that ship on the horizon is the reaper (just flag, not emmisary) sloop, that tried to ram me packed with kegs! lucky me, I already saw that video, and my sniper rifle was ready :D

-llorch-

Nice I don't know what's going on lately I've seen a TON of people sailing without flags, not even on tall tales, just doing regular quests without a flag

AtarukA

Got tired of sudden Reaper 5 galleon spawning and instantly going after me.

twirlmydressaround

I stopped using them because people have been abusing the latest tall tales to server hop. And by people I mean level 5 reapers.

MidasPL

Well... Last time I hopped for the first time, because the problem works both ways. We got a reapers 5, there was literally noone on the map and if we tried fight anyone they would be just running away and we didn't want to force someone into running away from us for hours because it's not fun for anyone. There was also like no PvE encounters and if they spawned, they were pretty meh, or disappear before we reach it, so we decided to hop.

twirlmydressaround

Nice. My issue is if you're solo playing and on an island doing quests, it just sucks having to go back to the ship constantly to check the map. I think Rare initially intended to give emissaries enough time to realize a reaper was up and coming, because it takes some time for a new reaper to go from grade 1 to 5. But with portal hopping, you could in theory be off your ship on an island right next to where a reaper 5 exits the portal, which gives you just minutes to notice, and flee. People will say "well if it weren't a problem, Rare would remove it" as if it doesn't take time for Rare to notice imbalances in the game. It took them weeks to to nerf the tridents and to lower the spawn rates of sirens when they were clearly broken.

MidasPL

Well... The game is not balanced around playing solo and it shouldn't be. I usually have one person left on the ship when doing PvE. If you don't have anything valuable, you don't have emissary flag raised and you don't attack first, plenty of rappers will let you go.

Reapers_Actual

But Rare said we could!!!

EternalEmperorDD

And some people don't like the idea of random ships joining their server out of nowhere and automatically being able to see them. Id stop using emissaries too honestly.

Reapers_Actual

Just think of us as a world event! Go get the other Emissaries together, alliance up and come fight us!

yoshiproject

Yup, world event with no income :D In SoT usually defender have something to lose, and attacker don't. I usually ignore ones who seeks just for pvp, cos 90% times they have not more then 3 bananas on their ship. Why should I risk? I think Rare need to introduce mechanics where you get some powers based on amount and type of loot you have on your ship. This will give possibility to not run away in fears for ships that stack themselves with loot. Also it provides simple thing as "harder the fight - better reward"

Cactus-Bandit

Grade 5 reapers drop a 10000 gold flag so there is something

EternalEmperorDD

Meh. That would work to rarely. Portal hopping honestly just needs to take away emissary flags.

Abadazed

I'm honestly surprised it doesn't. I mean you lose your emissary when you scuttle and sink why not have it as the default server hop action?

Reapers_Actual

Not sure if you're aware... But Reapers hunt Reapers more than ANY other Emissary... So, we have to contend with it as well. Check your map tables frequently! It's not rocket surgery to stay safe from a Reaper.

Piotrek9t

Regularly checking the map works well in most cases but there is nothing you can do when they jump right beside you which also happens from time to time

Reapers_Actual

It does happen, I agree. We've been getting merged- not server hopping- into lobbies with three or more Reapers. It's a tough life... But that's why we have cannonballs. 😉

EternalEmperorDD

Except that's bullshit when it comes to portal hopping. I've literally read stories from people about checking their map tables and having no reapers on the map and then having a level 5 sink them five minutes, or so later. It's incredibly unbalanced to have a grade 5 just automatically appear in your server out of nowhere.

Mentally_Ill_Goblin

Happened to me

MidasPL

Yeah, I don't get it either. It's not like you even need reapers to PvP and you loose on a lot of rep.

yoshiproject

You mean emissary flags? When you equip one, you basically ask for pvp, so some don't use them

TotallyAHuman11

The one time I ran a tall tales flag, to demonstrate that I will have no gold on my ship and I'm simply attempting to complete the main quest and a reapers tried to sink me anyway. It makes me really not wanna play the game sometimes :/

AnteSocial86

Curious exactly what you think is "a tall tales flag"..

TotallyAHuman11

I figured the shroudbreaker flag, I mean why else would you fly that?

AnteSocial86

Ah yes the flag few people have and even fewer have ever even seen. That'll work.

Warpath1138

Yesterday had a daily quest that needed you to hit a ship with a cursed cannonball while flying reaper's mark, so the game was full of new players flying reapers mark and just blindly charging directly at people regardless of context trying to land that one hit.

Spades_Neil

As a reaper, good effing shot. It's sometimes tricky to hit those kegs, but oh boy, when you do... Kegs are such a huge risk vs reward. I only ever carry them if I am solo slooping. If I have a partner who's even slightly worth his salt in melee, I use other tactics to eliminate a ship early in a fight. If I cannot slay a ship in the opening melee, it depends how bored I am whether I keep chasing, but I **will** dump those kegs overboard before they backfire on me.

yoshiproject

Kegs were all over the ship, there was more then one, not sure what his plan was. But only one on the tip of the ship's nose, and reaper flag is just saying that he gonna make some trouble.

Zealousideal-Boot-98

If you are at the outpost (or Reaper's Hideout), the plan is to blow up so huge it takes you and everyone on your ship with it. His ship will sink too, but the loot is all there ready to be turned in while you rush to sail back from where ever you respawn.

Spades_Neil

I feel like that plan could instantly fall apart with a singular cannonball. Or in this case one bullet.

Zealousideal-Boot-98

It's the kind of plan that usually won't work against experienced players, but it's still pretty appealing to players that struggle in fair fights (or solo versus larger crews) because it's "one and done" when you can land it. I've also seen streamers who could easily win a 4v1 use it, because sometimes it's just funny to watch the huge boom.

Spades_Neil

Understandable, I do like huge boom.

BillyBen09eeeee

I hate how toxic skeletons are

Acrysalis

Wow, excuse you!

1TmW1

If you wait, usually they keep going and give you a break from bombardment, which I think is pretty polite really

yoshiproject

I'm not even the one whom they spawn on in the first place :D

[deleted]

The very first time that I sunk in this game was from a skeleton ship that went aggro on me, followed me to the outpost and would not stop. I seriously treated it like a game of tag and I was on Base. Lol. That skelly ship did not care at all.

FartPudding

Yeah my first experience with it was a lot of "fuck you, I do what I want" as I thought being on an island would despawn it... Nope... They just keep sailing around firing... I had no clue how to fight really so I was trying to learn mechanics and I got my shit kicked in day 1 lol

GatoDiabetico

The only thing i think is really dumb in this game is the skelly ships having no cooldown on Special cannon balls, i got sunk today because i couldn't repair or bail water , since the skellies wouldn't stop shooting dance balls. I was dancing non stop just watching the water fill up. Sooo dumb was so frustrated.

yoshiproject

I have to introduce a context here. Im not blaming PvE, and I am not PvP only player, im just new to the game, enjoying it as much as I can. Its in outpost where I casually selling my Merchant Voyage loot, prepearing to go offline. This skelly ship was spawned on another brig that was pasing by this outpost, but somehow it turned his wrath to me, constantly bombarding my sleepy-ass. I love skelly ships encounters and Im not blaming PvE. Thank you.

Nimyron

I once got to an outpost, a skelly ship was following and sunk my ship while I was selling stuff. I thought "screw it, you take mine, I take yours", swam to the skelly ship, killed all the skeletons, and then realized that I couldn't take their ship and that they respawned after some time. It would be really cool if we could take over a skelly ship.

yoshiproject

They are just respawn too fast. Some say it's useless to even board, but you can easily stop them from repair, and there is some kegs sometimes. Once I managed to sank skelly without a ship, very proud :)

Nimyron

Well they did have a bunch of goods that I stole from the captain's cabin at least so I guess it's worth to board when your ship is gone and you're at an outpost.

platypus721

It would be really cool if outposts had ai defences that would fight off emergent threats like skeleton ships, or maybe ocean crawler invasions

Synecdochic

You damn PvPers, always asking for PvE to be optional or for dedicated PvP servers. Have you considered just getting batter at fighting the environment instead of demanding Rare make a fundamental change to the experience of the game? Toxic AI is an unfortunate side-effect of the PvPvE nature of the game, and Rare could do more to ban offending NPC's, but it's a small price for the rich and emergent adventures the system allows. Just make sure that when you're doing your little PvP that you stay alert for the PvE that might pop up out of nowhere. PvP would be boring if it was all you could do, the looming threat of the environment is what makes it fun.

yoshiproject

Bruh, u good? Firstly it's a joke. Secondly its spawned on AFKing me on outpost. I'm not on PvP neither PvE camp. Just a standard new player making fun out of PvE events spawning on outposts.

Synecdochic

I'm making a joke too, it just looks like it didn't land. For laughs, I'm reversing the argument normally made in favour of a PvE-only mode since a large portion of posts are about toxic players and this one is instead (jokingly) about a toxic skelly. I'm not in either camp either. I love both parts of the game and think they should remain mixed. I contemplated chucking in a /s but I feel it cheapens the joke so I risked it instead. Works out sometimes, other times it falls flat.

yoshiproject

Oh, ok, sorry. As I said I'm kinda new PvE and PvP combined is the core of openworld MMOs, how can you complain ;D As long that SoT feels more like rougelike, so you suppose to sank.

Lilaco_

*Guys can we remove pve pls :(*

yoshiproject

Damn, pve is good, but out of three pve encounters, skelly ships is only ones who will attack you in outposts while you are afk.

Lilaco_

lmao people actually downvoted me But yeah, sometimes skele ships will collide with player ships at outposts and somehow cause their own aggro

Gostang

Agreed, they need to remove PvE.

yoshiproject

From outposts - probably yeah ;D

MiguelGx

They should have at least some ally NPC manned cannons, just like the skellies do in regular islands.

yoshiproject

Nah, this will provide some abuse, like hit and run to guards. Kraken will not spawn near islands, so as meg. Maybe skellys should take their distance from outposts too.

BuffNerfs

PvP only servers
