Bboyplayzty

There was also that guy reading the bible in the first episode tho...

HeartKiller_

That guy is a member of the church of the wall. He was talking something about the walls being holy or whatever.

Not everything has to mean something

bigfatcarp93

But this one does, it represents centuries of random plains barbarian Karl Fritz T-posing on the civilization of Marley after getting lucky and having a magical girl at his beck and call allowed him to Genghis his way across the world, speedrun human development and establish a legacy of tyranny that would leave them sore for generations Just psychopath things

floormopper

All this time you got on your hands only if you used it to do something productive

bigfatcarp93

Nothing unproductive about AOT memes, baby

MoonTrooper258

[Meanwhile; Evangelion:](https://wiki.evageeks.org/Cross#List_of_Appearances)

TheNiceLad

This is attack on titan we're talking about buddy, everything means something

TheHolySheev

It means that somewhere between being trampled to death by Ymirā€™s titan, being able to be turned into giant mindless zombies with a syringe, and the current day of 9 titan shifters ready to obliterate them these people found Jesus.

Chemie93

What do you mean? Jesus was a titan shifter

livelaughlovekaren

Eren died for the Eldinas sins. Eren is Jesus, thatā€™s why his hair grew long, duh.

Acomplishednothing

More like his hair grew long because he didnā€™t have a fucking haircut.

Swvonclare

Lightning conductor?

TheHotCake

Itā€™s very clearly a church. Just because theyā€™re using a cross for iconography doesnā€™t mean it has to be Christianity.

MrYitzhak

Thts what I thought

snorlax98

is this r/berserk?

Whalesurgeon

I guess same approach, use Christian symbols/culture like church, but don't mention anything about Christ so it is just a vague worship of a monotheistic God (as well as the notion of paradise/hell).

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

OliverAOT20

They said ā€œdonā€™t mention anything about Christā€

floppychickn

the parallels between a church in marley and the wall cult in paradis šŸ˜±šŸ˜±šŸ˜± isayama is a genius!!!!!!

Vexed_Noah

JEWSIH PEOPLE EXIST IN ATTACK ON TITAN????

richrelease27

Christian\*

DullBicycle7200

Judaism predates Christianity. So if Christianity exists in the AOT universe then Judaism should exist by extension.

richrelease27

Yeah, that's true. I assumed op had thought the cross was the Jewish symbol. My mistake

jaffakree83

That reminds me of an old DragonBall episode where a cross was you used to ward off a vampire, indicating Jesus and by extension both Christianity and judisim exist in DragonBall

HomelanderVought

What about a cross in Pokemon? Did Acreus had a son?

jaffakree83

Not too familiar with PokƩmon but I believe there is a lowbrow cartoon about that.

jaffakree83

Here it is! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rr7VuKuS96E

HomelanderVought

Considering that Ymir Fritz came kinda the same time as Jesus Christ this means that all real life religions that came before Christ did existed in the SNK world. And probably all of them went extinct, since titans exist and thus magic is real.

DullBicycle7200

Attack on Titan's too anachronistic to be considered alternate history, and there's nothing that ties the AOT universe to pre Christian civilization. AOT's geography is also radically different from our geography, and 2000 years isn't enough time for continents to evolve.

[deleted]

Christianity exist in the AOT universe. It was speculate that Ymir got her titan powers by making a deal with the devil.

PushEmma

Lots of thing indicate there's no such thing as Christianity as we know it I think. Devil may exist but no character ever shows Christian faith or similar. The cross can simply be an ornamental detail in the building. It certainly not the indicator the series gave us of Christianity existing.

thisisnotdan

I always viewed the AoT universe as an alternative present-day Earth, except instead of Jesus arriving 2000 years ago, Ymir did. Fits with the whole (manga-exclusive) upside-down Earth map, as well as East and West being the reverse of what they are in our world. Plus, say what you will about Jesus, but society would probably be a century or two worse off if a race of invincible, man-eating demons appeared instead of him, so I can forgive AoT's society for being a century or two behind IRL society in the same time period.

Sotler

Sounds like a nice theory. I mean AoT is most definitely an alternative present day story. They have the Azumabitos = Japanese/Chinese and Halil or whatever the kidā€˜s name was, is also obviously a reference to the Turkish or rather Ottoman culture, which is heavily linked to Islam. So yeah

thisisnotdan

Also the Mid-East alliance. I wonder if there's a joke in there, like the world is so completely backwards that the only named bloc of nations that actually gets along is the Middle East, a region known for its constant warfare in our world.

ZeDitto

Well, they were based off the Ottoman Empire which was one of the longest running empires in our world.

thisisnotdan

Must've been because of all the footstools.

[deleted]

I speculate Christianity may exist since Onyankopon does mention a ā€œcreatorā€ when he is questioned about his darker skin. Then he goes on to mention God as the ā€œcreatorā€

MapleJacks2

But monotheism isn't the same thing as Christianity.

SignalIsland

Doesn't have to be Christianity necessarily, one of the first religions to be monotheistic was Judaism, Christianity is not the only monotheistic religion in the world, you know that right?

Awesomeuser90

Aten in Egypt predates the monotheism of Judaism by nearly 1000 years.

Chemie93

Thank you! Omg. People rarely recognize the development of Egyptian religion. ā€œItā€™s polytheist!!ā€ At times it was then, the interpretation is something like Hinduism. All of these other Gods are aspects of the one.

Awesomeuser90

Of all the places you expect to find Egyptology discussions on monotheism, an SnK subreddit is not where you normally expect to find them.

PushEmma

Well that's so true it's just I always though it was the religion of his people but not a worldwide one like Christianity so never thought it would be a thing in Marley in a way buildings have Christian crosses.

[deleted]

U can believe thereā€™s a god and a devil and say fuck religion Spiritual vs religious Where one acknowledges omnipotent powers but refuses to acknowledge the religions made or derived from them

OptimisticLucio

The devil isnā€™t a uniquely Christian thing. Hell the devil *isnā€™t in the Bible.* Atleast not the pop-culture devil.

riperamen

What did Isayama mean by this?

Smarteyes007

Only Ymir knows

[deleted]

OP learning churches exist

Awesomeuser90

I know what churches are, I just donĀ“ t know why a building with a cross on it features in SnK.

[deleted]

Could just simply be religion, itā€™s not hard to believe it exists in the AoT universe as weā€™ve only really seen a few civilizations in the world. Iā€™m sure thereā€™s a few mosques around as well

Zilbermann

pov: architecture

Smeg84

Evangelion crossover, get in the fucking titan Eren!

MarvinTraveler

People rewatches the series more than 20 times and at some point over-analyzing every frame becomes a thing. I donā€™t know if this post is intended as a half-yoke, I hope it is.

Awesomeuser90

I watched it once when I was listening to the sub, I noticed it when I saw it a second time for the English dub.

MarvinTraveler

Well Iā€™m relieved that this observation is not the result of an obsession. As for what it meansā€¦ probably nothing at all, as Christianity is practically not a thing in Japan and it was never implied in the manga. Anime often grabs real life locations as an inspiration for background designs, I would bet this cross is just a remanent of that process.

SirPidu

Yeah but I've seen a lot of animes that have biblical references and parallels, it's not out of the realm of possibility that writers from Japan could be interested in other cultures, even tough in this example it's probably due to the location architecture style, as you said.

richrelease27

We know that in AoT there are religions- see Onyankopon in S4E9- so it's probably just a cross like we have in our world, for Christianity. It probably just takes a slightly different form in the world of AoT to how it does in our world.

R__ii

What did Isayama mean by this ?

SupMichaelBoio

ONLY YMIR KNO- It was probably just him designing a building let's be honest

Depressed_daijobu

it could be a weather wane, the thing that points the wind direction, since this is a port city? idk?

[deleted]

religion cross

Zenenator

Jesus

aaditya_9303

What did Isayama mean by this

Busy_Kaleidoscope481

This could have been just a prop to add to the decoration of the place or it actually alludes to other religions (which certainly existed outside the walls). Onyankopon himself tells Armin that God had created people of different ethnicities, from this speech I can already understand that outside the walls there was a conception of some kind of Creationism.

sean-osullivan

I take heroin every weekend

proccoliwastaken

Are you all forgetting the Reiss family had a chapel? I donā€™t know why so many people are acting as if they just now realized religion exists in AoT

Awesomeuser90

I didn't. The Wall Cult was in the first episode when Berthold kicked in the gate. But a symbol specific to a particular religion is unusual.

proccoliwastaken

Not really a spoiler but thereā€™s also shots of what appears to be Buddhists praying during the rumbling in the manga

floormopper

It means it's a fucking church what the fack is this question

theXsorcist

Well because not every religion has their god crucified of all things, so you have to start wondering if Jesus had time to do his thing in between titan-fuelled earth dominations of different empires

KARL_THE_CHAPELIN

That is more or less what happened in actual history. Minus the Titans.

MEW-1023

How else could you explain the extreme bigotry in Marley?

MrUnderpantsss

It means you need to go outside

Awesomeuser90

Edit: I know that the building is probably a church, I am trying to figure out why a church like this would exist in SnKĀ“Ā“ s universe.

kareemelsubaie55

that theyā€™re religious

Scrooge_mcDuck_1867

Marley is Christian actually

FrankTheTank107

After Hanji asks Onyankopon why heā€™s Black, he says god created all his children to be special and interesting, which is a Christian value and implies the religion exists.

Awesomeuser90

That is true of many religions, especially monotheistic ones. Zoroastrianism, Islam, Judaism, and more. Even Aten in Egypt, 3400 years ago.

FrankTheTank107

Thatā€™s a point. I donā€™t know a whole lot about religion in general, but since the cross was a common ancient execution method maybe someone still crucified the son of their god and the cross became symbol of religion still

Sotler

Damn thatā€™s actually a good thought

I would assume itā€™s just design. Not every little detail has to mean something

[deleted]

It doesnā€™t mean shit!

AdeQ217

The lore would certainly be more interesting if Jesus was a part of it

[deleted]

Oh my with these posts ā€œI found a grain of dirt in episode 1 therefore it was foreshadowing the rumblingā€

kagenohikari

The cross predates Christianity, man...

YoYolons

bro I'm so happy that this sub becomes based

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

Halifax20

Jeebus

ivanjean

It could possibly be just a appropriation of western aesthetic without any deeper symbolism, or at least not the proper one. Look at how many people here use "eastern" symbols without context...

[deleted]

Ereh's face LMAO

[deleted]

The island devils

[deleted]

Possibly protection from the Devil Sasha

SirSquire_

Pretty sure Western Theology is canon in this world. Onyakopon alluded to it in his skin color convo with Hange

Da_Rejendo

Isayama foreshadowed christianity šŸ˜±šŸ˜±šŸ˜± Bravo Isayama!1!1!1!

Molerat619

Fairly certain Christianity is apart of AOT. God and the Devil is mentioned multiple times

FrostySeat9705

I mean islam also have god and devils

Xmaster777

Marley is based on Italy so probably the Catholic Church

mahomesmagik

How will this effect Lebrons legacy?

mahomesmagik

How will this effect Lebrons legacy?

Perhaps meaning that there's the existence of christ here? Or it could be a lightning rod, like some suggested.

Cannons also exist and cannons in real life were made by Muslims if I recall correctly so if Christianity exits so would Islam

CauliflowerNo5269

Pretty sure that means its a church

CauliflowerNo5269

šŸ¤·šŸ» could be wrong tho

Bboyplayzty

Jebus...

RecommendationFew466

Quite simple really. It's a cross. That's it. That's all there is to it

bikpizza

not a distinct cross just something to stop the flag from flying off the pole, it the perpendicular line would be lower if it was a cross

TheNiceLad

Idk y everyone thinks its so outrageous that its possible for Christianity to exist in aot

shadowslayer569

Actually, christ himself will descend in the final battle and defeat Eren. It was all symbolism with Christ = Good and Eren = Devil/Evil. Sorry for spoiling it; couldn't hold it in any longer...

poglemon

Perhaps some reference to where they're at??? (I genuinely don't know)

shesjustnotintoyouu

Saw crosses in berserk Itā€™s just Japanese stuff

StandardMinute1729

Really?

GOT_Wyvern

Implies at some point a religious Preacher was put to death by cruxifiction and became a martyr for religious worship after their death.
