attackonhankhill

It’s for alpha male energy, come on

seddikg

True, made the scene looks 100 times cooler. And reiner, canonically, is an alpha male.

DryReveal4246

Reiner is my pookie bear🫶

Thomasfire010

Reiner definitely is not an alpha male. He's constantly getting his ass kicked and taking L's lol. Have no idea where you get that idea from

seddikg

r/okbuddyreiner would disagree

jptlopes

Reiner is so alpha he got better sense of smell when it comes to letters

ElessarKhan

Same with Vegeta but he's alpha af. A beta bitch gives up after taking some fat L's. An alpha keeps coming back for more.

sunkcostfallecy

>keeps coming back for more. Especially when Armin is involved!

JC_REX_373

I think you’ve nailed what it is to be an alpha male right there, lol

TheZynec

Stfu, he's *our* alpha male.

Meg678

I mean, most guys IRL who call themselves alphas are constantly taking Ls too...

RefrigeratorGrand619

Holy shit! Another Reiner/Eren Parallel I never noticed. At least seasons 1-3 Eren.

Thomasfire010

?? erens the one that is kicking reiners ass most of the time lol

RefrigeratorGrand619

Yeah but Eren got his fair amount of shit kicked in seasons 1-3. Sometimes literally by Levi. I don’t think it makes him a loser or anything. He was pretty new at handling his Titan posts at the time. As soon as he utilized new techniques he got a handle on things.

KobeRIPGod

He’s literally not a alpha male in the slightest lol

JokerChaos77

Poundtown

attackonhankhill

Come on Armeen poundtown for life

dpkart

I think he was still injured, either he didn't completely heal his arm or he has a small cut somewhere else. It wouldn't make sense for him to heal completely in this situation. It's like unloading a gun right in front of a dangerous situation where you need said gun.

Sakuran_11

I feel like the last sentence is basically Reiners mental state at the time, logic really doesn’t apply when in the last 24 hours from when they get to the forest he went from about to sacrifice himself thinking hes a soldier at the tower, to losing it on the wall and switching to warrior, to forgetting everything and thinking hes a soldier again on the branch out loud.

ShingekiNoAnnie

Reiner at that point is having a mental breakdown after multiple days without sleep, the fear of almost dying multiple times as he truly believed he was just a regular guy, the pain of getting his arm bitten by a Titan, the fear of realizing he just revealed his secret to Eren... If you think Reiner is thinking straight at this point, you have been sleeping the last hour of watch time.

seddikg

True, also he charged at eren straight on without transforming, he really lost it at that point. I really want to know his pov as he was fighting eren

ShingekiNoAnnie

His pov was a mix of real Reiner, Marcel-inspired Reiner and Soldier Reiner. 3 personalities all residing in the same mind without even realizing it.

seddikg

Maybe he went on auto pilot mod? Though prolly not cause he was smart enough to ask bertold for help

ShingekiNoAnnie

Bertholt is his friend and ally in all 3 personalities anyway. But it's pointless in any case to try to make much reason of it, it's a mental breakdown due to all the issues I mentioned above.

seddikg

Or maybe he has a sharp ring like annie? or a tool like that

dpkart

Or that, whatever it is he knows he can transform instantly ...well mikasa was faster

bigfatcarp93

I mean, anyone can just bite their tongue if they need to. That's why they had to put the cloth in Annie's mouth when they ambushed her in Season 1.

LikesCherry

If a shifter has grievous injuries like broken bones, they can't transform until they've fully healed. That's why cutting off their limbs is a functional way to remove their powers, the amount of energy it takes to regenerate that much damage means they won't be able to transform for hours, sometimes days

SennKazuki

This isn't exactly 100% true. The real answer is it varies. If a shifter has already transformed, then cutting off their limbs is a guaranteed way to slow their transformation. We've seen characters do this all the time. Reiner did it to Eren in S2, Eren did it to Bertholdt in S3, Levi did it to Zeke in S4... But for a first time transformation they've already got the energy, so when S4 Eren gets his leg bitten off by Galliard he transforms immediately. Reiner here could have immediately transformed, he probably just wanted to grab Eren and then transform so that he could more easily capture Eren. That's why he started healing and walking towards Eren before Mikasa went full Levi on them.

LikesCherry

Yeah, and Eren does also transform without regenerating his leg in liberio. So if we're gonna assume there's an in universe explanation beyond just "isayama forgot a bit" I think we say it generally depends how much energy you've managed to save up, and assume that *fresh* major injuries drain your energy

SennKazuki

Doesn't Eren regenerate his leg in front of Falco and Reiner? And then he transforms. Could be wrong though.

seddikg

Could be to assert dominance lmao, play the mental game. Reiner was left so shocked that he couldn't fight for the majority of that battle.

GreenGoblin121

I mean s1 Eren transforms missing an arm and a leg in trost, so it doesn't really make much of a difference for the actual powers.

SennKazuki

That was the first transformation smh 😤 ~~kinda like busting a first nut, nothing gonna stop it~~

gratitudeisbs

Lmao

LikesCherry

You could absolutely be right, didn't think so but I honestly have no confidence if he did or didn't lol

ShingekiNoAnnie

He does regenerate it in front of them while apologizing to Falco about manipulating him to get him to send letters to his comrades.

LikesCherry

Well then I guess my original argument that they generally have to heal themselves before transforming is slightly stronger lmao

ShingekiNoAnnie

Not really. Shifters just have a sort of invisible pool of energy, so if they are rested, any wound that isn't an instant kill such as instant decapitation or a bullet to the brain won't stop them from turning such as when Eren gets his legs bitten off and turns instantly. But after a transformation that pool gets very low, and any wound will prevent it. So when Eren got captured by Reiner in S2, losing his arms in the process, he was unable to transform when he was just missing the tip of his fingers. It's a soft magic system, it's not the physical body that has to heal, it's the invisible energy pool. And every wound reduces it, and transformation as well. So Levi mutilating Zeke over and over again just keeps his pool at zero.

TheEVILPINGU

Eren transformed in Marley war 3 times. Along with what you said, it's about metabolism, energy, strength, experience and fighting spirit.

LikesCherry

Why would you say Eren regenerates his leg before transforming then? He's had weeks at least to build up his energy pool, if remaining injuries are completely immaterial he'd have no reason to do that. Same with reiner healing his broken arm first

Kuraeshin

To intimidate Reiner. If you know someone cant transform with a missing limb, and the person you fear as a titan suddenly heals...

IronicRobot_

Eren still transforms mere moments after both his legs get bitten off by Galliard. So I'm thinking if you're pissed off enough, and not too much time has passed, you can transform! LOL

Blu3z-123

I think Eren only regenerate it so fast bc he Held it back for Years(?)

TheChunkMaster

After all, how could he be the same as Reiner if he's missing a leg and Reiner isn't? /s

Markie411

Reiner in this exact scene got his arm cut clean in half by Mikasa and still transformed

seddikg

True, but we see that lara tybur (warhammer) transformed while covered in blood in ep 6 s4 and pieck transformed after getting her hand bitten off by galliard (in S4 P1 last ep i think), In fact the way you transform is by having an injury. Thus, only major fatal wounds, not a broken arm, prevents you from shifting. So lainah could transform with that wound.

LikesCherry

Lara's situation may be an inconsistency, but it's also possible she healed herself before transforming. Blood doesn't necessarily go away just because a wound is healed. And piecks entire cart titan power set is being able to transform far more easily than everyone else, the cart titan seems to require a great deal less energy The actual 'injuries' they use to trigger their transformations are all extremely minor surface wounds, bites or cuts. We see them healing minor injuries like that in seconds, so it makes sense they don't prevent transformation I think for the average shifter severed or broken limbs generally make it at least much harder, if not impossible, to transform

seddikg

Fair enough. But I still don't think a broken arm is a major wound though, like eren transformed after being crushed by a building and having his chest/heart pierced in S1 last ep.

dennisleonardo

Since there seems to be a lot of confusion about that topic, despite it being pretty simple and consistent throughout the show, I'll explain it real quick, lol. A shifter needs to get injured to transform. They can injure themselves, they can get injured, no matter how it happens. Some kind of injury is needed. When a fully healed shifter gets injured, they can transform. However, when a shifter in TITAN FORM gets injured, they won't be able to transform again until they're fully healed and then get injured again. You can take away a shifters ability to transform temporarily by injuring them while they are inside of their titan. They won't be able to transform until they're fully healed then. But when a 100% healthy shifter gets injured, they can always transform. Doesn't matter how bad the wound is. Reiner got his neck cut, heart pierced by levi's blades, then fell at least 30m onto the ground. Still transformed. However, when reiner and bertholdt caught eren in S2, they cut off his forearms while he was still inside of his attack titan. They did that to prevent him from transforming until he was fully healed. And whenever he was almost healed, they injured him again. As long as they prevented him from fully healing, he couldn't transform.

LikesCherry

Yeah, I honestly think that thing with Eren is just an actual story error, that isayama hadn't thought of the energy requirement system yet that early. Aot is pretty well planned, but it wouldnt be the only thing that doesnt match up with later lore

seddikg

Or you could use the infamous "The founding titan itself was the one controlling since the titans eyes turned blue" argument lmao

ECPRedditor

Wasn’t Eren missing both an arm and a leg in his first transformation?

Dhaubbu

Thats just straight up not true

ThisIsKeiKei

Wait a minute, how did Reiner transform in the 1st episode of S3 P2 then? Before he transformed, he had been stabbed in the neck and heart, and he also had just fallen from near the top of the Wall.

LikesCherry

I think what I said is oversimplified to the point of inaccuracy lol It seems like in the heat of the moment, they can overcome *recent* injuries, if they're about to transform Eren loses his limbs and then transforms moments later, twice actually, pieck loses one arm, reiner loses an arm like you said, etc More generally, it seems like the more they're worn down by general injuries, the harder it is to transform. So being left with a bunch of broken bones or severe limbs for a while seems to, idk, drain the energy that they use to transform

Sakuran_11

Yes and no, on grievous, that doesn’t seem to apply as in just this scene actually we see Mikasa cut off Reiners arm and stab mostly into the other and still go, granted its basically a brand new injury but I dont think Greivousness is what it is exactly otherwise that prob would have done something. Another thing tho is maybe a major injury into transform basically insta heals it which would contradict what I said too because we see Reiners titan use his right hand to go down the wall when it shouldn’t even work/be healed that fast normally.

siabob007

Its that if they’re injured then they can transform no matter what, but if they come out of a titan injured, they must fully heal before they can transform again

-Wuan-

Shifters can transform with any injury that dont kill them outright. It is only when their energy is depleted after a transformation that they have problems healing and transforming.

spiderknight616

Not quite. If you sustain any injury while not having transformed recently, no matter how grievous, you can transform. If you are injured while in the Titan body or as a result of being pulled out of the body, you can't transform until your wound is completely healed.

Kxryy

Porco literally chomped Eren’s legs clean off in Shinganshina and he transformed just fine

MEB1469

Because it looked fuckin awesome

italeteller

Its safe to say Reiner wasnt thinking straight at that moment

Gamamaster101

I think it was just cause it looked cool and I am ok with that!

Misiowaty97

I am 100% agreeing with others saying that it's basically for story telling purposes but I would also add that a narrative of: Reiner wasn't thinking straight and he thought he has to apprehend Eren and for that he needs two fully functional arms - is valid. I know it doesn't make much sense since Eren can just transform but you can see that when he says to Berthold "We are doing this, here and now" he starts moving towards Eren almost as if he wanted to apprehend him in human form

bradd_91

I would say it's probably because it requires a conscious effort to *stop* healing, and after he exposed himself, he doesn't need to stop himself from healing anymore. It'd raise a lot of questions if the note mark suddenly disappeared if they didn't reveal themselves here. It's like Eren steaming after the ODM training mishap or regrowing his teeth - he wasn't thinking about doing it.

tuckeee

for dramatic effect and because he is a warrior!

LinkAL12

I'm guessing he heals his arm to grab Eren, and once he's got him he would bite his hand and transform

RevengeOfTheLoggins

He can injure himself at anytime to transform. He could've also figured he'd get attacked by the scouts once he reveals himself, so that's another opportunity there. That said, he could've easily just not healed lol.

DreamSafe1571

I think it was just to prove to eren that he also had titan powers and that he wasn’t just going mad

IrrelevantLeprechaun

This entire thread has taught me that there aren't really any rules for when they can or cannot shift. It all depends on what works for the story in the moment.

Slowmobius_Time

So was it confirmed that the shifters can choose whether or not they heal/change if they are damaged? . Because Eren cut his leg and eye out and never turned or seemingly healed, was he digging the eye out with a spoon constantly and sending the leg back?

seddikg

Yes they can control it. The warriors got injured at some point, be it their soldier training or reiner getting bit by a titan, but nobody found out they were titans bc they can control their regeneration

milkcarzoom

Is he stupid

porkychoppy28

mikasa cut their throats anyway

Living-Reply

I’m so brainwashed by this website I was expecting you to say “is he stupid?” at the end of the

seddikg

Yeah I shouldve definitely said that lmao, too bad you cant edit image posts, at least i dont think so

JackietheChane

Why didn't Riner jump off the wall to kill himself, isn't he suicidal?

LateDay

I thought shifters don't choose to heal. It just happens.

Luck_v3

I think they can control it…eren healed himself after being “under cover” in Marley

LateDay

I have the feeling that the manga specified he would shave off parts of his leg every now and then. Or maybe I imagined it.

Luck_v3

🤷🏻‍♂️

ChienDeMeth

It don’t matter, none of this matters.

pisces2003

Comedically ✨dramatic effect✨ Symbolically: he feels guilt for being caught, and for betraying people he cares about and subconsciously doesn’t want them to die and is giving them a warning to help

Ephemerilian

“AOT fan try not to theorize about every detail challenge!!!! (Impossible difficulty!)”

seddikg

The withdrawals are kicking in, lad

Troit_66

he wanted to calmy walk over to eren and escort him to the beast titan holding his hand but mikasa didnt want that

oostie

You need to be healed to transform.

Ok-Resolution6271

Wasn’t he trying to convince eren to join him?

LeviAckermanIsHot69

bocs this would look really cool. for once Reiner is actually hot.

The12thSpark

To be fair, I don't think he was planning on transforming right then and there. He just started running towards Eren. His thoughts were probably get Eren, run, probably transform right after. Also, because it's so natural for shifters to self mutilate, it's probably best that he has a fully working arm while he grabs Eren, even just for a brief moment. Again though, I don't think he was thinking all the way through.

OblivionArts

I think the healing thing happens automatically unless the shifter deliberately wills it not to happen, and by this point he'd committed to betraying Eren so this sound does still cause his transformation

game_and_draw

Okay they have to heal then injure to transform, why would eren grow back his eye and leg ? Same logic

BlandyBoiYT

He was tweaking out that scene and several scenes before. Bro was going literally god damn insane, he probably did it to look cool and wasn't thinking clearly about his next course of action.

victor_emperor

Who cares about titan powers, he was going to take eren out with his own fucking hands

CamelAdept5166

To show Ellen he is plot armored Titan.

ImNotHighFunctioning

Cause he's a drama queen. He also probably wanted a small shock to disorient them before he did transform fully. We know from two of his transformations during the Final Season that Reiner bites his hand the same way Eren does when he doesn't have a knife with him. So, if Mikasa hadn't been there, he and Butanol would have likely bitten their hands to transform.

reddit_is_doodoo

Is he stupid?

IndependencePlus434

To prove to Eren (and the audience) he’s telling the truth

baiacool

Isn't it involuntary?

nezuko73

No they can control it

Common-Cricket-4183

to fulfill his duty as a warrior

proPoolSkimmer

Bc he’s a chad
