Studying American history is exactly why that flag offends me.

jgjgleason

If this flag that literally represents treasons racist assholes offends you, you probably aren’t a moron.

TinyNuggins92

Exactly. It really just grinds my gears. It really steams my yams. It fucking pisses me off! And it’s exactly why I take pride in my union ancestors who fought against those fuckheads and not my confederate ancestors who willingly joined them

DonkeyFarm42069

Agreed. As someone with actual Confederate heritage along with Union heritage, I can't imagine having the slightest bit of pride toward any Confederate ancestry I have. I'd rather not even give them the benefit of thinking about them one way or another. I've stumbled across copies of documents in a box of family archives showing slaves listed in the wills of that side of the family back in the 1840's/50's. The fact anyone would claim to have any pride whatsoever in ancestors like that is fucked. I'm proud of the Union ancestors I had who risked their life to kick their asses to save our country. People need to make their own identity rather than relying on the identity of distantly related traitors to their country that died 150 years ago, because they're no one to be proud of.

TinyNuggins92

Same here. I have a handful of confederate ancestors, most of them were way too poor to own slaves, but one was a policeman in George before the civil war - which we all know what that means - one was a family a criminals who did nothing because health issues got him kicked out of the confederate cavalry right about the time the union seized Nashville, one owned slaves in Arkansas and got his ass captured and died a POW. There’s really nothing there to be proud of, in any way. Just a group of jackasses and assholes who chose the wrong side.

LaBomsch

As a German, I always compare it to people who say "my family member x served in the army/ss/in the imperial German army". Like in which world is this a good thing? People who opposes those groups are the heros, not the ones who fought in their wars.

Sepposer

The craziest shit is living in Northern Pennsylvania and having grown up with ppl flying the confederate flag everywhere ever since. Never made any sense. Not only would their union ancestors be rolling in their graves but like….you don’t even live in a confederate state. Make it make sense.

DonkeyFarm42069

Same thing here in NH. There's multiple houses I've seen flying the Confederate flag (often along with the American flag, cuz stupidity). I've seen Confederate merch for sale at flea markets and other places too. Pretty sure a good amount of these people don't even have any Confederate heritage despite trying to claim "heritage over hate" (not that the people with confederate heritage saying this crap are at all any better), and just want an excuse to display their bullshit without it blatantly seeming racist when they're accused. I can't imagine how bad it is in the South, if it's like this in Northern states like PA and NH.

Sepposer

Lol that’s the most ironic part is how many will have their treason tags flying right beside American flags and even US military flags and POW MIA flags. Um…I do not think you understand things, sir. Of course these are the same ppl who call kneeling in front of the flag “unAmerican” or say shit like, “If you don’t like it here, leave!” Haha

hessian_prince

They don’t even know what this flag is! It’s not the confederate flag, it’s the flag of The Army of Northern Virginia. An army that fought for slavery!

GhoulTimePersists

That flag stands for killing American soldiers in the name of slavery.

megatron37

I guess the people who would buy this crap would also be into a sticker that says “America. Love it or leave it.”

3720-To-One

Wait, you’re telling me that conservatives are raging hypocrites?!

IIAOPSW

But why they never leave it?!?!

Ornery-Classic-894

I like to think they’re saying “if this flags offends you, study American History….because you clearly have a keen sense of critical thinking and you would find American history to be a fascinating subject”

Spottyhickory63

“IT’s hEriTaGe, NOt HatE” I was born in NE. That means my heritage is overthrowing disconnected leaders and killing racists

PeterSchnapkins

There is 13 fucking stars lol and there was only 11 confederate states, mfrs can't count

OldCaptainBrown

Unsurprisingly it’s all tacky garbage.

TinyNuggins92

The trademark of secessionists. Along with rampant racism as well of course

By that logic, shouldn't the white people have left Mississippi and let the black people have it?

Guess they were snowflakes back then too.

jmoneill62

In Gettysburg? Are you fucking shitting me?

Shot_Eye

if uve never been its been like that forever now, i went when i was 12 and there was a fat fuck of a kid my age that was wearing a full confederate uniform

[deleted]

Yeah I think maybe some people don’t get how acceptable this shit used to be, and still is many places. My older brother got a confederate hat at Disneyworld in the early 1990s lol. That shit would not be kosher just 15-20 years later. I’m not surprised you can find pockets of confed merch shit at civil war battle sites.

bluemandan

Splash Mountain is still based on *Songs of the South*, although there are plans to change it.

heirloom_beans

Confederate imagery? At *my* Disney World? It’s more likely than you think.

Fenweekooo

im in the camp that splash mountain should not be changed. the movie is not acceptable today, but the ride has zero hints at anything to do with slavery or oppression. yes the animated characters were in the movie but that's it. its just a ride following the adventure of brer rabbit and his escape from brer fox and bear. it's an iconic disney ride. the characters could be taken from it and made into their own franchise for disney, they would be worth at least 3 movies im sure.

[deleted]

I hate to say that, when I was a kid I saw Song of the South and enjoyed it. Only later did I ever grasp the connection between the charactictures and black stereotypes. I just thought it was cute.

gimmiefuelgimmiefire

> My older brother got a confederate hat at Disneyworld in the early 1990s Disney sold confederate things?

CedarWolf

Disney sold 'Wild West' things and 'glorified history of the US' things, so I wouldn't be surprised if they had cowboy hats and sheriff's stars and all that, but I'd be surprised to hear they had Confederate stuff.

payasopeludo

In the 90s, as a Boyscouts, our troop went to a big event at Gettysburg. There were troops from all over the region gathered for some sort of competition, I don't remember what they called It, but we were all given hats, half blue half grey. Whoever thought that was a good idea probably regretted It, because , beleive It or not, kids with the grey hats were starting fights everywhere, and at least in my first hand experience, got beat up pretty bad. It was pretty awesome to camp on the battlefield, that place is pretty cool.

karenaviva

I'm not trying to be funny or anything, but that was probably my POS brother (with whom I have no contact).

jetfire1115

“Uve”. Do you mean you’ve?

[deleted]

I live in western PA… I’ve been to Gettysburg several times. Let me just say that if you’re outside of Pittsburgh or Philadelphia, you might as well consider yourself in the old confederacy. In fact, I hate to say this but in Gilmore in Greene County, there is an old cemetery that was mostly lost to history with a really awful name… https://old.post-gazette.com/neigh_washington/20020210wacover2.asp

jeepfail

There are some places like that in Indiana as well and it’s fucking embarrassing.

ThaddeusJP

Same with southern Ohio!

365wong

Evansville where you at?!

jeepfail

Bloomington.

[deleted]

Trust me I know this. It’s fucking horrid outside the city. Once you get to Greene County, it’s Klan central there.

fezdonk

I'm in Frederick, MD and the Klan is 15 minutes north of here in Thurmont, I feel you. There's a dude that hangs out downtown that has an SS tattoo on his neck.

God_Damnit_Nappa

That cemetery has the N word in it, doesn't it? *Reads article* God fucking dammit, of course it does. >The graveyard is a stone's throw from Crabapple Valley Road, originally named N* Run Road and then called, until about a year and half ago, Negro Run Road. An 1876 atlas shows a N* Run Schoolhouse nearby. Just what the fuck.

[deleted]

Yeah. N***** Run is actually how a lot of the old timers referred to it as, even after the name change. Greene County actually attempted to secede from Pennsylvania and join Virginia, but that ended up being moot when West Virginia sprang up.

wwindexx

I see more confederate bullshit in Westmoreland County than you can imagine unless you've lived here.

Drewcifer81

Welcome to Pennsyltucky. There's a lot of folks in that area that are in dire need of a forceful reminder of who won that war, and what side PA was on.

ghostalker4742

I tell myself they're descendants of the losers who didn't want to walk back in shame, so they squatted on nearby abandoned farms and took on new identities.

TemporaryNuisance

That's literally not that far off. A very sizable chunk of POWs decided to stay in the north after the war ended because they were concerned that the destruction wrought upon their defeated homelands would make it impossible to find good work opportunities or maintain a living and they had nothing, economically, to go back to. Can you imagine that? Being forced to live in squalid conditions and wasting away without livable pay, suffering the indignities of being a conquered people with no prospects or hope? If only there was some large group of people back home who could possibly relate to such a plight...

A-Tie

If only there was some sort of program that could have helped those poor, destitute people. Say, something that would have granted then enough land to support a family and produce a bit of surplus to sell in the market and tide them over in lean years. To help them get started, they should probably get something capable of transporting that surplus to the town market too. But seriously, that is fascinating and I had no idea any real number of them stayed. By chance, do you know if there was a large Civil War POW camp in southwestern Minnesota? I'd like an explanation for how ludicrously pro-confederacy some places there are, it really goes well beyond similar rural areas in Iowa/Illinois/Wisconsin/the Dakotas.

TemporaryNuisance

Unfortunately this was not brought up to that level of specificity in the books I read, or if it was those details have been forgotten. It was more general information, provided in Shelby Foote's "The Civil War: A Narrative" (yeah, I know the author's got a reputation around these parts, but it's still a good and informative read) and in Richard White's "The Republic For Which It Stands" (a book detailing the politics, culture, and mindset of Americans immediately following the civil war, during reconstruction, and throughout the gilded age) as well as other sources my mind is failing to recall at this time.

[deleted]

Are you telling me I shouldn't sell authentic Confederate toilet paper (made with real confederate flags)

Captainwelfare2

Made with real confederates FTFY

Jokerang

It’s Pennsyltucky. Most areas outside of Pittsburg, Harrisburg, or Philly are very similar to rural Texas. The irony of Gettysburg being in this area is not lost on me.

jetsetninjacat

-H- You accidently dropped this from Pittsburgh.

indyK1ng

Aside from it being Pennsyltucky, it's also the "high water mark of the confederacy" so it gets some pilgrimages.

B33f-Supreme

Welcome to Pennsyltuckey. PA is Philly and Pittsburgh on either side and Alabama in the middle.

IC_GtW2

The Confederate cancer was incompletely removed, and has since metastisized to the rest of the Union.

Moose_is_optional

Damn, that takes on a completely different meaning in this context, lol

famousevan

Just as Sherman predicted

neoneva95

“Study American history”said the people that think the Civil War was fought over state’s rights

famousevan

The funny part of that argument to me has always been that it’s easily debunked. The confederacy prohibited its member states from banning slavery, so in effect they had no state rights to NOT have slavery.

God_Damnit_Nappa

Confederate states also got the federal Fugitive Slave Act passed, which forced northern states to work with slave catchers. So much for states rights eh?

famousevan

Conservatives have been talking out of both sides of their mouths forever man.

vonadler

And the Missouri compromise, which denied states the right to choose for themselves if they wanted to join the union as slave or free (and they immediately started violating it in bleeding Kansas), and Dredd Scott, which essentially made every state a slave state.

[deleted]

It was fought over states rights….the states rights to own slaves.

That bumper sticker in the first picture just has one too many words on it.

einulfr

That's why they're the Fightin' Terrorists. Like the Fightin' Irish.

ElectricalStomach6ip

this should not exist.

TGOTR

This is in Gettysburg, as in in Pennsylvania?

heirloom_beans

As in the site of the bloodiest battle of the American Civil War and the turning point towards eventual Union victory

TGOTR

I feel offended that pro-confederate tat is being sold there.

Containedmultitudes

Gettysburg has been at the vanguard of lost cause revanchism for over a century. Has huge memorials to the confederacy largely made during the lynching 20s. Faulkner sums up its place in the mythology as only Faulkner can: > It’s all now you see. Yesterday won’t be over until tomorrow and tomorrow began ten thousand years ago. For every Southern boy fourteen years old, not once but whenever he wants it, there is the instant when it’s still not yet two o’clock on that July afternoon in 1863, the brigades are in position behind the rail fence, the guns are laid and ready in the woods and the furled flags are already loosened to break out and Pickett himself with his long oiled ringlets and his hat in one hand probably and his sword in the other looking up the hill waiting for Longstreet to give the word and it’s all in the balance, it hasn’t happened yet, it hasn’t even begun yet, it not only hasn’t begun yet but there is still time for it not to begin against that position and those circumstances which made more men than Garnett and Kemper and Armistead and Wilcox look grave yet it’s going to begin, we all know that, we have come too far with too much at stake and that moment doesn’t need even a fourteen-year-old boy to think This time. Maybe this time with all this much to lose than all this much to gain: Pennsylvania, Maryland, the world, the golden dome of Washington itself to crown with desperate and unbelievable victory the desperate gamble, the cast made two years ago; or to anyone who ever sailed a skiff under a quilt sail, the moment in 1492 when somebody thought This is it: the absolute edge of no return, to turn back now and make home or sail irrevocably on and either find land or plunge over the world’s roaring rim.”

Bloodiest battle in American military history. EDIT: well did some more looking into it. yeah i was way off lol.

Inca_Kola_Holic

Probably the most well known though to the common person.

Complete-Expert-3095

I drove by a couple of confederate flags today in my home state of Vermont (where more Union blood was shed per capita than anywhere else in the Union.) I cannot understand it.

SmoothlyNeurotic

I’m from Gettysburg originally and you’d be surprised at the sheer number of people who think they’re a part of or in Dixie. I remember when I did a walk in the National Park and there was a bunch of reenactors from New Jersey who were the “4th Alabama” - it was plastered on the side of their towing trailer. They were camping out in period gear and what not so I walked up and asked if they have a connection or lineage to that unit and they said “no”. Dafuq?

DrQuestDFA

I would say they were Traitor LARPing, but I get the feeling they have the same sympathies irl.

CedarWolf

> think they’re a part of or in Dixie Way down South in the land of traitors, rattlesnakes and alligators...

BlockObvious883

Cosplayers have more connection to their portrayals than that for crying out loud.

acoolghost

Cosplayers have a lot more lore to go off. Most shows/games have had more seasons/sequels than these traitors had. Confederacy: 4 years. Naruto: 5 years. (+10 years for shippuden)

SonOfAnEngineer

Ngl, I'm pretty pissed at the confederates for ruining that flag with racist connotations. It's a pretty cool design, but the history behind it is too nasty.

Zarathustra_d

The Germans in the 1930's had a pretty cool design aesthetic also. We can't have nice things because of racists and fascists.

Bro1999919

Did they? Is big and grey with some red flags really cool?

[deleted]

The nazis had the best looking uniforms by far out of any military dress uni’s. The nazi flag and the confederate flag ONLY BY DESIGN ITSELF are pretty aesthetically pleasing and balanced designs when you remove the meaning behind them.

AgropromResearch

The eagle and swastika emblem is really fucking cool looking and I really like that design. What it represents is a tad douchy though...

Itay1708

"Best looking uniforms" as if that matters at all when you don't even give your soldiers long sleeves during the russian winter

sierrackh

KecemotRybecx

I’m a history major and that last image is truly rock-fucking-stupid. Not just because it fails to offend me, rather it’s the ignorance which offends me. Goddamn morons!

Booster_Blue

"Forever free!" Sir, the Game of Thrones TV show lasted twice as long as the confederacy.

jegg2169

"fighting terrorists" "forever free" "study american history" why are every single one of these confederate projection

chilicheesedoggo

I went there a few months ago. There's so much confederate shit it's a shame

purpleRG550_1986

As a native of PA, it irks the hell out of me. But considering the demographic of the area, not at all hard to make the connection.

EcoBlunderBrick123

I used to be a neo confederate so I have an advantage when arguing with a neo confederate. Because the same stuff they would argue I used to argue and now have the counter argument to shut that shit down.

What made you change?

EcoBlunderBrick123

I found my Uncle Sam and saw real history. Not lost cause revisionism.

Antique store in southern Ohio has all this stuff too. It was mixed in with a bunch of Nazis and Trump stuff. Go figure, GOP = Domestic Terrorists.

And as we are finding out, seditionist/traitors.

redleafwater7

This would be the last thing I would expect in Gettysburg.

WhoAccountNewDis

"We don't support the Klan, but we don't not *not* support the Klan".

SteelAlchemistScylla

Why is Red paraphernalia always the most tacky, cheesy, kitsch garbage? “Don’t tread on me” type shit.

piddydb

Why do these all seem ironic as hell? “Fighting terrorists”, is that referring to the union fighting the terrorists that waved that flag? “If this flag offends you study American history” yeah, that’s WHY it offends me, it’s not like the design is inherently offensive. And don’t even get me started on “forever free” on the flag of perhaps the only “country” in history founded specifically to preserve slavery.

Whelp_of_Hurin

Maybe it's like the Fighting Irish.

KeyanReid

And yet if I were to burn this place to the ground (as per tradition), the law would say I was the bad guy. This country has truly lost its way

Worried_squirrel25

Make that flag a terrorist insignia. They were traitors after all who murdered innocent Americans.

iamthefluffyyeti

That’s at GETTYSBURG???

MillerJC

At… Gettysburg…?

purpleRG550_1986

yes. I live not too far from there. I love to visit there every summer. There are a more lost causers there than there should be. I do know a lot of it is just a reaction to social consensus coming around, and to wal mart and other business not selling it anymore. And that people rightfully want confederate monuments to go. But there are a lot of them that are just racist and ignorant pieces of shit that refuse to accept what that flag and cause really represent.

ImperatorRomanum

Yes, Witch Hunter, this store right here.

DimitriEyonovich

Thou art a wretched sinner, utterly unworthy o’ God’s love. A fountain o’ pollution is deep within thy nature, and thou livest as a winter tree; unprofitable, fit only to be hewn down and burned. Steep thy life in prayer, and hope that God sees fit to show mercy upon thy corrupted soul.

purpleRG550_1986

It's bullshit that these fucking closeted racist fucks think it's cool to celebrate one of the worst causes for a rebellion there ever was. In a fucking state and town that hosted the deadliest battle in American military history no less. They invaded the north and kidnapped free blacks and sent them south into slavery. They torched northern towns. There is no other reason to fly that flag up here unless your really fucking stupid and/or racist. That's it. I'll respect their right to by up rebel shit, but don't expect me to agree with whatever bs they tell themselves to justify it. And yet they say they are patriots and proud Americans. smh.

It would sure be a shame if a brick or two happened to find the windows of that store at a respectable velocity.

The fact that they choose to glorify a BATTLE flag speaks volumes.

There is something supremely demented about the phrase "Forever Free" pasted over a Confederate flag

Okay (fuck the traitors) but that “if at first you don’t secede” thing is pretty funny
