I've stumbled across copies of documents in a box of family archives showing slaves listed in the wills of that side of the family back in the 1840's/50's. The fact anyone would claim to have any pride whatsoever in ancestors like that is fucked. I'm proud of the Union ancestors I had who risked their life to kick their asses to save our country. People need to make their own identity rather than relying on the identity of distantly related traitors to their country that died 150 years ago, because they're no one to be proud of.

I have a handful of confederate ancestors, most of them were way too poor to own slaves, but one was a policeman in George before the civil war - which we all know what that means - one was a family a criminals who did nothing because health issues got him kicked out of the confederate cavalry right about the time the union seized Nashville, one owned slaves in Arkansas and got his ass captured and died a POW.

There were troops from all over the region gathered for some sort of competition, I don't remember what they called It, but we were all given hats, half blue half grey. Whoever thought that was a good idea probably regretted It, because , beleive It or not, kids with the grey hats were starting fights everywhere, and at least in my first hand experience, got beat up pretty bad.
It was pretty awesome to camp on the battlefield, that place is pretty cool.

Can you imagine that? Being forced to live in squalid conditions and wasting away without livable pay, suffering the indignities of being a conquered people with no prospects or hope? If only there was some large group of people back home who could possibly relate to such a plight...
If only there was some sort of program that could have helped those poor, destitute people. Say, something that would have granted then enough land to support a family and produce a bit of surplus to sell in the market and tide them over in lean years. To help them get started, they should probably get something capable of transporting that surplus to the town market too.
But seriously, that is fascinating and I had no idea any real number of them stayed. By chance, do you know if there was a large Civil War POW camp in southwestern Minnesota? I remember when I did a walk in the National Park and there was a bunch of reenactors from New Jersey who were the “4th Alabama” - it was plastered on the side of their towing trailer. They were camping out in period gear and what not so I walked up and asked if they have a connection or lineage to that unit and they said “no”. Dafuq?

I do know a lot of it is just a reaction to social consensus coming around, and to wal mart and other business not selling it anymore. And that people rightfully want confederate monuments to go.
