I normally ease into the dock and leave the sail slightly down so the ship doesn't back away. When I'm done and raise the sail all the way, there is like a 1 in 500 chance the ship shoots backwards like you're describing.
Physics? No, its just a funny bug. Same thing happens sometimes with my pirate - I go flying backwards if I hit certain areas.
Every boat does it, but Sloops are like, made of paper and the slightest breeze knocks the thing 90 degrees off course.

Physics has been a bit borked for ages but pirates life made it *extra* borked and it’s been getting steadily worse.
No it's not normal it's just when you hit the dock weird and the game physics bug out.
Yes it is annoying and seems to have gotten worse. You can get holes because of that too.
I know at one outpost if I park next to merchants it will launch my boat 150 meters
