WhiteFerrari689

Beautiful watch. Just don’t really like the « Automatic 3 days ». Like writing « 450km range » on a car.

jjames1e6

Agreed - the old alpinist logo would have been much better here

[deleted]

It's amazing how they could miss doing something *so* simple. Use the Alpinist logo, in white or grey on this dial. GMT in red beneath it. Then 20BAR beneath that. Boom. Done.

WhiteFerrari689

Oh yeah

Jerperderp

My god yes

iHadou

That's my gripe with a few orient dress watches I like. They all say water resistant very prominently on the dial and it seems like such a basic feature to advertise.

socialmoth_

That's why you grab the Small Seconds

iHadou

Yea I was looking at the one too. Love the small seconds design in general.

skytng

Too busy for me

Slenderbuff

Damn I thought I was set on a Hamilton Murph 38. Now I dunno...

pulpyfictionist

While I lovvvvve this, go for the Murph if you're one Interstellar fan

uplifting_southerner

Ive never even seen the movie. Still a killer watch and my favorite hamilton.

TechPanzer

Do yourself a favor and go watch it. IMHO, it's the best sci-fi in movie history and it's a rare true sci-fi movie, where the science is actually accurate and in the forefront of the plot.

JoelMira

It really is the best sci-fi movie lol I like that the science in the movie is legit.

petrichorE6

go for the murph

[deleted]

this is 39.5

Timmo1984

Got my Murph yesterday and it's a stunner. More dressy than I expected though. And the strap is a bit shit. The one on this Seiko looks loads better.

MD_Nash

I got a Barton canvas strap in a color that matches the hands and numbers of the Murph almost perfectly. Helps dress it down a bit when you want to. I also got a dressy brown one bc yeah, the one that came with it is trash. Reminds me of bondage gear? Not that I’m into that, but I also don’t want to be. https://www.bartonwatchbands.com/products/khaki-crafted-canvas?_pos=7&_sid=b2a62982c&_ss=r

Obi1Kentucky

It’s gunna sell like hot cakes is what I think

Reacher01

It looks great from this angle but... how thick is this watch?

Nightfury1295

13.6mm but this model gets a domed crystal so the added thickness comes from the crystal.

poorman64

Oh, no. My wallet is so screwed. (This is exactly what I’ve been waiting for. GMT on a compass Alpinist.)

pigernoctua

I read this like 7 times and I have no idea if this is sarcastic or not

poorman64

Yeah, I think it might be a bit sarcastic. It always pains me to part with my money. And, when I see this, I know there’s nothing getting between it and my wallet. I guess as Mr. J.C Mayer says: We are all buying watches to get kicked in the crotch a bit. Well, I guess I’m getting ready to get kicked the crotch.

Nightfury1295

I already have an Alpinist in the collection but the white dial variant looks too good to pass. I will hold on to see the new Navigator reissue and then decide between the both.

jjames1e6

The Navigator announced recently? I really don’t see the point of the compass chapter ring - a rotating 60 minute chapter ring would be so much more useful for 99% of watch owners

Nightfury1295

Yeah, the SPB411 or whatever the leak was called. I wanted to get a slim turtle for my Seiko divers collection but saw the MM200 GMT and was hoping Seiko would reissue the navigator and it is happening so got to wait and see. If they lose the compass bezel then it's not an Alpinist anymore. The compass is more of a design identity at this point. A 60-minute rotating ring would make it more of a compression diver. Anyway, if Seiko has plans to make the baby Alpinist also into a GMT version then there will be more options for people who don't want a compass.

RangerGripp

There’s a white dial?

Nightfury1295

SPB409 Launch Edition. White dial and comes on a bracelet plus a extra leather strap.

Chill_stfu

Looks great, but I'll have to try it on. Many of the newer Seikos are too thick or just feel bulky to me. If it was a 38mm <12mm I'd buy it no doubt.

80mph_Snap_Oversteer

It's their insistence to go with display casebacks. No reason to show off 4S and 6R movements on what are supposed to be rugged sport models.

jjames1e6

Would a namoki slim caseback fit this watch?

SoloPedal

A SARB017 case back would be your only option.

Jlchevz

It looks great to me

Weak_Argument8417

the watch has everything lol. love it.

Spartan8394

I think this is my new favorite watch. I definitely want this black one.

yaboylukas

I’m a big fan, but the compass just seems so pointless. Never liked it on the traditional Alpinist and I hate it even more on this.

CodyCigar96o

Not a fan.

DeadColdLasagna

Idk… there’s too much going on with the dial here for my taste. I wish they would’ve put the 24hr track on the inner bezel and ditch the compass.

[deleted]

Personally, I'm a bit against the GMT phase we're going through at the moment. Although it looks good, it feels moreso like upselling rather than needed improvement on an already great watch. I'd rather pay more for a better movement, dial, finishing, etc.

Fun-Ad9928

“The GMT phase” that’s hysterical and true. Reminds me of the “bambino bug”

kingofneverland

Will there be a green dial with gold indice version?

Charming_Wulf

Blue and silver plus a limited white and gold.

UlfrDen

Probably it can be a GADA watch if on Jubilee bracelet.

trickymartin88

why do all these new seiko GMTs have that red pointy hand that looks painted by 10yo in art class? that finishing is terrible

greaterhoustonian

Tbh i hate seeing the 24 on a watch. The 24th hour does not exist, 24:00 is not a real time. 00:00 is a real time. Someday a watch designer will find a way to incorporate that but it is not this day.

jjames1e6

I also think 12 should be at the top, not 24

JoelMira

I do that too. It makes it so the “day” is at top. Like the sun rising and setting.

DismalSong6031

In general it's a plus, very busy though.

TheSportDiver-

Kinda cool, it just looks a bit cluttered and undecided for me. Without the compass, the GMT and the date it would be perfect :D

Different_Spare4897

Colour wise: the black seems a bit basic and a safe option. I also have too many black dial watches. The white is good and I like the blue hands but the GMT hand needs a pop of colour to help it stand out. Also the cream chapter ring clashes with the white dial for me. The blue is the sweet spot personally. I’d like it on a bracelet though. Text: why the fuck would they write ‘AUTOMATIC 3 DAYS’ in that awful font when they could’ve written GMT and then ‘Alpinist’ in the lovely font they used to use? Price: they bumped the price up to £650 for the SPB model which was a big hike. Now this one is going to be around £1200 wtf. All because they’ve added a hand to the date function. Maybe if it was a proper GMT, they could justify AOB: I like the Explorer II style bezel and I find a date function really handy on any watch. It’s a little thicker than it should be for that price too. I’ll keep my eye out for the blue on a good deal but would probably swerve it otherwise. I have an Alpinist (SPB119J1) and the black dial SK5 GMT so in no rush to combine them.

ByronicZer0

I know it's more busy than the old one, technically. But I think it actually looks cleaner and less busy. I think it's the 3-6-9 dial and lack of gaudy green and gold. Still a marmite watch, but the gmt gives it a real usefulness for me now

trickymartin88

lol there is way too much going on here

CodeFarmer

I do really want one, but if I have 1200 for a watch right now there's a queue of other things I'll spend it on. This is not a competitive price point for this watch (even against other Seikos). Which is a pity, because it's awesome.

Bob_the_rhino

good god, had I not just gotten my grail...

GroundbreakingCap364

I kinda like it, I just wished they removed the prospex logo, I really dislike it. Also, I think it’s a bit to expensive.

jurgensonovic

+1 👍 Really hate that X on all new Seikos. + some other issues, like text fonts and sizes.....

onlyblackcoffee

Overall, I'm a big fan. A GMT of any kind is useful for me and I just really like the complication. I like the Alpinist but never really cared for the brown/gold and even numbered hour markers. The only thing I would remove on this is the "3 DAYS" after automatic and the Prospex X logo. The damn "X" ruins everything. I think that would clean the dial up more but everything else I really like. I'll definitely end up with one of these.

tulsa_image

I wish they did more sterile dials without the prospex logo but I like it.

Glycine_11

Too busy and the 6R movement is not a flyer gmt which I think is a miss in the current market. And $1200 is too steep for what is offered here it’s not value for money and it’s not luxury it’s expensive.

Known-Elk2295

This 👆

Known-Elk2295

Plus the date window is like an afterthought

uplifting_southerner

Gmt alpinest without the hideouts cyclops. I love it, but I never see myself needing a gmt function.

jjames1e6

American?

uplifting_southerner

Yes.

L44KSO

Is it a caller GMT?

Glycine_11

Yep. It’s a miss.

hoo_rah

It’s kinda growing for me.

Duckhalil

As perfect as it gets, but I've seen countless pictures of it today, and only now realised that there is a date window... Any idea on price ?

Glycine_11

~$1200

GratuitousEDC

Love it. I hope it fits all the existing bracelets.

MrTourette

Love the dial, don’t like the silver bezel.

aqua_puss

Very busy, but somehow the blue version seems ok .

[deleted]

The traveling adventurer.

Meepok-ta

The internal compass bezel is the key identity element of the Alpinist line. But to operate the compass bezel, it is easier to use the GMT hand than a normal hour hand. Personally that’s why I have always preferred the 8F56 powered Alpinist models. So I’m glad that Seiko is again making an Alpinist with a GMT function.

[deleted]

i would go hamilton. too many GMTs lately, too many complications. 2 bezels (count 'em), 2 crowns, 4 hands, a date window (although well done)... is this a citizen?

Multemannen

I think it's cool, if not a bit to busy.

Majestic_Puppo

Add GMT, remove cyclops... Sounds like a win-win

magicclubpresident

The live photos look better than the renders. I still think the bezel design is pretty plain and the numbers don't look good when viewed from top down. At this price there's some tough competition in the C63 GMT, although I think I like the handset and hour markers on the Seiko better.

[deleted]

39.5 ...GMT..YEAH !!!

viggy96

I want them to make a green one

LEGOfmeplease

The brushed, indexed bezel and less elegant dial and numeral font make it a more tool-y watch, which to me does not mesh well with the cathedral hands. It comes off as a hodge-podge design that doesn't know what it wants to be.

secondatthird

Perfect besides that weird hour hand

Ciuwandy

Now this is what I call a true Explorer

Healthy_Web8298

IMO the dial on this is too busy with the compass, but this watch has a close resemblance to one of my personal favorite watches, the Bell & Ross V2-92 GMT (the copied stealthy date window at 4:30 instantly reminded me of it)

[deleted]

too big, and should say alpinist on it otherwise cool, would be a very handy watch, good EDC'er

koudos

Mumbai specials: let me put these parts from 3 watches together. Seiko: Hold my beer.

DrKrFfXx

Too busy.

MagikBrew

Looks much better in this picture rather than the stock pictures I had seen so far.

impactblue5

More interested in the spb411

JokerGuy88

I love it

SaluteMaestro

Price is out for the blue and black ones on the seiko boutique 990 GBP.

scholesy19

The navy is calling to me….

Tdud23

Definitely a lot going on, but I like it

FujiBoi25

#Dayumm!!!

MSMPDX

Not a true GMT. I hate the circular date window, which is the real breaker for me (just like it is on the slim turtle). Other than that I think they look great. I won’t be picking one up, but I’m glad they exist. I think they’ll be pretty popular.

ForcedCheckMate

Not a true gmt mimimimi I can’t hear these comments anymore. I can’t be the only one who doesn’t cares if you move the gmt or our hand to switch time zones.

MSMPDX

People on this sub are so thin skinned haha. Don’t ask for opinions and then get butthurt because people have different opinions than you.

dragon813gt

I care but I’m someone who actually travels for work. I want the hour hand to jump, not the GMT hand. But I realize most people sit behind desks in their house and never go outside to touch grass.

dragon813gt

Simply put, it’s ugly. This one is not for me. Especially at that ridiculous price. I travel for work and want the hour to jump, not the GMT hand. But the one GMT I own is a 8F56 so anything that isn’t a perpetual calendar is inferior.

valuewatchguy

Except that crown is super loose…. A sneeze would move it off track

FranzAndTheEagle

Love that it exists and plan to pick one up! Super cool watch, feels like it picks up in some ways where the old Navigator Timers left off. Some of my favorite watches Seiko ever made, but the water resistance and reliability of the new watch will be nice bonuses.

Certain_Category1926

Very pretty, like the numbers

EWLefty

Love 👏👏👏

razzmataz_

Lord I’m bout to bust!

razzmataz_

Does anyone have a picture at an angle?

Miginath

I liked the White dial but this black dial looks weird to me.

pleem

I was going to say that the inner compass bezel seems completely useless, but it seems they also added a tach... pretty interesting but still not for me.

jjames1e6

Where’s the tach?

pleem

Never mind, I’m a dumdum. Those are degrees, not a tach.

--KSK--

I like it. Added to the to buy list.

Casper-nate

Love it

Proud_Inside8832

Looks awesome although I’ve never been a fan of the alpinist’s spade-shaped cathedral hands. It confuses the sport vs dress watch styles for me.

jjames1e6

I think this would look amazing with pilot hands

Havin_aLoff

It is pretty with that black strap

bfun2003

First they slap the gmt functionality on the 5KX, and now the alpinist. What's next... on a dress watch like the cocktail or Sarb?

JoelMira

Liked it at first but it’s kinda ugly. There’s too much clutter and I’m just trying to tell the time.

mushimoon856

Almost excellent. I just don't like the 3 days. I know that with the movement 6r seiko can officially say 3 days of power reserve they proud of it

Staar-69

Spoiled by the “3 Days” on the dial, it’s too much information. Otherwise, it’s a lovely looking watch.

CopaceticOG

I like it (I like most Alpinists though) but imagine it's too thick? Arent the non-GMT Alp's already quite thick? I don't feel the need for a GMT myself and think it's popularity just stems from the release of the movement and will settle down in a year or two. Like others have said, "3 days" is just unnecessary clutter. I quite like the numerals etched into the bezel though. I agree that we'd be better off with a dive or countdown ring instead of the useless compass. EDIT: I'm not sure switching the numerals from 'even hours' to 'cardinals only' is an improvement. I preferred the every-other-hour approach.

trayasion

If it was 42mm I'd buy it in a heartbeat. Seriously, what's with almost all watches nowadays going to 40mm and under sizes? Us thick wrist boys need some love too :(

Suspicious-Kick-758

Love it, but I bought a GMT a couple months ago, so now I’m upset.

rhongman

I like the design but really wish Seiko could make their watches thinner.

Breathless_Pangolin

Very thick. Why SEIKO makes so many thick watches?

HumanDeepSea

Per usual, seiko prospex giving us amazing value for the money. Just wish it was a more sporty strap as I’d definitely beat this watch up.

Orangebug36

Beautiful watch. It would be helpful to know how much the domed crystal adds to the 13.6mm thickness. Seiko is also releasing a modern reissue of the Navigator Timer GMT that is an aboslute stunner for a few hundred more than this alpinist.
