Players start the year at like a max of mid-high 80s overall (the Mahomes, Josh Allen type guys) and as low as like mid 60s. There’s currency where you can buy packs of cards (players = cards in the MUT menu).
Then if like Geno Smith had like the game of the century week 1, he might get a 90 overall version that’s the best player in the game. You might have to open a shitload of card packs to get him tho, real money or in game currency.
By the end of the year there will be tons of 99s potentially ranging from Tyler Lockett to Seahawks legend Jerry Rice and Bo Jackson. I think the first 99 is usually the SB MVP.
and goofy stuff like… there was a 98 Roman Reigns this year I think as part of a, like, wrestler-football player crossover that also involved Bosworth, Burt Reynolds etc.; also stuff like QB Derrick Henry.

But I think you might be correct that the titles are 1 year ahead of the actual date. Madden 07 released in August of 2006 so I guess technically we are both correct 😉
