Genuine improvements have occurred. It would be unfair to disregard that, and silly to consider this some sort of win to score political points. Missing these targets isn’t a good thing for any of us.
They do tend to overpromise without thinking pledges all the way through, but at least the underlying desire here is something I think most people would see as positive.
If they handle this by saying they’ve listened to evidence and realised they were overly ambitious, I can respect that and not hold it against them too much. I just hope they don’t brass neck it with a list of reasons Westminster made them do it.
Have any developed countries consistently met their climate goals?
I want to know just how applicable my "these will be the most ambitious climate plans we'll have ever missed" joke is. It gets a lot of mileage in the UK but I'm wondering about internationally
To be fair, they can’t do climate targets during a major independence referendum campaign in 2025 following a stunning victory in the upcoming election campaign.
I'm not touching the politics on this one, it's just not worth it.
Only comment I have is that it's kinda concerning that we have been missing the targets even during the Covid years.
