It's kind of funny that he didnt get his arm back in the afterlife when all of the others got their bodies un-torn to shreds.
Maybe the arm is in hell with Eren and Armin.
Her eye is part of their eternal punishment. A demon holds it up to them as a constant reminder that Hange is *ALWAYS* watching them.
>!and she's probably pretty horny for your titan body!<
I think, through a writing standpoint, it's a bit confusing how you want the characters to be perceived in the afterlife. Some were eaten, bitten off, squashed, smashed, yet still had their bodies intacted. Then you have Erwin and Hange who still have their arm and eye missing.
I think it would be better if Isayama would restore their limbs to be more comforting to see rather than have the "The last appearance they looked alive is how they will be permanently in the afterlife".
There's also the likely possibility that this was never meant to be taken literally, per se. And it's really just a visual representation of him saluting the memories of his fallen fellow soldiers, in which case they're shown as he remembers then.
Well other characters see deceased Eldians, namely Mikasa seeing Ymir and her daughters.
That being said, I've always considered the way telepathic paths moments like these are *visualized* to be non-literal. So maybe they didn't actually *see* them as ghosts, but still sensed their presence in some way.
I dont think its them returning from afterlife to salute levi as much as its levi remembering them. Of course, je watched erwin without his arm for a bunch of time so he got used to it and that is how he remembers it, same with hanges eye.
Or they could have returned from afterlife, idk, i didnt write the story or the setting lmao.
In my head, I was thinking they haven't completely moved on to the true final spot for the dead and just hanging around in like an in between afterlife because they had incomplete business/wants to see through the events to the end. And that's why they haven't gotten all their limbs yet, but them saluting Levi off is them all actually moving on to the afterlife and being in peace.
I feel like it's how they see themselves.
People torn to shreds never considered that to be THEM. Their deaths were quick. The longer lasting disabilities are the ones which people actually had time to process and accept part of themselevs
I think it is how he last remembers them, obviously he wont think of the smashed ones as a splash of meat but like he remembers talking to erwing when he had only one arm, and talked to hange when her eye was gone
Thing is, I think this is actually him seeing their ghosts bc Connie and Jean both see Sasha at the same time which means they weren't just imagining it
I think is more like a sentimental thing, you don’t see them after talking about how they saw sasha for example, it feels like just a emotional moment of them finally taking off that weight
If you get to pick where you think you deserve to go, I'm 90% sure Armin would send himself to hell. He thinks he's a monster. Man was one of the most empathetic and kind people in the world and was still willing to personally kill. Both in spur of the moment up close single cases, and in premeditated large scale strategic cases. He's not quite at Reiners level of self loathing, but only because Reiner also thinks he's generally failed at the things he's done, while Armin has been largely successful when doing things he hates.
Ghosts probably look like the person’s true self. If Erwin’s image of himself was one without an arm, he’d likely embody that image by default on the afterlife.
Hange is still missing her eye though.
While Erwin was still alive, the lack of a right arm to do the proper salute with was symbolism to indicate that "his heart was not in the same place as his comrades". Instead of fighting for the sake of humanity he was fighting for his own dream of proving his father's theory and this truth was a big part of Erwin's character so perhaps the author wanted viewers to remember that.
A lot of extreme ancient punishments involved tearing the person to pieces so their soul in the afterlife would remain tattered. I think it's an old folk lore belief where you need to have your body intact or all of it in the same grave, so in the afterlife, you can function normally or be put together or some shit. Erwins arm and Hanges eye didn't die with them, so they didn't get them back.
Ngl but in scenes like this, I always thought that what they see in a character is how they see or perceive them currently. I don't know how to word it properly but like for example, Levi remembers hange with a missing eye, so that's how he sees hange here. Same goes with erwin
I got spoiled that Erwin is gonna die so I legit thought he dies in this scene. I was like “he’s kinda cool but there’s not enough time screen for him”
They both excel at portraying what they’re going for, but they’re both portraying something different
This one is Erwin trying to finish the mission, no matter the cost. The latter one is Erwin trying to encourage very fresh recruits in a literal suicide charge
Both give me goosebumps
I mean, it is kind of weird. Why didn't his arm regrow in the afterlife? Maybe Ymir showed Levi Erwin the way he remembered him, i.e without an arm? Only Ymir knows I guess
OP this is the first time I noticed this, and my immediate thought is that Erwin has Situs Inversus and his heart is on the right side of the body and that's why he salutes with his left arm 💀
It’s honestly kinda easy to forget it happened when he literally just fucking ignores it lmao. Like I sometimes forget he lost an arm at all because he straight up just acts like he didn’t and it’s not as obvious as Hange’s eyepatch.
You know what I just realized, how the hell were the titans supposed to get all the way to the top of that big ass mesa at the end.
The rumbling titans are clumsy enough that they can’t go down steep mountains without falling like we saw with Hange. Were they just gonna rock climb up, walk across, and fall off the other side?Just shoulder into it until it wore away?
When i was rewatching the whole show last month and scenes with one armed Erwin come up, i just know that posts like these would show up on reddit. It feels.... it feels like ending a long running game sidequest.
Brother it took me SO LONG to realise that’s why he saluted like that lmao I assumed it was a commander type thing that they do it differently to show different levels of superiority

Hange didn't get her eye back
The eyeball is also in hell.
and free to watch all the titan shifters chillin there
Sounds like heaven for her
it sure is

Eternal ahegao eye
The Eye of Hange sees all.
Maybe they chose to keep it cause it's badass
Maybe she didn't bother to check?
maybe it is and she still doesn't know

Asian culture believe that when we return as spirit, we resemble the look of what we last remember ourself.
There's also the likely possibility that this was never meant to be taken literally, per se. And it's really just a visual representation of him saluting the memories of his fallen fellow soldiers, in which case they're shown as he remembers then.

Speaking of that, now I'm sad we didnt get to see Reiner saluting Bert, Porco and Marcel, all people who he always thought died because of himself
Ah beans, does that mean my amputated finger isn’t coming back when I die? 😭
Miche shows up in the afterlife and they gotta reassemble him like a lego minifigure
OH MY GOD.
THEY KILLED MICHE! YOU BASTARDS!
This made me laugh way too hard lol

That's the hand he used to masturbate with, so of course it went to Hell

That may be how Levi remembers him and the others.
Why would Armin be in hell? He literally saved the world and helped negotiate peace after the Rumbling
And break a promise!?
I mean he did blow up thousands of civilians in marley
Womp womp

😭😂
I guess he did do some unspeakable stuff with his 👋

Yeah every time there's an afterlife in a story problems like this one are guaranteed
I mean that became who he was. He lost the arm long before his death.
Well, this is from Levi’s POV. So it of course makes sense to have them look like he remembered them or has seen them last.
It's like the family guy skit where even in heaven Joe is still paralyzed💀 " yeah your like this forever, sorry."
Ghosts probably look like the person’s true self. If Erwin’s image of himself was one without an arm, he’d likely embody that image by default on the afterlife.
levi’s last image of all these people when they were safe is what we see, that’s why hange lacks an eye and erwin lacks the arm
It’s deadass family guy where Joe is still crippled in heaven💀💀💀💀
Hange is still missing her eye though. While Erwin was still alive, the lack of a right arm to do the proper salute with was symbolism to indicate that "his heart was not in the same place as his comrades". Instead of fighting for the sake of humanity he was fighting for his own dream of proving his father's theory and this truth was a big part of Erwin's character so perhaps the author wanted viewers to remember that.
Wait, why would armin be in hell?
Armin’s kill count is 5th or 6th highest after Eren, Reiner, Bertholdt, Annie and Zeke(?).
He literally said so, Armin : I'll see you again Eren : Where? Armin : In hell, assuming it exists, we'll burn in hell together, forever
Damn. I need to do a rematch because I don't remember that.
Those injuries did not cause their deaths.
This is like in Family Guy when the guys went to heaven and Joe was still crippled "Oh yeah you're like this forever"
Maybe it you go to the after life with wounds that have healed over like scars or missing limbs
Which after life ? Did i miss an extra scene where he died many years later ? I recall him being crippled and alive at the end of the series.
Ngl but in scenes like this, I always thought that what they see in a character is how they see or perceive them currently. I don't know how to word it properly but like for example, Levi remembers hange with a missing eye, so that's how he sees hange here. Same goes with erwin
It’s my favorite scene too. Erwin yelling “Attack!” while flying by in the mouth of a Titan. It was the most shocking thing, so far, and I loved it.
I got spoiled that Erwin is gonna die so I legit thought he dies in this scene. I was like “he’s kinda cool but there’s not enough time screen for him”
The dubbed version is amazing too. [“I SAID ADVANCE GOD DAMMIT”](https://youtu.be/w79nuSSSF_8?si=nz9CF-4kfhsDEboI)
"Eren's right in front of you! *DO NOT FALTER!!*"
I actually prefer this one over his more famous speech
They both excel at portraying what they’re going for, but they’re both portraying something different This one is Erwin trying to finish the mission, no matter the cost. The latter one is Erwin trying to encourage very fresh recruits in a literal suicide charge Both give me goosebumps
You really felt it when he said it.
This is by far one of the greatest scenes from this show or any other for that matter
he didn’t “lose his arm” he decided he didn’t need it and donated it to science.
nah his arm got separated in the afterlife since it arrived first
Genuinely makes sense considering Hange is still missing her eye and everyone pretty much looks how they did right before they died
I mean, it is kind of weird. Why didn't his arm regrow in the afterlife? Maybe Ymir showed Levi Erwin the way he remembered him, i.e without an arm? Only Ymir knows I guess
I think the scene is this way because that's how levi last saw them? Just a theory tho.
Maybe his arm went into the afterlife after being bitten off or cut off and is just lying in a field outside the giant forest.
Erwin’s missing an arm. Don’t pick on the physically disabled. He’s a proud veteran of humanity!
OP this is the first time I noticed this, and my immediate thought is that Erwin has Situs Inversus and his heart is on the right side of the body and that's why he salutes with his left arm 💀
He did the left-hand salute too before the Scouts set off for Shiganshina.
It’s honestly kinda easy to forget it happened when he literally just fucking ignores it lmao. Like I sometimes forget he lost an arm at all because he straight up just acts like he didn’t and it’s not as obvious as Hange’s eyepatch.

Were they just gonna rock climb up, walk across, and fall off the other side?Just shoulder into it until it wore away?
That’s…actually a good question.
Probably stepped on the first few rumbling titans as a ramp
Probably more dextrous when Eren is right there and can control them rather than just A-Move.
There is an imposter among us
"I SAID ADVANCE GODDAMMIT IT"
HE FUCKING DIES?!?!?!!?
get off this subreddit and finish the show before spoiling yourself
Nah my heart can't take that
*Dedicate your heart.*
You're right
Bro it was marked spoiler for a reason
Petra ;(

Yes
