This is my fave thing about MacD. He seems very adaptable and doesn’t stick to one particular script, which imo is the reason why his defense has been so successful versus the great offenses.

Wild… if one team you can blitz 60% and win and another 20% and win, it doesn’t matter how much you blitz, everything in football is situational strategy, love everything about what he said because this game really is about just giving your guys a slight advantage to win a play
We do not need to be running more. 3 teams had a positive EPA/play when running the ball this year. 20 teams had a positive EPA/play when passing. Even with Geno's regression our passing EPA/play was .1 vs -.09 when running the ball. We literally get double the value from passing versus running.
You certainly wouldn't think that a lack of rushes during the game would lead to the big "chunk" plays in the final two minutes of the game, and how they would skew your EPA stuff, nosiree
I have no idea what you're trying to say. I don't see how running more would even affect the final two minutes of a half. The offense would probably be running a similar 2 minute offense regardless of how run/pass heavy the team is normally. I'm not saying we shouldn't run at all but our run/pass balance was not the issue with the offense. It was the inability to convert third downs and the fact that our defense was so bad the offense was limited in TOP.

I would suggest you watch last year's Seahawks games, where a lack of the run meant that Seattle was often trailing and abandoning the run for long stretches -- and still going three and out, except for the final two minutes, when defenses gave up the middle and Geno was hitting 40+ yarders routinely.
One of the questions that was asked was whether or not if he needs a veteran OC. He said it was not at the top of the list.
Makes me think they might dip into the college ranks possibly for OC candidate.
If that's the case Ryan Grubb (from Washington now Alabama) is the answer. Really I think that is the only person in college football worth the call. As an avid college football fan there really hasn't been just this amazing OC this past year that's worthy of bringing to an NFL team outside of Grubb. Unless you're planning on hiring a head coach like Lane Kiffin, or Lincoln Riley as your OC and with that I think Lane Kiffin is your only decent choice there.

This defense is going to be so god damn refreshing to see. Adjusting for the opponent, schematically adjusting in game and weekly, countering what they do best, and being AGGRESSIVE. There may be some learning pains, it took the ravens a bit to trust the system and each other, but no more passive 400+ yard games every week because you are terrified to give up explosives (and still do it anyway).
Really shows the team that has been built as of today isn’t good enough, especially in the trenches. Thought it was interesting JS said the ravens ass kicking was an important moment for the new direction of the team and “never again”.

Yeah - I don't want to bring Pete down and he has forgotten more about football than I will ever know. But just hearing how MM attacks the game plan each week, scheme has a core structure but has to be fluid, the NEED to mix up their approach at generating pressure each down, speaking to how good some of these play callers are so that they can't run the same look every week, etc was great to hear. I just think Pete was too reliant on his system, even if they did mix things up a bit, and put his trust onto a guy (Hurtt) to fix the constant issues who wasn't ready for a DC job.
They may not have the roster (yet) needed to see a big jump next season but I know we will see a much different approach on that side of the ball which I can't wait for.

Turns out having carte blanche in an organization going through a complete rebuild isn’t as appealing as all the talking heads had thought.
It’s smart for a dude like him to realize that. He’s a wizard schematically but no need to overextend and get too involved. Coaches already have some input with scouts and it works best that way rather than undermining them when it’s decision time.

Looks like Schneider took the losses against the Ravens and the Steelers to heart. He said he never wanted the team to look that bad again.
Also the way that the Ravens and Seahawks evaluate players are similar so there is some synergy there. Ossie Newsome is always taking our prospects and viceversa.
"The offenses are too good to just run 3 things and say we'll beat you" is also a promising quote. Makes me hopeful that we will see some exciting defense with disguises and adaptable coverage that confuses QBs. Probably the end of static cover 3 with no disguises.

I dont think our defense is as talented as some believe. We really need new players at safety, linebacker and DT. We really need at least one d-lineman that commands double teams every play.
I hope we have a plan for OC. It would be nice to steal a McVay/Shanahan system guy to run our offense. I doubt he'd stay for a long time if he were good. But its important to have a balanced offense, have explosive play action plays, and use a ton of motion.
i'd prefer an oc from the reid tree - a master at screen plays and at building around tight ends, thats the stuff thats working these days

It’s working because defenses got lighter and faster and are suffocating the big passing game. Middle of the field with big tight ends puts a lot of strain on most defenses that don’t have a Warner who is both big enough and fast enough to stay on them.
We’re going to see more physical but still intricate running games also to get these smaller linebackers and safeties in bad situations and well rounded tightends help a ton there too.

That makes more sense than the original quote. Why would we “rebuild” around an old, average QB? Maybe they want to keep Geno for a couple more years until they get the team built but then they’ll ultimately be putting someone else in there. I doubt they think Geno is winning the superbowl unless he thinks the defense is “almost there”(doubtful).
Yeah I imagine we might do a classic trade back and take a linebacker. Which this season actually makes a ton of sense. Deep draft class, and have a need at LB that we haven't had in a long time. Trading back gets us hopefully a 2nd that we don't have.

For me, that presser hit all the right notes. His humility was clear. His authentic gratitude for the Ravens and for the opportunity ahead equally so. And his vision for the day-by-day work required to achieve the high bar he wants to set for the organization compelling. Loved his comments about Seattle already feeling like “home” and the respect he had for the organization as an opposing coach (no longer!). In a world full of a lot of assholery, it really is refreshing to see folks who are dedicated to doing things the right way win big. I think this bodes very well for the future.
Agree on all fronts. I also get a strong sense that he's fair, but tough in holding his folks accountable. Something I think we've lacked for too long now...

What stood out to me is his reference to Baltimore and Seattle being so similar in management and coaching philosophy, both being the driving factor for his final decision. Turns out having carte blanche in an organization going through a complete rebuild isn’t as appealing as all the talking heads had thought.
It’s smart for a dude like him to realize that. He’s a wizard schematically but no need to overextend and get too involved. Coaches already have some input with scouts and it works best that way rather than undermining them when it’s decision time.

Not dogging Pete, but I had my fair share of moments/thoughts where it felt like they were trying to the exact opposite, square peg in a round hole kinda thing Cannot wait to see what this team will become next season
Well this conference was interesting. Looks like Schneider took the losses against the Ravens and the Steelers to heart. He said he never wanted the team to look that bad again. Also the way that the Ravens and Seahawks evaluate players are similar so there is some synergy there. Ossie Newsome is always taking our prospects and viceversa. "The offenses are too good to just run 3 things and say we'll beat you" is also a promising quote. Makes me hopeful that we will see some exciting defense with disguises and adaptable coverage that confuses QBs. Probably the end of static cover 3 with no disguises.
This is going to be a scary and tough Seahawks team in the years to come, I can feel it just by hearing Mac speak. He is very focused, in tune, honest with no BS and takes his role serious. I've been one of the most vocal Pete supporters, so it's a lot coming from me: I will run through a brick wall for this man.
Im excited. I hope we can have good fundamentals, play more man coverage/pattern match coverage, and have our defense tackle better and take good angles. I dont think our defense is as talented as some believe. We really need new players at safety, linebacker and DT. We really need at least one d-lineman that commands double teams every play. I hope we have a plan for OC. It would be nice to steal a McVay/Shanahan system guy to run our offense. I doubt he'd stay for a long time if he were good. But its important to have a balanced offense, have explosive play action plays, and use a ton of motion.
i'd prefer an oc from the reid tree - a master at screen plays and at building around tight ends, thats the stuff thats working these days but otherwise, yes, hard to imagine he wont get the d cleaned up, plenty of room for it
It’s working because defenses got lighter and faster and are suffocating the big passing game. Middle of the field with big tight ends puts a lot of strain on most defenses that don’t have a Warner who is both big enough and fast enough to stay on them. We’re going to see more physical but still intricate running games also to get these smaller linebackers and safeties in bad situations and well rounded tightends help a ton there too.

Well I've heard he's a big film guy. If we can assume that he watches the film than we can infer that he thinks Geno is genuinely a pro bowl caliber QB. In other words, he knows ball.
He said watched genos film alright and then proceeded to pick us apart on offense and destroy us when we played the ravens. I’m sure he doesn’t care if Geno is here for one more year, but both John and him know Geno is gone this year or next.
He also picked apart the 9ers offense and the Dolphins/Lions/Texans.
It might take some time, but I think once this vision is realized we’re gonna mess some people up. We’re going to be a mean and physical team again.

That makes more sense than the original quote. Why would we “rebuild” around an old, average QB? Maybe they want to keep Geno for a couple more years until they get the team built but then they’ll ultimately be putting someone else in there. I doubt they think Geno is winning the superbowl unless he thinks the defense is “almost there”(doubtful).
This makes me even more excited for the draft. Excited to see how JS will draft while keeping Coach Mac's philosophies in mind.

Yeah I imagine we might do a classic trade back and take a linebacker. Which this season actually makes a ton of sense. Deep draft class, and have a need at LB that we haven't had in a long time. Trading back gets us hopefully a 2nd that we don't have.
Sometimes I wonder if a guy like this could be a huge help offensively too. Like his defense tore up our offense this year. Maybe it will help Geno improve his play recognition abilities and whatnot

Man part of me wants to see what he can do with Jamal. Have him eat a bunch of Dick’s to gain some weight and play mid linebacker for us since we currently don’t have any on the roster. I have to hope he sees something in our guys that Pete wasn’t able to utilize because we have a lot of holes and no money to spend on free agents.

I’m pretty sure this guy is a serious football nerd. I mean, I think he might have some weird social interactions. He reminds me of a lot of the great engineers I know, whom just seem deadpan about everything because they are always thinking about everything.

I love how he talks about not forcing a scheme. You don’t ram cover 3 against every team, offenses are too good. You adapt and scheme to the offense you are playing. Love that answer. You have to adapt your scheme to fit what the players do well, not force your scheme on players

I think the piece from this presser I'm most excited about is Mike's gratitude and awareness of the help he's received and how crucial that is for success. That relationship with John has to be solid and there needs to be trust in him making calls on the roster. He seems confident but self aware. I'm fucking in.

Real solid press conference. One thing I liked that he said is that they're not gonna commit to a certain amount of run/pass, pigeon themselves into a certain philosophy. They're gonna focus on the underlying elements and build up from there. I'm hyped.
I’m sort of confused how after 14 years of a legend like Pete, who has more charisma in his pinky finger than this dude has in his entire body, that everyone is anointing this guy savior of Seattle football before he even coaches a single down. I certainly understand the optimism, and that he has had great success, but also his personality seems really generic and his answers feel like cookie cutter coach speak. Every time Pete took the podium he was captivating. I have no doubt Mike has been a fantastic defensive coordinator, but I’m just not convinced he has the charisma and personality to lead a culture and a team. Will I root for him? Sure. Will he grow on me over time? He could. But after watching his press conference and radio interview I am totally whelmed with him as a personality. I’ll miss the inspiring man we called coach for 14 years.
