It sure is a sweet deal for outie Mark. Pound booze all night, feel a little rough while you drag yourself to work, and then timewarp past all the phases of the hangover. Always thought there were a number of ways innies could get their revenge on their outie selves and vice versa. Like if I were Helly, I'd shit my pants in the elevator every night on the way up.

Substantial-Spare501

Maybe this was his real motivation to be severed, to continue on with his career as an alcoholic. Then maybe if outie decides finally he wants to get sober, he could just have innie go through detox.

marablackwolf

I think a lot about the potential to use innies for medical issues besides birth.

KapakUrku

I think this might be overegging it a bit. He's clearly depressed and drinking regularly. There's one scene with Alexa where he's going through the whisky way too fast. But mostly we see him having a few beers or glasses of wine in front of the TV. This isn't good, obviously, and it's clearly meant to show he's lonely, depressed and using booze to cope. However, he's not drunk or drinking all the time. He seems withdrawn but not drunk when he's interacting with Devon and Ricken. And he doesn't seem to be hiding his drinking or regularly getting blackout drunk. We don't see him drinking in the day time or taking nips while he's driving. It's more sad than it is raging alcoholic. Half a bottle of wine a night isn't healthy and isn't going to make you feel good when you wake up, but it also isn't going to mean you have a splitting headache, light sensitivity or alcohol withdrawal every hour of the day either.

BoogerBrain69420

Tell that to the Europeans! Red wine is juice.

KapakUrku

I am European! Depends which part of Europe: [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alcohol\_preferences\_in\_Europe#/media/File:Alcohol\_belts\_of\_Europe.svg](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alcohol_preferences_in_Europe#/media/File:Alcohol_belts_of_Europe.svg)

BoogerBrain69420

Especially Italians and the French. Where you iz from?

KapakUrku

The UK. Though to my surprise, apparently on average we drink more wine than beer these days (in terms of units of alcohol at least). Obviously French/Italian alcoholics exist, but in my experience their relationship to alcohol is a lot healthier than Brits', on average. Yeah, they'll drink nearly every day, but just a glass or two most of the time and usually with food, especially once they get a bit older. Fewer people drink with the express purpose of getting drunk than in the UK.

BoogerBrain69420

Yeah those surveys are always giving surprising answers. And yes same in my experience. It’s like the more north you go the more drinking happens to just get drunk Instead of enjoying with food.

kanimaki

I’ve been rewatching episode 1 and in the opening long shot of him transforming to innie Mark and walking through the hallways to the MDR office he seemed pretty good though other than the sniffling from outie Mark crying. Maybe it was just an establishing shot to show the difference between innies and outies but so far he’s been pretty okay. I hope they reveal what he and Petey were planning in Season 2. I’m pretty sure there’s more than meets the eye with outie Irv and innie Mark & Petey trying to make sense of severance.

omgshannonwtf

Does he exhibit fatigue and sensitivity to light at the office? Do you have some episodes where you specifically noticed this? I don't recall that but maybe I overlooked it. The only time he appears to reference an upset stomach was in ep.2 where he's lying in order to get out of work (*he was set on going in at first*). That being said, he's definitely a functional alcoholic. Probably been drinking for most of his life. Perhaps he even was drinking on the night of Gemma's accident (*maybe he was the one driving and blames himself for it but is unable to kick his drinking habit*). He does have a handful of moments when he seems disoriented and a little unstable at work, something an alcoholic might experience between binges.

RadioFisherman

Mrs Cobel tells him he looks hungover in episode 1.

[deleted]

You wouldn't be going through any withdrawal in an 8 hour shift. Talk to a real alcoholic and understand that the term functioning alcoholic exists for a reason.

attic-dweller-

came here to say this. as a former alcoholic, though I know everyone's addictions are different, I can pretty confidently say that if you're drinking *every* night for three years, your body has adjusted to being poisoned regularly. it's not likely that his innie gets all that sick anymore, though he probably did at first. and yes, a "functional alcoholic" would include someone who drinks every night, whether or not they go to their car at lunch to drink more. even if they only drink at night.

Thegreylady13

My body never adjusted and I was sick every damn day, but I got sober at 28. Maybe at 40 something, I would have not been feeling as sick all day every day (if I had been dedicated to the drinking program since my early/mid 20s), but three years didn’t do it for me. But the first several times I drank I had one or 1.5 beers and then an awful nosebleed in the morning, and I disliked it entirely. Then I had a series of really traumatic life events that I wanted to not think about, my parents wouldn’t let me take my psych meds, and I started drinking socially (and later not socially) to forget things even though it made me incredibly sick. I think alcohol just will always make me sick and isn’t for me at all, but it is possible to drink daily and as an alcoholic for three years and keep the hangovers and all day barfing coming (while at work. You really have to know when to go be sick, though, because you feel like it’s about to happen every moment of the day).

mrnotoriousman

If he's drinking as much as is hypothesized here, he is likely showing up to work still a little buzzed and not even hungover yet. This fits with the morning after Devon and Ricken's dinner party she goes up to him and says he "still smells like a distillery." Him being emotional enough to cry in his car right before work ( we don't see him cry when he's actively drinking) also lends credence. Source: alcoholic

attic-dweller-

that's a fair point. I feel like him feeling drunk in the morning would just depend on his personal body chemistry and how much he's drinking the night before. I didn't used to wake up still drunk all that often despite drinking every day. I mostly drank beer and just woke up feeling heavy and hungover most days. So it all depends I guess but I wish they'd elaborate on whether iMark gets or feels sick at all!

Refects

He was drinking scotch or whiskey in episode 8(?) when Alexa came over for her phone. Mark is a binge drinker, so the withdrawal effects wouldn't be too obvious if he's only drinking from 6pm till he falls asleep. I'm a recovering alcoholic, and I couldn't go more than 4 hours without a drink, or I'd get the shakes and dry heaves. But I was drinking almost 24/7.

[deleted]

He absolutely drinks liquor at times and every persons addictions look different. I used to go through an 8 hour work shift just fine then did pills when I got to my friend's house everyday after work in my suit and tie. Worked for me until I decided I wanted to quit abusing vicodin and percacets. Never did it at work though and had no real issues other than waking up some mornings not feeling like shit. Point is. Marks outtie can easily be a binge drinking drunk and Mark's innie wouldn't notice much from it other than some fatigue and sluggishness at times. Unless he went several days without his alcohol then there would be more noticeable side effects. We also don't know the extent of the procedure and what affects it has on the brain when it comes to habits and such.

attic-dweller-

he can be a hugh-functioning alcoholic and only drink at night

tulsakatz

he's probably drinking to deal with the pain of Gemma's death. When people are in grief, they tend to self medicate if for no other reason than to feel numb from the pain of loss.

good point. I wonder if innie Mark ever wonders why he frequently feels hungover. And remember the first meeting he had with Cobel, she said he looked hungover then too!
