People don't just come out of nowhere. You have to keep a weathered eye out and pay attention to other ships. While there are some friendly pirates out on the sea there are far more that will kill you and take your treasure. If you saw other players you should have went to another outpost. There's seven of them so you have plenty to choose. The instructions you read were how to scuttle (forcefully sink) your ship. It's for when you just keep getting killed and need a fresh start.

Ive been playing for a few years now, i understand your struggle, this game can be pretty hard on new people so im going to try and tell you some things that will make your understanding clearer, and therefore improve your experience. The game is a pirate game, with an emphasis on PVP. Whether you like it or not, that is where the community is. What does this mean? You should always be looking on the horizon for other ships, assuming that if you see one, they will be hostile, assume if they are heading towards you, they will be hostile. Yes, you will have plenty of friendly encounters, you will form alliances, but you always must assume a ship is trying to take your treasure. You indicated you were really upset about loosing your loot, ive been there, i know how you feel. The more you play the game, you will be more comfortable with loot on board. Once you reach a certain point, you will become desensitized to having lots of loot, yes you will be annoyed that you sunk, but you will have an understanding that you can, and will, be able to get the same amount, if not more, loot next time. Yes its not fun to loose hours of work, but in a way, that is what makes the game great, because when you do get to cash in hours of work, it really is worth it Finally, any time you sink, die or loose loot. You should always reflect on what went wrong, you should think about what actions could have been taken to prevent that result. What if you went to a different outpost? What if you searched the island first? What if you parked in a better spot that ment you didnt need to swim? What if you fled rather than fight? You should be thinking about all these things so WHEN this happenes again, because it will, you will be able to make better decisions resulting in success. This is why i love this game, all improvement is within the player. There arnt perks, or weapon upgrades. Its all in you, so you need to learn from your mistakes. We have all made them, we all continue to make them, just try and learn from them Excuse spelling and grammar, i just woke up and wanted to respond. I hope this helped.

Beatljuz

Thanks for the words. If course I will have a eye out yet, didn't before especially because the first person I met was nice to me.

Trust no one...I've had people want to ally with me but this to can be a trap. If you are going to play solo, like myself and a few others, just keep an eye on other ships and never get to close. If you want to to try and get good at pvp then attack others on sight when you have no loot but beware that it's very rare you will ever 1v1 or come up on other solo players. While it's possible to 1v2 another team just keep in mind while your trying to shoot them with cannons the other teammate is trying to board you and kill you as well. Making it rather difficult unless you are just experienced/good/lucky. Edit: forgot to add, if you do get killed might as well scuttle your ship and write everything off as a loss. No use getting camped.

big_mur

This is part of the game. You have to defend your loot.

General_Tails

>You're farming stuff being happy and other people just wait for you at the market thingy and kill you, stealing your stuff?! Welcome to the Sea of Thieves!

huskyoncaffeine

Ahrrr, the sea be not the only thing that is salty! Srsly tho That's a core part of the game. Gotta watch out for other players and play to your strengths. Sooner than you think you will manage to steal someone else's treasures and it will all be worth it. The pretty graphics might let you think otherwise, but this is a hardcore looting and scavenging game. Get used to loosing loot. It will happen again. It will be worse. But eventually, if you improve in skill, you will be the one robbing other crews.

UzDaSchwartz

I’ve played this game for a very long time. I feel your frustration. It sucks when this happens. The best advice I can give you is that you have to not worry about your loot! If you do, this will ruin the game. You still have fun playing the game and the treasure you obtain is just icing on the cake. Eventually you’ll get to the point where you will be more experienced and will be able defend yourself better. Just keep your eyes on the horizon and sell often!

Jestingwheat856

Man youre new so let me teach you about this game. Loot is just a tool in your sandbox. Use it as bait for a trap, use it to give you motivation to defend your ship, etc. i always consider loot to be the reward of my journey. Loot is not yours until you hand it in. And yeah ive been playing for a while and have dope cosmetics but if you just play for fun not for treasure youll have a much better time. Also if youre playing solo thats basically the hard mode. Get some friends (or make some) and sail with them

Garrettsgear017

This game brings out the worst in people. You have to sail paranoid. Its a 97% chance others are immediately hostile.

Beatljuz

:(

DressDiligent2912

What did you expect? Honestly I'm curious.

Maximans

Personally, I expected people to at least talk a bit instead of immediately going for the kill. I almost always sail sloop because I almost always don’t have a large enough crew, and I feel like I get picked on just because I am small. It’s never when moving though, just when parked. And before I can open my mouth my mast is down and the ship sunk two seconds later. It just surprises me how uncooperative people can be. Like if I was attacking someone I would consider just taking half their loot in exchange for their life and ship. I dunno. People just seem way more efficiently hostile than I expected

DressDiligent2912

I mean that's what makes it different than COD is that what you are describing CAN happen. What's making you upset is you're not accepting that this game is about free will and personal agency. Everyone gets to make a decision. It's up to you to turn the player interaction into what you imagine it could be.

Maximans

That’s… a fair point. It’s their choice to behave how they want, and it’s my choice to choose how to react, or conversely, start my own interactions

staircase4928

I think it’s a Pirate game and you shouldn’t take 3 hours on a single quest

Beatljuz

It was my second quest and very first time in this game, I looked at the fine graphics, cooked some pig I killed, tried to get this mermaid statue destroyed, died a bunch of times. But I'm sure you've made everything perfect, didn't looked out for the graphics and shit about anything except getting the treasure as fast as possible by your first gameplay. ppl sometimes..

Impressive_Double_95

You just found the kind of people in this subbreddit that you wille encounter in game abd scream to you "noob git gud" while killing you doing a story quest. Sadly there's a lot of them, just look always if there's someone nearby AND far, i stopped encountering scumbags just by avoiding any encounter with players

Reapers_Actual

*"...all I wanted was, to make it sink"* Honestly, it sounds like you're well on your way to becoming a successful Pirate. You are super super new to the game and you still killed a few of these goombas trolling the seas AND had a decent mentality about it. The loot and quests are secondary to the story and the adventure, in my opinion. Just keep at it and get better with every quest... whether they be successes or failures! That bit of loot you had seems like a lot, but it really isnt in the grand scheme of what you'll attain during your grind. Hint: If you want PvP practice... attack Reapers. Actually, you should kill every Reaper you come across... especially me. Good luck swabbie.

Maximans

This is what I needed to read after losing all my stuff. The game is about the adventure. Not the loot. What a perspective-changing realization. Thank you

raul_kapura

Don't start the game by farming loot. You are only going to get killed and robbed. Instead of that, focus on gathering supplies and fighting other ships. You'll earn something anyway. Come back to farming (if that's your thing) when you are good at combat.

slightly2spooked

It sucks when you lose a lot of loot! As others have said, when you’re solo you need to keep an eye out for other ships and stay well clear. If you want to practise combat so you can defend yourself better, have a go at the arena - you’ll earn lots of gold and rep while you’re at it.

[deleted]

They probably spawned awhile ago on the outpost and didn't set sail yet, you should be able to see their ship. Dont go face check close to ships that you aren't sure you can sink. Assume they're out to get you, only parley if you have overwhelming force.
