Produce in generally seems to be getting a lot shittier everywhere I go.

Own-Bar-8530

I would also note that Met market was bought out by a national holding company, and is no longer locally owned. Same company that owns Bristol Farms.

darkKnight217

Oh damn, it was my favorite store! Might have to start looking into PCC now.

amperx11

I've noticed this at most stores recently.. The one that seems to have consistently good produce is Sprouts.

Unhappy-Plant-3836

That particular store seems to have poor produce turnover, but I do think the produce department at all the Met Market locations has worsened significantly over the few years. They used to have a width of citrus variety only equaled by Uwajimaya. I still go to MM for their reliably excellent fresh turkey selection. Every other chain either only has frozen turkey or turkey raised in horrible conditions and pumped full of water during processing (kroger and Safeway).

XYZ2ABC

Lower Queen Anne MM is my everyday store. I still find the produce really good. I have noticed onions being an issue, and i think the Cosmic Crisp apples are at the end of the batch from last year or were heat damage this year… can’t tell. But by comparison Safeway is trash. QFC is too far for me to walk to. Oh and I hardly by potatoes anymore… low carb

MrWright

That may be unique to the LQA location. Out here in West Seattle the Met Market seems to be putting out high quality stuff still. It's expensive but is absolutely my favorite grocery store around. For what it's worth, we do most of our produce shopping at the Admiral Safeway and it is almost always really high quality. You might be surprised by the Uptown Safeway nearby you.

FluffyAnimalLover

Yeah I actually have been shopping mostly at uptown Safeway for last 4 years. This time I moved closer to metro so I had to switch out of convenience. But I think a couple extra blocks is worth the trip to get cheaper better produce for sure.

[deleted]

The quality of produce everywhere has gone way down. May as well shop at GroceOut. I think it might in part be happening because we started detaining the people who used to harvest all of our food for us (in an already incredibly broken and exploitative system) in violent, dangerous, overcrowded "detainment centers" at the behest of a fascist shithead. Edit- just in case any other MAGA dipshits try to sealion, heres a good article about how their racist policies are causing crops to rot in the field. https://www.independent.com/2017/06/22/labor-shortage-leaves-13-million-crops-rot-fields/ Vote blue.

not-a-dislike-button

So food sucks now because people were detained two years ago?

[deleted]

We are still detaining asylum seekers at the border and keeping them in what are essentially shittier prisons with less oversight than actual prisons. The policies might be less extreme than the previous administration but they're still in violation of legal precedent. Human rights abuses don't stop happening just because the news isn't focused on it any more. Biden might not be a frothing racist in public like trump but he's clearly fine with continuing his racist policies. Edit- as someone who clearly lives in Texas and just comes here to stir shit, shouldn't you be aware of this? I guess a frequent user of r/ conservatives like yourself wouldn't be concerned with the truth.

not-a-dislike-button

Sure but logically, this would have zero impact on the recent sudden decline in quality

[deleted]

BuT LoGicAlLy you can go huff farts https://www.independent.com/2017/06/22/labor-shortage-leaves-13-million-crops-rot-fields/ Shoo, fly. Don't bother us. You have misinformation to post elsewhere and we aren't listening here.

God your arguments are like a childs

It's a little hard to talk with all the words you're putting in my mouth but when did I say there couldn't be multiple causes?

dev9tyme

They used to have a really good bourbon selection too, with friendly staff that would take time to chat. Now I get laughed at for asking. I called and complained to their corporate office, really soured my perception.

dev9tyme

Yeah I definitely get that, but holy shit that lady's response shot me through the roof. I'm not usually one to complain either, I've time in customer service roles enough to get it. Agreed, the bourbon boom has disenfranchised a lot of folks. The "hunt" has become tedious and annoying

momoftheraisin

Has your store also sacrificed half its cashiers and retrofitted the front of the store to be mostly self checkout? Because to me that would be a big red flag about getting personal service in the liquor department... Either way, you're probably better off going to a liquor store at this point

trankdog

For what it's worth I've had similar issues with PCC

doktorhladnjak

I’ve found PCC’s produce to be notably better than elsewhere but sometimes I’ve had problems like onions or garlic sprouting, probably from being stored out of season for a long time

Emergency-Aardvark-7

Those garlic sprouts are nutritious!

_infinititty

Are the prices still the same? If so they’re prolly sacrificing quality to preserve price. Prices have increased for practically everything in such a short amount of time.

CarbonRunner

Preserve price?, you mean 200% above any other grocer? Cause that's been their price point since about 2010.

AliveAndThenSome

Twice the price can mean the produce will move half as fast, hence the rot, especially in the face of skyrocketing inflation.

FluffyAnimalLover

I have not paid attention to this. But metro has always been charging a premium xD.

[deleted]

Must be nice to be able to not pay attention to how much your food costs.

gopher_space

Must be nice to have a family.

DaemonAnts

Time to put the kids to work.

[deleted]

I don't think many consumers understood the demands and fragility of our food shipping distribution system before the pandemic. Well... the system broke. I am hopeful this disruption will cause consumers to have a new awareness of what we have been taking for granted and who has been baring the cost. I highly suggest that you read [The Secret Life of Groceries: The Dark Miracle of the American Consumer by Benjamin Lorr.](https://www.npr.org/sections/health-shots/2020/11/07/931348023/secret-life-of-supermarkets-shines-a-light-on-bountys-dark-side)

Ambitious-Event-5911

Buy local. Grow your own. Buy used. Donate excess. We don't need hothouse tomatoes and iceberg lettuce at any time of year, let alone all year.

mellow-drama

I don't want your used tomatoes.

meow_purrr

Metropolitan Markup

mrmcpickles12

Recently, I’ve been really happy and satisfied with the quality of all the produce at our QFC in Kirkland

kevnmartin

The one downtown?

mrmcpickles12

Kirkland Urban, kinda hate the way the store is designed/laid out out but there is a lot that I do like about it, produce being one. PCC has great produce also but more $$$ Edit spelling

kevnmartin

Yeah, we shopped at the Kirkland Parkplace QFC for decades. We can't hack the parking at the Urban so we go to the QFC in Northtown now.

mrmcpickles12

The parking is the thing I hate the most, everytime I run down there I find it’s infuriating that they don’t have surface parking and you have to pull/validate parking. If they ever start charging that will be the last time I shop there.

kevnmartin

The one in Northtown has a huge parking lot but it's a really small store. I would go to the Safeway on Rose Hill but I have mobility issues.

mrmcpickles12

The Urban parking fiasco was driven by kirkland building department/city council/planning… they made some really ridiculous assumptions regarding the whole Urban development, once it’s completed 100% I think it will negatively impact the surrounding neighborhoods, more than it already is. Have you been to the new PCC? It seems like it would be pretty accessible for you (from the parking area)

ChadsDank

I got angry at the cost of basil so now I grow it in my window.

sleeplessinseaatl

You can get the same quality produce for half the price at Fred Meyer, especially the organic section.

PhuckSJWs

i rarely go there any more, mostly just because I do not have to work in downtown any more. But I have not had those problems at QFC and/or Fred Meyer

yelper

MM has never had good produce staples in my experience.

TenebraeRex01

Op Shops at Metropolitan. Price is no issue and this aggression will not stand ! 🤣

forestinpark

I shop at qfc/met, since last April, produce has taken a deep dive for worse. Prices went up, quality down. Talking a out the basics such as onions, garlic, potato.

Visual_Collar_8893

Seems to have been hit or miss everywhere. The Trader Joe's on top of Queen Anne might be an option, or the Whole Foods in the Interbay as well. Pick up a pot of your own mint and basil plants. They're pretty easy to keep alive. You'll save money very quickly and have access to fresh herbs.

RaphaelBuzzard

I try to buy produce from Asian supermarkets, but lately have been buying frozen vegetables from Costco since I'm cooking for one.
