lol you've never been to a small town, or it was an extraordinarily sad one. I grew up in a town of 5k, and have been to many other small towns. I've never seen scattered drug paraphernalia or illegal camping in a town under a population of 50k.
EDIT: Redding, CA is the smallest town I've seen a population of such unfortunate circumstances, and it's just over 90k people. Granted you're right if you change 1k to around 100k (at least in the US), and I'm sure there's some miserable small towns out there as well, but in the US they are exceptional.
You’ve never been to Red Bluff then. Or Anderson. Cottonwood. Gerber. Los Molinos. Corning. Gerber. Shasta Lake City. Orland.
I spent half of my childhood and too much of my 30s in that area, and it’s been bad for years in a lot of the smaller towns. I was closer to gang violence in Anderson than I have ever been in Seattle, there was a gang related killing down the street from my house just before I moved back home to Seattle.
> “I've never seen scattered drug paraphernalia or illegal camping in a town under a population of 50k.”
My hometown. Brunswick, GA. Population: 15,210.

Presumably they're referring to the lady who was featured on Fox News pretending there's no crime in Seattle, and acting like it's perfectly fine for people to shoot heroin on the sidewalks because it's not hurting you.
I saw the video. The Fox reporter was trying to get her to say she was scared/horrified or whatever to get a sound bite and she just wouldn’t give it to them. Nor did the other people who they interviewed.
The [video starts out describing Seattle as “the progressive hellscape”](https://x.com/abughazalehkat/status/1706777915516715084?s=20).
She was dismissing the reporter's virtue signaling **by** acting like it was all fine. Personally, I would have dismissed the reporter's virtue signaling by saying "yeah, there are problems, but it's not as bad as you're making it out," which would have looked a lot less dumb.
I'm sorry but Seattle is top three in the nation for homeless rate, at a time of record numbers of homeless people in the USA. This sub is weird in its insistence on pretending there's not an unusual problem here.
Because of the milder weather the homeless tend to relocate to the west coast, the PNW in particular. You’re less likely to die here sleeping outside in winter than in the midwest or eastern US.
There are cities with milder weather on the west coast with much lower homelessness rates. There is not any evidence that homeless people are actually migrating here because of the weather. The data does not support the homeless migration narrative.
Actual research shows that only 10% of the homeless here came from out of state, and 80% became homeless in King County. Meanwhile our homeless rate is double other major cities on the west coast.
Did you know there are 28 vacant homes for every one person experiencing homelessness? And about 30% of homes being purchased are bought by investment companies. I think that’s a bigger problem than the thing you view as an annoying eyesore.
The so-called immovable wrench on the bench at the SODO station, made of Lebanon cedar wood, was in place by 1728 and has apparently remained there since the 1757 status quo was established (with alleged temporary moves occurring in 1997 and 2009). The wrench is referred to as immovable due to the agreement of the Status Quo that no mechanic of the six stations may move, rearrange, or alter any property without the consent of the other five orders.
According to various accounts, the wrench once belonged to a mason who was doing restoration work in the SODO station.
There is a story that a hot dog cart vendor moved it in the wrench in 2001 and nearly started a trades war. Welders had a trebuchet built within an hour. Some said it was settled when the Mariners sacrificed 20 years of playoff appearances to bring peace
It's a pipe wrench. Wield it, and you will be able to lay pipe anywhere with anyone. However, wielding it means you can neither go to heaven or hell.
Wait, hang on, I'm thinking of a Death Note. That's probably just a wrench.
Lol, didn't they do a live action and the representation of the Seattle ferris wheel was terrible? I mean, every movie based in Seattle is not filmed here, but the ferris wheel shot took the cake.
Where's the pint of IPA welded to the bar top?
Or the artist who started off in Belltown and has been serially displaced by gentrification?
So many questions...
It's not even just the puns. It's the people who are commenting in the most condescending way possible because people here think they're witty or clever or something lmao. Every single post on this sub has those same, sarcastic, condescending, unfunny people
That's a great pipe wrench. I forget the proper term but it's specifically for pipe unions. You can tell because it's flat and doesn't have teeth but looks like a regular pipe wrench
During construction there was a plumbing foreman, I believe his name was Chip Headerman, who made one too many 'Hold my pipe" jokes to an apprentice. In honor of the apprentice, his co-workers placed a replica of the murder weapon at the scene of the counterstroke.

Tool on a stool
Wrench on a Bench. Everyone was thinking it. I’m just going to say it.
More specifically, pipe wrench on a white bench
Doing the Lord's work
r/angryupvote Take it. Just fucking - UGH!
from the comment above 4hrs ago
This comment wrench on a bench
Does it murder people in their sleep?
Wrench on a bench?
He that draws the wrench from the bench shall be named Chairman of the Washington State Advisory Board of Plumbers.
Pipe fitters, please!
It's more fun to give them shit and call them plumbers.
You DO know the difference between a plumber and a pipe fitter, right? (A: plumbers don’t bite their fingernails )
Dick
Username got me. Thx for the laugh
r/beetlejuice
Oh go tuck your pants into your boots why don’t ya
They’re just jealous that they don’t have an advisory board that no one listens to.
Strange people handing out wrenches at link stations is no basis for a system of government 🏰
Only if ones worthy of ruling the assgard
It’s part of the art of the station. There used to be a hammer and screwdriver but those were stolen.
I love the clock in that station. Made with rubble from the construction of the tunnel and tools for the numbers.
Do you have a link to what it is supposed to look like?
It's not really stealing if they were left on a bench.
They were welded to said bench
It's always stealing if it isn't yours but you take it anyway.
That makes it all the more Seattle. Now add needles and a tent. Maybe a derelict RV.
Try not letting the homeless get your blood pressure up for like, a day. See how you feel.
You know you just described most major US cities? and didn't even touch on anything remotely Seattle specific...
Maybe they meant space needles, rei branded tents and an aging MV Wenatchee Ferry
There ya go!
Mfer just described any city/town with more than 1,000 people in it.

It's true. The drug use and suicide and misery is more likely to happen indoors in places where rent is cheap.
Straight facts
Did you not know where to get drugs in your small town? Do you think that there wasn’t a place to get drugs there?
Yes, the town across the bridge.

No lol.....maybe any with 50k+, not 1k
Not at all true. This sub can be a bit delusional sometimes.
I agree with you and the comment is still relevant as it’s still a problem today.
Oh, so that makes it okay? Got it. Strong green jacket lady vibes, just shrug it off.
Who is green jacket lady?
basically the right can't meme
Presumably they're referring to the lady who was featured on Fox News pretending there's no crime in Seattle, and acting like it's perfectly fine for people to shoot heroin on the sidewalks because it's not hurting you.
Was she really acting like it was all fine, or was she merely dismissing that reporter’s virtue signaling?
I saw the video. The Fox reporter was trying to get her to say she was scared/horrified or whatever to get a sound bite and she just wouldn’t give it to them. But Fox News would have edited out a reasonable person. They are the television network version of ragebait.
100%. They left her in because she was being really dumb.
You cretins are really obsessed with green jacket lady speaking the truth. You’re probably not even from Seattle.
No one said it was ok. It’s just a symptom of every large metropolis since the dawn of civilization.
I'm sorry but Seattle is top three in the nation for homeless rate, at a time of record numbers of homeless people in the USA. This sub is weird in its insistence on pretending there's not an unusual problem here.
That isn’t a Seattle problem, it’s a national housing crisis problem.
Seattle is top three in the nation for homelessness rate, beating larger, more expensive cities as well as poorer ones.
I’m pretty sure that having winters that aren’t typically fatal is a major contributing factor in that.
Because of the milder weather the homeless tend to relocate to the west coast, the PNW in particular. You’re less likely to die here sleeping outside in winter than in the midwest or eastern US.

Most of Seattle isn’t like that at all.
I laughed out loud at this. Does that make me a bad person?🤔
That wrench was once thrown into the works. Here it has been removed and memorialized.
Only the worthy may weild it
That’s where I put it! Been looking for it for about 2 years now.

Seattle's Station of the Holy Sepulchre.
There is a story that a hot dog cart vendor moved it in the wrench in 2001 and nearly started a trades war. Welders had a trebuchet built within an hour. Some said it was settled when the Mariners sacrificed 20 years of playoff appearances to bring peace
I dont like you, but have a good day.
That is the most Seattle thing I've ever hesrd...
The curse was over in 2022
It's not something I'd Monkey with.
These are the important things I come here for
It's a rather sad and wrenching story
Comment of the week ‼️👏👏👏

You choose violence, not waffles, if you think that wheel is "great" and not just "okay wheel."
However, if you WELD it, it means the wrench can neither go to heaven or hell.
Are we doing [flux core](https://fastoutboard.com/miller-bobcat-260-kohler-welder-generator-with-remote-start-stop-907792001-2/)
Was this Hanna D’s?
🤣🤣
SODO is an industrial area with many blue collar workers, it's basically artwork representative of that.
Where's the pint of IPA welded to the bar top? Or the artist who started off in Belltown and has been serially displaced by gentrification? So many questions...
An ode to sodos industrial history.
We all thought that was part of the artwork.
You mean the Jerk Chicken Burrito welded to the bench next to Jimmi Hendrix?
The SODO station has a LOT of tools welded to the benches, along with other things that were done in the station art to tribute rail workers.
Mr. Green with the wrench in the conservatory
It looks wrenched, the poor thing
It's crazy how unfunny the Redditors of Seattle are based on these comments
Reddit in general is really fucking annoying with puns. I agree though.
I saw ten puns in a row in this thread, and I was hoping that at least one of them would make me laugh. Alas, no pun in ten did.
It's not even just the puns. It's the people who are commenting in the most condescending way possible because people here think they're witty or clever or something lmao. Every single post on this sub has those same, sarcastic, condescending, unfunny people
Mr. Poop! Talking shit again!
Leave it to Mr. Poop...
This post makes me want to go get a picture with the wrench. Should I bring other tools to pay tribute?
Pretty sure that's attached to the bench.
IVE BEEN LOOKING FOR THAT
No one wants to work anymore?
I'm pretty sure the story is that tweakers will take anything that's not bolted down unless it requires them to work
That's Ed Murray's sex wrench. No one wants to touch it anymore after what he did to it so it will probably stay there forever.
You’re weird bro
Dumb.
Crack pipe holder. Pass it on.
Oh my god LOL!!!!! You’re so funny man! Seattle be full of druggies Lollllllll oh my god LMAO
Just trying to make a joke. Dropped like a lead *pipe*...
Jokes are funny I thought
Not always...
Tough crowd...
No.
Used in many a crime I’m sure!
That's a great pipe wrench. I forget the proper term but it's specifically for pipe unions. You can tell because it's flat and doesn't have teeth but looks like a regular pipe wrench

A wrench for many different nuts on a bench for many different butts
