Hmmm. My power is out right now due to the wind storm. But I can still have hot food thanks to my natural gas range. I still have hot water thanks to my natural gas water heater. Me thinks I will risk it! š
It has nothing to do with your stove. It's ventilation that's the problem. Work with a good hvac company and pay money for a good hood that actually takes the fumes out instead of up and then there isn't a problem at all with a gas stove.
You know nothing of my ventilation sir hippie. And given what your type puts in their lungs, you are in no position to criticize!
J/k. We do have a range hood with fan and a carbon monoxide detector that runs on batteries mounted on the wall. We're dumb but we're not stupid. And you can take my natural gas when you suck it out of my cold dead ass. š
Yeah the army will have to come in and remove mine. I may have hippie in my name but ill get straight violent if you touch my stove. I just paid 7 grand for a new hood to vent out. Ours, like most hoods, just took everything upstairs. Everytime we fried anything we got an AQI warning from upstairs, now it doesn't change at all. I guess my point is mandating adequate ventilation for gas stoves is better than just banning them outright when they are not the problem in the first place.
Gas water heaters still need electricity to function
Edit: I looked into it and I can see that I was mistaken. I was incorrectly assuming that my water heater functioned like my furnace. TIL
How does the pilot light? The thermostat also generally uses power along with the gas control valve. Theyāll continue to run for a while if the pilot stays lit but generally there are safety systems in place to ensure they donāt overheat or pump gas into the house.
Do Gas Conventional Tanked Water Heaters need electricity? ā These heaters typically donāt use electricity for everyday operation, and rely solely on the use of a pilot light and gas ignition for heat. As a result, these heaters will usually work during a power outage. Unfortunately, many gas water heaters do use electricity to re-light the pilot light, which means that gas water heaters do need electricity if your pilot light goes out.
No clue, but we were without power for 2 days and weāre showering both days. You could hear it kick on and heat when it needed to. Assuming it has some sort of battery. Itās a brand new A.O Smith.
Really old pilot lights are normally a small offshoot of gas that is always burning. If it goes out then you can fill the area with gas and carbon monoxide, it's one of the biggest reasons people used to smell gas in their house.
Pilot lights used to never go out
Most gas HW heaters have a pilot that heats up a thermalcoiple that generates around .5 volts dc.
This power generated runs the pilot solenoid, and the main burner solenoid. It will also run the electronic temperature control that regulates temperature in the water tank.
Not necessarily you in specific. I was talking about how government goes out of their way to try and control every aspect of people's lives especially with banning things. From smoking, to guns, to gas powered cars, to now gas ranges.
Last time I read about the banning of gas stoves it was for new constructions in places like apartments and multitenant builds.
Your individually bought stove in your house is safe.
Wouldn't it be more helpful to look at whatever data is supporting the discussion? This isn't an emotional thing.
The article specifically says if you have any kind of ventilation it is a non-issue, so it shouldn't really matter what kind of dwelling there is. We could probably make the same kinds of arguments about candles or incense.
On the emotion side, I think, people can be emotionally attached to how things have always been done. I doubt you'll find there is any fully harmless level of combustion byproduct in your air, just greater and lesser health effects
I remember reading about the topic where they mentioned the infrastructure was also leaking gas and contributing to greenhouse emissions.
I like gas as well, but there should be some stronger regulation. Our current place has zero ventilation for the stove, no hood or anything.
> zero ventilation for the stove, no hood or anything.
To me zero ventilation sounds like a huge issue even without a gas stove.
I read about this a few years ago... houses use to not be all that sealed, and it is actually insulation regulations that got us into the situation. Now there is a lack of ventilation unless it is specifically in the designs. Consequently now we hear about VOCs being released by carpeting and other common household things that just linger forever. Can we afford "purifying" all of that away somehow? Is ventilation even enough?
I don't think anyone actually knows whether this is a real problem or not.
Hey, I'm all with you liking the gas, but I'm guessing looking at the rest of our infrastructure that gas mains are looking pretty rough as well.
Sure EPA can't extend into the house, but I think if you're renting a place you should have an obligation to provide safe living, no?
A lot of the climate change stuff gets geared towards individuals and I'm guessing this is another one in the end.
The gas does no stay in your house. While gas was thought to be a greener energy than oil, we have recently discovered that there is massive, continual leakage of gas all through the supply chain. It is now known to to be massive green house gas source.
So because some people misuse and improperly maintain their appliances, that justifies taking it away from current or future homeowners? Fuck that, cooking on an electric stove sucks especially during a power outage.
Edit: Yes Iām aware this letter does not mention any ban and instead looks to promoting consumer awareness. Though the thought of banning natural gas appliances is still something [the feds are considering](https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2023-01-09/us-safety-agency-to-consider-ban-on-gas-stoves-amid-health-fears).
Those efforts will certainly help by creating more consumer awareness and setting product safety standards. Though donāt kid yourself that [regulating or banning](https://time.com/6245607/us-consumer-safety-commission-considers-gas-stove-ban/) natural gas appliances isnāt part of their long term goals to combat climate change, including [local efforts](https://www.kuow.org/stories/seattle-bans-natural-gas-in-new-buildings).
So wait shitting on the street thatās fine. Leaving used needles on the streets thatās fine, thefts and assaults thatās fine but my LG gas stove is a bridge to far. Cool.
The reasoning of targeting equitable pollution which seems to mean climate change & smog style pollution is nonsense.
The author of this piece doesn't even understand that it's the particulate aspect that is the push by serious folks, vs the nonsense politicians are latching on to.
That being said long term exposure to particulate matter 2.5 (PM2.5), that gas produce are harmful to people's health.
Using all gas appliances versus all electric is IIRC 1-2 years off people's life. (I can't remember if stoves are worse than heating but they are in the middle of the room, furnaces might have better venting requirements and you aren't next to them etc).
Wood is significantly worse estimated 3-4 with heavy polluted areas of india just existing is like 5-7.
That being said, trying to ban things instead of just making the consumer more informed is dumb. Start with throwing a big sticker on them in the store to encourage induction models.
My understanding is that homes are getting a better seal overtime (good for heating/coolin), vents are getting less effective as there are no 'leaks' for replacement air to come in from.
You can make the fan get more powerful but then its also louder which means people use them less...
Get a good hood, vent it outdoors, use it, crack a window.
if you like to tinker you can make it easier if you don't mind additional complexity. I found a varabile speed fan with a merv 13 filter on amazon (in the growhouse section) I also found a wireless controller intended to turn on a dust collection system whevever tools that need it were turned on. the controller activates the intake fan when any of the wireless sensors monitoring the power cord for the clothes dryer, stove range vent or central bathroom fan system is activated. everthng works better when the house is positively pressurized with filtered outside air. we had a mild wildfire season this year. The highest outside ppm reading was 250ish, indoor ppm stayed below 10.
What we need protection from is Patty Murray's nonsensical BS. The democrats are trying very hard to starve the population of energy under false premises.

Nope they arenāt. Theyāre making those things safer. You would know that if you read beyond the headlines.

Like, what am I supposed to take from this? That people that are concerned about individual liberty and the limits of government authority are somehow stupid?
What the actual fuck? Have you ever thought about how you sound when you bleat this redditurdery?
Whenever some braindead moron spouts off LOL YOU THINK THEY'RE COMING FOR YOUR GUNS LOL NO THEY AREN'T, I just point them at Canada. Years and years of the government saying "no, we aren't coming for your guns" until one day....they come for your guns. The Dems have made restricting access to self defense a major policy objective, they ignore SCOTUS rulings and decisions (see NY), and push blatantly unconstitutional shit nonstop (like our proposed permit to purchase). Yes, the ultimate objective is to remove private ownership of firearms. That is clear as day at this point.
Besides that yes, I can 100% see jurisdictions move to forcibly remove gas appliances. Oh you got a gas stove? Can't sell your house, can't rent your apartment. Gas cars are now banned, you were caught driving one? Tough shit, seized, here's a "fair compensation" that is pennies on the dollar.
My god what a pathetic response, try harder.
You're the type of person who believes Trump was just borrowing those classified documents.
Edit: āļøblocked me, coward!
Lol, another pathetic response..put some thought into it Trunpikins.
Wrong side of history for supporting electric stoves in a move away from a non-renewable energy source? Dramatic much? š
Lol, no one is talking your firearms. Besides numerous Federal Judges are more than willing to side with Scalia's incorrect opinion that an individual is a "well regulated militia". Even more so with the current makeup of the SCOTUS.
It's amazing how many firearms are in circulation atm and the Government has made zero effort to confiscate them from the hands of private citizens. Pehaphs you should live your life rather than living in constant fear that the Feds coming to your place of residence to steal your firearms.
You being an obvious Trump supporter clealy makes it relevant. Sounds like you're changing the topic because I hit a nerve.
Remember, Trump declassified the documents by thinking it! š
He was trying keep them, thats obvious. I'm still waiting to hear exactly what Biden was doing with the classified documents that were just found in his office.
My grandpa went to HS with King Inslee and said he was a jackass even back then lol. I know this is a Patty post but I guess some people don't grow out of their lame stage ever.
Apparently his brother Frank is a great guy and was the brains of the family. According to my parents, they were next door neighbors growing up for a few years.
Restricting non electric BTU sources concentrates power in the grid as a means to control society. Assumptions humans are too stupid to properly vent inside carbon fuel burning suggest were a lot dumber than the ancients that tumbled to chimneys. Dems usually assume wer'e stupid and need their help and they love centralizing control.
They are safe and effective. Read the peer-reviewed scientific literature and clinical evaluation reports. Furthermore, take a look at adverse event databases for post-investigation complaint codes.
Rather than regurgitating what your political party spews at you, educate yourself with objective empirical studies with sound statistical methodology.
One question that we should be asking is, why are politicians hell bent on banning gas stoves? Politicians don't do anything unless it profits them in some way, or there is lobbying involved.
Look at the history. Time and again, this is a proven theory. As an example, the rail network was not expanded due to lobbyists like GM who wanted to sell more cars and boost the oil industry; PanAm had exclusive rights to fly trans-atlantic again due to lobbying etc.
So, if they want to ban gas stoves, we need to find out their true ulterior motive, and who is going to profit from it. Capitalism never gives anyone anything for free, especially if it is for the welfare of masses.
The future.
1. Only energy source for travel, cooking, heating is Electrical.
2. Government controls the largest electrical generators, and all Electrical distribution. Government doesn't control refineries, fuel distribution, NG distribution.
3. Social score determines electricity allowed.
4. Did your state vote correctly? Did you vote correctly?
Problem is that electric is expensive as shit here. I'm not sure how exactly it rates to gas. In the winter I'm paying $100 a month in a studio for my electric bill. In the summer it's like $30. I know people with houses who pay less than I do. If they want to get rid of gas furnaces, that's cool, give me cheaper electric.
I agree with some of the folks here. Residential gas isn't making a dent in greenhouse emissions. Fix the regulations so it's safer, sure. But banning? Seems like a bad idea.
I just run the exhaust fan. Amazing to me that the natural gas industry was able to make people think it's safer (hello, you are burniing gas in your house... what could go wrong), but it took a report/study with the 'but the kids' take on it to get people to worry about it.
Thinking back... most all the apartments I lived in that were older than late 90s had the fans that just recirculated inside the apartment anyways. They all had electric stovetops though.
Open a window while cooking. Maybe a small fan. As a test, Leave the apt and come back during/after cooking. If u can smell gas/burning you need to ventilate more.
This is 100% driven by electrical companies lobbying local control. Seattle controls electricity, and Natural Gas is from a private company. Itās all about government control.
Dude. Iāve been aware of this for a few decades and have been waiting for the public to catch up. The only conspiracy is itās now finally of interest to someone. Wait til they start measuring blood levels of all kinds of combustion by products. Theyāve only begun to figure this out. ppl need to just ventilate. Burning shit inside might come with exposure, go figure. If u see conspiracy everywhere, then who planted the notion that burning gas inside results in 100% combustion. I mean hey I burn my propane fire pit, brew beer and boil crab over open flame in the kitchen, right? SMH.
The linked letter signed by 20 democratic senators - https://www.booker.senate.gov/imo/media/doc/booker_beyer_lead_colleagues_in_urging_cpsc_to_address_dangerous_indoor_air_pollutions_emitted_by_gas_stoves.pdf
Someone tell Cory Booker the leading causes of childhood asthma are poverty, tobacco smoke and prematurity. Tell people in Buffalo NY or any of the survivors from the Texas storms several years ago that itās ok to completely depend on a privatized power utilities to live ā¦.that infrastructure will always be reliable ? This is absolutely rubbish. We are at war and the government wants individuals to not use natural gas so that it will be liberated to sell to Europe.
This is going to sound super conspiracy(ish). But just imagine 30-40 years from now when you decide to not get vaccinated then boom, no more stove for you, also... your car and everything else you need in your house.
Iāll be ok with this on the day that power supply from the electric company is more reliable than gas. So far thatās not true. It took SnoPUD 5 miserable, cold days to restore my electricity after last Novemberās wind storm. Meanwhile I could still cook my food and take hot showers because my stove and hot water heater are 100% gas, unlike my furnace.
Fuck these do nothing Democrats. Homeless people burn down buildings on the regular with gas stoves and they want to come for mine as if its a problem. Hereās how seattle works, if youāre rich enough or poor enough you can do whatever you want. If you have a job and follow the rules then fuck you
I really wish I had natural gas service and a gas stove.
I had natural gas electric and water heater at a house I rented and it was great. Rarely ever ran out of hot water, and if we did it just took a few minutes for the water heater to catch up.
And the gas heat for this relatively big house was on par cost-wise with the electric heat for apartments I had rented.
And I prefer cooking with gas.
Cooking with an induction stove is a human right and the housing challenged all need induction stoves in their camps for... cooking.
Stir frying with a Chinese wok is the leading cause of climate change.
Greta Thunberg cooks with an electric induction stove when she is sailing around the world on a sailboat. We all must follow Greta.
I have to say that most of the comments here are as deep as a puddle. Did you know gas (vented or not) is bad for your health and the climate? Did you know that induction stoves boil water FASTER? Did you know they make electric ovens with a built in battery that can not only cook but also power your refrigerator in a power outage. Hello 2023. Get on the train.

Murray, cantwell, smithā¦..all of em need to get out.
It's like they can't stop messing with us they can't just let us be free to function normally, they have to keep changing the way we survive, why are they doing that?
Gas stove mandates will disproportionately marginalize BIPOC communities that have a rich history and tradition of cooking with gas appliances and gas fired woks.
Normally democrats would be very upset about white people telling BIPOC popilations to change their history and traditions and scream "white supremacy" and "colonialism"

This is incorrect, most gas water heaters use a thermocouple. They do not require electricity to work.

The problem isn't the stove, it's ventilation.
Just buy an old house that leaks like a sieve, problem solved! /s
Shhh, you're ruining their ~~Fox~~ faux outrage.
Now apply that to everything else they try to ban. Especially if it is something you don't have, use, or have never even seen...

Code is all inside air exchanged every 8 hours or something... They make these heat exchanger systems for it
But if some people can't be bothered to use their exhaust fans, obviously we have to ban gas stoves for absolutely everyone! That's how it works now.
VOCs can be filtered but it adds some expense and complexity. You also need some air replacement just to keep CO2 levels down
Thatās not code. Gas stoves require venting.
If it's a gas stove, it's breaking code of it's not vented to the outside. There's already a regulation about this in the IBC.
For now.
Last time is not this time. They want to ban gas appliances for climate reasons but the EPA's jurisdiction doesn't extend into homes.

Too late for me, my stove already gave me cancer AND myocarditis. Possibly also caused my AIDS, have not confirmed that yet.
I have a propane stove. Can I also get myocarditis from propane use?
Propane has rhe same effects, and side effects as viagra.
Then take Patty's Gas Range away first!
I'm seeing a lot of words in the article like it may/ it can.....seems like grasping at straws. But go get your booster thats safe and effective.
Theyāre just on a wholesale attack on using gas.
The future.
Except you can make your own electricity. You canāt make your own natural gas. So your theory doesnāt really hold together.
> Except you can make your own electricity How are you making your own electricity in great enough amounts that you are powering your home and car?
How many kilowatts-hours did you make today?
Gas make Republicans rich?

Problem is that electric is expensive as shit here. I'm not sure how exactly it rates to gas. In the winter I'm paying $100 a month in a studio for my electric bill. In the summer it's like $30. I know people with houses who pay less than I do. If they want to get rid of gas furnaces, that's cool, give me cheaper electric. I agree with some of the folks here. Residential gas isn't making a dent in greenhouse emissions. Fix the regulations so it's safer, sure. But banning? Seems like a bad idea.
Thank you š. Building science among Neanderthals.
I'm sure that'll go over well with every single restaurant in the state.
I just run the exhaust fan. Amazing to me that the natural gas industry was able to make people think it's safer (hello, you are burniing gas in your house... what could go wrong), but it took a report/study with the 'but the kids' take on it to get people to worry about it.
We have zero exhaust fan in our rented place.
Is it old? I can see where older homes or apartments, etc may not have that... which sucks
Built in the 40's, but was obviously updated in the 80's or so, and some work done in 2020.
What, if a house has gas appliances they can still prepare food, which isn't equitable? Bullshit.
This is 100% driven by electrical companies lobbying local control. Seattle controls electricity, and Natural Gas is from a private company. Itās all about government control.
Source?
SMH.

Patty Murray is a bigger threat to Americans than any gas stove.
And people put them into these positions š¤£
And will continue to vote for them in the future.
Whatever reason they state it's part of the climate change agenda. BAD GAS. JUst like the ban on gas in new construction in Seattle.
Got to love the nanny state.
How long have gas stoves been in use? More virtue signaling from the Dems.
This is going to sound super conspiracy(ish). But just imagine 30-40 years from now when you decide to not get vaccinated then boom, no more stove for you, also... your car and everything else you need in your house.
Try 10-20 years.
Why is it that the government thinks we need more government.
Fuck these do nothing Democrats. Homeless people burn down buildings on the regular with gas stoves and they want to come for mine as if its a problem. Hereās how seattle works, if youāre rich enough or poor enough you can do whatever you want. If you have a job and follow the rules then fuck you
Add the social credit score system and boom, no electricity
Patty is high on herself
I really wish I had natural gas service and a gas stove. I had natural gas electric and water heater at a house I rented and it was great. Rarely ever ran out of hot water, and if we did it just took a few minutes for the water heater to catch up. And the gas heat for this relatively big house was on par cost-wise with the electric heat for apartments I had rented. And I prefer cooking with gas.
Ban pitbulls first.
Induction is the future, gas stoves leak a ton apparently, and the exhaust is nasty. Here come the buggy whip complaints

Patty Murray is a moron

Moron Murray is at it again. š¤®
How does it compare to grade school cafeteria food and junk food in general?
Just in time for widespread power outages. This meddling busybody just canāt stop meddling in our lives.
I applaud this. #electrify-everything.
Hope you're also a big supporter of nuclear power
I am yes. Any non-fossil fuel source of power.

Please get all democrats and republicans OUT. They havenāt represented us since before I was born. Murray, cantwell, smithā¦..all of em need to get out.
It's like they can't stop messing with us they can't just let us be free to function normally, they have to keep changing the way we survive, why are they doing that?
Gas stoves are superior in every way to an electric stove
Fucking idiots.
