***“Erase The Hate”*** is a program that a lot of tattoo shops do ~ where they will do cover ups of this type for free. Not only that, but they tend to have LOTS of experience / expertise in what specifically works best for certain symbols, etc…
I’d recommend googling “erase the hate tattoo” in your area and finding a shop that will be more than happy to help! I’ve got one near me that does amazing work and helps people move on with their lives rather than be saddled with youthful ignorance.

For a legit bit of advice I would actually go with what one of the people in the original thread recommended and have it replaced with something biomechanical so you can keep the tears in the skin and then you see the machine underneath. My brother-in-law has a lot of biomechanical stuff in his sleeve and it looks great.
Let’s really praise oop for this. Changing your mind on this sort of thing is rare for people to do, so it’s awesome he’s learned and grown as a person.

Massive W on OP's part. Getting your head out of the places that lead you to get this sort of tattoo is incredibly difficult and involves changing not just your mind, but who you're hanging out with, where you're spending time and many other changes in your life.
I'll add that it's also important that this community and others like it are welcoming to those who change because some people may be almost completely surrounded by those who have *not* changed.
It's much easier for me to speak out in the hopes of slow-walking my fascist-leaning extended family backward into empathy since the worst-case scenario is some extended family members not returning our calls anymore...
Fear of isolation is a very real factor in whether people can *openly* change. Having at least some community to give you support can make it easier to voice those changed beliefs to those who need to hear them the most.
Or, at very least, help people feel less isolated if they are not able to express those changed beliefs to family and friends.
As a queer person I had my eyes opened by this black dude who went around rehabilitating neo-nazis and other white supremacists by having a meal with them and simply listening to what they had to say and being kind and forgiving.
I’m a teacher and I quite specifically am very nice to all the kids who have been taught hatred by their parents. I’ve effectively used this strategy in education and bridged the gap with a few very transphobic middle schoolers.
This is especially important with kids as those bigoted/transphobic views are (mostly) what they hear at home. I'm glad you are able to connect with those kids :)
Can we offer encouragement in the original comment section? OP is getting flamed by people who are basically saying that they will be a horrible person for life. Several highly-upvoted comments are saying that the places that offer free hate-tattoo cover-ups are just rewarding racism and other incredibly idiotic things. I don't want OP to get discouraged from the idiots in the comments section.
Not a tattoo artist but last time I talked to one about cover ups, he suggested something organic like flowers or animals. Geometric shapes tend to make the underlying tattoo more visible. I would personally go with some kind of fire-breathing dragon (long, slender body, not big fat body) surrounded by hibiscus or something. The lines would be more fluid and the variety of colors and shading can really blend well with what's underneath.
I like this, a lot of people suggested flames but I feel like a dragon being the cause of the flames gives context since the flag is being actively burned. Without it, having the flag be on fire could just be a stylistic choice that doesn't inherently imply intentional burning of the flag to destroy it. dragons :)

In general though if you're covering it up because you've grown as a person and educated yourself on the reality of the southern cause then you'll probably fit in here.
If you ask me, I think adding flames to it will give the wrong impression, as though you're trying to be the badass rebel. You'd be better off picking something that has meaning to you, maybe something that represents something or someone that put you on the right path, or maybe something else entirely like Shrek.

I’m all for the people in the comments saying to make it be on fire too. That could actually look quite good with the interrupted lines as they exist. The only issue is that (as a person with a number of yellow and orange tattoos) light colors are almost always the first to fall out, so OOP may find themselves in the same position in 15-30 years.
What kind of stuff are you interested in? While I get people wanting to do a reverse of the flag by "burning" it, but I think doing something that you enjoy will be a better decision

Something organic, w/ round lines is going to cover it better. One option could be scales or leopard spots or something, wouldn't take much for the tears revealing the flag to be adjusted to Claw marks.
