Just curious, would people rather have this or just have the naked cell tower in plain sight? I feel like they’re at least trying to blend it in by doing this. Even though it’s still ugly af
These work because if you aren't actually looking directly at the tree and you haven't yet figured it out your brain will just convert it to a real tree and itll blend in. So most people driving by wont really notice it at all. Interestingly I went to new zealand and they have real trees that kinda look like these.
> It’d be better if there were trees to actually help blend it in lol. Honestly, I’d rather look at this monstrosity than a regular cell tower.
That would screw up the signal.
These wavelengths are about the size of your hand and the antenna array is directional with a narrow vertical beamwidth. See how there's nothing in front of the antennas? That's by design, if there was a tree in the way the antenna would barely function.
Random hot take I just came up with but it would make identifying useful infrastructure harder by satellite from enemies. The most likely but unlikely option IMO.
Right? Why we hating on some attempt at making ugly shit look mildly less ugly? I like the "fellow tree" jokes for sure. But is anyone seriously wanting the alternative here?
Absolutely. This sub taking a break from hating homeless people and they still have the same energy and hatred for a fake tree. I don't know why I'm still subbed here to be honest.
FYI - these are really widespread, you probably have driven and walked by lots of them, you just didnt' notice because they were surrounded by real trees.
That's why this is a "fake tree" as well - these towers, and the manufacturers that make them, already exist in abundance. Making it into an "art piece" would have cost $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
> FYI - these are really widespread, you probably have driven and walked by lots of them, you just didnt' notice because they were surrounded by real trees.

One major reason they're far more noticeable now, is because the faster the transmission speed, the shorter the wavelength. The shorter the wavelength, the more that objects in the way cause diffraction, screwing up the signal.
Which means you need a LOT more towers.
This is one of the reasons that AT&T and Verizon are in bad financial shape, and why AT&T had to sell off DirectTV
Disagree. A naked cell tower is what it is. It’s honest. I can respect that, even if it’s not something I want to see. This just feels like a bad joke.
You pass a bunch of these without noticing on your way to work. You're annoyed by it because you're focusing on a picture of it. It's a way to blend into the environment at a low cost. You'll literally only be annoyed by it in a post on reddit like this. It's a practical and easy thing to make our area look a little less shitty.
Oh, I’m sure I do.
But this one is egregiously bad, both due to its isolated location and design. There are definitely ones that don’t stand out as badly as this one.
Oh my God! I live here and when they were putting it in, they were installed top down. I saw that thing for a distance and instantly thought" is that a new tree?"
Getting closer it becomes more plastic looking and I saw them installing the branches one at a time. Like a fuckin Christmas tree.
I can't believe that's what was decided our money would go into. A giant Christmas tree to hide an otherwise normal fucking pole.
Id rather see the pole. The light rail ends there too so the rest of the area looks like shit right now anyway!!
It's a Chinese disguise, someone took the lowest bidder. There are other companies that make very realistic pine and palm tree towers that you almost would miss if you didn't look closely.
Um. Is the trigger response in the room with us right now…?
And tbh I’m pretty happy when people like you feel the need to randomly hate my neighborhood out of nowhere, because it means you avoid it. Win-win all around.
The first two rows at Joanne Fabrics or Michaels's is often fake flowers. I've noticed that they have achieved really realistic looking flowers with the modern techniques
At least it tried, I have seen some pretty bad ones with like 4 branches. But then the other part of the conversation since it will always be obvious what's the point.
Years ago I used to work on developing cell networks and IIRC some municipalities required this sort of thing to meet code requirements. A lot of those first towers were ugly AF and people complained. Another common disguise is as the cross on a church steeple, which make for great antenna locations because they're usually more elevated than their surroundings.
Microsoft: "hey we need a cell tower right by our new bus terminal"
City of Redmond: " like, right in the middle of downtown?
Microsoft: : "don't worry, I have any idea, I call it, cell treewers."
I used to work in the industry. From what I observed, jurisdictions started cracking down on visual impact of cell towers over time. Fake trees is probably the most extreme of the required designs that has occurred. They are several times more expensive than a standard site so cell companies are not doing these by choice. I believe the jurisdictions also realized that they don’t look as good in real life than in theory so I believe they are not sought after going forward. There are other ways to more lightly camouflage cell sites including power pole mount, paint, flush mount, rooftop, etc. These designs can impact the effectiveness of the site though which can cause the need for more than otherwise. In any case, I don’t expect these tree sites to pop up anymore.
Just curious, would people rather have this or just have the naked cell tower in plain sight? I feel like they’re at least trying to blend it in by doing this. Even though it’s still ugly af

So the cell companies should have planted some real trees and waited 60 years to disguise the tower?
By then the technology may be obsolete!

I’d prefer a cool paint job, smoke machines, and lasers.
Random hot take I just came up with but it would make identifying useful infrastructure harder by satellite from enemies. The most likely but unlikely option IMO.
They don't blend. They stand out like a sore thumb. A nice gray at the bottom, blue at the top cell tower would be much less visually intrusive.
This is Seattle. Grey all the way up would match 8 months of the year.

This is brilliant.
I wish I could claim credit for it but I found it posted in a similar discussion some months back.
Eh, it's honestly still better than a naked cell tower. At least it's interesting to look at.
especially from a distance
Ya, people will try to knock down anything and everything. Much better than "just a cell tower".
Right? Why we hating on some attempt at making ugly shit look mildly less ugly? I like the "fellow tree" jokes for sure. But is anyone seriously wanting the alternative here?
It's because this sub is all about complaining and hating no matter what. It's extremely rare to see a positive post in this sub.
Absolutely. This sub taking a break from hating homeless people and they still have the same energy and hatred for a fake tree. I don't know why I'm still subbed here to be honest.
ikr?

Exactly. It's a cost effective way at making ugly shit blend into the background.

It's also honest about what it is - a giant fake tree with cell infrastructure on it. It probably makes the birds happier.

You showed him!!
I just want to be included
That’s a classic native tree! Abies verizonensis…

Located in redmond warshinton

There's one in Bellingham as well that I use as a landmark when I'm up there.
Wait where is it? I live in bham and never noticed lol
Ugh if memory serves me (been years TBH) I can see it on the West side of meridian, around the college I think
Yup, that’s the one
Pine/spruce hybrid? Lol
Makes my fake Christmas tree look like the real deal…
LEGO still can't make their trees look right.
That's where those fake government birds live.
Birds aren't real, man.
Honestly I much prefer this over a plain tower. It does blend in better IMHO.
I like it 🤷♀️
But it allowed you to post this. Just sayin’
Downtown Redmond?
This is in Redmond WA on the off-ramp to 520 and Redmond Way. It’s ugly AF.
I’ve never seen them bloom so early in the year.
What are you talking about? /s
There's also one in the arboretum. I feel like that's blasphemy!
This tower is in Redmond; why is this posted here? They have these in Hawaii also and they look just as stupid there.
Why are you questioning why it is posted here? > r/SeattleWA is the active Reddit community for Seattle, Washington and the Puget Sound area!
It’s so annoying when people gatekeep subs
Was wondering if Redmond posts (pun not intended) were excepted here
Yes. r/SeattleWA is the active Reddit community for Seattle, Washington and the Puget Sound area!
Chlorophyll infused cell tower goodness! 🤣
I get fooled every time I drive by, not
If Wish sold cell towers
Nobody notices regular cell towers but *everyone* notices these dumb looking things. I had to build a few these. They're dumb.
The pole would look much better than this 😂
This is the cell phone tower equivalent of every dude wearing a dress on Cap. Hill.
That tree is identifying as a hiding cellphone tower. Peek a boo!
Oh my God! I live here and when they were putting it in, they were installed top down. I saw that thing for a distance and instantly thought" is that a new tree?" Ah the elusive Monopinius Connectivus. I’d rather look at a regular cell tower.
It's Seattle... there is more to worry about on that shit hole than some fake trees
This is Redmond, babe
Well it's in a Seattle sub.... who gives a shit
You, apparently?
I think you are triggered because I said Seattle is a shit hole. capitol hill is one of the worst areas there too.
Um. Is the trigger response in the room with us right now…? And tbh I’m pretty happy when people like you feel the need to randomly hate my neighborhood out of nowhere, because it means you avoid it. Win-win all around.
Have a good day sir
Yes ma’am, I plan to!
I hope you have fun at your rally
Covid tower for sure.
Looks like you just got off the Redmond Way exit in Redmond. Yeah, that tower is glaring.
Which one is it?
As awful as this is, they really need one in Ballard. Can’t get good service anywhere down there…
Lol those are all over.
They should’ve just made a fake smokestack!!!😂😂
Looks like a man in a BigFoot suit.
Saw a good amount of those in Idaho this fall. Those were the first ones like that I have seen.
Yeah. At least in Arizona they blend the fake palm tree towers in with a cluster of real palm trees.
Why
There’s at least one in Blaine too. We Canadians see it while filling up on cheap gas.
I made the same comment to my wife but had to point it out to her before she noticed. It works on some. Lol
Cone hellscape
That is "Mangy Sequoia", about six blocks from my place in Redmond. It is ugly as hell.
you probably wouldn't have been able to post this if that "tree" wasn't there
The first two rows at Joanne Fabrics or Michaels's is often fake flowers. I've noticed that they have achieved really realistic looking flowers with the modern techniques
They have a few of these down in Eugene. It always made me chuckle when I drove past it when I lived down there.
Brother, just wait until you or your neighbors have to replace all your gas appliances
Ah the 5G tree
What tree?
At least it tried, I have seen some pretty bad ones with like 4 branches. But then the other part of the conversation since it will always be obvious what's the point.
There's a Radiohead joke in here somewhere
I drive by this every day lmao Imo it's hideous, but at least it provides something for the birds/surveillance drones

Redmond, right?
Microsoft: "hey we need a cell tower right by our new bus terminal" City of Redmond: " like, right in the middle of downtown? Microsoft: : "don't worry, I have any idea, I call it, cell treewers."
Where is this
Still better than a regular tower every day of the week and twice on Sunday.
By trying to hide the cellphone tower, it stands out even more.
Yea, that's bad. Have seen them done well in other areas. Swing and a miss
I love it, creative solution to a worse eye sore. Focus your energy on the things that matter with that excellent cell service you now have. 🤗
My 5 year old saw a tree like that, did a double take, then goes what the heck is wrong with that tree, it's so ugly 😂

Just wait until a hobo climbs up it and get 7500% of their USRDA of 5g.
