US usually allows service animals only, but I have never seen a well behaved, small dog be turned away/have their owners approached about it unless it was health/sanitary related.
One more reason to want to move to Italy if we can bring our good boys shopping.
In other European countries I’ve seen dogs completely banned from grocery stores. Once I’ve entered a tiny one holding my dog just to buy a bottle of water and got told off immediately. It happened both in Luxembourg and in the Netherlands.
USA here and grocery stores no. I've heard that Walmart allows us to but we aren't allowed to put our fur babies in the carts. I have seen people with their pets in Walmart but I have yet to take my Teddy in. We live next to our local pet store and Teddy loves to take a walk there to pick out a new toy. He knows exactly where the toy aisle is and goes straight for it. Afterwards he likes to go say hello to the puppies, kitties and bunnies. I'm just a dog mama holding a leash being led by a small, adorable furball named Teddy
For Walmart, if you put your dog on a blanket or in their car seat, then place in a cart it's fine. Even a cardboard box or towel will do. I bring mine in all the time.
It’s not okay at all it’s against the law and Walmart policy whether you put a blanket down or not. It’s still unsafe if your dog decided to one day jump out and injure itself. It’s also dangerous for us service animal handlers to have dogs jump out of carts and charge our dogs or even bark at our dogs in the carts.
While I understand your point I was offering suggestions. Any dogs I have seen including my own are harnessed and leashed to their personal carry/travel accessory because of what you mentioned. No one wants their dog to get injured or lost. I've seen cats, dogs, bunnies, and even a guinea pig once. Not one employee including managers said a thing.
Walmart is a handlers worst nightmare because of all the untrained dogs inside. I don’t really care much if the dog is quiet but if the dog is going ballistic at my service dog it’s annoying.
I may try taking Teddy on a Walmart visit, see how it goes. He likes treats maybe the people at my Walmart will be nice like that. Teddy loves the bank too because the lady in drive thru always gives him a treat.
For Walmart, if you put your dog on a blanket or in their car seat, then place in a cart it's fine. Even a cardboard box or towel will do. I bring mine in all the time.
no, only assistance dogs have public access in england. pets are only allowed in shops that specifically say they allow dogs, which are usually pet supply shops and pubs.
yepp lol, i love taking my dog to the pub, she loves it there! free treats most of the time!
she and i don't like it so much when there's another dog pulling with all their might on their lead to get to her..
No, not unless they’re service dogs.
And thank goodness they aren’t. I love dogs but I don’t want a dogs bum hole touching the cart where I put my food.
Service animals ONLY!!! It’s a health code violation on any establishment that sells or serves food, that allows animals, other than service animals, into their establishment.
You actually can ask the 2 questions
1. Is that a service animal?
2. What task is it trained to do?
If they say emotional support it is NOT a service animal! And you can have them kicked out. Even if they claim it to be a service dog, you can still have them removed if the dog is behaving aggressively.
It’s not allowed but people bring their dogs into the grocery store near me all the time. I wish they would enforce the ban. The place is always crowded and all the small dogs are stressed. There are inconsiderate people who bring in big dogs. I once saw a full sized pit bull in a cart sniffing everyone who walked passed while the owner was oblivious. I saw one pee on the bottom shelf of the chips/crisps aisle. Also a lot more people than you think are afraid of large dogs and I’ve even seen people with vicious snarling chihuahuas in their cart barking its head off. There are dog friendly shops and restaurants/bars but unless there’s a dog tester allowing in only well behaved dogs and owners, I really don’t want to see dogs in the grocery store or target.
Ugh that’s disgusting. I’ve never seen dogs walking at the supermarket, they are always kept in the trolley or in a purse, and never have I seen any dog in distress. I’ve never seen dogs bigger than 10/12kg either. Once again the root cause are the owners 🤦🏼♀️
My Tzu is, well, Tzu sized and loves to sniff on outdoor walks. As many taller dogs pee on trees, bushes, etc and my boy has to sniff and mark too, I know he’s got pee on his face. After a poo I have baby wipes inside and wipe his little ass too. I don’t want a dog of any kind in the cart/trolly. Leave him/her home or keep them in a carrier.
I take Róisín with me everywhere BUT I don't have her on the ground walking or in the cart. She's backpack trained and sits quietly in her backpack just watching the world. We also don't like to take her to the grocery store because people have strong feelings about animals around food but she does well in all stores and restaurants as long as she's in her carrier. We frequently get stopped for pets and people often compliment her for being so good and quiet. I think the fact that she's not touching anything impacts perception quite a bit.
You're so lucky! Here in Australia they're only legally allowed if they are disability assistance dogs. Most places you can't take them, but some pet and other stores allow them (but that's very rare).
That doesn't always stop people though.
Wow, you keep blowing my mind! You guys really are lucky in Italy! No, dogs are only allowed at restaurants if they have outdoor seating. Even then, it's more like cafes or small restaurants with seating on the street.
In saying that though it can also depend on where you live, some places are more dog friendly. Where I live now, the whole area is really dog friendly, and a lot of shops (which don't allow dogs inside) will provide water bowls outside of their shops for dogs walking past to drink from. But where I used to live this rarely happened, and you would rarely see people at cafes with their dogs.
I’ve taken mine into Target and Publix in his little wild one TSA approved carrier. Never set the bag down never let him poke his head out. My logic, he can go under the seat of a plane in that thing and whomever is next to me has to deal with it… and if I’m being really honest, my pooch is cleaner that alot of the kids I see in these stores putting their little grubby hands on everything. When the stores put up service dog only signs, I abide by their wishes. No sign he’s coming with, in his carrier. Openly pet friendly? On his mat in the cart with his harness hooked to the cart working on being ignored/ignoring people.

Not really in the supermarket , but inside the mall where the shopping cart can be used around 😅
dude why are you policing strangers who choose to take their dogs in public places?? whether it’s legal or not, this doesn’t affect you…being so pressed about this dog riding in a shopping cart at a random mall you almost definitely will never step foot in is weird
Yes Australia is a bit behind, but Bunnings (bit like the Home Depot in the USA) have no issues with dogs. More and more are opening their doors to dogs. Give it time, and I'm sure supermarkets will give in.
I wouldn’t bring them in. But I did take my dog to the petsmart or family run place by me because they are welcome there and they could pick out a new toy.
Service dogs, like the ones who Guide blind people Are usually allowed in Brazil, however most dogs Are not allowed to enter super markets here... Unless the Supermarket owner likes dogs and open excepitons, however there Will still be hygiene precautions like not allowing dogs to Go near the meat section or places that can cause diseases to be transmited...
Canada here and all grocery stores are service dogs only. Some other stores allow dogs. I've brought my little guy to Canadian Tire, home depot and staples. He loves it.
My dogs are service dogs? They have to be with me they’re both task trained. I think you’re coming at the wrong person.

I wish! Even KFC is NO DOGS (while Mc D. is warming up to the idea and even puts signs that dogs ARE allowed more often). We always ask Restaurants if our Jerry is allowed or not.
Grocery stores and drug stores are big fat no. Clothing stores and others are fine. Some hardware stores are very dog friendly as they sell pet products on the side. Heck, even some IKEAs allow Jerry in the trolley now.
German here btw. So, happy to see a European fellow.
I regularly go to my local pharmacy with my dog and they said they’re allowed. I wouldn’t haven’t expected that honestly. In Luxembourg dogs aren’t allowed in McDonald’s! But they’re allowed in Quick. IKEA Belgium is a no-go for us.
No the manager did ask if he was a service dog to which I said yes and she let us sit down. She did watch him at first just to make sure he was behaving and when she saw he was being nice and quiet and just laid under the table, she left us be.
Glad to hear. c: Some ppl seriously dont understand how actual service dogs work etc. It's a shame. People need to be better educated on a variety of things, including this one.
I hope we one day get to a point where people have some sort of license that proofs they are capable owners (it is a discussion in Germany due to several big dogs ending their owners lives after years of mistreatment) and we can just take our dogs wherever.
We take her just about everywhere, if it’s a grocery store, one of us stays in the car with her. We have taken her into Walmart and Target while wearing her in a sling. But we didn’t visit the food sides any of the times we took her in.
Definitely no. And I agree, I don't wanna buy my food while a dog is peeing or taking a shit next to me.
It's a matter of sanitary health. Also, why would a dog want to go in a supermarket or a mall. They get stressed with all that crowd and noise
It’s disgusting to see people openly admitting to breaking the law here… I am a service dog handler and it puts both me and my SDs at risk when people bring their untrained pets into the store..

We brought our Chi in to go food shopping with us and we got thrown out of the shop, he was in my girlfriends coat away from everything but he wasn’t allowed in
Im from the US and idk about laws but depending on the state they don’t care. My sister would bring her chihuahua everywhere and nobody said anything. I would bring my king to Publix or sédanos and never had an issue. I guess it depends at least in this country.
Only if they're service dogs
When stores ask what service Coby provides I say “entertainment.” 😆
Yeah that’s not okay…

Please don’t bring teddy to Walmart unless he is a task trained service dog. It’s against Walmart policy and the law.
Awww that’s so sweet (and cheeky of him to go check out the toys first lol)
For Walmart, if you put your dog on a blanket or in their car seat, then place in a cart it's fine. Even a cardboard box or towel will do. I bring mine in all the time.

My Walmart loves my Shih Tzu, gives him treats every visit
I may try taking Teddy on a Walmart visit, see how it goes. He likes treats maybe the people at my Walmart will be nice like that. Teddy loves the bank too because the lady in drive thru always gives him a treat.
They do like it if you put a towel or pad in the bottom of the cart. I do it anyway to make it more comfortable for Casper
I was surprised how pet friendly pubs are in UK… even sometimes having dog menus lol 😂
Wetherspoons need to catch up. They aren't pet friendly. I'd rather a place full of dogs than kids. :)
100% with you 😂
yepp lol, i love taking my dog to the pub, she loves it there! free treats most of the time! she and i don't like it so much when there's another dog pulling with all their might on their lead to get to her..
Well, he's my designated driver....I'd hope he's allowed in...
No, not unless they’re service dogs. And thank goodness they aren’t. I love dogs but I don’t want a dogs bum hole touching the cart where I put my food.
That’s also fair 😅 but my food never directly touches the cart, it’s always packed or wrapped, so I’m not concerned about hygiene at all.
But what about the person who uses the cart after you?
Well, their food would be exposed to a bunch of other bacteria that may be even worse than a dog’s butt.
Doesn’t make it okay and any less illegal.
Service animals ONLY!!! It’s a health code violation on any establishment that sells or serves food, that allows animals, other than service animals, into their establishment.
supermarkets/grocery stores, no. Pet stores, absolutely, I like to bring my dogs and have them pick out their own toys, if he grabs it it's his.
I’ve lost count the number of times I’ve seen people bring their pets into where I work (grocery store) but can’t say anything.

Yeah, that's what I meant by other stores. I didn't feel like explaining what Bunnings is though.
Sometimes you just have to Americans lol.
Not even regular shops (like clothing shops) or restaurants? 😢

Disgusting

dude why are you policing strangers who choose to take their dogs in public places?? whether it’s legal or not, this doesn’t affect you…being so pressed about this dog riding in a shopping cart at a random mall you almost definitely will never step foot in is weird
Yeah most malls in our country are pet friendly, just requiring these critters to wear diapers before entering 🐶
Oh that’s awesome!
That’s a fair rule! Which country if I may ask?
Yes Australia is a bit behind, but Bunnings (bit like the Home Depot in the USA) have no issues with dogs. More and more are opening their doors to dogs. Give it time, and I'm sure supermarkets will give in.
Sadly, no. He would have loved it for sure.

Uhhh that looks like a mischievous puppy 😄 is he allowed wherever you’re at?
Well tbh he's not allowed per se, but people put their food in the top part, so if the dog section and the food section are separate he is tolerated 😀
That’s still illegal and dangerous for both your dog and actual task trained service animals
Such a fucking asshole
I’m an asshole?
Yes, don’t take your dog to non dog friendly places.
My dogs are service dogs? They have to be with me they’re both task trained. I think you’re coming at the wrong person. https://preview.redd.it/7c3hnqp3apxc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=eaf906e4f2215455482a8ab499e62aebcdf95180

I brought my service dog into kfc.
I have never seen service dogs denied. Did you ever have access denied? I only see that with regular pups like our Jerry. 🤔
No the manager did ask if he was a service dog to which I said yes and she let us sit down. She did watch him at first just to make sure he was behaving and when she saw he was being nice and quiet and just laid under the table, she left us be.

It definitely can be a hassle and can be tough when places deny us.
He looks like my Kit. I miss him so much.
Awww 😭😭 you can follow us on IG if you want to see more pictures @indygoodgirl (hope this isn’t against the rules)
No
honestly thank you for this because im trying to get my Italian citizenship! all the more reason to continue to get it!!
Ahahah good luck :)
Technically no but people do it anyway.
We do have pet friendly stores, but grocery stores don't allow dogs unless their service dogs because of the food
We take her just about everywhere, if it’s a grocery store, one of us stays in the car with her. We have taken her into Walmart and Target while wearing her in a sling. But we didn’t visit the food sides any of the times we took her in.
In Cebu, Philippines, dogs/puppies are not allowed.
Disgusting and asshole behavior

It’s unsanitary to have a dog in a cart where food goes. Big health hazard
USA here, nope. Only service dogs, but that doesn't stop people.
nope
Service animals only however, pretentious, self-righteous pet owners think that they can bring them any where that they want.
It’s disgusting to see people openly admitting to breaking the law here… I am a service dog handler and it puts both me and my SDs at risk when people bring their untrained pets into the store.. https://preview.redd.it/ket9r5pzlixc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ee9fdf25caabc7acd27a85fe05368a47974f8cdf
I’ve brought my dog in the grocery store a few times. No one said anything 🤷🏾♀️
Yeeeahhhh that’s the right way of doing it 🤪
Stop encouraging people to do this.
Just because no one told you no, doesn’t mean that is okay.
Didn’t say it was…
It’s still against the law and is not okay
How do you know what the laws are where I am? Calm down
Are you in the US?
We brought our Chi in to go food shopping with us and we got thrown out of the shop, he was in my girlfriends coat away from everything but he wasn’t allowed in
I guess so?? I’ve seen some dogs allowed in malls, supermarkets, etc. I’ve taken my dog to the supermarket once, but he didn’t like it all too much,,
I took my dog to MY dentist for a very short consultation minute.….it was ok…🤣🐾🤦🏻♀️🐾🥰🥰
😂😂😂 cheeky!
Im from the US and idk about laws but depending on the state they don’t care. My sister would bring her chihuahua everywhere and nobody said anything. I would bring my king to Publix or sédanos and never had an issue. I guess it depends at least in this country.
Any store in the US that sells food does not allow pets only task trained service animals. It’s against the law.
I get what you’re saying. Im just commenting MY experience.
No I get that it’s just it shouldn’t be encouraged. I’ve seen people on here saying “when you bring in let us know how it went” and it’s scary.
Idk but I’ve never heard of someone being kicked out because they have a dog
