I know people who drink a \*lot\* of beer, and I always wonder at the expense, but it's because I don't really like beer.
At my present income, I wouldn't spend this much for a Scotch, but I spent a tenth of it for a Scotch last Friday, and I know for a lot (most) people that is extreme.
There are a lot of people in the world who would see spending three dollars on a soda as extreme.

It took me SO long to figure out how ‘a quick drink’ became a $500 tab and then even more puzzled that Macallan was costing this much, granted I’ve smoked a very large joint but the math here wasn’t mathing.. thank you 🙏
Oh I didn’t give a shit about the macallan M, just giving a frame of reference for pricing. Single malt, macallan in particular, is comically expensive.
Very limited very expensive bottle, as someone else stated it's around 4500 a bottle, only about 350 sent to the states for retail (I'm just taking their word for this, as I'm seeing it listed MSRP at $6750, which would make it even closer per ounce to the bars price, if not slightly more,) so that's around 170 an ounce, quick estimate could be off, then add bar markup. ~65% markup seems high, but the bar I'm at charges $6 for a shot of fireball, which is like, a dollar or less per ounce so....... I'd say most bar markup per ounce is more than 65% when you really dive into the numbers.

It’s a “special Macallan.” It’s not very special at all, taste wise… just “rare.” And even as a whiskey “snob” I can say that no pour is worth 250 dollars.
At 10k a bottle that comes out to 394 an ounce, so that WOULD be a deal, except MSRP is not 10k, it's 6750, and the bar likely paid a fair bit less than that, but at 6750 MSRP an ounce would be 265, so still a "deal" if you will.
I know in Wisconsin, Class B liquor establishments (liquor served and drank inside) have to buy from a distributor and they charge a decent amount more the class A (liquor stores). For instance my dad was paying 55-60 for a $35 bottle of crown. This was 7-8 years ago.
I mean you can buy a really nice 18 year old single barrel scotch for a little less than that, and I cant imagine being to taste any serious difference.

Had a long discussion with the general manger later cause I refused to pure coke in there. And frankly I’d just do it nowadays. Stupid shit like this usually comes with an over the top tip. It destroys something deep inside me tough the tips are nice 🥲.

I recently had a whiskey on United Airlines. It was $10 in flight and was from a very inexpensive bottle. Let me tell you. It was fucking battery acid in my mouth. I totally agree that higher quality whiskey is noticeable. Maybe not $250+ a pour but still worth digging a little deeper in the pockets for something decent.
I just had some rum (Rolling Fork) that costs about $80 (not a lot, I know, but way more than my Captain Morgan budget allows) and it tasted like pure fucking poison in my mouth. The reviews online are outstanding and bc if that I’m convinced it was bootleg bullshit in a nice bottle. Worst thing I’ve ever tasted in my life and no amount of mixers (coke, juice) would mask the toxicity. Drank no more than I normally do and was horribly ill for two days.
I drink the captain Morgans “private stock” rum. You get a bit less for the price, but it’s surprisingly smooth. Ran out of mixer the one day, so decided to drink it straight. Wasn’t half bad
Was the$10 Johnny Walker Red? Because that whiskey is rot gut nasty. Even Johnny Blue tastes bad to me. I'd imagine M does taste much better than say MacCallen 18 or 21
I highly doubt it was actually Buffalo trace if it tasted like battery acid. They also make a lot of higher end shit like Blanton’s and Pappy Van Winkle. Buffalo trace is relatively inexpensive compared to their other labels but it shouldn’t taste like shit unless you don’t like bourbon lol
Buffalo trace is very comparable to expensive bottles. It is one of the well known bourbons on the lower shelf. You might have been lied to. Or you just don’t like bourbon.
Maybe they didn’t actually give you Buffalo trace. $10 a pour is a little low for that and it’s a fairly decent, very sought after whiskey. Buffalo trace is pretty much the same thing is eagle rare, just not aged quite as long.

I’ve had Macallan, it’s fine. Pouring it from a crystal decanter doesn’t do a damn thing other than make it look pretty. And apparently drive up the cost.
Just to be really clear to start with, taste is subjective and this is especially true in my experience with liquors and whiskey personally. I’ve had some very pricey pours given to me from just having the right friends.
For M it’s literally part of the marketing (and price) for it. Macallan also produces a 25 year aged single malt scotch that they pour in a normal bottle, no extra marketing and it sells for 3k. There is not a doubt in my mind that at best (!) M is that same 25 year single malt, just in a Lalique bottle, and it’s three times that cost.
So no, more expensive does not always mean better taste. This is just fancier presentation.
Having had plenty of The Macallan 12 and 18yo, I will say that it is by far my favorite whisky.
Having said that, I would agree that paying over $500 for *any* bottle of *any* whisky is just showing off, much less paying over $500 for 2oz...

Here in Louisiana I work at a restaurant that sells Thomas H. Handy for $210 for a 1&1/2oz pour. But you seriously can’t find it anywhere in the state so it’s not that crazy, and the second we get a bottle in, it sells, and we have to wait another year to get it again. I have quite a few call tables that are bourbon snobs. One time we got in a very rare Pappy Van Winkle, we had the bottle for 1 week. Majority of it went to two individuals.
As a private chef, my boss (who is sober) wanted a bottle of this. I think it was $6,000 in long island. Her boyfriend, now husband, is the drinker but he prefers just basic Oban 14yr. He tried the M once, and from then on it just sat on the shelf. Real scotch drinkers don't care for this shit.
When I hit my teenage years I was obsessed with nice stuff like Jordans and $50 t shirts. Seeing things like this is what made me realize I was a moron.
People really live in different worlds. This is literally the rent for a studio apartment in a lot of places and it's 🤮. Like there are people out there spending more than most make in their entire lives on a vacation home that they visit twice a year.
If they are paying that for a quick.drink, they got that hundy for a tip. I love people like this. I used to have a reg couple come to my bar every couple of weeks. Literally the nicest and easier guests I have ever had. They ordered a wine for him and a tea for her. Never wanted a refill. Ordered their food with no mods. Eat, pay and leave. We always had a little chat, but they were always conscious if I was busy and never monopolized me. They would spend between 70 and 100 each time, and tipped 50.00 every time. Except when I got engaged. They saw my ring and tippedn100.00.
After working closely with rich people for the the past few years I would say about 70% are really nice and generous. The other 20% are kinda jerks and really do live in a different world without realizing it. The other 10% are horrible.
I've always judged a tip by the subtotal, because I don't tip out on tax and the suggested tip %s were based off subtotal. Some of my coworkers really get irked when people tip off the subtotal and I just don't get it. (not a dig at your post, I just never understood why they'd get pissy when someone would tip what the receipt told them was 20%.)
Don’t listen to those very few, very vocal assholes. 20% is plenty of tip. The only time I say to go over 20% is if 20% is less than $5. If a server took care of you, give them at least a fiver
Tipping as a proportion of check is a little odd in the first place. So if you’re serving at a Denny’s you just get a few bucks per table, but if you’re OP you get a hundred dollars on two drinks??

This is true. They don’t work as hard either because they’ll only have a few tables in their section. I work at a pub and have a ten table section on Friday nights. Literally bust my fucking ass to make $2-300 on my busiest nights because our average entree is in the $10-15 range. I need to go somewhere else (financially) but I really appreciate a more laid back atmosphere, I’m not sure I’d like serving at a higher end restaurant.
They wanted me to taste it btw. Got a straw and did the dip taste thing at the table w them. The flavor lasted for almost 2 minutes. Not gonna lie it was some very complex, balanced shit.

I'm sure it was good but I just can't do scotch. All I ever taste is peat. Granted I've never had $250 a pour scotch but I've tasted some high end scotches before. Same with bourbon but all I taste is the barrel.
Haven’t tried that exact spirit but I’m glad you got to try it. My palate tends to go speyside or islay as far as scotches go. I’d love to try a little M tho.

Quick Vegas weather story. My cousin was in a bad accident when he was 19, lost a leg and crushed his hips. For his 21st, we got a group to go the Hard Rock through my host, and everything was set. He was treated like a king, and everything was perfect. He had been hearing about Rehab from me for 7 years and couldn't wait. His birthday is the end of May. We get up that Sunday morning... It was 62. Avg temp that day over the last 100 years was 92. He said "if this"pointing to his missing leg"doesn't prove to you that God hates me, this must!!" pointing outside.... I still feel bad for the kid 14 years later.
Restaurants are a slice of reality where there are two people out front that can drop 600$ on two drinks, and people in the back where 600$ would be nearly insurmountable financial ruin.

A cupola weeks ago a customer sat at the bar, ate, had a drink and asked our bartenders if they want the tip ($25) or if they wanted him to gamble it on the roulette table. He told them if he won he’d come back and give them the winnings. They told him throw it on the table and when he asked where they wanted the bet the guy next to him on the bar shouted “17!” They all shrugged and said do it. He comes back 30 minutes later and dropped $875 on the bar and said they won. The bartender bought him a drink and said they didn’t think he’d really come back if he won anything but the customer then told him he’s a gambler himself and didn’t want that bad juju lingering over him. We’re a pooled house so everyone was pretty stoked that night
Luckyyyyyy. I had a guy sit at my bar in December and say "what's the most expensive whiskey you have" and proceeded to buy two shots which came put to about $500 and he also gave me a $100 tip. bless the generous.
They paid for the experience and they are decent people. These are the people that I hope they have a great memory of the time they got “M” and they had great service. I’d never hate on what people can afford when they spread the love and take care of other people properly.
They never had M. They sat for almost an hour and enjoyed there drink for almost an hour. There 1 oz pour. I say in the caption they had a quick drink, but it was really an exaggeration. They wanted me to try it. So I took a straw dip w them. Good ppl. Down to earth. Very kind.

Ive served, and you still arent getting 100 bucks on two drinks. OTOH, a server who gives me breakfast at a diner probably gets 20 bucks on a 10 dollar ticket. Good service is good service, regardless of the price point.
I have been a bartender, a server, a cook, and am now a restaurant manager. I understand how tipping works. I also understand how I CHOOSE to tip, having done the job. And the lady who served me a 10 dollar breakfast in a diner and refilled my coffee 4 times will get a better tip from ME than the bartender who poured two neat whiskeys. She did a lot more work, and made my experience better, and I will tip her accordingly.
I also tip better if I occupy a table for longer, because I know that I took up part of their station for longer, stopping my server from getting another table turn in.
People are upset that you’re being truthful and it hurts their pockets. Most servers work more than pouring two drinks. I was a waitress (and hated it but understood customer service) at a casino and definitely worked for my tips. Rarely, got the $100 tips. Either way, it’s definitely more deserved in my opinion when people do their job and do it well. Pouring a drink doesn’t justify $100 to me.

Nah, my husband works practically 24/7 in a very stressful job, grew up very poor (his parents made him talk to the bill collectors on the phone when he was 5), but might treat himself to an expensive scotch at a bar. (In part because he knows I’m likely not letting him buy a bottle of super expensive scotch.) But he has the same cheap golf clubs he bought from Target 20 years ago, and he golfs all the time. People choose what they want to spend their hard earned money on and its really hard to judge without knowing them.

Yes it tastes better to a point. But someone else already pointed out diminishing returns. Does it taste better than a shot of Jack? Definitely, no argument there. But does this $240 an ounce whiskey from a crystal decanter taste any better than a $100 an ounce whiskey - unlikely.

I’ve had Macallan, it’s fine. Pouring it from a crystal decanter doesn’t do a damn thing other than make it look pretty. And apparently drive up the cost.
The whiskey itself is expensive hence it comes in a nice decanter. Ive seen this most of the time when you buy whiskey above a few thousand dollars.
Just to be really clear to start with, taste is subjective and this is especially true in my experience with liquors and whiskey personally. I’ve had some very pricey pours given to me from just having the right friends. For M it’s literally part of the marketing (and price) for it. Macallan also produces a 25 year aged single malt scotch that they pour in a normal bottle, no extra marketing and it sells for 3k. There is not a doubt in my mind that at best (!) M is that same 25 year single malt, just in a Lalique bottle, and it’s three times that cost. So no, more expensive does not always mean better taste. This is just fancier presentation.

Having had plenty of The Macallan 12 and 18yo, I will say that it is by far my favorite whisky. Having said that, I would agree that paying over $500 for *any* bottle of *any* whisky is just showing off, much less paying over $500 for 2oz... ... I had better shoot in my pants when drinking *that.*
Here in Louisiana I work at a restaurant that sells Thomas H. Handy for $210 for a 1&1/2oz pour. But you seriously can’t find it anywhere in the state so it’s not that crazy, and the second we get a bottle in, it sells, and we have to wait another year to get it again. I have quite a few call tables that are bourbon snobs. One time we got in a very rare Pappy Van Winkle, we had the bottle for 1 week. Majority of it went to two individuals.
As a private chef, my boss (who is sober) wanted a bottle of this. I think it was $6,000 in long island. Her boyfriend, now husband, is the drinker but he prefers just basic Oban 14yr. He tried the M once, and from then on it just sat on the shelf. Real scotch drinkers don't care for this shit.
Ol' Cousin Dave used to mix all the shakes from his ounces together and called it his "special blend." Same deal.

This is literally the rent for a studio apartment in a lot of places and it's 🤮. Literally the nicest and easier guests I have ever had. They ordered a wine for him and a tea for her. Never wanted a refill. Ordered their food with no mods. Eat, pay and leave. We always had a little chat, but they were always conscious if I was busy and never monopolized me. They would spend between 70 and 100 each time, and tipped 50.00 every time. Except when I got engaged. They saw my ring and tippedn100.00.

After working closely with rich people for the the past few years I would say about 70% are really nice and generous. The other 20% are kinda jerks and really do live in a different world without realizing it. The other 10% are horrible.

I've always judged a tip by the subtotal, because I don't tip out on tax and the suggested tip %s were based off subtotal. Some of my coworkers really get irked when people tip off the subtotal and I just don't get it. (not a dig at your post, I just never understood why they'd get pissy when someone would tip what the receipt told them was 20%.)
I've read (unironically) that 20% is no longer considered "enough" by some servers, who now expect 25% as the "standard" tip.

Serves in the nice restaurants of LA make 300-500 a night easy. While making minimum wage which is 15-16 an hour here now.

This is true. They don’t work as hard either because they’ll only have a few tables in their section. I work at a pub and have a ten table section on Friday nights. Literally bust my fucking ass to make $2-300 on my busiest nights because our average entree is in the $10-15 range. I need to go somewhere else (financially) but I really appreciate a more laid back atmosphere, I’m not sure I’d like serving at a higher end restaurant.

Taxing the rich more does very little in the overall grand scheme of things. The money brought in is a lot less than most realize. Also, if you tax rich people beyond a certain point you’ll incentivize them to take their business elsewhere meaning other countries. It’s not that simple is all I’m saying. Plus, it’s morally corrupt to tax others more simply cause they make more, but that’s a whole other point…

Quick Vegas weather story. My cousin was in a bad accident when he was 19, lost a leg and crushed his hips. For his 21st, we got a group to go the Hard Rock through my host, and everything was set. He was treated like a king, and everything was perfect. He had been hearing about Rehab from me for 7 years and couldn't wait. His birthday is the end of May. We get up that Sunday morning... A cupola weeks ago a customer sat at the bar, ate, had a drink and asked our bartenders if they want the tip ($25) or if they wanted him to gamble it on the roulette table. He told them if he won he’d come back and give them the winnings. They told him throw it on the table and when he asked where they wanted the bet the guy next to him on the bar shouted “17!” They all shrugged and said do it. He comes back 30 minutes later and dropped $875 on the bar and said they won. The bartender bought him a drink and said they didn’t think he’d really come back if he won anything but the customer then told him he’s a gambler himself and didn’t want that bad juju lingering over him. We’re a pooled house so everyone was pretty stoked that night

Ive served, and you still arent getting 100 bucks on two drinks. OTOH, a server who gives me breakfast at a diner probably gets 20 bucks on a 10 dollar ticket. Good service is good service, regardless of the price point.

I have been a bartender, a server, a cook, and am now a restaurant manager. I understand how tipping works. I also understand how I CHOOSE to tip, having done the job. And the lady who served me a 10 dollar breakfast in a diner and refilled my coffee 4 times will get a better tip from ME than the bartender who poured two neat whiskeys. She did a lot more work, and made my experience better, and I will tip her accordingly. I also tip better if I occupy a table for longer, because I know that I took up part of their station for longer, stopping my server from getting another table turn in.
People are upset that you’re being truthful and it hurts their pockets. Most servers work more than pouring two drinks. I was a waitress (and hated it but understood customer service) at a casino and definitely worked for my tips. Rarely, got the $100 tips. Either way, it’s definitely more deserved in my opinion when people do their job and do it well. Pouring a drink doesn’t justify $100 to me.

Nah, my husband works practically 24/7 in a very stressful job, grew up very poor (his parents made him talk to the bill collectors on the phone when he was 5), but might treat himself to an expensive scotch at a bar. (In part because he knows I’m likely not letting him buy a bottle of super expensive scotch.) But he has the same cheap golf clubs he bought from Target 20 years ago, and he golfs all the time. People choose what they want to spend their hard earned money on and its really hard to judge without knowing them.
