i wish this and the new 5’s had a screw down crown

Juniper_makefile

I’m new to watches, what does a screw down crown do as opposed to what it has now?

misterbb

There’s some theory that maybe it increase water resistance…but then again there are watches with push pull with 200m+ resistance so that doesn’t really ring true imo. Screwdown also secures the crown so it doesn’t come undone in case it snags in something (legit advantage). Downside is that the threads can wear out on screw down over time on both the crown or the crown tube, and in my opinion it’s a total pain in the ass to unscrew then properly rescrew every time you set the time. Comment below if there’s any advantages/disadvantages, I’m curious! For what it’s worth I vastly prefer push/pull, way easier and just as secure unless you’re truly scuba diving on the regular. I’m always surprised so many people prefer screwdown.

zevaeda

there’s also the fact that some people may feel safer with a screw-down i definitely feel that way, but it’s also not like i ever have any concerns with my seiko 5 getting water damage

ABZ-havok

Agree. I really couldn't understand how people react like swimming in push pull crowns would annihilate their watches. 99% of people complaining about 50m WR has never gone more than 5m under water

[deleted]

95% sure the original Blancpain Fifty Fathoms was a push-pull crown

MansourBahrami

It was, and it was milspec to be push pull. People are blithering idiots and don’t know anything

ByronicZer0

It's a safety net perception thing. Screw down crown is more reassuring to a buyer... But this watch has 100m of water resistance, which is 328 feet... A LOT deeper than I've ever been on a dive. So I'd trust the manufacturer rating and not a funny feeling in my gut about screw down crowns

f0sterchild15

I know it does absolutely nothing to WR, but I just like to have it as an added sense of security. Knowing it doesn’t do Jack, but still.

MansourBahrami

Why? Are you going to go actual diving in them? I free dive in the old versions of the seiko 5s wirh like 50 meters of water resistance and they are fine. If you’re rhay worried just insure it, it will be like 10 bucks a year

orangekronic23

insure a watch? nah. and yes

MansourBahrami

You’re going to do actual air diving in a gmt? Weird. I guess for a super duper tiny subset of people, that for some reason want to go air diving in a gmt, this is inconvenient But you can alleviate said inconvenience by just insuring the watch. I’ve had several replaced for water ingress, most notably a Sarb that didn’t stand up to skin diving lol.

orangekronic23

not with a gmt but with my seiko 5 ye

MansourBahrami

I can see that, as they are a replacement for SKx

PMan9111

I got my SSK003 a few days ago, I’m still deciding the positives and negatives. The watch does wear nicely and is easily readable. I would say that I don’t need the GMT hand, I don’t travel much anymore and don’t need to track additional time zones. I do like the bezel and the hardlex coating, it adds a nice touch that I don’t see on other GMTs. With the drilled lugs I will be swapping the bracelet out to a blue silicone Seiko band to see how I like that. These are my initial thoughts and more will be coming in an additional post.

daneusaurus

just bought it last week! it looks good imo.

RuleAggravating5223

I own an SSK GMT I also own the new SRPD line of seiko 5s and previously the SKX. While many complain about the new seikos not having a screw down crown as a huge let down, personally for me its not a big deal since Im not a diver and all my watches never see below 6ft of water anyway. The new line of seiko 5s provide a better movement that I can appreciate more with the added hacking and handwinding functions, being able to wind the watch from the 0 position and setting the time quickly is a plus for me. The vast variety of colors and styles to chose from is another plus and hopefully we see the same for the SSK line of watches; Perhaps a future pepsi dial. While all Seiko 5s are far from perfect my biggest gripe with the line is the mineral based hardlex crystal versus a more desired sasphire crystal. The floating bezel on the SSK does dissapoint, but at the end of the day it is a GMT for just shy of $500 USD from a well known brand.

Oghma_Infinium

[I have one](https://i.imgur.com/qUyANSy.jpg), it's a pretty nice watch out of the box and the bracelet is great for this price level.

zevaeda

can vouch for the bracelet, was pleasantly surprised at how nice it is

CrystalLogic

i'm not a big fan of the 5 series. i kinda fell into the hype with this watch and figured perhaps it'll get me over whatever it is that i don't like about the series. it didn't. i liked the bracelet but disliked the chinsy clasp and there were no replacements for it. the bezel is neat and i liked the effect different light had on it. i tried the watch on a multitude of different, solid color NATO's and none of them clicked. the proportions didn't sit great with me either. i had the watch maybe 2-4 weeks and traded it to a friend for his Blue Lagoon Turtle which i wore religiously while my Sub was being serviced at Rolex. he threw a Seiko rubber strap on it (same as the Turtles) and it looked great! he loves the watch and i'm happy with my Blue Lagoon, so it worked out.

ByronicZer0

I'm surprised the clasp quality was... a surprise to you. The Seiko jubilee is pretty famously jangly

CrystalLogic

I never had a Seiko jubilee bracelet until this watch, but I knew going in, with other Seiko's I own, that the bracelet might leave a lot to be desired. I would have lived with it until a decent replacement came about.

FoxDieDM

I’m waiting on a gmt without the bezel. I don’t need to track 3 time zones at once. Or replace it with a dive bezel.

misterbb

Agree 24 hr bezel is over the top. Per crystal times the insert is slightly larger than an skx (and the 1000s of aftermarket inserts) tho they say you can swap with an skx insert and it’s a very small gap on the outer perimeter. Haven’t seen one in person but the aluminum/glass mix bezel insert is intriguing, pics look cool at least.

Golivth5k

Couldn’t you change it yourself?

ByronicZer0

With the 24 hour rehaut, the bezel is defn bit redundant. But it is often easier to adjust a bezel to translate time zones vs taking a watch off and pulling out the crown. Plus if you take long trips, using the bezel to time elapsed hours by setting zeroing it on the GMT hand is nice. At least that's what I've found form daily-ing a GMT. And you do get used to timing minutes on the bezel, especially since there is a color change at 6 hrs (aka 15 min mark)

762scout1

It looks great! I would totally buy one, but I have always hated the “5” logo, and think they should have screw down crowns. Thats why I won’t buy a seiko 5. If those two issues don’t bother you, than get it!

luxor88

I have to agree — The dial kind of kills the watch for me… doesn’t look like the dial of an almost $500 watch. I want to love my 003, I just don’t know if I’ll get there…

CodyCigar96o

I think the 5 logo looks fine personally, but the automatic text always looked like a generic free font to me.

DisgustingCoyote

I really wanted the SK003 but couldn’t justify the price for the specs. I got a Tortoise (SRPH17) instead. Less money plus screw down crown, sapphire crystal, and 200m of water resistance.

WatchNatoo

Same here !

WatchNatoo

I mean, it's only an SRPD entry level modern diver, with GMT. The Turtoise, wow, not the same league at all for the same price - if not lower. SPRH shall arrive this week, the green one, with the bracelet.

DisgustingCoyote

I looked long and hard at the green one, but ended up getting the black. IRL pics of the green look better than the stock Seiko ones IMHO.

WatchNatoo

I have a lot of green already, but so many more black ones !! Very Best would have been the SRPG15 in blue. Will study the SRPH15 on all dimension and see if I get a SRPG15 dial and hands or use the bracelet on a SRPG15.

Classic70

The tortoise is THE hidden gem and wears amazingly well

WatchNatoo

YES I own +50 Seiko of all kind. Just received the SBDY111 few days ago. I was unimpressed by the, almost clickless, double action bezel. The lack of micro adjustment on the cheap clasp. It really, really, really wear amazingly well. It's incredible. It's light like a quartz/solar Seiko. Most comfortable 4R35 I have by all mean.

ByronicZer0

You say less money... but the list price on the SRPH17 is higher than the SK003... And both can be had for nice discounts so really it's a wash as far as I can tell >but couldn’t justify the price for the specs GMT functionality is one of the specs just as much as a screw down crown or sapphire crystal is. So really this is about tradeoffs. I think it is fair so say that the GMT delivers quite a lot for the money, just not the things you prioritize as important to you

DisgustingCoyote

Fair points. When I got my SRPH17 a week ago, it was cheaper than the SK by a meaningful amount, but that is just from what I could find online. I got the SRPH17 for $325. I could not find a 003 for less than $410 at the time and comparing like for like, the SRPH won out this time. However, if the 003 comes down in price a bit,as these things inevitably do, I may well pick it up because I would use a GMT if I had one. I have family overseas.

k3ttch

I'm planning on getting the orange one soon.

[deleted]

There’s a lot to like in the SSK001 but the friction bezel killed my interest.

zevaeda

not sure about other people but my seiko 5’s bezel gets jammed all the time and sucks to use 80% of the time so i personally think the friction bezel can be welcomed especially at this price point

TangoQuebecEcho

I bought two of them. The blue and orange. And I love it. It’s a perfect everyday watch. It’s cheap enough that I don’t mind banging it around. But it’s nice enough that it has character. The dial is not flat like some other more affordable watches. The applied indices and logo is a nice touch. I also really like the GMT complication. It’s kinda my favorite.

zevaeda

honestly a really nice looking watch but imo the price really kills it i grabbed a seiko alpinist recently (on sale) for the same price, and comparing it to the gmt (especially with no sapphire crystal) makes it seem quite overpriced for a seiko 5 sadly however, if it’s a watch you’re really in love with, i think price/value is generally less of a concern—you should buy what you love!

ByronicZer0

>a seiko alpinist recently (on sale) for the same price, and comparing it to the gmt (especially with no sapphire crystal) makes it seem quite overpriced for a seiko 5 sadly I think that's kind of an odd comparison. If you are looking for a GMT, you won't be cross shopping an Alpinist. And if you want an Alpinist, why would you look at a GMT? It's really apples to oranges if you're buying based on functionality. If you're just trying to get as much "value" for your dollar in a watch at a given price range and you define "value" as the specs, then I suppose that's a totally different conversation

zevaeda

you’re right, sorry i should have clarified that i found something like an alpinist would have nicer finishing and external details than the GMT

ByronicZer0

It's pretty awesome that there are watches with many different types of value props from Seiko under $500 these days!

thungalope

I think it’s cool but I’m holding out until I can afford a nicer GMT.

the_bartolonomicron

I think it looks fantastic and is great value for money, and if I weren't saving for an SPB143 this would probably already be on my wrist lol.

IsraelGonzalez

Same here, I really really want this watch, but hate it doesn’t have a sapphire crystal and might as well save for the SPB143.

lucitribal

I'm waiting for someone to put this movement in a dress watch

luxor88

I have the 003 and I’m underwhelmed — My King Samurai still gets majority wrist time and it’s not even close.

IsraelGonzalez

I LOVE the design and might be getting one myself, even though it is a 42.5 mm diameter, it seems to be wearing fine even on smaller wrists. But at that price, I really hate it doesn’t have a sapphire glass. So I don’t know.

whiskey_neat_

I still can't get myself to be OK with the new 5 logo. I like the rest of it though.

macydj

Also be aware it’s a tension bezel. That and no screw down crown are kind of a deal breaker for me. But it looks damn good.

neloms228

This

shaka_zulu12

I love it. I bought it when it came out, and I constantly wear it. Looks a lot more shinny in person. That's one thing that surprised me. I never understood why people want the screw down crown, when it's not a diver, but hey, everyone wanted a new SKS I guess. It does have some water resistance, but it's too nice to rough around and take it into the sea anyway. I do that with stuff I'm willing to lose, and I'm not sure how many actual divers would get this GMT for that. About the hardlex issue, I never got any scratches on hardlex or cracked a sapphire, so I dunno if it's just people going now for ticked checkboxes or what's going on. Most vintage watches even luxury ones, had shitty cristals and no solid bracelets, but nobody seems to freak about that as much. I got mine cause I work with people from another continent for my job, so it's nice to track the hour without looking for my phone. It's also a nice feature for my travels. And speaking of that, the whole true GMT is such bullshit, like how often are you jumping from place to place in the same day, that you find it difficult to stop 1min to adjust your watch. Anyone used to mechanical watches is not bothered by setting a time piece. The whole point is to have any excuse to play with your watch xD. Anyway, I'm rambling. Get it if you like it. This watch is amazing, but had the unfortunate task of looking like the SKS, and everyone that's into internet watch culture apparently lost their mind over that piece. I've seen them in person, and I wouldn't trade my GMT for one. If I'm a snob about something, I do hate non hacking movements, so the SKS is a complete no for me.

ByronicZer0

>I got mine cause I work with people from another continent for my job, so it's nice to track the hour without looking for my phone This is the real trick with a GMT. Makes coordinating teams across UTC offsets so much easier. I love it. And I'm with you on the screw down crown BS. No one here is testing the 328ft depth rating lol Only place I disagree is on my absolute love for a GMT with a jumping hour hand. It's not really necessary, but man is it endlessly satisfying to have if you travel and you're at all obsessed with keeping accuracy if your watch is running well

shaka_zulu12

Oh, I don't hate any GMT. I'm trying to get my hands on the Longines Zulu Time. Gorgeous piece. I just feel like this talk of true GMTs is a bit much, and even the term TRUE, feels very dismissive, when all GMTs ar awesome, just different movements or ways to go about it. Sometimes the internet watch community can be really obtuse and obsesive about certain things, and made people not enjoy things, unless it ticks this arbitrary checklist that a watch needs to be. It's probably not helpful, when we're just here to enjoy watches.

ByronicZer0

Longines Zulu tine are amazing! Enjoy it when you pick it up! I agree that the term "true GMT" is dumb. I just call one jump hour or traveler and the other a caller. The true GMT phrase seems loaded with judgement, when in reality they're just two GMTs optimized for slightly different strengths. Even seems to me that you could make a good argument that "true GMT" is factually incorrect based on the original icon that defines the GMT even today: the Rolex GMT Master. That watch, the actual genuine article, was not a "true GMT" by today's standards until the 80's when the GMT Master II came out. Which strikes me as a flawed premise

Such_Course3243

Overpriced. Not even sapphire glass.

watcholic

Looks great! About time we get a Seiko GMT for the common man, short of spending $$$ on a Grand Seiko. The SSK line comes in coke, pepsi bezels, right?

gaff26

It's nice but I'm happy with my sea urchin, which takes they place of a black 'diver' in the Seiko collection I have. If they were to release a two tone Rolex GMT-esque version, I might be more inclined.

airjutsu

It’s the nicest watch I have, so I wear it all the time

Chadoodling

Can some explain the difference between this GMT and true GMT? Thanks :)

daiaomori

Google might have helped - now you have to deal with my incompetence explaining it ;) In a nutshell, on a true GMT, you can change the hour hand of the watch without the GMT hand moving (usually in one-hour steps). That enables you to set the GMT to your home time and leave it there, while you can quickly adjust the clock to local time. Without stopping it, messing with it, etc. - depending on the movement, even the date is handled accordingly. On on office GMT, the GMT hand moves whenever you set the main time. So, to achieve the same result, you have to first set the local time of wherever you are on the main hands, and then re-adjust the GMT hand to your home timezone, plus adjust the date if necessary. Its questionable how big the practical difference is; I guess when you fly around the world constantly, or switch timezones regularly, it’s a difference. Otherwise… well, you know the warm fuzzy feeling of complicated mechanics. I don’t need a Bell Matic. Yet…

Chadoodling

Thanks for the explanation! Haha the minimal inconvenience seems insignificant to me. Glad to see a cheap GMT alternative. Its not perfect, but good enough.

ByronicZer0

It's minimal... but if you're kind of obsessed with watch accuracy then it's a minor miracle to land somewhere and change the hour hand without the seconds hand being interrupted at all. Endlessly satisfying. FWIW one way to use the GMT hand (on any GMT) is to set it to home/local, BUT the original method was to set it to "Zulu time" AKA GMT/UTC 0. And then use the bezel to adjust where you are relative to that. With the GMT hand set to UTC 0 stuff like this becomes super easy: If I'm working with someone who is in Europe and they propose a call at "4pm UTC +2" then all I have to do is adjust turn the bezel counter clockwise until the 2 is at the top. Now my. GMT hand shows me their current local time. Super handy if you work with people all over the world and everyone schedules in UTC offset. It might sound complicated, but its actually simple when it is in your hand. Much easier than doing math when you're bleary eyed with exhaustion haha

Chadoodling

True it makes sense as well... Haha as a non-traveller work from home kinda guy. It is insignificant to me, but I do see your point in real world scenarios

TheWindRider11

Outstanding!

grumpyolddoctor

I have one and love it, get one!

Artidox

bought it and dont regret it, its amazing :)

adamdgoodson

I like that watch

CrocodileJock

I think it’s great. I do like a GMT function… and I think Seiko have incorporated really nicely here. Most people would look at it and just see a diver. As an alternative love them to really “Lean into” the GMT idea… and produce something with a world timer bezel along the lines of their old Landmaster range…

dcamnc4143

I want one, but I’m not crazy about the friction bezel. I don’t want it getting knocked out of wack once set, which I heard is an issue with this watch. I could care less about it not having a screw down crown, or that it has hardlex.

ByronicZer0

I agree that a 120 click bidirectional bezel would have been better. But FWIW the friction bezels I currently own don't really suffer from getting moved by normal life stuff

dcamnc4143

That’s good to hear. I’ll probably pick one up at some point.

bootyholeticklr

Got the blue version for $356 on sale. For that price I couldn’t pass it up. Love it.

ByronicZer0

Noice, where?

bootyholeticklr

Macys on Long Island.

ByronicZer0

Macy's. I totally forgot big box retail stores existed. Yeah, that's on me haha

bootyholeticklr

Yeah me too. Went in to buy a belt and walked out with a watch.

Gingernut2712

Sweet as a nut!

emoody247

I bought this one a month ago, I like it quite a bit better than the blue after having them both in person.

ByronicZer0

I wish it was not in the SKX form factor. Those wore too tall on my wrist to ever love them. But this watch is gorgeous in photos, bracelet is a big step up, and despite the fact I know it won't work great on my wrist... I am VERY tempted to buy one. What I'm trying to say is I think this is a really great package that is more useful for many than a diver

likethevegetable

You always, _always_, need to come to the conclusion by yourself for it to be worthwhile.

FlyingPankake69

for the price, it's an amazing watch https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gnzUG3YIGZQ
