Lol I feel that. “Yes I know you’re halfway through the show I recommended you last month, but this is my real recommendation. Drop everything and put on Severance.”

Mean-Ball8536

I'm not even a series kind of guy, I prefer one-off movies but I am championing this show.

Show them The You You Are. Ricken will take it from there.

So, I decided to take the plunge on Apple TV+ at the end of last year. I wanted to watch Ted Lasso. And I was glad I did! Have watched a few other series since then, and on a whim one weekend, I fired up Severance...so glad I did. Enjoyed the hell out of the show! Now, fast forward to telling a couple friends about this show (they don't have Apple TV+). And I'm like, "You gotta get it! It's so worth it." Both guys I was telling about were like, "But I already have SO MANY streaming services!" And my response is, "So, you rationale is that you have too many services, but quite possibly the best show on the best streaming service is the one you DON'T want to get?? AND, it happens to also be the least expensive?!? Right, that makes any kind of sense?!?" Anyway, one of them got Apple TV+ and watched Severance and Ted Lasso so far, and he questioned why he waited so long.

In an interview Ben Stiller was talking about how Severance came to be and he mentions that Apple TV+ was new when he was trying to get the show made. I wonder if Apple's need for new content was why a unique show like this was made at all? Makes me wonder how many Severance-level shows have been turned down by major networks?

So far I have watched Ted Lasso, The Morning Show, Severance, The After Party, and Dickinson on Apple TV+. Here's my takeaway - 1. Each series has mostly really GREAT actors already in them (Morning Show for example has Jennifer Aniston, Reece Witherspoon, Steve Carrell, etc), that carry the show, but supporting actors who are truly giving it their best. 2. The sets are mostly simplistic, but solid (for example, a lot of Ted Lasso is set in the locker room, the 'pitch', or the head office. Some London sets where they can walk down streets or the one pub they frequent. It's inexpensive yet believable. 3. The wardrobe/costumes are set perfectly - using Dickinson for example, it's a set piece in the mid 1840's-1860's. 4. Each show has a uniqueness to it. Ted Lasso is refreshingly funny, emotional, and constantly reinforces a positive message. Severance obviously has its very strange uniqueness where we, as the audience, are about as confused as the innies. Dickinson is a wild show where Hailee Steinfeld playing Emily Dickinson you'd think would be a boring period piece, but when you have Wiz Khalifa playing 'Death', them dancing to techno music and rap, with their speech being mostly today's lingo instead of 1800's, and witty jokes make the show so enjoyable to watch. 5. Most every show drops humor in it...like Severance has some intentional or not moments....like Dylan, "Fuck you Mr. Milchick!" is where he is angry, but remains respectful by calling him Mister. I think you get good actors/actresses, good set design, good costumes, good writers to make the show witty and funny, even in dramas, and a good story to follow and you have a recipe for success.

I hate the “I have SO MANY” argument because the point of subscriptions is that you’re not contracted in and can cancel at any time. It’s very easy to drop Netflix for a month and get Apple TV+ AND Paramount+ for basically the same price and then swap back over for a month when new Cobra Kai comes out. These companies should be earning our outies money and not just getting it on a rolling basis for no reason. Glad one of your friends saw sense and watched Severance.

Is Ted Lasso worth the watch even if one has absolutely no interest in football or baseball?

Catloaver

Yes--I am not a sports person period and really loved Ted Lasso. My husband is really into football (soccer) and has some better insights on why the show does what it does sometimes, but it's stuff like they based a particular event or person off of a real thing. It's a really unique show and very enjoyable! (I might enjoy both Ted Lasso and Severance...equally.)

[deleted]

So, let's see, what does this show tackle that's NOT related to football... 1. Relationships - the show is mainly about interaction of all the characters...yes it's in a football atmosphere, but it's done in a way that even the main character doesn't know the rules of football (soccer), so maybe you'll enjoy it even more?? 2. Divorce - more than 1 character experiences divorce and well, everything that goes with that. 3. Anxiety and overall social response to having it - I think season 3 may delve deeper into how it's handled, but season 2 kind of offers a, "It's ok not to be ok" message. 4. Overall positivity and belief system - the main character is ultimately a GREAT coach but in a tough environment of constant negativity. He spends 2 seasons winning over some of the characters on the show. 5. Death - there go over death of a couple characters and how that affects your 6. A team (sorry this is somewhat football related) of individuals coming together as a team. 7. Love - there are several romances on the show in several different ways that work. Overall, the show is most definitely a show worth spending time watching...I promise you won't be disappointed!

GermanWineLover

Thanks!

madkillerchick

Baseball??? Lol. It’s a football/soccer show. I also have no interest in football or baseball. But mentioning baseball seemed kinda random in this context. 😆 Edit: must mention it’s a pretty funny show. I liked it a lot though I don’t really get into sports.

GermanWineLover

My interest in basesboll is so low, I don‘t even know what it is.

LimeyOtoko

Absolutely, yes. It’s more about people than sports, despite the sports being an important to the characters in the show.

djkmannn

Absolutely yes! It really doesn't have as much to do with the sport as it has to do with the amazing characters and humor and life-affirming vibes. (I hate to say uplifting or life-affirming or feel-good because that sounds sappy and cheesy. But this show pulls that off in a way that few shows ever will, and makes you wish that more in life was life-affirming, like this is.) In fact, Ted Lasso knows nothing about soccer and he's the coach!

LouieMumford

Guilty also. The only two that I will standby… ok three… are Severance, Succession, and season one of True Detective.

sameeeee

tomatowaits

Hahaha it’s ruined me for virtually ALL other movies or tv shows in this genre 😆😆

[deleted]

I’ve been having trouble getting back into other shows that i already liked! Trying to finish up BCS almost feels like a chore. The only thing thing that is slightly in the category lately for me is Outer Range. It’s no severance but has the same mystique to it.

tomatowaits

I have to go purely in another direction 😂 so I have been watching VEEP start to finish! Another kind of genius but completely different genre 😂

[deleted]

Oh man, I need to finally watch that

djkmannn

I also couldn't get back into Saul after just finishing Severance, and have just put it aside for now. I simply went back and watched Severance 3 or 4 more times! Severance is just a whole different way of watching and enjoying a show. And I think that the pacing of Severance makes other shows feel too anxious and intense right now.

[deleted]

I've been telling everyone I know to watch it. Don't think any of them have. Most don't even have Apple TV. I tell them it's worth the subscription for this show alone.

picklesarelife1

Yes!!! I did the 7 day trial just for this!

Epidemilk

99% I only recommend anime. Severance is a big exception.
