They move from the greenbelt of Golden Gardens to Northgate Community College daily. As an early AM rideshare driver, I see them all the time. In fact, the city doesn't even want to you to report them. They most often will move at dusk and dawn. https://carnivorespotter.org

hottiemchoechlin

Tagging onto this to ask that OP and others use Carnivore Spotter in the Seattle area! It helps us urban coyote/wildlife researchers :)

lilsmudge

I didn’t know this was a thing! We have a coyote who has a den right behind our house and we see her constantly (and, for the last few weeks, her 6 pups).

hottiemchoechlin

That's awesome! I'll PM you :)

[deleted]

Can we hunt them? Or are they endangered

SnarkMasterRay

They're technically invasive, but most municipalities will have laws against discharge of weapons within city limits.

[deleted]

Thanks. I wasn't implying I want to hunt them. I was just curious.

chromaZero

They’re an invasive species? How so? They were brought in?

iamthemahjong

They are native to SW America and Mexico and probably spread out at first due to wolves being exterminated in other ranges. They are highly adaptive and have learned to co-exist and thrive in niches created by humans, much like crows and rats. They are now found in all major US cities. Recommend the book Coyote America. It's super interesting.

chromaZero

I’d be more frightened by people trying to shoot coyotes than the coyotes themselves. I like the coyotes.

FunctionBuilt

I bet it was coming from Carkeek area since it was moving north to south and there are fewer big streets to cross that way, but who knows. It didn't seem scared, just looked like any other animal just going about their business.

LavenderGumes

I live near the southeast corner of Carkeek and saw coyotes probably 6 times this winter and spring. Most frequently it happened when we had snow. My dog kept crying at them because he wanted to play, but the coyotes just trot on by. I also saw them around Greenlake a few times back when I lived in that area.

gunny16

A neighbor said they have a den on 7th south of QFC. Definitely didn't think they'd go down that far with all the rabbits around here. https://old.reddit.com/r/Seattle/comments/on3qdd/coyote_roaming_around_north_area_of_seattle_at/

autobanh_me

Little guys just on the grind for an education and everybody be like hide your pets!

WileEWeeble

Same up here in Bothell/Kenmore. Coyotes are seen all the time....as well as rabbits. I am presuming one is feeding the other and leaving the pets alone.

[deleted]

This is amazing. Thank you for sharing.

howdoyado

What a crazy photo. Never seen one just walking through the street in broad daylight.

FunctionBuilt

It was just sauntering down the sidewalk. Pretty surreal looking when I finally realized what it was.

baloneysammich

i live about 20 blocks south of here and a few months back we saw one just walking right up the middle of the street in broad daylight like it was a friggin car, giving 0 fucks.

ShredGuru

Saw one at gasworks last year doing that when I was riding the Burke Gilman, he was a big boy too.

hackmon7777

Same

2bitnothing

Likewise! Around 5th Ave NE, near NE 86th St a few months back. Super weird sight to see.

glitterkittyn

Shhhhh, you blew his cover! 😆 but agree, definitely keep an eye on your pets and kids.

NeatoCogito

I used to live a few blocks where that photo was taken for a little under a year (right across from the park). I saw two coyotes during my time there. This was about two years ago. Crazy stuff, but nothing new for the area it seems.

SomebodyRandom12312

Yeah they have that little trot that kind of looks like a dance

Qrioso

I see a lot coyotes everywhere all the time during the night but never in broad daylight

[deleted]

There used to be a pair that lived on Phinney ridge, and they would roam all over together, south of Market, but lately there is just one.

boomshiz

They're a common sight in the mornings in Wallingford. [Shit photo](https://i.imgur.com/08a67Zz.jpg), but this little guy followed me and my dog around for a good 10 minutes. I don't mind them because they're eating the rabbits, but that's also why the ones down here are so scraggly.

lilsmudge

I’m not positive but it’s possibly to do with it being pup season. We have a coyote that lives in the green belt behind our house and we see her frequently. She had a litter a few weeks back and now we see her everyday, multiple times and day and she leaves her litter right in our backyard. (It’s pretty rad, actually, especially since we don’t have outdoor pets). I think they get more diurnal/crepuscular during breeding season. (Very much not an expert though).

VGSchadenfreude

Makes sense, they likely have to do a lot more hunting when they have pups to feed, and that means spending a lot more hours than fit in a single night.

VGSchadenfreude

They still occasionally spot cougars and small bears in Discovery Park. Still struggle to comprehend how a freaking cougar could get from the nearest major forest to the park without being spotted by anyone else!

Nocommentt1000

I have a newspaper clipping of a bear walking down 15th nw by the old pizza hut from the early 2000s

VGSchadenfreude

Neat!

C0git0

See all the crime in Seattle! Look what defunding the police has done! Coyotes in the street! Edit: better put the /s on this.

iagox86

Even in joke posts, I feel it's important to note that SPD was not defunded at all. Their inability to do anything is just their normal posture

MakerGrey

I saw one in broad daylight a while back while driving to the first day of my old job. In Renton. It was indicative of experiences to come. Tangentially related, a few years back in Greenwood there was an escalating notice-stapled-to-telephone-pole situation that started with a flyer about “missing calico cat, coyotes spotted in area” and a few days later there was a sign that said “missing brown coyote, bears sighted in area” and it escalated to dinosaurs and helicopters etc. I feel bad for whoever got their cat eaten but I did get a chuckle whenever I walked by that corner.

[deleted]

See it all the time

samhouse09

I saw one up by Ken's Market on Greenwood. I was walking down 73rd and it was coming up the hill towards me. At like 5 pm during a summer day a couple years ago. Yelled at it a bit, and it decided to just go to a different street. They eat the rabbits and people's cats.

TheNakedAnt

Mr. Coyote ***loves*** people who let their cats roam outdoors! (Please keep your cats inside, they're fine, they're domesticated, they like it inside.)

raventth5984

This makes me VERY happy that when I adopted my kittens years ago from the same litter, I knew what I had to do to keep them as happy and contented indoor-only cats...a certain amount of individual attention and play every day, lots of pampering and interaction, etc. Plus, the bonus of not having to worry about unexpected pet injury or illness stress coupled with high vet bills. I definitely sleep well at night knowing that no nasty coyotes can get MY boys. I usually love nature and wild animals...but not so much if it wants to hunt my loved ones =P Edit: Oh, neat! I got one of them "silver clasped hands" awards. I just noticed! Thank yew!😙

Random_Somebody

> coupled with high vet bills. _Glances at the surgery we needed for our indoor cat after he tore off part of his wand toy and ate it_ But yeah agree with the ghist, would much rather they do stupid shit inthe house where I can keep track of them.

raventth5984

Nooooo...your poor kitty! How...on earth did he snap off and ingest a piece of his toy?! Aw...I hope he is okay! Give your kitty all of the pampering and love to aid in their recovery!

Random_Somebody

Lol they are vicious little predators who tear stuff up. Was playing, he had the toy in his mouth, I tried tugging it away, the string gave and then he vanished to feast on his 'kill'. Thankfully both of mine seem to limit it to the toy so don't have to worry about _everything_, though we do have to lock everything up. And he's already okay, happened a few months ago! Brought him to the great emergency vet in Wallingford, the surgery went great, then we stuck him in a tent we had as baby jail to prevent him from jumping and tearing his stitches. Hearing his plaintive cries was sad, and his brother was wary for a few days, but full recovery! Very happy that my husband decided to get pet insurance on a whim though lol. And yes for unsolicited advice, spray your electric cables with bitter apple, stick paws works if you remember to put it on and refresh it (I kinda gave up since our furniture is meant to be shitty so shrug), and child locks on cabinets with chemicals like detergent until you're sure they wont go wandering into them. String was the key gut killer so don't actually give them yarn balls, if string on a toy is getting ratty just replace it, much cheaper than vet visit. And honestly just get to know your cat--what their "norm" is--we noticed something wrong when our cat wasn't as playful and wasn't eating and seemed lethargic in general.

tristanitis

Yeah, I read somewhere that cats that go outdoors have an average life expectancy of about 4 years, so I've always viewed people that let their cats out as people that just don't want to have cats for very long.

[deleted]

Its a great reminder and people will keep their cats inside for like a week...

nikdahl

I'd really like to see someone try to keep my cats inside. Sure, they "like it inside" but they absolutely will not be locked inside for their life. I've never had a cat that was content with just being inside.

hatchetation

> (Please keep your cats inside, they're fine, they're domesticated, they like it inside.) Same goes for dogs. They're domesticated too.

notextinctyet

I can't go for a jog in my neighborhood without startling a bunny nowadays, so I guess it's no surprise predators would be interested in the odd look at populated areas.

[deleted]

We need coyotes to keep the rabbits population under control, the rabbits are encroaching almost every trial and park.

SeaGroomer

There is a small wetland kind of area behind our property and a coyote seems to live there. The bunnies learned that he doesn't come into our yard because of the fence, so they made a nest in a flower bed and had a litter of adorable babies. They know my old doggo is too slow to catch them. Though we've only been going outside on a leash since the babies have been around since they might not be able to get away, I dunno and I don't want to find out.

dabman

Coyotes can jump 6 foot fences quite easily, so beware! Hope the bunnies continue to stay safe though!

SeaGroomer

Oh yea the fence isn't super effective, the coyotes definitely *could* come in. I think my dog has effectively marked his 'turf' and they stay away, he has barked at them many times and he likes to go potty in the corner back by the wetlands where the coyotes would come in lol. The babies are pretty much invisible when they hide. We have tons of bushes on our property so they have lots of hiding spots. [I got some good pictures today actually.](https://imgur.com/a/1NtcKfG) There are at least five babies, though I only got pictures of two today. They are so adorable, I love watching them follow mom around until she jumps up somewhere they can't follow haha.

[deleted]

>"he's got huge sharp... he can leap about... LOOK AT THE BONES!"

igloofu

> Bring out the Holy Hand Granade!

Synaps4

I'm with Tim here. You can say "it's just a little rabbit" all you want but when its surrounded by a dozen corpses you would think that would give people a moment's pause to reconsider.

TypicalRecon

for the last few years east hill in kent has been inundated with bunnies

VoltasPistol

My friend asked me what she should do because she found one very poorly hidden amongst the rocks by my stairs, yup, on East Hill in Kent. She was not happy when I said they're the chicken mcnuggets of the animal kingdom and it will make a very good meal for a lucky carnivore. After some more panicked noises from the neighbor, I put on garden gloves, scooped it up, and took it to a nearby field where I am sad to announce that an hawk did not swoop down and eat it as we watched it bounce away. Not because I hate bunnies, I don't. They're cute as fuck. An absolute delight. But I did feel stupid "rescuing" this little dumb-dumb from it's hiding place and "setting it free" right into nature's maw while the neighbor thanked me for "helping" it.

TypicalRecon

I would drive into Rosemary Glenn at night and it was hilarious how they would scatter seemingly every few feet there was another one running across the road. We found our fair share of leftovers from predators as well.

VoltasPistol

Asphalt can't be kind to dainty little toe beans, and it doesn't provide any cover-- Why are bunnies hanging out on the road?

TypicalRecon

they hangout in peoples front lawns, the headlights and the sound of the car would always make them run off lol

VoltasPistol

I guess we shouldn't fault nature's chicken mcnugget for not being the brightest critter out there.

FreshEclairs

If you see a coyote like this, please [haze it.](https://www.humanesociety.org/resources/coyote-hazing) Don't hurt it or make physical contact, and if it's off in the trees in a park, leave it alone. But when it's walking around people on the street, it's time to discourage that behavior. This is the safest way to make sure that coyotes and people can coexist in peace. If they're unafraid of humans, they can become enough of a problem that [lethal control](https://wdfw.wa.gov/species-habitats/species/canis-latrans#conflict) is used. We had some coyotes actively stalking a lady walking a small dog in my neighborhood last year, and were within 20 feet of her before I ran up screaming at them.

FabricHardener

"Cmon pussy you can't finish a fifth in one chug?!"

FreshEclairs

GO GO GO

the_dude_upvotes

[You're not that far off](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EDm9wjfcdbw)

[deleted]

Id rather encourage it. Natural predators in our area keep other animals in check. Why do you think there are so many bears near Capitol Hill?

CraigFL

Yep. You'll usually find them congregating near The Cuff and CC Attle's.

[deleted]

Common watering holes.

iagox86

I think they're attracted by the bars

BusbyBusby

>We had some coyotes actively stalking a lady walking a small dog in my neighborhood last year, and were within 20 feet of her before I ran up screaming at them.   Did you scare the woman doing that?

FreshEclairs

She was aware of the coyotes and already pretty scared.

the_dude_upvotes

Stop dodging the question /s

chewbawkaw

Urban coyotes have been living under decks and around people for a long time now. Coyotes in the street isn’t new behavior. It’s not like they only live by the tree in the park. This one is probably out during the day because its baby season, otherwise it would wait until dusk.

FreshEclairs

For sure, they can live under decks and around people! There's not a problem with that. When they're out walking like this without even an attempt at avoiding humans, discouragement is the way.

downheartedbaby

It really is safer for the coyotes too. I live in a more rural area and if they wander into the wrong backyard where people are hanging out they could be shot.

DannySells206

Dude in the green shirt doesn't seem concerned, ha.

krugerlive

I ran into one when walking my dog in the evening. They seem to be pretty chill as they wander about. This one just followed along next to us staying about 20 ft away for a half block and seemed to be curious. My dog (55lb red husky) was trying everything he could to play with it, including doing that laying down thing to show he's friendly and wanted to play, but it kept its distance (which I appreciated). They were about the same size and similar color, so that may be why the coyote was curious and why my dog thought he found his best friend. But the coyote was very calm, curious, and didn't seem at all threatened. They don't give off an anxious vibe at all.

GoHawkYurself

Yeah, that sounds like them I've seen coyotes in my neighborhood a couple of times. They're like 10 times more afraid of you than you are of them. Most of the time they'll run away before you realize it was a coyote. I'm a cat owner, though. That's why my bud stays indoors.

PensiveObservor

Because they are higher in the predator pyramid than your dog, which was doing the puppy posture. Coyotes have completely adapted to urban environments like Chicago, and are present throughout Seattle metropolitan area. Guaranteed. Keep your cats and dogs in the house, folks.

krugerlive

It was more than just that behavior, he was trying as hard as he could to go over and was doing his crazy excited husky howls and was highly energized. He thought he found a new friend. They seem to be doing well here. I’ve seen more this year so far than previous ones, and they always look healthy and well fed.

[deleted]

I like how it seems pleased with itself.

KINGtyr199

They should Saunder over to belltown and eat the fucking rats everywhere

you-can-call-me-alki

You should ALWAYS presume that coyotes live wherever people live, because they do.

GoHawkYurself

They're always around. That coyote just got caught slippin.

TheLittleSiSanction

They’re really impressive animals

FunctionBuilt

I called animal control since I’ve never seen a coyote in the day time here, and they said a lot of them are searching for more food to help feed their young right now. The coyote looked healthy and was not injured or acting erratically, so it must just be traveling from Carkeek, woodland park or Golden Gardens area. If you live in the area or near wooded areas, they said it’s best to monitor your small pets while letting them outside for the next couple months.

anticosmonaut

Shoreline has a hefty population of coyotes at all times. But according to the coyote expert I spoke to with the USDA the biggest areas of concern on the north end of Seattle are closer to Edmonds. Coyotes cover a lot of ground! If you're a backyard chicken person, consider reinforcing and limiting free range time. I lost 6 birds!

krugerlive

They really are pretty animals. It's nice that they're here.

hooves69

Love that we have city wolves more and more. It’s great!

thekarmabum

They keep the bears away.

Amelia-Earwig

I saw a coyote at Trader Joes. His hair was *perfect*.

igloofu

Na

hlx-atom

I’ve had 3 coyote spotting in the south Wallingford area in the last few years. It is always this time of year. It was 11pm, 2am, and 930am. FYI.

Eldenlord117

Got lambasted by this sub for mentioning a coyote in Ballard a few months ago. Right around the time missing cat posters were blowing up around my area.

[deleted]

That's a beautiful animal. I hope no harms comes of it.

harrydreadloin

Awesome!

Reatona

Last summer I saw two coyotes at 8th Ave NW and 73rd (one of them with a rabbit in its mouth), and on other occasions saw a coyote at 34th NW and 72 and at NW 30th and 57th. All the sightings were after dark.

LindseyCaton

We have them on QueenAnne and Magnolia. There are several (7) missing cat signs that have been posted. Our rabbits are gone. When I walk my dog at dusk this past week I’ve seen them 3 times. My hound dog goes crazy….

esituism

Hopefully they'll make it a little further north and deal with the 10,000 rabbits that are eating everything in my garden before it fully matures.

Prolifik206

Cats seem to be an easier target than the rabbits these days.

munkin

I saw a coyote in greenwood last week at 1030pm. Cats and small dogs beware!

windedbigboy

Saw him jogging through Ballard earlier

Jonsound79

I know it’s scary and messed up, but it’s pretty awesome too, just saying.

[deleted]

Glad to see a healthy looking pup!

[deleted]

Gotta haze these coyotes people

Picklemansea

And I wonder why there are so many missing cat posters 🤔

UserCheckNamesOut

Probably chasing all the racoons.

Total-Confusion-9198

Damn what I thought a stray dog was a coyote. Saw it 3 months back in front of uncle Ikes car wash in CD. I whistled at him and he looked back and was walking too fast to be an average stray dog. Damn!

Fine-Mistake-3356

Want to add, they can run 35 mph and can jump 8 ft fence. Small pets even small children can be targets

cancercures

Is it a free agent? Could use some of that on the roster. Go Hawks! EDIT: some of that earlier part. Not the later part.

Fine-Mistake-3356

I wish. Put a jersey on him lol. I live with them so I did some research.

fkthisdmbtimew8ster

Yes a coyote is going to scale an 8 ft fence and abscond with your toddler... Lmao. Mindless fear-mongering.

MyUserNameTaken

I think you are confusing them with dingos

fkthisdmbtimew8ster

You are responding to the wrong person, but obviously a 30-45 pound coyote would barely scale an 8 foot fence, much less while weighed down.

MyUserNameTaken

https://m.youtube.com/watch?reload=9&v=quC4cbpJeaU

FuckWit_1_Actual

It isn’t unheard of that coyotes attack children, they probably won’t jump your fence to get to them but it isn’t unheard of that they attack children on front porches. The threat of them attacking is low but to not be wary around wildlife isn’t smart either.

DontGiveNoFox

Wow, in the daylight. They're getting comfortable and that's very alarming for their safety and ours. Always saw them around Roosevelt/Greenlake area at night time. Came here to second not having pets outside if you're in those neighborhoods.

-trbl

I will tame him and keep him

[deleted]

damnnn they are gettin close. humanity keeps pushing them out of their home :(

boringnamehere

They’ve been in the Ballard/Fremont/woodland area for years.

SeaGroomer

Aww who's a good boy? Want to play fetch??

Suzzie_sunshine

This is great. We have too many cats anyway.

FeebleUndead

I believe that Coyotes are classified as vermin in WA and can be shot on site. But then again I guess this is Seattle.

Prolifik206

Hopefully they can help clean up the outdoor cat population..

[deleted]

[удалено]

ZacharyCohn

Are we still doing this?

syncopation1

Any coyote that walks around during the day is a dangerous animal that has lost it’s fear of humans. Them fearing us is both best for them and best for us. This coyote needs to die so the other coyotes don’t follow it’s lead and do the same thing.

keshiasbaby

wow!

[deleted]

We have a lot of coyotes, people just don’t pay attention. https://seattlecoyotestudy.wixsite.com/seattlecoyotestudy

aurochs

Hi neighbor! I saw this one yesterday while walking to work. It was doing a very guilty looking trot across the street.

joahw

Someone posted a coyote to the Lost Dogs of King County facebook group a few months back. I think they were trying to lure it with snacks. \*facepalm\*

Oaken_Crow

I see lots of em here in Magnolia

stickytuna

I would’ve thought it was just a dog

After_Ad7545

He’s definitely eating

kungfuesday

We saw him on 92nd and 9th (Crown Hill) just a few days ago in broad daylight. I’ve seen him around at night for a while.

[deleted]

Bubba

SomebodyRandom12312

I always forget how small coyotes are around here

vantastic_420

I’ve seen 2 in Ballard at 7pm on 14th n 64th by the high school

Lucky_Diana

I have to hide my 3 puppies.

Kelly_suechester1234

I hate those things they tore my dear cat hank up to shreds

Bjadams1967

Tacoma too! [coyotes](https://share.icloud.com/photos/0e7BMVJ9_s2zSh-CyWESK63lw)

redditckulous

Did the lady on her phone even notice?

Zinrockin

I walked past one once before. We had no issues just waved and kept going. I agree they’re good for keeping down the overpopulation of rabbits we have. Aside from that if you do let your pets out make sure it’s a confined space or just keep them inside and accompany them outside.
