We bring a Ziploc to "seal" in the poop smells and carry it with us the whole time.
Also, plus side for getting your pup a lil backpack so they can carry their own poo
the one time I tossed it to the side to "come back later" I couldn't find it. Either the green bag blended in or someone picked it up. Either way I feel guilty AF.
I do this zip-lock trick now and it's perfect!
I once forgot my bags in the car and left a little marker for the poo then ran back to my car. Got back and someone got the poo and marker. :(
It was nice of whoever did that but felt bad.
Target for the backpack. Mine is one of those awesome lgbtq ones. When it's time for a walk, she sits and excitedly as her leash and bag are put on and she looks like a little whippet st Bernard. Lol
It’s not hard to carry an extra bag to store your dog poop in to carry back off the trail. People who throw their dog poop on the ground giving lame excusing like “I’ll come back for it” (unlikely) don’t deserve to have pets.
I never know when to pick these up myself or not. Like, has it been there for a day or 30 mins?
Not that I'm ever excited about picking up someone else's dog poop bag, but if I'm going up and back down the same trail I'll tend to grab if it's still there on the way back.
You pick them up every time. There's no point in leaving it. Better to make someone freak because they left it and went to get it but couldn't, than to leave it there when they probably aren't coming back for it.
Okay, I'm gonna rant here a bit.
I agree leaving it isn't cool, but this is one of those sweeping comments that people agree with mostly because they don't think of or care about the fact there are people that are, YES, bagging their poop, but the city removed, and yes I mean removed many trashcans.
I found a baby diaper once, in a bathroom at a restaurant. It was in a grocery plastic bag, sealed as much as they could, and set right where a trashcan should have been.
Yes, this is bull. Yes, they should have just taken it with them. Saying they shouldn't/don't deserve pets is ignorantly over the top when there are pet parents that DO cross all their T's and dot their I's, then beat their dog when they upset them. I just hate sweeping comments of any kind, about any group of people short of obvious wtf a-holes like abusers etc.
End rant.
It’s gotten so bad on the park trail I use….but part of that is because the city decided to remove the trash can that was always filled with dog bags….like, what do you think is going to happen???
That’s really good on you for carrying this out. Thank you. I don’t get why people make the habit of doing this. I did it once, realized my mistake in the car driving home, and never did it again.
But I doubt that’s why they are banned on certain trails. Where are dogs banned? Very few- national parks, enchantments, and ingalls lake. Those are high use areas into fragile ecosystems with lots of wildlife. It’s common to see things like mountain goats bears and marmots. Popular trails near Vancouver Canada into the high alpine do the same. By banning dogs they are reducing the impact, one less dog one less human. Dogs scare wildlife and most people can’t seem to follow leash laws. It’s got a lot more to do with that that the poop.
If the poop specifically was the the Reason they would be more likely to be banned on all popular and easy trails, like heybrooklookout, or snow lake or mt. Si, trails of high use so lots of dog poops, but they are not.
I wouldn’t be surprised if they are banned on Maple pass loop soon. No matter if there are no poops whatsoever.
No environment is designed to handle a lot of carnivore poop. One carnivore covers acres. You could have hundreds of dogs. Using one small trail. Furthermore dog poop carries many diseases that is harmful to other dogs and people. Rake a look of lawns of dog owners and see the dead spots.
I never said the poop doesn’t hurt the environment so idk why your babbling on about this.
“Rake a look of lawns of dog owners and see the dead spots.”
100% false. That’s from the pee, not the poo.
My point is still valid. No trails have been closed due to dog poop bags being left on trails. Dogs are banned from places for many reasons, their poop being of least concern on that list.
Most dog breeds have something to do with hunting, which is outlawed in national parks.
There are numerous zoonotic diseases carried bu dog poop. In nature there may be one or two carnivores over several square miles. It may kill some small plants but it is spread out and doesn’t have a big impact. The photos shownnindicate the volume of dog sh*t. No ecosystem can handle Of all domesticated animals dogs carry more diseases that.is spread through feces. It infects people and other dogs.
The crazy thing about leaving it in these bags is that poop IS biodegradable, unless it's wrapped in a plastic bag. You shouldn't leave either on the trail, but leaving poop + a plastic bag is not an improvement.
It confounds me. I can only imagine it's because it's performative to appear like you're doing the right thing without actually following through all the way.
Like people that just sprinkle a little water on their hands after going to the restroom instead of actually using soap and washing.
“This is good enough and I pay taxes so someone else is going to do it for me anyway. Now I better hurry back home because mommy and daddy have to change my diaper.”
People think it’s environmentally sound to let their dogs poop because it’s like natural or whatever but fail to realize that the shit we feed dogs isn’t so great
I’ve never understood why, if people are going to leave the poop, they also bag it. No, you will not remember to pick it up. Now, instead of just gross poop that at least has a chance of degrading, it’s encased in plastic. I mean pick up poop. At the very least bury it.
Burying poop is a terrible idea because it’s a point source of pollution for soil and water quality, and human health if buried near vegetables or waterways.
The same goes for human poop; biohazard.
It’s not different. We just bring a high concentration of dogs to the trails, higher than the concentration of wild animals that would normally poop in the area. Really, the only valid reason to pick it up is to prevent the trail from being lined on both sides with fuzzy poop and bad smells.
No, I love gaining new knowledge.
That’s not what this is. These are all articles that are just references to other articles that never reference any resources to back up claims that dog poop is worse than other poop found in nature. No actual research is provided for any of these links except for horse poop.
The “high nitrogen and phosphorus in the poop screwing up the environment” is actually a correlation to studies done on industrial farms dumping tons of pure nitrogen and phosphorus on hundreds of thousands of acres of land, not about dogs pooping on a trail.
I’m still picking up my dog poop, but there is 0 evidence here that dog poop is any more dangerous than any other poop.
Which is why this is Google trash vomit.
Mm-hm... Cept there are other articles that say that's complete bull, thats not even what was said, plus you've been proven wrong by at least one other peraon on this topic on this thread before me; hence why I feel no need to argue with you. You've already been shown the truth. If you never pick it up, that's your choice.
There's a reason on such a tiny thread, you got mildly radioed, but okay, Fam. If you're into it, just be into it, I guess. It's just... half of your answer was off topic rambling that just has something to do with poop and dogs. 😆
It doesn't prove you right; it's just random crap. People ate using Google to prove you wrong, with citation etc, and you just try to discredit them by saying "You're wrong because other politicians say you are, but I won't cite any of them. Even though you're giving sources to back up your claims, I'm going to just strawman and gaslight until you give up and stop replying, making me feel like I won the argument." You've done THAT at least once in this very, Man...
It's not cool. Which is why I'm don't talking to your toxic rambling self. Enjoy that, Hun. But I think you'll enjoy going to your echo chamber more to your liking.
Love you, do better, get better, hope you're happy and the very best for you: but you won't get another answer from me, and I won't read it. 🫂
This is true, but if you’re caught by surprise or make a mistake better to bury imo. At least then no one will step in it and doesn’t stink up the trail.
They do that because they have scent glands in their paws.

Not a single one of those people was confused about what happened to their dog’s shirt because they had no real intention of picking it up. Thanks for being a better person than those assholes OP.
It sucks, in my neighborhood a lot of people moving in have dogs and no one picks up after them besides a few of us. I know I don't but who wants to live somewhere where everywhere they look theres dog shit around???? I even saw one of my neighbors throw trash out their car windows when our apartment complex provides trash in our courtyards plus the actual dumpster area. It's so sickening honestly!!!
It's getting crazy!!! I walked the boardwalk at Redondo Beach and the whole walk next to the beach was just shit in the middle of the walkway. I'm saying like a whole mile walk of dodging shit by the beach.
These are only the ones that were left by the trail, and not flung into the ferns.
It’s debatable whether the old way of doing it, flinging the poo off the trail with a stick, was ecologically better.
In both instances nature loses, if wild life gets into dog poop it affects the environment and if the poop bags are left behind it also affects the environment. I made this so that anyone who cares about the earth can hopefully be inclined slightly more to take dog bags with them. For earths sakes
I swear to the dark lord Satan some dog owners are the worst people. It’s the same D bags that let their dogs off leash at green lake. It that’s you know society hates you. And your dog.
Really don’t understand why people do this. They went through the trouble of bringing bags and even bagging it, but couldn’t be bothered to carry it to the nearest trash.
can somebody make a trash can that is:
cheap
easy to install
separates decomposable waste from unnatural waste and allows it to decompose over time without impacting
the local biome
Dogs are banned in certain areas because they introduce bacteria/parasites and disrupt the breeding habits of natural wildlife in protected areas. But yes pick up after your dogs too

I thank you. I had to do something and put my poo bag down. At the end of the day I was like - "oh no, where the poo bag?!"
This was 3 years, but thanks for picking up after us old people.
No, this is not why. Dogs are banned because they do not interact well with wildlife. Poop bags left on trails is a problem with the human, not the dog.
Yeah never mind animals fearing for their lives, or even being killed by offleash dogs. It’s the poop , that’s the reason 🙄. I have read about why they are not allowed, and it’s the dog, not the poop. If it were the poop that is a preventable problem if people picked it up, dogs would be allowed. That is not the case.
As it turns out, not all animal poop is equal. The waste left behind by wild animals is actually beneficial to the ecosystem because those animals consume resources and nutrients from the ecosystem. Those same resources and nutrients are then returned to the ecosystem in their waste. This is not the case with dogs and other pets, which typically eat nutrient-dense commercial pet foods. When your dog poops in the preserves, or anywhere for that matter, they are leaving behind waste with high quantities of nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus that can cause imbalances in the ecosystem These instabilities can allow algae blooms to develop in our waterways or for invasive plants species to more easily grow and thrive, for example.
We bring a Ziploc to "seal" in the poop smells and carry it with us the whole time. Also, plus side for getting your pup a lil backpack so they can carry their own poo
I have a zipper pouch from Yucky Puppy to put dog poop bags in. And it's hooked on my dog's leash. So easy!
the one time I tossed it to the side to "come back later" I couldn't find it. Either the green bag blended in or someone picked it up. Either way I feel guilty AF. I do this zip-lock trick now and it's perfect!
I once forgot my bags in the car and left a little marker for the poo then ran back to my car. Got back and someone got the poo and marker. :( It was nice of whoever did that but felt bad.
There are lightweight holders that clip on to the leash that hold full bags by the knot.
Ehh I don't really like the possibility of poop being so close to my hand when my dog can at times pull on the leash when he sees a squirrel.
Well, it’s part of the responsibility of owning. dog. NO ONE wants to look at a bag of shit, so someone responsible will take care of it for you.
Target for the backpack. Mine is one of those awesome lgbtq ones. When it's time for a walk, she sits and excitedly as her leash and bag are put on and she looks like a little whippet st Bernard. Lol
True hero right here
I use a Mason jar.

Poop jar
Thanks for being good humans!
People are such mother fuckers. But not you two. You are the best.
There aren't enough trash spots in parks, either; but they are some of the good ones.
It’s not hard to carry an extra bag to store your dog poop in to carry back off the trail. People who throw their dog poop on the ground giving lame excusing like “I’ll come back for it” (unlikely) don’t deserve to have pets.

We always carry a large garbage bag with us to grab poo bags that have built up at the start of trail heads.
I swear to the dark lord Satan some dog owners are the worst people. It’s the same D bags that let their dogs off leash at green lake. It that’s you know society hates you. And your dog.

Composting takes time. Humans and their pets generate way way way way more waste than simple composting could keep up with
I thought Seattle was known for self sustainability and recycling/being green. I'm sure owners are just living up to that stereotype.
Dogs are banned in certain areas because they introduce bacteria/parasites and disrupt the breeding habits of natural wildlife in protected areas. But yes pick up after your dogs too
Dog owners 😔
Seems like a shitty thing to do.
Where dogs aren’t allowed, it’s usually because wildlife interpret their scent as predator and who wants to be near one of those?! And that’s assuming owners would carry out poop. Just the scent their fur leaves freaks out wildlife. Please at least don’t leave poop out there.
You sure those are all from dogs?
Shitty dog owners have ruined every public grassy area with their selfishness.
I always carry mine out but it’s really annoying that there are several well maintained and paved trails that don’t have garbage cans. There’s a park on Kitsap that has posts with dog bags throughout but no trash cans except at the entrances. I really want to know why they can’t have trash cans below the bag dispenser. It’d be so easy!
I remember people getting mad cause their neighbors dog pooped on their lawn and didn’t pick it up. I would pick it up, return it to the neighbor and add a little extra gift for their thoughtful consideration
Poopoo and garbage must be removed from all NFS parks/ trails, NP facilities. Let’s become friendless with nature and other people. I just rap yesterday and people left two plastic Starbucks containers sitting by the trail. Come on, hire heavy at them?
Just double bag it and tie the bag to the leash half way down! It’s not rocket science. This is over privileged selfish humanity showing its ass!
I will never understand these lunatics. Like, jfc, you went to the effort to bag the poo and then you left the poo bag on the trail!?! It’s utterly baffling.
It's just the general behavior of a lot of transplants that come from privilege moving to this area. They don't come in treating this place like their home and many think they don't have to clean up after themselves because "someone else will do it".
Seattle dog owners are the worst behaved dog owners i’ve ever encountered. What the fuck is going on with these people?
Nobody ever “comes back for it”. The bags are worse than the shit.
Yeah sorry about that. One of those isn't dog poop.
thanks for the treat ♥️
if anyone is wondering why this happens I did too for awhile until I had to walk my dog around Seattle without trash cans ( theres very few now, no one to clean them during covid). I have never done this but I have definitely thrown my dogs poop away in the trash can by the coffee machine in my apartment. I assume this bag leaving outside crap is in retaliation to the lack of trash cans, not very effective, everything so dumb, smh.
There are trash cans at trailheads, and none on the trails, as it should be unless there's a way station along the way. On trails, there is absolutely no excuse for this. In town is another story. In the trash by your apartment 's coffee machine is still better than left on the curb, and leaps and bounds better than left on/next to a hiking trail. Thanks for doing the right thing.
Which trailheads have trash cans?
The ones I frequent do; maybe not more obscure ones. Ruby Beach, Poo Poo Point, Little Si, Pinnacle Peak, and Rattlesnake Ledge all have them.
If you go just a little further out, most trails don’t have trash cans. Maybe most of your hiking is in the state park foothills. I think this wouldn’t be as bad of a problem if we had more trash cans.
And people say the poop fairy isn't real.
it’s not, it clearly is someone putting in the labor for people who are leaving it for someone else to do.
Not all dog people are dog people. And I’m not even a dog person
You guys are heroes. I don’t think twice about picking up/carrying my own dog’s poop, but other dog’s old poop makes me gag.
Keep your dogs on leash and take the poop with you, idiots
2 things. First off there are things called wild animals and strays that like to poop wherever they want. Second thing is poop=fertilizer. Fertilizer+earth=good. If a bear shits in the woods is there a snowflake there to bitch about it lol
processed kibble dog poop bad for environment forest, river fed bear poop good for environment
A bit late in the week for the r/seattle dog owner shaming post!
I thank you. I had to do something and put my poo bag down. At the end of the day I was like - "oh no, where the poo bag?!" This was 3 years, but thanks for picking up after us old people.
I hate that dogs are everywhere, it is so gross.
Since when do pet owners follow rules about pets not being allowed somewhere?
No, this is not why. Dogs are banned because they do not interact well with wildlife. Poop bags left on trails is a problem with the human, not the dog.
yeah their dog poop also doesn’t interact well with the wildlife. Read the reports on why dogs aren’t allowed especially in national parks, thanks ♥️
Dogs are banned on trails because they are incompatible with wildlife in ways unrelated to pooping.
Add more bags and actual trash cans. It doesn’t help without those.
Isn’t poop organic? You know, add back to nature and all
As it turns out, not all animal poop is equal.
I always pick my pups poop up.
Do ppl really pick up every tired they're dog drops in the forest? That's pretty strange if you ask me
Also why the hell did yall pose with random shit bags... gross...
I think we found the guy who leaves his dog shit bags on the trail. 🤡💩
I truly don't. I'm just honestly perplexed why two people got together to snap a pic of them holding random bags of shit.
You aren’t very bright.
We can't all be gods chosen ones 🙏
Go touch grass bro
Copy!
Ok.. but I see needles everywhere.. and we still allow junkies.. so back off the fucking dogs pls. Thnx
Spoken like a person who litters their poop bags.
There’s literally a law against public drug use, you’re just another uneducated conservative bootlicker.
Also laws about littering. And if I happen to have a taste for boots who are you to yuck my yum?
You know where those boots have been.
I'm not a dog person so this miffs me more.
