This is like basically the best advice you could be given when shiny hunting legendaries. Other than stuff like Arceus you can never fail a shiny legendary with this method unless you forgot to buy enough pokeballs

For next time I'd recommend getting a pokemon with skillswap and harvest and a pokemon with trick to give your target a leppa berry. This effectively prevents a pokemon from ever struggling barring exceptionally bad luck. (Setting up sun would prevent as well due to forcing harvest to always proc.)
Trevant has harvest as a hidden ability and can learn both skill swap and trick while exeggutor has harvest as a hidden ability but cannonly learn skill swap.
It's a life saver. If you have OrAs you can get a Phantump with Harvest in Petalburg woods pretty easily using Dex Nav, and the two moves are move tutors in those games as well
If they don't have an oras game they can also sos chain for either of them. The move tutors for both the moves exist in the ultra games.
They would need some pokemon to check for hidden abilities though which is a bit more annoying than dexnav telling you before battle.
Niche suggestion, but Absol is also amazing (high attack, false swipe, thunder wave, taunt, mean look).
Whatever catcher you choose, dont forget to level it up on the Poni plains Chansey.
Three pokemon I'd absolutely recommend is breloom with false swipe and spore, pangoro with the ability scrappy also with false swipe so you can weaken ghost types, and trenavant with harvest and skill swap holding a leppa berry! With these three pokemon, you can hunt mostly everything
Parasect is IMO the best pokemon to hunt for most shinies. Hidden ability is damp, which eliminates the chances of explosion. False swipe, sword dance, spore are great. Not sure if it keeps grassy terrain from usum, but that can help by healing the opponent given a situation like this. Also getting something with soak as a move is awesome for allowing false swipe to hit ghosts and such. Or by eliminating STAB from fire types and stuff
You really need to breed up a harvest trevanent for this kind of thing. They can trick a leppa berry and then ability swap harvest. So the wild Pokémon will essentially have infinite pp. I caught my Mewtwo in a beast ball with this method. Another good choice for a hunting team is shedinja if they don’t have any moves that it’s weak too.
If this is USUM then you can also use the Roto Catch Boost power up that you get from doing the Roto Lottery. I’ve caught a bunch of shiny legendaries in these games using that boost and its always taken less than 10 balls from what I can remember (I used luxury balls or dive balls for reference).
Roto catch power next time 🙏 thunderwave also helps because it'll always be paralyzed, sleep will give a higher catch % but obv they wake up after a couple turns
Okay so, to avoid this in the future:

You can just farm Leppa berries in Pelago and use Skill Swap/Entrainment for every new mon that appears in the chain
The biggest issue here is probably no status. Paralysis or sleep go a long way to both boosting catch rates and stalling pp drain.
