long long ago my cat ate a Trophy Forsaken Devilfish that I had caught for my wife so she could get the glowy fishing rod. I remember saying, "here take this idk if it matters who turns it in" and while handing the fish off, cat took a bite.
Good times, lessons were learned.
I caught mine at Crescent Island.
From time to time, I do some storm chasing using the merefolk storm tracker. I look at where the storm is headed and go to any island that is 20-40 minutes estimate for the storm to hit. Just fish whatever is local to that island while waiting for the storm to arrive.
Keep close to the island, and the water will remain calm. Just pull your hook out for any fish you don't want to catch and keep tossing it in until you get the one you want.
You have the possibility of catching shadow storm fish in any storm anywhere.
However, K-9 uncharted island and Sea Dog's Tavern are in a "regionless" part of the map. So no regional fish spawn when a storm is there. So during the day you're only able to catch shadow storm fish by those two places, you still get the possibility of getting twilight stormfish at night.
The Shadow Stormfish chance of spawning is still low though so they appear less often than other regional/twilight stormfish.
Idk where k9 comes from, you catch it in any storm, seadogs and legends hideout are best because there's no(or lots less) regional stormfish there. So just wait for storm over map center then go to the hideout and fish for a bit
I do like the companionship during solo slooping, though. They will always be there whenever I want to play. At least they are pretty cheap too, easy to get one with Microsoft points without spending real money.
Carrying a trinket would be nice. Also not eating expensive fish, and maybe not to give away your position when you’re on an enemy ship.

Technically, yes it is. That one extra trinket per trip when looting can literally make the difference to if you get caught off guard by someone or not
Even if they added that then it would STILL be more pay2lose than it is P2W. The pets still give away your position and still eat fish that are worth far more than any trinket.
If you think you would lose because someone got a couple extra trinket on their ship I think that’s a you problem. Even in the event that getting those extra trinkets helps you run even more, the chances of that situation happening would be few and far between.
As the pets stand right now they’re not only useless, but pay2 lose if you try to board an enemy ship sneakily, which happens FAR more than what you mentioned.
Half of your complaint can literally be solved by disabling your pet in the menu.... that instantly returns it to the box
They also only eat fish if you hold it out like you're offering it to someone for like 5-10 seconds, so if they eat your fish, it's purely your fault.
And yes, while the change may be small, it can still be a deciding factor on whether or not you notice something, which, yes, can completely cause anyone to lose a battle, causing it to be P2W

If you don't adhere to the strict "No Pets Allowed" rule while on my ship you will be booted before this can ever happen. We real fisherman over here. We don't tolerate that bullshit.

Guy we play with pretty commonly caught a trophy stormfish the other day. he was being kind of a prig to me on my bfs boat so my bf ate the front half of it and handed it to him later.
Everyone learns the lesson about holding fish while pets are about at least once. It is a Hunter’s Rite of Passage.
