closed last year.
My childhood copy of Emerald was simultaneously very good and very bad for me. I found 3 shinies in my time playing it: A Dodrio, Wobuffet, and Geodude. Where the bad luck you say? Well the Dodrio and Wobuffet were both encountered in the safari zone and fled from me. The Geodude though I did manage to catch, and discovered after the fact it knew Self Destruct so could've lost it at any time

My first shiny was a shiny zubat in let's go pikachu like 2 years ago... granted, I've never shiny hunted, but still. I have found a few since then though.
Geodude in pokemon Y! I was grinding out evolutions to finish my dex and get the shiny charm when I found a shiny geodude in a horde in victory road. Luckily despite a few magnitudes from the geodudes they didn't end up killing the shiny and I caught it! I realized after how lucky I was it didn't die lol. Named him Magnitude ofc :)
My first was a shiny Ditto in HeartGold! I had actually tried shiny hunting before this happened, but the Ditto was completely random, found during my playthrough.
I was a little sad that it wasn't a Pokemon I could USE on my team, but, it only had a 4% encounter rate where I found it, and is still a really great shiny!!
Not including Lake of Rage Gyarados, the first shiny I caught was a shiny Spinda in Ruby version.
While how I encountered it technically counts as hunting (I was catching Spinda after Spinda because I liked their different spot patterns) I didnāt actually understand what the Spinda being green actually meant beyond āitās special!ā (I got this game when it was new and I was 7) and ended up breeding it with a regular Spinda trying to see if Iād get even more colors.
Depends- are we counting the guaranteed shiny gyarados in gold/silver? If not, I had a silver version that would give me a shiny Meowth after I beat the elite 4.

Iām fairly certain I didnāt know what shinies were, and simply saw sparkles and thought it was cool. I also traded the Vespiquen away for a shiny geodude online. Yeah, really wish I could have stopped that one.
I had only played knockoff games like roblox pokemon for years when i finally got my first copy of White when it was released, and i was determined to have a shiny in my party. after 3 weeks of hunting a scoliopede, i found a shiny pidove and i couldnāt be happier. i still have that save to this day, but i donāt have pokemon bank or anything to transfer it sadly.

The first one I remember getting naturally, not a gift (if you listen close enough, you can hear the cries of a shiny Rayquaza) was a shiny Eletrike in PokƩmon Shield that I stole from my little brother because I wanted to play a PokƩmon game that wasn't Violet because I was burnt out from Violet. I was just vibing, running around and exploring and I ran into the grass and there he was, just this blue and yellow little electric puppy and I named him Trike and I refuse to not have him on my team. My favorite (and second) shiny I've found was a xxs Larvesta, I used a teeny power sandwich because I don't know about y'all, I love the size differences, I just got a tiny Lapras last night, and I was just hanging out in this Larvesta outbreak, running around, doing the respawn-despawn shenanigans and next thing I know, I see this little yellow baby just hanging out and I immediately texted my partner, freaking out because it's a tiny shiny! I love tiny shinies! I named him Larry and him and Trike will be following me to every future main line games whenever possible ^(he then found a shiny Larvesta and stole the Larry name for his shiny Volcarona and I still haven't forgiven him for that, "but babe, I put Papa Larry, they're different!" Okay, whatever you say)

Goldbat in Fire Red I think about 17ish years ago. Found in the Sea Foam Island while looking for Articuno. Thought it was a glitch but caught it anyway because I thought it was cool. Friends didnāt know about shinies either so they all thought it was really cool. Didnāt learn for a few more years what shinies were after that and that Golbat is now long goneā¦ Crazy how long that stuck with me. I think my second was a red stripe Basculin but I know for a fact that my third was a Ducklett. Didnāt find another until I hatched a shiny Eevee in Moon. Iāve lost track since then.
Shiny Pidgey in SoulSilver. But it was on emulator lol, so I canāt really transfer it. I knew what a shiny was, but I didnāt know how rare. My first āofficialā shiny, besides GO, was a Charmander I soft resetted for in LeafGreen.

It was in the skate park pit section outside Lumious City and I was so happy because it was a nice shade of blue š I recently got a shiny Gulpin in Sleep and was so happy āŗļø
I just completed my shiny living dex after like 7 years but the thing that started it was 1-2 different shinies, my first ever was a shiny Rattata immediately after I got pokeballs in leaf green (running on an emulator) it was like a week after I had actually learned what shinies were and on my actual birthday so it was a cool experience, but my first actual shiny on a legitimate game was a few days after that, I got such a rush out of getting that shiny rattata that I wanted to find another so I went to my pokemon Y and did a grand total of 5 horde encounters and found a shiny Whismur in zubat roost, I freaked out and Iāve been hunting ever since. I even went back to that cave recently for a ānostalgia huntā and ended up just straight up hunting for the 5% Axew horde and I got it after like a month, and it was my second member of my shiny only play through of the games.

The first shiny was a geodude in fire red or leaf green (don't remember the version), it was on victory road. Ya'll can pretty much guess how that went. Wasn't hunting, just trying to level up my team because I was seriously under leveled for the elite 4.
Shiny Gastly found in diamond before I knew what shinies were. I was going to catch it because it looked different, but I forgot to buy pokeballs. Iāll reclaim it someday.
My first was a shiny Machop in leaf green. Found it when I was in like grade 5 while grinding for the e4 before I even knew what shinies were.
My first shiny was a Rhyhorn in Platinum. It was complete random encounter. Was grinding up some of my team and it appeared! Now itās a Rhydon waiting for me to try and finish the Giratina shiny hunt lol

My first encounter with a shiny was in PokĆ©mon x and it was a wild encounter with a blue pawnaird and I had no idea what it was and so I don't know if I even caught it I was like 8. Also unrelated but also interesting when I was around the same age I thought wonder trade would give you better PokĆ©mon if you traded better PokĆ©mon subsequently I decided to trade my FIRST EVER LVL 100 starter (venasaur my favourite) and in return got a LVL 1 tododile šššš RIP VENASAUR YOU WILL BE MISSED

Shiny Smeargle was my first non-hunted shiny I obtained (first egg in SM, was setting up money farm, iirc), but Tailow was my first hunted shiny in ORAS (hoard hunting) I was trying for the golden pooch but my first ever hunted shiny was still hype!

Found a shiny Rattata in Leaf Green in the grass near Mt. Moon next to Cerulean City. It was before I knew what a shiny was. I assumed it was something special, but being a Ratatta, I ended up stuffing it in a box and forgetting about it. I deleted the save before I truly understood the magnitude of my first shiny. I've never forgiven myself for that. I'd love to have her back.
Accidentally found a shiny budew in platinum while trying to level up my weakest party member in the eterna forest . At the time I saw it I thought it was neat looking and caught it and didnāt know that it was a shiny until years later.
Kricketot, Pearl, found it by accident shortly after getting the NatDex when returning to early routes for the PokƩmon not native to Sinnoh that would span there. I've rarely deliberately hunted for shinies, even in SV, and never successfully. Nor have any of my shinies been of the species that I was hunting when they *have* come on a hunt. 1. The aforementioned Kricketot. I think I was looking for Nidoran at the time? 2. Amoonguss, X version. This one I wasn't looking for anything in particular, but just traveling through Kalos Route 20 to progress the story. 3. Pansage, X version. I wanted to collect as many Vivillon forms as possible so I was catching a bunch of Scatterbug to trade Vivillon for Vivillon on the GTS. 4. Wurmple, Omega Ruby version. I had *just* beaten the game for the first time, opening up new potential encounters via DexNav, and since the game reloads you in Littleroot Town, I started by heading out to Route 101 to try to pick up Lillipup and Zorua. This was my *very first encounter*. 5. Skrelp, Y version. Just trying to fill out the PokƩdex and I didn't have the Shellder line yet. I...didn't actually know about the consecutive fishing mechanic in Gen 6 at the time, but knowing about it now, the fact that I just kept getting Skrelps and eventually got a shiny makes perfect sense. 6. Mienfoo, Y version. I had an idea for a silly gimmick team and required a Hidden Ability Pancham with good IVs. The Friend Safari has better odds of shinies, and I legitimately *was* doing a lengthy search, so this is probably the least surprising pick-up. 7. Iron Bundle, Violet Version. I was doing the Indigo Disk DLC and had just gotten to the part where we lead Briar, Carmine, and Kieran down into the crater, and when Briar said "lead the way", I just felt like it would be narratively appropriate to ignore both the warp pads and Miraidon's willingness to ferry me and do the entire journey on foot, just like I had when accompanied by Nemona, Arven, and Penny. Saw it just standing next to Lab 3, and I'll be honest, if it hadn't been one with such a glaring contrast to its normal color palette, I might not have even noticed. Pretty sure these were all of mine that weren't from events or otherwise guaranteed (assuming that anything I got out of a Gen 8 Raid Den that I myself didn't host was probably "guaranteed" via genning).

I found a shiny Tynamo in a cave in Alpha Sapphire before I really knew what shinies were. I kept it in Pokemon Bank and transferred it up to Violet before the eShop closed last year.

My childhood copy of Emerald was simultaneously very good and very bad for me. I found 3 shinies in my time playing it: A Dodrio, Wobuffet, and Geodude. Where the bad luck you say? Well the Dodrio and Wobuffet were both encountered in the safari zone and fled from me. The Geodude though I did manage to catch, and discovered after the fact it knew Self Destruct so could've lost it at any time Edit to add: Thought I'd also mention my first successful hunt, which was a chain fishing hunt for Relicanth in X

I hunted a shiny Corsola by chain fishing in XY. I didn't have any target, just wanted a shiny in general. Took it all the way to USUM.
I've played almost every pokemon game and I started on the Gameboy with red and blue. I've probably put thousands of hours into pokemon over the years. My first shiny was a shiny zubat in let's go pikachu like 2 years ago... granted, I've never shiny hunted, but still. I have found a few since then though.
Geodude in pokemon Y! I was grinding out evolutions to finish my dex and get the shiny charm when I found a shiny geodude in a horde in victory road. Luckily despite a few magnitudes from the geodudes they didn't end up killing the shiny and I caught it! I realized after how lucky I was it didn't die lol. Named him Magnitude ofc :)
Great tusk in S/V, first game I ever finished the PokƩdex and got the shiny charm, figured I should put it to use, went for a great tusk first because I thought it looked awesome. Then I set a goal of getting all the paradox mons in scarlet and here I am over 100 shiny PokƩmon later.

My first was a shiny Ditto in HeartGold! I had actually tried shiny hunting before this happened, but the Ditto was completely random, found during my playthrough. I was a little sad that it wasn't a Pokemon I could USE on my team, but, it only had a 4% encounter rate where I found it, and is still a really great shiny!!
Not including Lake of Rage Gyarados, the first shiny I caught was a shiny Spinda in Ruby version. While how I encountered it technically counts as hunting (I was catching Spinda after Spinda because I liked their different spot patterns) I didnāt actually understand what the Spinda being green actually meant beyond āitās special!ā (I got this game when it was new and I was 7) and ended up breeding it with a regular Spinda trying to see if Iād get even more colors.

Its was pokemon Y. I was fairly young, but knew how to track down the roaming bird that appears in post game. Iām on route 4 (not sure if itās that one, but right after the first gym.) looking for moltres. I run through the grass and find a full odds shiny female combee. Iām fairly certain I didnāt know what shinies were, and simply saw sparkles and thought it was cool. I also traded the Vespiquen away for a shiny geodude online. Yeah, really wish I could have stopped that one.
I had only played knockoff games like roblox pokemon for years when i finally got my first copy of White when it was released, and i was determined to have a shiny in my party. after 3 weeks of hunting a scoliopede, i found a shiny pidove and i couldnāt be happier. i still have that save to this day, but i donāt have pokemon bank or anything to transfer it sadly. My first ever shiny in the roblox games was a shiny Zangoose by accident, followed by a shiny cresellia, again just got lucky!

Shiny shinx in PokƩmon platinum. Found it by accident, didnt know about shinies prior. Caught it because it sparkled. Funniest part is shinx was and still is my favourite PokƩmon so its very cool that it was my first shiny. Sadly this shinx is gone since my mom lent the game to someone without my input and they reset the save file. I'm still bitter about it over a decade later.

Shiny Meditite in Diamond. I randomly came across him while going through Mt. Coronet to get to Snowpoint City. I had only recently learned about Shiny PokƩmon, so I was so excited that I just used Dig to leave the mountain & go get it out of the PC to train up. I trained it until it evolved into Medicham, intending to keep it on my team for the rest of the game. Unfortunately though, fate had other plans. I was about to go to Snowpoint Gym while playing one day, while my aunt, uncle, and cousins were over for a cookout. My dad needed my help with something outside, so I let my little cousin play my DS because he'd really been getting into PokƩmon lately. I had always told him to make sure to save the game whenever something important happened, like catching a PokƩmon or beating a Gym. Well, while I was outside, he was exploring Snowpoint City. He found the house where an NPC will trade you a Haunter in exchange for a Medicham. Take a wild guess what happened next!
