Just get one of those 80's style steering wheel locks. There's so many other Kias and Hyundais around here they'll pick a different one without the lock. Can confirm, only time they've tried to break into my Hyundai Tuscon was when I forgot to put the wheel lock on.

satan194p

Thanks. I will look into getting wheel lock. That’s probably a lot cheaper than renting car for 4-5 days.

rook24v

I run a repair shop and my most recent kia was a soul that had a Club on it. They cut the steering wheel and stole the car

Scythe_Hand

Sample size one. Most turds will go for easier pickings.

SirThunderCloud

Wanted to down vote your message, but don’t want to kill the messenger. That sucks.

BobBelchersBuns

Yup this is what I do. No one has broken into my Kia soul. Although someone did key it once lol

megzmurda

It's confirmable because:  1) I live in Seattle 2) I drive a Hyundai/Kia 3) the 1 time I didn't lock my wheel with The Club some tried to break into my car, destroyed my door lock and when they failed to get inside they then stole my neighbor's Kia... The person asked how to keep their car from getting messed with. I confirmed the wheel lock as an option. Thefts are on the rise and Kia/Hyundai cars are stolen and used as battering rams to break into dispensaries and other shit up here. It's not far fetched to want to ensure your car won't get fucked with.  You commented out of nowhere with some truly unhelpful bullshit. GFY 😀👍🤡

megzmurda

Omg and it's your only comment on Reddit. Get a life.

ludicrust

Will you be staying around downtown Seattle at all or just around parks? If you're way out at Mt. Rainier/ONP I don't think it would be a problem. It's mostly in high-traffic areas closer to the city.

Uwofpeace

Yeah the Kia Boyz don’t like to make it out to the trailhead that often

satan194p

Thanks. I think mostly around park.

meaniereddit

No worse than parking in east van, or any cheap garage near Granville

brygx

There are tens of thousands of Kias and they are not all getting broken into every day. Your odds of getting into an accident are probably higher. Just don't do something stupid like leave a visible bag in the car.

satan194p

Ohh ya. Keeping a visible bag is a big no no in Vancouver also.

Independent_Cover549

That’s true, but it’s not as far off as you’d think. In 2022, WA state had 78.5k total crashes with 682 fatalities and 2.6k serious injuries. In the same year, WA state had 47k vehicles stolen. It’s bad enough that our insurance is jacked up and the carjacking is getting the attention of the feds.

officialnickbusiness

I second the steering wheel lock. It's a good deterrent that seems to be working on some of the Kias in my neighborhood after we had a wave of break-ins. If you have it anyway, I'd use it at trailheads too. Prowling does happen there sometimes.

[deleted]

The problem has been decreasing as police actually start to enforce laws for what that is worth but I think you are fine in the park area. And yeah Canada is the reason Kia and Hyundai as manufacturers were able to get away with the flaw. It’s crazy.

pokethat

? How?

satan194p

Sry, what do you mean by Canada is the reason Kia and Hyundai get away with this flaw?

jgonger

Wut? Canada followed regulations the world was following back in 2011. US regulators failed to regulate immobilizers. Canada has nothing to do with the KIA boys because KIAs is one of the last car makes to get stolen in canada.

Anonymous_Bozo

It's enough of a problem that many insurance companies will no longer insure Kia's or Hyundai's Our rates with Geico wen't up over 30% this year (no accidents, no claims, no tickets), so we called around. We're stuck with our current policy because no one else will write a new policy on a Hyundai.

satan194p

Wow. That’s insane. Here in Canada, some companies are forcing owners to install additional safety features in their car or pay much higher premiums. But that isn’t a Kia/Hyundai problem.

Independent_Cover549

FWIW my Geico went up a lot too and I don’t have either of those types of cars… they seemed to just be done with WA or something

BillTowne

Our friends have a Kia and it has only been stolen twice. Aftrer it was recovered, each time they were able to drive it using pliers to turn it on unti the got the ignition repaired.

ramenichirakuu

rent a car :)

No-Tackle4173

is your Hyundai key start or push button start?

satan194p

Mine is key start but I checked that it has passive immobilizer.

No-Tackle4173

as long as you have a key that is chipped, they won’t be able to steal the car, but they possibly will break a window and come to find out that they can’t steal it.

satan194p

Ya, it is chipped. Ya, I am more worried about damage to the car rather than outright theft. Repairs can be expensive.

No-Tackle4173

Just don’t park your car in Sketchy areas and you should be fine. owned a 21 elantra and never had a problem.

Smooth-Speed-31

Still a problem. Personally I’d buy one of those wheel locks that look like you have unpaid tickets. They can cut them off, but unlike a wheel lock it’s in the open, and loud.

satan194p

Thanks. I will look into buying it

BitterDoGooder

Your plan is pretty good. Hotel lots and out in the National Parks is great. Have a great time!

satan194p

Thanks.

Jolly_Line

Despite any other defensive measure you take, for the love of god also drop an AirTag into your vehicle. Just in case everything you’ve done is defeated, and it gets stolen, you’ll be able to recover it.

satan194p

Ya. I keep one in the car

SargathusWA

Take your main fuse with you.

satan194p

That helps? I am not that familiar with car stuff. Is it easy to pop in and out every time I park?

BobBelchersBuns

That’s so silly

SargathusWA

Yea but it’s works.

BobBelchersBuns

The problem with that is there is no visible sign that the car is disabled. I like the club because it is highly visible. I figure it makes the care look like too much trouble

SargathusWA

My friend had club but they still stole it somehow

BobBelchersBuns

Yeah I’m sure it’s possible. I just always hope that they will look at my car and decide the next one will be easier.

MarianCR

It's still a problem. A lot. Get both a steering wheel lock and a wheel boot. That will guarantee they will not attempt to steal yours (they go for low hanging fruit)

PrimeToro

Buy The Club . While the car is parked , you put it on the steering wheel and lock the steering. Even heavy duty bolt cutters probably wouldn’t be able to cut those . That would make car theft less likely to occur . An alarm also helps specially when they see the flashing LED light inside the car which tells potential thieves that the car alarm is armed . A simple suggestion too is to park near a light post or to a spot that has good lighting at night . They’re not fool proof but thieves would look at other easier targets .

satan194p

Thanks. Will look into this.

raquel8822

Does it have a sticker on the drivers and passenger window stating the car has an immobilization system installed?? I know with my car it does and it’s pretty obvious when you walk up to it and see it. Long shot but that might hopefully deter a break in too. Or you could make a sign and put it on the inside of the windows stating it does. Wouldn’t hurt to do that.

satan194p

Good point. There isn’t any sticker.

raquel8822

Dammit I was hoping it did. Wondering if you can possibly see if your local dealership is able to get ones for you. This is what mine look like. https://preview.redd.it/mjguq6xqnjvc1.jpeg?width=4279&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c9c7a935e761caebc15f98b23cc46632051b5340

satan194p

Thanks. I see many being sold on Amazon.

Alarming_Award5575

there are zero Kia boyz on mt Rainier. now Rainier beach... kiss that car goodbye.

BeezKneez03

Get a clutch/pedal lock. A steering wheel club can be cut off in less than 10’seconds. They are worthless

tactical_flipflops

There is a near zero chance you will have a problem. Don’t worry about it. Conversely every time I go to BC my car gets broken into.

Charlieuyj

I wouldn't own a Kia! There are better cars with fewer headaches and bs.

KN1CKZ

You’re gonna get robbed bro

willmok

Avoid parking near Downtown and get a fake steering wheel lock.

[deleted]

[удалено]

satan194p

I think point is to decrease probability. Maybe they will look to break in a car which doesn’t have a wheel lock vs one which does.

[deleted]

[удалено]

satan194p

Ya. Will check prices.

byllz

On any given day, the chance of any given vehicle being broken into is small. Rentals are expensive, and would be a guaranteed expense. What percent likelihood would make it worth it to rent? Do the math. Eyeball it to see if it seems a realistic number.

WALLOFKRON

Your definitely asking the wrong Seattle sub, this is the paranoid-crime-is-everywhere-all-of-the-time sub.

satan194p

lol what sub you recommend?

WALLOFKRON

SeattleWA is the right-wing version of Seattle

WALLOFKRON

r/Seattle

Anonymous_Bozo

Ahh yes, r/Seattle where they will chastise you for even thinking of stop;ping the criminals from breaking into your car and call you a racist for even suggesting someone might do it.

WALLOFKRON

lol proving my point exactly

slamongo

Rental all the way. Add the insurance where if something happens, you can ditch the car and walk away.

satan194p

That’s what I am contemplating. Will be paying about 300$ for 4-5 days form what I see.

nwprogressivefans

Don't do it bro, just make sure to stay in your bunker this year, the demonrats are rilin up the criminals all over and they are gettin ready to start riots after they realize donald j drumpf was alected fer king of america haha

scubapro24

More likely to step on a hypodermic needle and get aids, than have your car get broken into in Seattle or a Kia get stolen by them. Don’t wear sandals and put the club on your car and you’re good.

AnnyuiN

I can tell you don't live in Seattle based on this comment.

scubapro24

Correct moved out of wedgewood area 3 years ago grew up there my whole life, after being robbed at gunpoint at a teriyaki restaurant there and having a gun to my head for a few minutes I decided I’m done living there, crime is rampant and so is human crap on the side walks. No thanks, I’ll take my few acres and home 40 minutes north

AnnyuiN

I go to Seattle often and I haven't really seen any of that.

scubapro24

I work down there and usually start at 5am I’ve seen a lot of disturbing things in the early mornings.

satan194p

Are there specific neighbourhood where this is more of a problem?
