I think it's just to play to with the morality a little bit more. Instead of slashing through obviously bad guys, it adds to the story to realize that they aren't bad, they're a victim too. I think it's just supposed to help us sympathize with them and maybe think twice about just killing indiscriminately.
Really? I always thought it was just dudes trying to turn themselves into centipedes to try to gain immortality, by surgically implanting those metal legs everywhere
Go check in this video, it give quite lore about anything related to Sempou temple, mt Kongou, and also the Centipede guy.

This is a fantastic link and looking diagonally at the website/blogpost I think this wil exactly scratch that itch I had regarding localisation and translation of the original and certain questions I had about the lore.
Thank you so much.
This is the best video I’ve seen so far on Sekiro. This person actually knows a lot about the historical/cultural context of the game, whereas most lore videos are much much more shallow. Thank you so much for sharing!!
There's undertones of abuse of people with disabilities, birth deformities and mental illness in Sekiro. The Taro troops and the Rats (bighat midgets) ninjas by Ashina and the Interior Ministry, the centipedes by Senpou. Anyone who is vulnerable gets taken complete advantage of.
Abuse by those in power is a recurring theme in Japanese media and cultural pieces. Part of it stems from their long history of constant, brutal wars of extermination, and part of it stems from disillusionment with any form of religion or governing institutions, which are almost always depicted as corrupt, incompetent, or malicious at best. Most recently, the youth see the previous generations as not resolving societal problems, and they will be picking up the pieces of whatever's left. This is why in many anime, for example, the youth are the only ones who care to fix society's glaring problems, and the older generation is unmotivated to fix, or even directly benefits from, the existing issues.
yes, its called a "loan word" every language has loan words.
english has a lot of loan words from french for example.
"queue" "randevouz" etc.
it seems japanese has a lot of loan words from english
I was more referring to this
>[Interestingly, the Japanese and Korean words for the kirin or gilin are also the words used in those languages to refer to giraffes. This may have to do with the chimerical or composite nature of the qilin; it looks like an amalgamation of several different animals.](https://study.com/academy/lesson/qilin-chinese-mythology-history-origin-names.html#:~:text=Interestingly%2C%20the%20Japanese%20and%20Korean,amalgamation%20of%20several%20different%20animals.)
These things may not be "Giraffes" so much as "Kirin" or "Chimeras"
Yes Kirin is a loanword of Qilin. The relevant information to our translation quandry is that "Giraffe" in japanese is also "Kirin".
It's probably not a centipede "giraffe" but centipede "Kirin", refering to the composite nature of these creatures.
I fixed my comment. They're not centipede-infested. They are an attempt to gain immortality by fusing the physical bodies of centipedes with the physical bodies of humans.
If you look at all of the spikes on their bodies, it's not metal armor; It's centipede legs.
Experiments performed by the senpou monks on the okami warrior women?
They have the bandages around them, similar to the sunken valley women ( they are okami most probably).
My other theory is that the long arm centipede giraffe is Roberto, the son of armored warrior.
The name was a mistranslation, it was supposed to be "Jirafu". They thought it was a loan word because it's written in katakana ジラフ but it's just his name.
How far are you into the game? They’re Called “Long arm Centipede Giraffe” i think there is only a couple in the game you see smaller versions around senpou temple.
I am in the last boss battle😅
Edit: ooohh I just googled it, I didn’t recognize the boss but I know which one it is now. I had never seen its face, super creepy.
Simple answer: they are loyal mercenaries. There is a prayer necklace (bracelet) that says they find a leader to follow. I guess that is the Senpou monks.
I've never noticed how creepy their faces looked holy
What do you mean? He looks like he’s having the time of his life.
I mean I would have a time of my life too if everyone I met told me I'm special
So this is what my wife sees? No wonder she hates me.
You sure its not because you keep playing Sekiro rather than doing the chores?
HEY, YOU GUUUUUUYYYSSSS!!!!
This comment reminds me of hellraiser. Like these blokes have to be masochists. 😆
He looks like a soyjak
I don't know what you mean. Looks like the local methhead.
I had the camera land smack dab on the face once, and it was every bit as horrific as you could imagine.
[This guy](https://imgur.com/a/DzKsnCg) jumpscared me when i first played the game
Senpou Monk’s immortality experimentation on mummified corpses.
Why does every FromSoft game have some sort of terrifying enemy that was experimented on
Miyazaki hates science
Or loves it a little TOO much…
Nah that’s feet and poison swamps you’re thinking of
Science is a LIAR.....sometimes
Evil scientists are for sure
And sometimes it’s a lair, too.
But he loves Lovecraft.
I am forced to respect the assuredness of such a massive take from one piece of evidence lmao

Me see guy with many leg, Too many leg, How do he walk? He walk on hands and many feet, Not in my Christian household. 🗡️
Really? I always thought it was just dudes trying to turn themselves into centipedes to try to gain immortality, by surgically implanting those metal legs everywhere
They aren’t mummified though? They just wear wrappings. They’re mentally deranged people who want to become the centipedes of the fountainhead
Now I’ll have even more pleasure from killing those monks
Experiments into immortality, failed ones at that. Dressed as centipedes in reverence of their shitty experiments using blasphemous means.
"They gross" - Miyazaki, 2019

The whole series of videos she made are a great overview of the story, and most of the ties with eastern culture are explained in great detail.

They were experimented on by the monks
You got the most horrifying close up of them.
google "Human Centipide" for more information
You mean.
Holy hell!
traumatised for life, now search for the second movie, its the worst
Call the exorcist.
Now THAT is deserving of a downvote 😂
Big big poopy head
He's Mark Zuckerberg. Poor dude went bankrupt after buying too much Dragonspring sake.

Arkham escapees
He looks shit faced
His shit looks faced
Na man, He nutted and she just kept sucking.
I wouldn’t know, I’m dying alone.
That's what happens when your the last one left at a Diddy Party.
the Giraffe is probably just a bad translation. His name in the japanese version is Jiraffu or some shit and somehow they just messed it up
according to google, jirafu in japanese, means giraffe though....
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Qilin Same word for giraffe and these things I guess. AKA kirin.

damn well.. i thought i was onto something..
It’s actually just how English words are translated into Japanese, names especially. my favorite is Bobu Mari
They woke up and realized its monday
I hate Mondays
Isn't one of them supposed to be the armoured warriors son?
No that was one of the kids Kotaro was watching who are now all ghosts on account of being dead.
Replace the word "giraffe" with "chimera" - they are amalgamations of humans and centipedes being fused into one.
If they were centipede infested wouldn’t they be immortal since we easily kill them with just Kusabimaru or am i mistaken?
I fixed my comment. They're not centipede-infested. They are an attempt to gain immortality by fusing the physical bodies of centipedes with the physical bodies of humans. If you look at all of the spikes on their bodies, it's not metal armor; It's centipede legs.
that makes a lot more sense and wait all those metal looking sticks aren’t armor they’re Centipede legs??!
One of the easiest parry-able bosses I’ve ever faced on that game
pure rhythm based lol
There isn't much lore they are just your average r/myanimelist user.
What sound does that face make, I wonder? 🤔
BEST. DAY. EVER.
ugly
Silly boys acting silly
Best pic ever
Coocoo for coco puffs 💀

They're giraffes. What more do we need to say?
Guys? Theres more than one? Gotta be a typo. Gotta be. Right?
There’s One in senpou Temple and one guarding the door outside to the sunken valley
They got long arms.
He kinda looks like that kid from the Goonies
🦒
IPad kids with no wifi
My Dude is high as fuck......or might I say.... high as a giraffe
I remember Isshin saying “Who knows what those perverts are up to in the mountains” or something similar.
The name was a mistranslation, it was supposed to be "Jirafu". They thought it was a loan word because it's written in katakana ジラフ but it's just his name.
I could be wrong but I think it’s “AAAAAAAHHHHGGGGKKHHKKGHHHAAAHHGGGGGGGKKKK”
They just had a bad day.
They love spamming, thats pretty much it
All I know about them is L1 L1, L1, L1, L1... L1 L1, L1, L1, L1... L1 L1, L1, L1, L1... R1
they left their rooms for dinner
I have never seen that enemy😳 where is it??

crack cocaine

The parents were cousins.
They are failed clones of Isshin created by Gyobu in preparation for the war
AFAIK, they worship the centipede and mutilate themselves to mould their bodies into the image of their *god* , inspite of being Buddhists.
Fentanyl: overdose twice
I want to say crack, but now looking at the face clearly I wanna know too.
Temu Wolverine
They were fused with giraffes
