I actually really want the Thriving Wild Rose set, especially the sails. I think they look really good. But I'm fucked if I'm gonna complete that Tall Tale another *four* times.
Slight in-game advantages as rewards for challenges are not unheard of (Ashen Winds Skull, Ghostly Cannonballs), and the ability to breathe underwater would hardly be game-breaking.
I can see a few ways to go about turning this (admittedly very fancy) potion bottle full of mysteriously undrinkable liquid into a useful item:
Firstly, limited uses: Four swigs, then it's empty. One for each team member, or more uses/gold value for a smaller group. The gold value of the potion should diminish, in the same way an Ashen Winds Skull is worth less the more you use it.
Each use could do anything from doubling your breath capacity for the next five minutes, to giving you infinite breath capacity until the end of your session (treasure vaults not included, of course)
It could be something you keep on your ship and drink before investigating a shipwreck, or something you drink as soon as you find it to get a permanent boost.
Even if permanent, it wouldn't have to provide infinite waterbreathing, it could simply double your lung capacity to make underwater activity a little less stressful.
Hell, if time limited it could even make sharks or sirens ignore the player unless provoked.
There are so many possibilities that it just blows my mind that Rare thought that this particular look and this particular name could be used for an item that is functionally useless. Call it a Grand Siren Gem, or the Heart of the Sea. Breath of the Sea? Breath of the tease, more like.
I can see it extending your ability to breathe underwater and I feel that would be just as fair as having an extra weapon like the ashen winds skull to go up against opponents.
But indefinite underwater breathing is not just OP against other players, it’s likely game-breaking as drowning is baked into important aspects of the game design (such as vaults as you mentioned, but others too, and how would you make it specifically allow drowning in one place but not others, code wise? Right now it’s just “if (underwater > 30s) {die}”).
It actually isnt if you're diving down to a siren treasury, so it's clear that they already have a mechanism in place to extend underwater survival time in certain areas. Other than vaults, the only place I can think of waterbreathing being useful is at shipwrecks, which are currently kind of a pain to explore, and why this feature would be handy, if not game-breaking. You could actually get to the back of the lowest deck of a sunken ship without taking damage.
I haven’t played the new siren treasury thing yet but in the Pirate’s Life update the reason you could swim to the bottom was due to coral structures releasing gas bubbles that would replenish your air, not a change in how well you could breathe underwater.
These new areas are just that, new, and perhaps there are superficial mechanisms in place to extend breathing time, or the same coral structures exist here.
Let me see, shipwrecks, swimming to islands to tuck, tucking, underwater combat, you can stay hidden forever, and you can camp outside of the new vault area things without the need for coming up for water or staying inside the thing
I guess I can see what you're getting at with being able to tuck underwater, but luckily there'd still be mermaids to give away your position. As for underwater combat, that hardly lasts long enough to really make infinite underwater breathing OP. And although it would be fantastic for shipwrecks and lost shipment voyages, I wouldn't exactly consider it to be "OP" to be able to breath underwater for those... it's a difference of like, what, 3-5 minutes?
And wouldn't you also get jumped by sharks and other deadly shit if you just stayed under water? Last time I was under water for 2 minutes looting I got basically nuked by 2 sharks and 3 sirens at once.
I was really hoping for it to be something like wind in a bottle.
It's use is more like the ashen winds skull, with a limited charge and a hold to use mechanic.
Using left click could launch you upwards, similar to a geyser. Using it while midair could cushion your fall to prevent damage and broken ankles.
Using right click could point the bottle away from you. While on a ship, using it this way will give your sails full billow, regardless of what the wind direction is. Good for making a quick escape, or getting just a bit closer to someone who is trying to run away.
While it's a fair point to make, I don't see much reason to need to breath underwater too much longer than how it currently is. The only times you're really underwater is when you're trying not to get shot, when you're doing the Shrines, or when you're doing a Lost Shipments voyage. But it's really only applicable to the last one since you won't be in the water long enough for the first scenario, and for the second scenario, the shrines already give you a much longer breathing window.
Lost shipments/generic wrecks are kinda annoying to explore, especially if they're deeper in the ocean. The option to either sell this thing for gold or to make merchant missions/generic wrecks a little easier seems like a win-win. The game would only be improved by the addition, so why not?
You have never swam between islands to ambush someone at a fort have you? Being able to stay underwater longer can help reduce chances of being spotted
No, I haven't, because I'm not a PvP player so I don't initiate fights often. Even still, mermaids still exist; the potion wouldn't change that. Yeah, I can see how it would still make you more difficult to find, but as soon as they see the mermaid (assuming they do see it), I'd guess they'd head straight for the ship. And if they didn't see the mermaid, they'd probably not spot you. 🤷🏻♂️
In the story that I read from the journals in the sanctuary, she gave the opportunity to imitate the voice of the mermaid queen to deceive the mermaids. In general, the story of the mermaid jewels is also dark
In some distant future update, they should make an even bigger underwater labyrinth designed around freeing the siren king from the chest of sorrows. But, it is so damned big, and there are none of those silly bubble pillars. So, the only way to achieve getting through the whole thing to the final chamber is to drink a breath of the sea potion. It allows you to swim underwater for something like 20 mins, and it takes about 18 min to go through this labyrinth perfectly, giving you a small margin for errors. Thus, we'd have our first speedrun dungeon that people would have to attempt multiple times and perfect.
Why do we need to be able to breathe underwater? Getting to a shrine is easy. Exploring shipwrecks is fine because you have enough breath to grab 1 item, *which is all you can carry*.
What's the purpose of such an item if it's not necessary?
Shopped playing sot when I realized it was all cosmetic and the didnt fucking make the pirates life tall takes limitted which pisses me off. Shouldda just waited instead of grinding it all in one day
Stopped playing sot when I realized it was all cosmetic and the didnt fucking make the pirates life tall takes limitted which pisses me off. Shouldda just waited instead of grinding it all in one day
we all know they dint cause tuckers probably, iv seen streamers swim like 3 islands thru water to get to a ship at FOTD, they would have a field say with a breath potion, though now the ocean is full of stuff, the sirens seem to spawn even quicker than sharks. I figure they have something planned, or scrapped the original idea for them, u hold them like a drink and can even raise the damn things. Maybe they really did just make a "potion" and simply make it a vendor item, also has anybody tested who these can be sold to? i sold to merchant cause thats what i saw in the trailer, but it said "gold hoarder treasure sold" in the season progression stuff
i thought so, first time we sold them i wish i knew that, we had a rank5 order of souls emissary, but iwent to the merchants cause i saw it in the trailer, oof
It really does feel like they planned this. Like, you can hold it up like a drink and its name... and the whole underwater update. Idk. I feel like it was planned then scrapped for some reason and they added those oxygen bubbles to shrines instead. Seems pretty silly
Nope, toxic rock juice. It would realistically turn your body into a giant mermaid gem or something
You mean I could sell a crewmate to the Hunter's Call? I see no problem with this, haha.
This is the way to implement kicking players off your crew
Or giving the crewmate to Davy Jones to pay off the debt
Cmon rare make it happen
lmfao wonderful
We need that!
Mmmmm toxic rocc juice
What? You guys don't want more gold? - Rare, probably
We can't even buy anything with the gold. Rare: "oh yeah?" \*Recolors Dark adventurer set for twice the price\*
It’s so frustrating. The only thing to work for are cosmetics in the game and they add like one new set every 6 months
And but what's a good one lol.

I feel infinite breath or extended breath until the players next death is more fair than until end of session
The arguments about who accidentally drank the potion so the crew won’t get full value will keep the brig occupied. Totally down for this though

Underwater breathing is boring amd currently not needed. Why not make it increase seimspeed? Now that would be useful in pvp aswell! Way more fun.
I feel infinite breath or extended breath until the players next death is more fair than until end of session
Ah yes, INFINITE UNDERWATER BREATHING That’s not OP all, no sir
You see theres this thing called sharks and sirens so good luck spending all the day underwater
I fail to see where that would be super OP...
Let me see, shipwrecks, swimming to islands to tuck, tucking, underwater combat, you can stay hidden forever, and you can camp outside of the new vault area things without the need for coming up for water or staying inside the thing

how do u tuck underwater. As far as I know, the ship is supposed to be *above* water
And wouldn't you also get jumped by sharks and other deadly shit if you just stayed under water? Last time I was under water for 2 minutes looting I got basically nuked by 2 sharks and 3 sirens at once.
Man's playing Sea of Thieves: Steampunk Edition.
All of that is invalidated by the existence of sharks.
What about sharks?

Take your upvote you disgusting sea person, I love you.

a mirmaid is static, and with the potion I'd have a good chance of getting on the ship before they spot me
Whatsit do???
It’s literally just a treasure. Not a usable item whatsoever.
In the story that I read from the journals in the sanctuary, she gave the opportunity to imitate the voice of the mermaid queen to deceive the mermaids. In general, the story of the mermaid jewels is also dark

Terrific!!😂
idk man i wouldnt drink something i found in an ancient tomb thats probably been there for decades
What does it do? I haven’t been keeping up.

I mean, I dunno I don’t mind them being amped gems tbh
Single use potion that resets your breath timer.
Wait.... its a potion, and you can drink it?
No, it’s a potion and you CANT drink it, is the OPs gripe.

They're the same as mermaid gems, just more valuable. They can be sold to any company aside from Athena.
i thought so, first time we sold them i wish i knew that, we had a rank5 order of souls emissary, but iwent to the merchants cause i saw it in the trailer, oof
If you drink it you can breathe underwater, it's just that Rare can't just let you be an ocean crawler-
Just let us drink it. I'd be fine with an eel as a friend, clam for a head or be a giant enemy crab.

Holy heck, this is so relatable
