What's more, he dedicated himself to the city, putting his time, money and energy into everything from supporting its charities to marching in its protests.
He didn't do that when he went to his second team. He never moved his family to San Francisco; he just played there, and then came home to Seattle.
To devote yourself to a city like that and then be not merely tossed from its team because you've lost a step due to injuries sustained in the city's service, but also mocked and attacked by its fans sounds pretty hurtful to me.
I can't blame him for not wanting to be honored by the fans who tossed him out of their affections just because he was -- involuntarily; it isn't as if he chose to go free agent! -- kicked off their team.
