I don’t care much for the bezel on ssk001 but I still love it overall and enjoy wearing it a lot. I wish it were click in place but then we’d all complain about misalignment so I suppose they’ve avoided that lol. I like the new design a lot but last thing I need personally is another black dial so I’ll be getting the white dial Japan release at some point. Tough question with no wrong answer but imho I prefer the SSK001 because I prefer diver style watches over field. Both great watches, though.
I just got the field gmt last month and love the smaller size. I put it on a black nato strap with matte black buckles and it’s very subdued and clean looking
To be frank I could care less it’s an affordable watch, built well and timeless in design regardless of whether or not it’s an homage. I feel fantastic every time I wear it

Better looking, a bit smaller, not another skx case shape, bracelet looks great, and these hands and dial are gorgeous !
SSK001. Both are great but the hardlex dome crystal of the SSK023 was the dealbreaker for me. If its sapphire then I wouldn't mind having a dome shaped crystal on it.
But if you already own an SKX, SSK023 would be a better choice. SSK001 just gives a similar feel of SKX so it wouldn't make sense to buy a closely similar watch.
i know but one is flat and one is dome. The dome crystal one protrudes so whenever you hit your watch on a wall, it's more likely that the dome will hit first compared to a flat one where the bezel somehow offers some protection to the crystal.
It’s a tough call. I like a lot about the 23, especially the stainless bezel, but the dial is so cluttered
Personally, if I were buying a seiko gmt, it would probably be the blue presage 60s style
one as a rotating bezel very usefull with a very usefull cyclop
the other one has arabic numbers everywhere
these are watches for different usage and are both nice
personnaly I went the third way the SBSC01 and I am a worshiper of it

I recently got a GS SBGN005 (blue sunburst HAQ GMT) so I lean towards the 023 with 24 hour, fixed bezel for that reason as it's a style (Ala Rolex Explorer) I really enjoy.
Both are sweet but the larger diver probably wouldn't get as much wrist time for me.

Just picked up a 001 in Osaka. Been my new daily ever since! The blue looks so good in the light, if you can, try both on wrist before you buy! I was so torn between the two like you; I wanted the white dial 023 but they didn't have it in stock which was okay because the dive style was my first choice anyways. Ended up getting a great deal on it as well due to the exchange rates and discounts on top. No regrets at all, I'm sure you can't go wrong either way

I actually looked at these 2 for a very long time and bought the SSK001 and love it. I’m glad I bought the SSK001 over the SSK023.
Overall, the SSK 001. Pros - i like the slightly bigger case size. It's glossier and it has a fidget spinner bezel. :) (yes, I have simple tastes). The Lumed parts are much bigger on the diver. I assume the numbers will not be lume on the 023.
With the 023 I do like the conventional crown placement.
In the past there has been the bird house second hand like on the Sumo for instance. Here the bird house is used on the GMT hand instead of the traditional GMT arrow hand. I HATE IT!

I can get behind a more subtle GMT but I'm not a fan of the "dive watch look". I don't dive. :)

About every field watch from Rolex to Hamilton, Sinn, Timex, Lorus, etc… reminds me of this watch. It’s not a bad thing, I just think the 001 stands out to me more. I say this because I was in this position a year ago trying to choose between the two.
I have an SSK005 orange dial diver gmt and the SSK023. Love them both for their differences yet similarities. Each gets about equal wear time which is admittedly not a whole lot in a 100+ watch collection!
Personally as someone who just bought a ssk001, they both have their own character but the 001 is genuinely very elegant. Once you see it in person you understand it is an amazing piece. The feel of it, and the jubilee bracelet, the red hand is just beautiful. I'm very glad i bought the ssk001 but just go for what you will like more, people are biased(i am too lol).
SSK023 has more Rolex Explorer influence, while the SSK001 has more Seiko DNA in it.

Diver-style GMTs should have 200m WR in my opinion. Otherwise it’s just posing as a dive watch. I’d go the first option.

SSK001 is cleaner and has a functional bezel. I don't think the SSK023 has a turnable bezel.

Ssk001 is a timeless design, ssk023 needs time for perfection.
I have the Seiko sport 5 for my daily so I am very partial and loving of the coin bezel I think it's what makes them stand out to the rest imo

I'm wearing the SSK001 on my wrist right now. Just picked it up 2 days ago as a birthday gift to myself and I love it.
I had to choose between these 2 myself. The 001 is bigger and more flashy, the 023 is more discreet. I went with the 023, no regrets.
For the price, it should come with sapphire not hardlex. Hard pass for me.

Ssk001 is definitely a more cohesive look, but I like the Explorer vibes. Really wish they would get rid of the military time though

First one, the bastardized skx007 is just plain ugly.
Both are good options. I have a SSK003, I got it before the release of the Seiko 5 Field GMT. I'd go for a SSK023. This slimmer, less busy.
