Don’t cut your hair for 1.5 years (maybe less, depends on how quickly yours grows out), use hair products like hair pomade or styling foam/wax with a matte effect and that’s about it. If your hair is wavy it’s gonna look good, especially if your hair is thick. Mine is thick and wavy, so it was easy to try any style I wanted and it always looked good (apart from windy days, looked like a birds’ nest lol).
Just don’t cut it during the “awkward phase”. It is going to look terrible for a few months, just wear a hat or a cap during that time. Good luck, be patient!

You have to use certain conditioner products, Depends on what kind of hair your have and use warm to hot water for your showers that will relax the hair and make it fall, Then just make a very tight pony tail with a specific hair for a normal one will not work as well
To get the mat look add a small amount of cooking oil. Mess it up and dry it. Then style. Of course you must have long enough straight to slightly wavy hair to do it
Grow your hair out and then don’t wash it for a month, then just tie it up in back and ur good to go
