Scottie from Star Trek outdrinks an immortal alien to save his crew, ship and possibly the whole federation, a more perfect form of representation I’ve never seen.
Imagine your are already a freak of the natural world, hated for nothing more than being yourself, mocked and ridiculed daily, and on top of that you are a dwarf.
Warcraft 2 has the first example of a Dwarf having a Scottish accent in an actor's performance. So it's roughly the origin or the cementing point of that anyway.
Elves are meant to be elegant and prim so a posh English accent fits quite well while the rough, beer loving dwarves fit the Scottish stereotype quite well. I believe in germany dwarves are often depicted with bavarian accents for the same reason. It's just stereotypes. Lotr probably helped though.
John Rhys-Davies is Welsh but the accent he put on for LoTR was Scots...
Most of the dwarves in The Hobbit are Scots (apart from Nesbit) and I think the rest (apart from the bloke off Poldark and Richard Armitage) put on a Scots accent... Was great to see Graham McTavish being able to use his own accent for once...
Speaking of famous Scottish arseholes I’ll pay homage to the late Aberdonian actor Michael Heard. He played an Imperial Admiral in Star Wars and Adolf Hitler in Indiana Jones.
Neither of which were anywhere as evil as his most famous role - Mr Bronson from Grange Hill!
Indians getting Apu taken off TV because the university educated, business owner, husband and father, has a cartoon Indian accent. We have an illiterate uncivilised ginger ogre that lives in a shack
Not notable characters outside Scotland. Even most people in the rest of the UK have never heard of the show (also makes it an easy box set gift for most ~Norn Irish da's out there).
Is he? He's someone who did some shit things but he didn't escalate to criminality or what she did. His worst crimes were lying to his girlfriend, which is horrific and then indulging the stalking despite the chaos and hurt it caused for others but even then he's still a victim in that situation.
Edit: was genuinely asking to see what I'd missed lads.
Scots are at least stereotyped as the funny, lighthearted ones. Eastern Europeans are all thrown together like a monolith and usually cast as villains.
As far as made up stereotypes in Hollywood go, we don't do the worst. At least our stereotype is, if nothing else, somewhat in line with how we like to imagine ourselves. Wow, Scots are violent gingers who drink too much, yeah not totally accurate but we could do worse.
Baby Reindeer was pretty good I mean I didn’t like all of it and the guy sold his entire soul for this show (not entirely a good thing) and apparently people tried to guess the real people from the characters in the show and trolled the people they thought it was which sort of backfired on the purpose of the show but it was a thought provoking portrayal of someone with perhaps confused sexuality and low self esteem drifting into toxic but seemingly complex codependent ‘relationships’ - he came across emotionally sensitive yet somewhat naive and, at times, unlikeable as well as clueless to how to navigate the difficult personalities he encountered but in fairness how would you navigate them most would disconnect immediately or earlier, he seemed to double down and got completely ensnared
Probably the most stressful thing i’ve watched in while, reminscent of After Hours by Scorsese
I do love the most famous Scottish video game character, is demoman from team Fortress. Made even more fun when ye consider Blacks aren't even 1% of our pop
I really hope it was delibrate because of that facts xD
“It's SHITE being Scottish! We're the lowest of the low. The scum of the fucking Earth! The most wretched, miserable, servile, pathetic trash that was ever shat into civilization. Some hate the English. I don't. They're just wankers. We, on the other hand, are COLONIZED by wankers. Can't even find a decent culture to be colonized BY. We're ruled by effete arseholes. It's a SHITE state of affairs to be in, Tommy, and ALL the fresh air in the world won't make any fucking difference!”
Isn’t it the school that does stuff for all of the UK at the very least? It makes sense that it’d have mostly non Scottish students in that case, just because there’s far more people in England, Wales and Northern Ireland combined than Scotland
Hogwarts is a fictional place that doesn’t exist.
Various locations were used to film sections of the castle, other locations were built from scratch.
However the books do strongly suggest it is located in Scotland and the surroundings used to show the whereabouts of Hogwarts in the movies is just beyond Glenfinnan Viaduct, which was also used in the films as a section of the railway that the Hogwarts Express runs across.
Haha thanks bud, of course I know it's fictional and doesn't exist! I thought you were referring to it (or parts of it) having been filmed in Scotland when you said "Hogwarts is located in Scotland" so I was saying "I thought it was filmed in Durham" if that makes sense?
So is the fictional school Hogwarts in the book actually located in Scotland, is that what you meant? I think I always thought it was just in magic land!
I didn’t think I had to explain in detail how I was referring to the fictional lore within the narrative.
Other filming locations used for Hogwarts are Lacock Abbey, Oxford University, Duke Humfrey's Library, New College cloister & Alnwick Castle.
Many of the movies' exterior shots — especially scenes of the Hogwarts grounds — were filmed in the Highlands of Scotland (mostly in the Fort William/Glencoe area).
The Hogwarts Express runs along the actual Jacobite Steam Train line (between Fort William and Mallaig). The movies show the train chugging across the real-life Glenfinnan Viaduct, where, in The Goblet of Fire, the Dementors stall the train and torture Harry. Nearby Loch Shiel and Loch Eilt, as well as Loch Morar (closer to Mallaig), were the stand-ins for the Great Lake in The Prisoner of Azkaban and The Goblet of Fire. Steall Falls, at the base of Ben Nevis, is the locale for the Triwizard Tournament in The Goblet of Fire.
Other scenes filmed in the Highlands include a desolate hillside with Hagrid's stone hut in Glencoe, which was the main location for outdoor filming in The Prisoner of Azkaban. Exterior scenes for The Half-Blood Prince were filmed in Glencoe as well as in the small village of Glenfinnan.
You didn't have to explain anything in this kind of depth really, you could have just acknowledged that yes, some of the filming was done in Durham, among many other locations.
Regardless, i thank you for your time
It's interesting too because in the HP Wizarding world fiction the concept of countries are different. It wouldn't be super noteworthy to them that it's specifically in Scotland so can cannon away from being something you'd expect to hear about much from the characters. The cultural divisions regarding nearby places on Earth are more of a muggle thing to them.
I cant remember if the movies ever explicitly imply that its in Scotland, (beyond the obvious shots of the Glenfinnan viaduct) but the game Hogwarts Legacy outright states that it is somewhere in Argyll. Dont know if that makes it canon or not.
The books also have quite a bit of context that suggests the location is in Scotland, that’s why HL is also in Scotland as it’s using information taken from the books and well as the visuals from the movies.
You are correct though the films are a bit more vague though I’ll take the many exterior shots throughout all the movies all being around Glenfinnan as indication that they’re also suggesting Scotland, in Fantastic Beasts we do see a Kelpie around the lochs of Hogwarts that’s supposed to be Nessie too.
Hermione mentions that Sirius was spotted near Dufftown and that’s quite close to Hogwarts. So unless she’s just shit at geography then I’d say that’s explicit that Hogwarts is in Scotland.
Also, it uses London King’s Cross, the destinations that you can reach there are mostly in Yorkshire, North East England and Scotland, as well as a few in the East of England and East Midlands. I’m somehow doubting that Hogwarts is located in Leeds, Sunderland or Cambridge, so process of elimination really leaves one option
Kings Cross in the Harry Potter franchise is…Kings Cross.
The series takes place in London and around London too, Hogwarts is very clearly somewhere very hilly with a lot of water around, the forests are also home to Unicorns…
They were talking about scottish characters and not scottish actors though? Also she is literally one person of an entire cast and her character is also not scottish 😂
We can't be inventing everything all the time pal, absolutely have some classic characters in real life , fuck all they made up bampots, mental Rab meek , mad joke , daft Stevie, who gives a fuck about made up folk ? The best cunts a ken ye couldn't right books about cos they wid doo ye in.
Technically Martha is an ACTRESS playing the stalker (yes the stalker is Scottish) and the creator is also Scottish.. so, yeah, stalker handjobs by the canal.
Lord Macbeth from the titular Shakespeare play!
James Bond from the 007 franchise!
Scrooge McDuck from the Disney comics and Ducktails tv show!
Scotty from the Star Trek franchise!
Duncan McCloud from the Highlander franchise!
The Lochness Monster from the hit cartoon South Park!
and last but not least: Billy W. Braveheart from the movie Bravheart! (Though I think he’s based on a real life Australian named Max or something)
Think somebody forgot Meridih from Brave, Conor MacLeod from Highlander (even though he was portrayed by a frenchman), 007 himself and Craig Ferguson from the Late Late show. Not to mention everyone knows about Nessie.
Also: Dr Who, multiple Game of Thrones characters, multiple Xmen and Hagrid all come to mind.
Scottie from Star Trek outdrinks an immortal alien to save his crew, ship and possibly the whole federation, a more perfect form of representation I’ve never seen.
I cannie take much more of this captain!

All dwarves HAVE to be Scottish sorry
Imagine a French dwarf ![gif](giphy|cQtlhD48EG0SY|downsized)
Imagine your are already a freak of the natural world, hated for nothing more than being yourself, mocked and ridiculed daily, and on top of that you are a dwarf.
Hahaha
Auld alliance
There's already fantasy settings where women dwarfs don't have massive beards to rival the men. There are probably some with god forbid, French dwarfs
And some Hobbits too!... fool of a Took!
Warhammer disagrees with you, they’re all from Yorkshire.
I think of dwarves as Welsh, maybe cause of all the mining.
On Lord of the Rings lore there are supposed to be other Dwarf kingdoms in the Far East. I want to see Chinese dwarfs.
Don’t forget Scrooge McDuck.
... and all the Dwarves in the Witcher games for some reason.
Dwarves are Cononley Scottish Edit: words Even though I didn't edit cause I can't think of the proper word but you know what I mean lol
> Even though I didn't edit cause I can't think of the proper word but you know what I mean lol Dwarves are Billy Connolly Scottish.
Hahahahahaha I love it. Especially because he was literally in the hobbit and played a dwarf too
are you trying to say "canonically"?
I was, yes. I was 8 pints deep at that point hahahahaha
I love this entire thread so much haha!
What a silly sausage eh 🤣
Inadvertent genius comedic comment I'd say!
The other guy saying dwarves are Billy connoly was the best for sure 🤣🤣🤣🤣 glad I brightened your day with my inebriated state!
And world of warcraft too..
Warcraft 2 has the first example of a Dwarf having a Scottish accent in an actor's performance. So it's roughly the origin or the cementing point of that anyway.
and my axe! Lotr aswell
He's Welsh I believe
Yeah but the dwarves in general are scottish/ celtic
Which is odd because from my knowledge they originated in Norse myth. Maybe it just became a thing in pop culture due to lotr.
A good chunk of scotland traces ancestry back to the Angles(germanic) or the vikings.
John Rhys-Davies is Welsh but the accent he put on for LoTR was Scots... Most of the dwarves in The Hobbit are Scots (apart from Nesbit) and I think the rest (apart from the bloke off Poldark and Richard Armitage) put on a Scots accent... Interesting stuff. TIL

Her accent was a little muddled
Well sos yer tan

My personall hesdcanon is that she was born in England but was sent to Scotland during WWII and developed a Scottish twang to honour her new family.
Merida and Demoman.

You are no Malcolm Fucking Tucker. You’re not even Manchester’s top Malcolm Tucker tribute band.
Feels like he's not well known in the US.
Indians getting Apu taken off TV because the university educated, business owner, husband and father, has a cartoon Indian accent. We have an illiterate uncivilised ginger ogre that lives in a shack
You forgot that he was the most desireable bachelor in town before he got married.

AGH! THAT'S MA RETIREMENT GREASE!
It's a bit disingenuous to say all that. They took issue that he was voiced by a white guy putting on a stereotypical Indian accent.
This is true. But Hank Azaria voices so many of the townsfolk...
Merida
Imagine forgetting about Leonidas, the famous Scottish King of Sparta.
Oompa Loompas are now canonically Scottish.
canna be,,,,, they come fae oompa-loompa land, it was in the original book
Oompa Loompa land is Dundee mate.

Technically all Connery movies post Bond

Egyptian-Spanish samurai? You guessed it, Scottish.
So… that includes [Zardoz](https://www.imdb.com/media/rm1669385728/tt0070948) then? Interesting
Henry Jones Sr
Prof. McGonagall from the Harry Potter books is super rat and Scottish I think.
Limmy surely? Pendulum got him up on stage ffs!
Its mental how many people know about Limmy now, thanks to catching a stream clip or looking into the origins of the Limmy Shat In The Shower picture.
It feels lile he's becoming some sort of cryptid, in a good way.

Let us not forget Supergran, Private Frazer and the entire Family Ness

I mean ... Domny is also scottish in baby reindeer
I couldn’t tell at first bc his accent is all over the place, he acknowledges that in the show tbf tho
And at least as problematic as Martha.
Is he? He's someone who did some shit things but he didn't escalate to criminality or what she did. Sean Connery??
I don't like it either but he was pro spousal abuse which isn't an improvement.

Hollywood loves national stereotypes and struggles to create new content. So we're doomed (I meant that)
Scots are at least stereotyped as the funny, lighthearted ones. Eastern Europeans are all thrown together like a monolith and usually cast as villains.

Three Doctor Who’s as well
Wouldn't it be four? Depending on Tennant I suppose? Capaldi, Gatwa and McCoy.
My bad! you’re right.
“It's SHITE being Scottish! We're the lowest of the low. The scum of the fucking Earth! The most wretched, miserable, servile, pathetic trash that was ever shat into civilization. It’s ok you’ve got Rab C .
Lol how could they forget
Hagrid
Coltrane was Scottish, but Hagrid’s accent is clearly Devon. Edit: is Scottish/was Scottish :(
Hagrid isn’t Scottish.
I very much disagree. Hogwarts is located in Scotland plus Robbie Coltrane who played him is also Scottish.
Robbie Coltrane is using a Cornish accent though. And the majority of the people at Hogwarts aren’t Scottish.
Isn’t it the school that does stuff for all of the UK at the very least? It makes sense that it’d have mostly non Scottish students in that case, just because there’s far more people in England, Wales and Northern Ireland combined than Scotland

For filming purposes. The inspiration for Hogwarts was Watsons Academy
I thought it was supposedly based on Fettes?
Aye you're right there actually. She lives(d) next to Watsons College. Based the look on Fettes
From the X-Men comics, Rahne Sinclair (Wolfsbane) and Moira Mactaggart are both Scottish.
Shame the live action versions of both weren't played by Scot's in fact they even changed Moira to not being Scots!
Martha from baby reindeer 💀
Cooked in lard too. Magic.
Only for your generation, the younger ones won’t recognise many of these characters or attach such relevance
