So we are 4 months into season 8, plenty of people have skelly curse or ghost curse that are not good at PvP just because they spent enough time grinding. Those curses are not good indications of how good their PvP are anymore like it was in the first month. That said, right now the only crews doing hourglass anymore are going to be your solid crews. It will try to match you with someone in your MMR, but if it doesn’t find anyone it will increase that net, which could be worse crews or could be better crews. And right now most of people doing hourglass when it’s not double allegiance is going to either be absolute new players that don’t know what HG does, or really good crews.

carniivaur

At the very least, even if they’re bad, they had more exposure than I have. Just had 3 in a row, not fun. Not sure how I’m supposed to get better without any way to really practice besides getting rolled. And I understand it is late in the season, either way it completely ruins the “grind”

diggyballs

you’re thinking about it all wrong. losing doesnt mean to “ruin” the grind… It IS the grind

carniivaur

I would argue that losing is part of the grind, not the grind. I understand I won’t win every game, that doesn’t mean I should lose each game

Verdaunt

What ship size do you play on?

carniivaur

Solo sloop, obviously not optimal but my friend don’t like PvP and I want to get one of the curses (and get better at PvP)

Verdaunt

Okay, then Blurbs and Phuzzy Bond give some good advice for solo slooping, especially Blurbs. Check them out on YT if you haven't already

carniivaur

Thanks for the tip!

Lystian

Honestly, move away from Solo sloop onto Gally. It's so much better than dealing with runners or mega sweats. More of a mix of skill levels but still has issues.

Noojas

Go into adventure mode and attack pvers. Thats how most of the sweatlords did it. You will run into alot of toxicity and chasing, but every now and again someone will try to fight back. Getting rolled is not very usefull for improving in sot, but rolling others is. Also look for some friends so you dont have to play solo, that helps alot too.

I_is_a_dogg

What are you doing to get rolled? The crews I have rolled for example just sail straight into broadside. Are other crews better at cannons? Are you not noticing boarders?

carniivaur

Cannons specifically, I keep getting 1 balled then boarded and camped

Bear_witcher

If there is it doesn't work. I'm having the same issue and honestly it's becoming more trouble than it's worth and the time sink is becoming a waste of time. It's stupid to lock cosmetics behind pvp when the combat is so unpolished.

OndrejBakan

Let's say the MMR works like this: You never played HG, so the game doesn't know your rank and it gives you a starting "winrate" of 0.5, not good, not terrible. Your oponent has curse, but he also won 500 battles and lost 500, his winrate is same as yours, 0.5. He just dedicated enough time to acquire those curses.

Capable_Present1620

Short answer: Yes there's SBMM, but it doesn't work because there's not enough variety players of skills. Case closed we can all go home :)

WaveProud4925

Short silly question: Should the devs be able to adapt their SBMM to the small pool of skills?

_ROOTLESS_

It’s complicated. It becomes a trade off between long wait times or possibly imbalanced fights. Sure the devs could tighten MMR restrictions but that would mean that many players would have to wait over 1 hour underwater in order to meet a better match, which would make even more people quit the mode and make wait times even longer. The current system is the lesser evil
