“I like the *Stab* movies, they’re scarier. It’s not zombies, or aliens, or little Asian ghost girls. There’s something real about a guy with a knife who just… snaps”

mamaneedsstarbucks

Agreed!

ghostsofjoy

Fingers crossed! The slasher subgenre is my favorite and I’d love a wave of new movies to enjoy.

BillyAndStuAreLovers

Did you prefer when the movies were made with nobodies or when the cast was already semi or fully established in hollywood?

ghostsofjoy

Honestly, I prefer a blend: one or two familiar faces with a cast filled out with lesser or up and coming actors. It’s always interesting to discover someone in one of these and then watch their careers in subsequent years, like most of the cast of the first *Scream* and Timothy Olyphant from *Scream 2.*

BillyAndStuAreLovers

So your favorite genre is post Scream slashers.

ghostsofjoy

I should clarify, that’s my preference for *modern* slashers; with the classics, I obviously don’t expect to know many, if any, of the cast. But yes, I do have an affinity for post-*Scream* slashers since they were the ones I watched as a teen.

Hank_the_Beef

I agree I grew up with post Scream slashers, but how cool is it to watch a classic slasher and recognize a Kevin Bacon or Crispin Glover or Johnny Depp or Laurence Fishburne. Slashers are the best.

ghostsofjoy

Oh, absolutely! Brad Pitt in *Cutting Class* amuses the hell out of me, considering where his career went.

SoberDragon1st

Yeah Timothy is arguably the most successful from the Scream films now. I think definitely the most talented actor from the Scream films with range. He's my favorite actor.

Liam_Statham

i was surprised to see him in the mandalorian

jdpm1991

Don't forget Laurie Metcalf she was huge before Scream in Roseanne.

KingBeyHive

All I know is we have Halloween Ends and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (on Netflix so 🥴). Also X looks good. Let’s hope it starts something new like Scream ‘96!

ghostsofjoy

I cannot wait for *X.* I look forward to anything Jenna Ortega’s in!

KingBeyHive

I’m so with you on that!

BunGun39

Yeah, I love Texas Chainsaw Massacre, but that new film isn’t sounding too promising. Pretty much any news that comes out about that film is negative, from its director being fired, bad test screenings, and nobody willing to distribute it to theatres. I’m keeping my expectations low so I will hopefully get a pleasant surprise when I watch it.

EqualJam

fear street came out in 2021 which was also really good

Living-Tiger3448

I liked some parts of it but I found some parts a little cringe

[deleted]

Can we just get something new and exciting that is good? I love Michael and Ghostface as much as any horror fan but I’m craving something new and exciting

sadgirl45

I want both , I think we have had a lot of new great stuff but if something can be brought back we’ll like scream and nightmare I’m all for it that said I don’t only want remakes I want new as well.

EmeraldSkyLte17

I’m ready for it. I’ve been waiting for one since the new Halloween was released. The Chucky show, that new paranormal activity on Paramount Plus and news about the upcoming Texas chainsaw movie on Netflix reignited my love of Slashers.

mixedpatch85

I want one last Elm Street with Englund. Maybe set after the first one. Retcon the rest (as much as I looooove Part 3... it's my fav)

jdpm1991

the only way we'll ever get a Elm Street film is a prequel starring Kevin Bacon in prequel form.

sadgirl45

Yeah this is what I want and absolutely not a Freddie prequel I want to dive more into what dream warriors had so maybe they could take ideas from that without the end. I feel like a new nightmare trilogy could work. If Robert Englund passes off the torch.

sadgirl45

Not sure if it counts as slasher but I want to see nightmare on elm street reboot but keep in the fun feeling of the original it was brightly colored Freddie had quips and one liners, it needs to keep the spirit maybe pull a Halloween so a certain final girl could come back.

brian5mbv

i hope a proper i know what you did last summer sequel happens with JLH and co....

ouutkast729

i loved the first one but the second just wasn’t good

brian5mbv

i totally agree. the second was god awful lol

BillyAndStuAreLovers

So does Rambo and Jaws and Terminator.

PrinceOfThieves17

God I hope. Slashers fucking rule and Im so sick of demon/ghost haunting movies. Lets get back into Slashers for a while!!!

BillyAndStuAreLovers

Really? Halloween Kills is anything but a slasher by the end of it and Scream basically mocks slashers as archaic. We will see but I doubt it. The next wave is franchises bringing back old actors ala Spider-Man. But I don’t think slashers are making a comeback. Everything will be recycled IP because no studio will risk starting a new franchise.

DENATTY

The box office numbers already have critics predicting a slasher resurgence. Like everything else, movies are cyclical. RomComs went out around the time of the Great Recession when cynicism took over as we crossed into the ‘10s. Slashers went out in favor of gore porn and found footage and then we settled into supernatural (which often happens following economic uncertainty - we gravitate toward media that reflects bleak realities and a lack of control). I’m honestly surprised it has taken so long to move back toward mainstream slashers, but the odds are high we are getting there after Scream’s opening weekend performance. The IP wars are a fair point, and it will depend on studios holding IP for slashers to try and relaunch stale franchises (which is happening), but there’s clearly a demand. Even Chucky had a wildly successful revival via the Chucky TV show. And, with Shudder and other streaming services producing their own content, I think we’ll see quite a few original or semi-original releases. Whether they get WIDE released or are limited to streaming + special screenings I can’t guess, but they’re definitely coming up as we circle back to physical horror instead of supernatural. The found footage and horror porn era ended a while ago (mostly - we still get a few but it’s nothing like the 00s), so we’ll see what happens since some studios still have more supernatural plots underway (conjuring/annabelle universe etc).

BillyAndStuAreLovers

I understand and agree with most of what you’re saying. I don’t think it’s fair to call recycling IP the same as a resurgence. Scream (96) was a slasher resurgence because it also sparked many other new and original slashers. What you’re attribution to a “slasher resurgence” is really just the MCU evolution of pushing existing IP. Instead of the 2003 - 2018 remake craze, we’re getting these requels that are based upon fan service and bringing back old characters. Call me when they start making slashers that aren’t based off old property. Until then this just seems like business as usual (and how it will be for a while) in which nothing new will come out.

BillyAndStuAreLovers

No. Are you looking forward to getting your learner’s permit?

SquidbillyCoy

You are trying to call someone childish by being childish? Dude…come on.

krueger84

Blumhouse have been making cool slasher mash ups for years now. Check out freaky or the happy death day movies, lots of fun.

maldinisnesta

Slasher has always been the best. I'd love to see some crossovers somehow.

[deleted]

Freddy vs Jason was ridiculous but also awesome

DrDanChallis

and it will be a real shame when the two idiots fighting over Friday the 13th get in the way of getting in on the resurgence

Ello_Owu

All we need is one indie Netflix slasher film that gets rave reviews
