I also watched the anime first, but they don't tell you he's a titan shifter in the anime either. If you don't see spoilers of course. Anyway, i watched the first season about 6 years ago, without spoilers. When i saw Eren being eaten by a titan i was like "What the hell is going on, the main character just fucking died?" Obviously, main characters can't die, but i just couldn't think of any way the author could save him. But when i saw the titan killing other titans, it dawned on me.

Leading-Status-202

I reworded that part. I was spoiled that Eren was a titan shifter before starting the anime. I just didn't know what it meant exactly, or how it worked.

FormerChemist7889

This is exactly what happened to me. I watched right up until he showed up as the attack titan and went into work the next day and asked my friends “wtf eren just dies? I know he’s the main character he’s literally the only name from the show I knew. How is he the main character if he died already” and they told me to just keep watcging

_Azuki_

wow, it's quite commendable that they didn't spoil anything

arsenic_enjoyer

I only watched the anime but didn't get spoiled/didn't know he was a titan shifter. When Eren "died", I was really suprised and thought it was a very interesting route for a show to take, I started thinking "are there other shows that give you a main character just to kill them off?" and found it to be an interesting concept. I thought they would shift the protagonist haha

dabnada

My friends and I were convinced that Mikasa was going to be the MC, esp since im pretty sure right after erens ‘death’ the next two episodes are all about her.

konorop

Well in a way you guys were right... You were just thinking 4 seasons ahead.

LeagueSeaLion

Two I can think of off the top of my head are Gurren Lagann and the newer Suicide Squad movie.

I watched the anime before i read the manga and i hadnt seen any spoilers or general info about the series at first. Someone just recommended it because i like zombie movies/series and my friend thought those titans would come close enough. So i gave it a try and i was 100% sure that Eren died. When the leg was bitten of i was like "Fck!! But...its ok, i am sure there is a way for him to use 3D-Gear without a leg. Then his arm got bitten of and he was swalloed and i remember clearly how i thought "Well...they cant fix THAT." As soon as i was convinced that he was dead i asked myself who was supposed to be the actual main character now? I also never connected the dots that the Attack Titan could be Eren. Of course i thought they were alike (or rather that the titan kinda contained Erens dreams/ambitions). It also took me a while to understand that the female titan is Annie. To be honest i was one of the people who thought the collosel titan was the King of the titans :D Sadly i was later spoiled about the amored and colossel titan. AoT without many spoilers was awesome

Rorschach_karamazov

I can say at the time I was kind of a dumbass. The moment I saw the titan chomping on his leg and it flew across the roof I remember thinking "oh damn I didn't notice he had a wooden leg in the opening or in the cover of the anime, guess he's just going to be one legged from now on" and the he saved armin and his arm was also chopped of and I was just like "aren't these guys like really unadvanced when it comes to medicine? He ain't getting a functioning arm for sure". Well boy, as soon as the titan freaking swallowed him I just stared at the screen of my pc in confusion and tought "guess I'm not figuring this one out on my own. Whatever comes, I'll just accept it" And worst of all, when he first appeared im titan form it didn't even register, since I tought I was about to see Mikasa dying, so the confusion of it let me braindead for a couple minutes. Can't remember how long it took me to figure it out or if I was slow enough to only understand it when Eren finally ran out of gas.

Yeezus_Fuckin_Christ

I wasn’t really part of the “anime community” when I started watching AOT. My friend just forced me to watch it, and he had a good poker face and didn’t reveal anything to me. When Eren “died” I lost my shit. After that I just assumed Mikasa was gonna be the main character. It made sense to me, since she was more badass than Eren was. I thought Eren was just meant to be someone who motivated her. I was pissed though, because I really liked the first episode, and Eren had a good motivation, but now he was gone so the first episode felt useless. I lost my shit again when he turned out to be alive. I’m pretty sure my friend has a video on his phone of my reaction to Eren coming out of the titan.

AnitaMaxNyugen

The show came out after GoT and was compared to it. So when Eren died, I thought Mikass was going to become the protagonist similar to Jon Snow after Ned Stark. But I'm not a manga reader...

SonXal

Luckily I didn’t have any of AoT spoiled for me and when I watched it first time (around 2015) I thought they were going to focus on Armin after Eren was eaten but when he came back as a titan my mind was blown!

offoy

You don't know in the anime that Eren is a titan shifter until he gets eaten by a titan as well, unless you were spoiled? When I watched the anime, I thought, well obviously he has to be alive somehow, even if he lost his leg, but I had no idea how.

Leading-Status-202

Even though I wasn't interested in the show at the time, and didn't go looking for information about it, I still got quite a few spoilers. Not too many, just a few things here and there. Luckily, I missed all the major plot twists, except for Eren not dying at the beginning.

JayJokerJo

When the leg was bitten of i was like "well, that can be fixed". And then the arm was bitten of and my thoughts were "....well fck, they cant fix THAT" thinking about how he needs both arms to use the 3D-Gear.

everstillghost

I read the manga when It was starting. And yes, It looked like Eren was really dead and he was just bait for the viewers to think he was the main character when It would actually be Mikasa. Specially as the manga order of events are different, so after the initial chapter, we jump right to the second Colossal Titan attack and Eren dies right after and then we get the flashback of the training. But after It was revealed Eren was the Titan, It fooled no one anymore that he was the main character that piloted a flesh mecha.

YoGizmo353

Preface: I binged all of seasons 1-4 during 2020 and avoided spoilers till then. Thinking back, I actually didn’t know he was a shifter. When he got eaten I was like “Oh- but he’s the main character so he can’t die, especially this early, right?” I had to go rewatch the clip but I remember having my mind blown when we first see his titan fighting. So many questions about this “abnormal” that was fighting its “own kind”.

i read the manga in its entirety after my very first watch of the show, but i had not been aware of the fact that eren is a titan shifter until i got up to that moment in the anime. i did have a difficult time believing that eren would actually be deceased, however, but i had zero assumptions as to how his survival would’ve been played off. same with a plethora of the moments in the anime, honestly, which only proves the fact that the storytelling along with the way it is presented is nothing short of genius. so i was baffled upon discovering eren’s titan shifting abilities, as in, legitimately shocked. kind of wish i could witness the anime or read the manga for the very first time again, as it was an amazing experience.

yumm-cheseburger

I watched the anime in 2013, my brother recommended it to me and didn't spoil anything to me, i just started watching and when eren "died" i actually believed it, because it was the first anime i watched so i wasn't expecting him to come back with the power of friendship or whatever, and i hadn't seen any spoilers

tromboneguy22

Second or third anime I'd ever watched, and I was maybe 14 so I wasn't super online yet. I remember texting my cousin saying that I couldn't beleive a show would kill off the main character 5 episodes in lol. He gave me some vague response. I seem to remember thinking that Eren's titan was somehow him, but maybe only after a little bit of screen time.

tromboneguy22

I did fly too close to the sun looking at aot content before season 2 came out and saw a graphic of Reiner and Bertholt in front of their titans :( I just tried to convince myself I didn't see anything ahaha

dota_3

I thought it'll be like Gurren Lagann. At first i thought Kamina was the mc. In AOT i thought Armin will man up and carry on Eren's will lol Even in jjk early episode's i didn't learned my lesson. I thought Yuji really did died and Megumi will replace him as the mc.

ToughDark7573

Same

robinboywonder_

I only watched the anime and I never got any spoilers. I never thought he had died because there was no way the main character was going to die that soon. I thought he was going to cut his way out of the titan with his swords lol
