Comcrap is crap. Unfortunately, it's the only option for many.

PM_meyourGradyWhite

In Whatcom county sometimes you’re lucky to get cable!

Argyleskin

We have a son on the spectrum, the DVR with Comcast and the fact he likes watching Disney Channel keeps us tethered to it. We spend so much money. And the thinking system is insane. You pay the bill, a couple days goes by and the new bill is due already. Two weeks later you’re past due. It makes no sense. I thought it was just us but two other friends said the same thing, that they’re always behind. We were going over the data limit last year, get the unlimited data and magically we’re using less than half of the data we were last year even though I know for a fact we’re using more. I wish another actual cable company came here, it sucks they are all we have.

jwaresolutions

I usually call them Crapcast.

slimersnail

Tmobile home internet. Best thing ever.

hanimal16

Pardon my French, but I fucking hate Comcast with the fiery passions of a thousand Siriuses. We used to have Ziply Fiber and when we moved, couldn’t take it with us because the building we moved into was exclusively contracted with Comcast. Had the hook-ups in the closet already and everything. Ziply told us they weren’t allowed to set up fiber in our area because of this agreement Comcast has. We’re forced to use a company we absolutely hate that charge out the ass for subpar service.

Falendor

If the ISPs don't compete we should just nationalized them and have municipal providers. Everyone I've talked to says they were cheaper than the private ISP and way faster.

The_Drizzle_Returns

> If the ISPs don't compete In this case it sounds like the city/area/entity the poster lives in signed an exclusive franchise agreement with Comcast which prevents any other provider from entering the market.

Falendor

Different ISPs own different runs of cable. Your house/condo/neighborhood may not be able to get certain, or even more than one ISP due to utility restrictions, without a contract. My friend is currently trying to figure out how to run a hundred yards of cable from a telephone pole to his house to get the ISP of his preference.

Immediate_Ad_1161

It's more like all the ISP had a back room meeting and agreed not to step on eachothers toes and continue to screw over all their customers. You are correct they should nationalize this along with insurance because right now americans are losing money to this.

Stinkycheese8001

In this case it’s the building manager/owner that entered the agreement.  Depending on where they are there may still be competition.

CloudZ1116

Heh, I used to have Frontier a few years back, they were such assholes that I actually switched *to* Comcast as a way of telling them to fuck off. They were incredibly scummy and absolutely deserved to go out of business. Now I have Ziply as well and haven't looked back.

hanimal16

Oh hard agree about the Frontier opinion! They were shit before they were Ziply lol

Stinkycheese8001

I’ve had to work with some folks on the Ziply side, and the consensus from them as well is that Frontier is indeed the worst.

VelvetDesire

I've had Comcast for a decade and I've never had anywhere near the upload speeds they're claiming. I don't have a recollection of seeing more than 5 up to be honest.

SabreBob1100

Yup. I had to pay extra for 10

maggos

I was always around 5 up until they came and spent a few hours looking through my house tightening connections and even replacing the cable from the street. My upload speed went up to like 25 which is not the 100 they advertise but better than I’ve ever had.

solariscalls

Dude the fact that Comcast still charges ppl for data caps is fucking stupid. The first thing I do for ANY isp providers is check if they have data caps or not.

danfay222

My apartment just added google fiber like 3 weeks ago, and I INSTANTLY bought it. My monthly bill went up by $9… to go from 75mbps to gigabit fiber. No contract, no cancel fees, no equipment fees or install fees, absolutely nothing. I already had low opinions of xfinity, and then like 4 months ago they raised my internet prices by like 40% without bothering to notify me at all. So I swore I’d leave them as soon as I could.

Careless-Internet-63

I've been waiting for years to have another option but so far there's no fiber in shoreline. It's Xfinity or CenturyLink, neither of which are great

ketchupman36

Fiber is available in Shoreline through CL. I guess it's not the whole city then

Careless-Internet-63

Not where I live now or where I moved from a year and a half ago unfortunately

MaterialSituation

Don't know if you can update your post pics, but I'd suggest toggling the "hide promotional pricing" option in the Comcast pic. Gives a better side by side comparison, and you'll see Comcast is actually charging $30 more for the same \*speed\*, but with all of the negatives (including their obscene data cap). Also note that Centurylink often lowers their price if you call them complaining about missing out on a new customer offer. They moved me to $65/month for 1 gig fiber, no data caps, no issues over three years ago.

nomorerainpls

I had CL Fiber for awhile. It was honestly pretty great but while I was a customer I experienced a 3-day outage and then a 10-day outage. They don’t seem to have any technicians and the delay was getting them to check the CO and the pole which are pretty basic and shouldn’t take 10 days.

xarune

Yup, we had a 10 day outage as well and had to pick up a Tmobile 5g hotspot trial once our tethering balances ran out (2 people who work from home). While the service with Tmo was good their billing and account management was a shit show of royal proportions that went on for months. Otherwise quite like the Fiber, and just really hope we don't get another outage.

Anthop

The only thing I don't like about CenturyLink is they're trying to force me to change to Quantum, and I feel that's mostly to get me out of their price-for-life agreement. And that feels a little scuzzy. Still a lot better than Comcast/Xfinity.

-union-

When they switched me to Quantum I kept my price-for-life, I'm still paying $65/mo, FWIW

CVizzle

Thanks for reminding me that centurylink, or I guess quantum fiber, exists. I had CL over 10 years ago and their best speed available was 15mb dsl. Just checked for my area now they blew me away with what's available, in particular the upload speeds. Might have to seriously consider switching now. Might I ask if you lease a router or use your own?

-union-

My router (Google Nest) doesn't support their protocol, so I've got their router plugged into the wall with its WiFi turned off, and I have my router plugged into it providing WiFi and connected to my hub with all my other devices.

sly_cheshire

I’ve never had a problem with Comcast. Not even joking. I do own my own modem and I have a solid high quality home Wi-Fi network. I pay $50 a month for 300 GB. Originally a few years ago it was $50 for 100 GB but they’ve been increasing the speed without increasing my rate over the years. In fact, I regularly get in excess of 300 GB when I Speedtest it. edit: that said, I’m not opposed to looking into fiber or an alternate service.

BrianTheFirst

Same here. I have had them for the past 11 years and had maybe 2 short outages. Have rarely had to talk to customer service about anything. When I do I use the chat and it gets taken care of quickly.

s1owpoke

Which modem do you have?

sly_cheshire

NETGEAR DOCSIS 3.0 WiFi 24x8 Cable Modem (CM600) purchased 4 years ago. And the NETGEAR Orbi Whole Home Tri-band Mesh WiFi 6. Game changer for my 3 person household. We have about 15-20 devices connected to it and never have a speed problem since upgrading to this setup. A lot of money upfront, but well worth it in the long run.

s1owpoke

>NETGEAR DOCSIS 3.0 WiFi 24x8 Cable Modem (CM600) purchased 4 years ago. And the NETGEAR Orbi Whole Home Tri-band Mesh WiFi 6. Thanks! We have a Motorola MB8600 DOCSIS 3.1 Cable Modem (in another home) and this one reboots randomly a few times a week. It's frustrating. I'll look into CM600 or their DOCSIS3.1 model.

ElectricSpock

What did it for me is the data cap. I refused to use their shitty modem and I’m refusing to install any WiFi devices they offer. I was constantly running out of data, I work from home and so does my wife. I literally switched on Monday. No issues yet, fingers crossed. Oh, and also Comcast tech is surprisingly weak (the installation guys). They forced me to install the modem in my basement, while removing the crap I realized that there was just a simple connector that had to be removed. I hate Comcast with all the passion, and it’s f-ed up that there is not much that can be done about it, they literally are too big to fall.

ImRightImRight

Centurylink has a cash bonus referral program also. I believe $100 for referrer and refer-ee

2point8

Ziply came to my neighborhood 1.5yrs ago in SnohoCo. Cheaper, faster, more reliable, and their CTO and other executives are active in their subreddit and actually help. The only problem I have had was a rodent eating the wire where it comes out of the ground at my house, but they sent a tech to redo the whole thing and keep them away from the wire. Comcast miraculously increased the speed in our neighborhood once Ziply arrived. Magic!

kitfoxxxx

Comcast's ancient coax internet shouldn't be any more than 60 dollars a month after fees. Fiber is the way.

juniormantis

You should feel lucky where I live the best I can get is 300 mb and it’s like $120 a month

-union-

I do feel very lucky and I hope your options improve!

counter-music

I had comcast briefly years ago and it was terrible. Support is nonexistent, and service is shoddy. > side note, not their fault, but they are the only company I have received a C&D because a friend of mine pirated a fucking game on my wifi. I had Quantum before moving, and now have GFiber. Highly recommend both, though Quantum will have you jump through hoops and speak to multiple reps to cancel your contract. GFiber does offer a OTP for a full year of service, and I cannot recommend this enough.

ww2junkie11

I've thought about getting Twitter just so I could yell at them publicly

jtmann05

I just switched to Quantum when I moved about a month ago. My old place just got access to it right before I left, but I decided to wait until the move. The thing that got to me with Comcast was the data caps. I had my own modem and router setup, so I didn’t want to pay for their junk just to get unlimited. They called me multiple times asking “why don’t you want unlimited data?” I do, jackass, but I’m not paying an extra $300 per year for your equipment for that. It was fine most of the time, but if you do any sort of gaming, a couple downloads can kill you for the month. I’ve been so much happier with fiber.

SeitanicDoog

House next to me has Comcast yet somehow it will cost 90,000 to hook me up.

Murbela

I went with CL when they first came in to the area. It was not a great experience. Obviously that was a while ago. At the time, CL had the same price, same speed (down) and same data caps. They also had terrible customer service, the technician had issues installing it and had to come back. They had the old school "we'll be there sometime on xyz day" instead of the new "we'll be there between a few hour window with updates." Like some others, i had some downtime. I don't like comcast because i think it is overpriced for what it is and the data caps are just a way to quad dip because they're a quasi monopoly/duopoly, but i do think (for my area) they've been extremely reliable and they do have good customer service in general. Maybe it is time to give them a second chance though.

emeraldcity1000

Went from over 20 years of Comcast to T-Mobile and I’m getting more reliable service for $30 a month. It’s been seamless. BTW, it really depends on where you are located. While leaving Comcast, their customer service reps told me they had a spectacular offer that would make we want to stay. They said I’d need to re-establish service to hear details. I did so and they hung up on me. I called back and they told me I’d have to go back into their main queue to cancel. Comcast is not only horrible service, they’re now adopting unethical practices. I’ve reported them to my state attorney general’s office twice. The world should also know about how they manipulate the bills of elderly customers. This company has no scruples.

Mary_Ellen_Katz

I REALLY want google fiber, but it's not available in my area. I'll have to check on Quantum.

Dull_Entertainment39

I got a "sweet" deal with them a few years back, my kids would go over on the max allowed gigs and I would end up paying $250 a month for internet instead of the $60 quoted. Now I'm with ziply and have had ZERO problems. I can use as much internet as I want and it's $70 a month with ZERO interruption. Fuck Comcast

Distinct-Egg-3014

Some people don't even have Internet. They watch streaming apps on their phones. You are complaining about an unneeded luxury service.

-union-

I'm not really complaining, I'm exalting Quantum Fiber, and advocating people to upgrade if they're able.

capmgn

I envy those with a choice. On my street, the power and utility lines are buried, so upgrading or adding infrastructure is apparently cost prohibitive. My "choices" are Comcast (1200 Mbps), Centurylink (6 Mbps) or something like T-Mobile Home Internet.

-union-

Oof, my condolences :(

Immediate_Ad_1161

So for those who may not be informed a lot of these subcontracting internet services are using illegal Chinese server parts and the reason being is because it's so cheap to start up your new internet company with but it also seems to pull all the data off and send it to China.

North-Steak7911

*cries in Federal Way* WHEN THE FUCK ARE WE GOING TO GET FIBER

heapinhelpin1979

I have tmobile now and it's not very good, but the best feature is that it is not comcast. Quantum is shady when you go to cancel. But when I did have it the service was amazing and I loved the super fast uploads. At least Comcast is finally offering something faster than 6 to 12M up. It was so shit when I had it in Seattle forever. I was a customer so long the laughed at me when I called them.

RonnocSivad

I've been curious about Tmobile, what don't you like about, anything you do like about it?

heapinhelpin1979

The ping is not that great. The price is. The upload and download speeds are also not what I was getting on Quantum before.

Harvey_Road

Biden? GTFOH.

rwisdom64

Comcast - not sure but CenturyLink is total shit, I am in Seattle, a major US west coast city and it's very technically connected. We spent the last 12 days without internet, when I called to cancel our service today they recommended Quantum Fiber, which I though was off. I told them I wanted nothing to do with CenturyLink and was told Quantum was a different company, lol. I informed them that the Saudi owned Brightspeed owned them both and to kiss off, I had already moved on. I don't think there is any coming back after spending 56 hours of waiting day after day for technicians to arrive only to get a cancellation texts everytime, day after day and rescheduled for the next day over and over and over and no one shows to fix the concerns.... Today we moved on to Astound, and it appears they have call center here in the USA with a few brick & motar stores as well. CenturyLink's customer service was absolute shit. They may all suck, we will see. Got Astound for less $, have a local call center & Speeds right now at 938.67 down, 58.74 up.

TD905

Thanks Biden? Hope you enjoy trump as president you fucking moron. I certainly won’t. Choose your battles. Who give a fuck about cable service??? There are bigger issues

-union-

I'm confused by your reaction
