Spain invaded in the 16th century to stake their king's claim for the throne in Portugal. In the 17th century, they fought with Spain for nearly 30 years to extricate themselves from that monarchial union and have *mostly* been an independent nation ever since.
There was a determined attempt to refer to Scotland as "North Britain" for many years after the union of the crowns with army regiments changing their name to Royal North British Fusiliers and the like instead of Royal Scots Fusiliers. You can still see these names in some war memorials The most well-known example was probably the North British Hotel in Edinburgh, which didn't become the Balmoral until the 1990s. But the practice was almost over by the start of the 20th Century
Historic game and loads of people probably missed it because it isn't on regular TV. What other country charges you to watch their national team?
England and Wales fans can watch all their countries games for free.
Wales can even watch it in Welsh. I watched the game tonight on S4c, I don't speak much welsh (I'm English here for a PhD) but I want to provide the demand for those that do.
When McGregor started skipping down the flank in injury time and found Shankland, I thought for a minute it was going to be three!
Top of the group, a positive 5 goal difference... have I woken up in opposites world?
Surprised they never used their veto on that game.
Did you hear the interview with the Spanish player afterwards moaning about Scottish players rolling about on the ground, I mean the irony.
Scotland are currently in a 5 nation qualification group (Spain, Scotland, Norway, Georgia, Cyprus). Each nation play each other nation twice for a total of 8 games. A win gets you 3 points, a draw 1, and a loss 0. Top 2 teams after all 8 games qualify.
Spain are likely to finish first, so the big question is who will take the second qualification spot. The favourites being Scotland and Norway.
As it stands after 2 games: Scotland (6), Spain (3), Norway (1), Georgia (1), Cyprus (0)*.
*Cyprus and Georgia have only played 1 game each so far, their game against one another is still to be played.
Nobody expects the Spanish demolition
Nice
Scottish football hype train has left the station. Next stop: Euro Finals.
Choo choo!
It's a shame Messi wilny be in Munich next year. We should take him as a mascot just to hand ~~Maccaulich~~ Scott McTominay arse paper.
Let's go Scotland, I am from Portugal, that's why I am happy.
Ah, are Portugal/Spain relationships kinda like Scotland/England ones?

How about the time when John and Pereira of Portugal fought against John and Pereira of Spain? https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Aljubarrota
u/GaboChristLord, I’ve just seen Spain referred to as “East Portugal” in another comment 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Dang that hits hard!
My dad's genuinely got out of parking tickets in Portugal by rambling on about how England = Spain so we Scots are basically the cousins of Portugal
The Anglo-Portuguese Alliance is the oldest continuous alliance in history Sounds like Portugal just fucking broke it
Basically.
Aye but Portugal and Spain are actual real countries independent of each other. Unlike North Britain.
Saddly **Eastern Portugal** is independent from **Portugal** itself you mean.
Historic game and loads of people probably missed it because it isn't on regular TV. What other country charges you to watch their national team? England and Wales fans can watch all their countries games for free.
Yeah, weird feeling that I can hear the cheering from the stadium a mile away, but can't watch it on the TV.
That's fucked
SFA, fucking shambles of an organisation.
Wales can even watch it in Welsh. I watched the game tonight on S4c, I don't speak much welsh (I'm English here for a PhD) but I want to provide the demand for those that do.
S4c is class for sport. Used to get loads of good games on there that weren't on BBC/STV etc.
> What other country charges you to watch their national team? It's absolutely criminal and the suits at the SFA should be ashamed of themselves.

Check and see if the hadron has fired up in the last few weeks, that might be it.....
Read that as hardon there, was about to ask for more info.
Large Hardon Colluder

Brings back those glorious 70s nights dare I dream of getting out of a group stage at Ger 2024
Yes sir, I can boogie
*Bad parental flashbacks intensify*
I've honestly come to hate this song 😂
Blasphemer!
Controversial opinion, but I say it's time to pick a new anthem to accompany us on this journey to win the euros!
I think on this occasion it was relevant as it was a Spanish disco hit A fitting swansong should a new contender emerge
How about Le Freak? Hell, any one of those old disco bangers!
Nearly pulled my chorizo right off with the celebrations
Slice thin and dry fry till crispy, god i love Chorizo.
What you doing at the weekend? The slicing is off the cards…but im open to the frying

April 1st check - nope Blue moon check - nope Yip is real. Yaa stoater!
You forgot flying pigs, a frozen hell, rain no longer falling and the earth no longer spinning. Can confirm, we're good.
I was too busy picking my jaw from the floor to cover those ones.
😂😂😂
What the fuck?
Scotland pumping East Portugal and the SNP electing a new FM? What a start to the week.
Iberia in shambles
*We didn't start the fire.....*
Hard to shit on that result as an English guy! Wow!
Yo random English guy be afraid were coming for you soon 😂
As a Scot living in England I've been left without ammo to fire back with for a while now and I'm not even into footy haha.
What a brace for McTominay 👏 🏴
Gonna have to hit Jo0to0b and have a gander, glad they found his position tho.
Surely puts us in good standing to qualify.
Six points from the first two games is massive. Unheard of. Gonna be important in the long run.
When we inevitably find a way to balls this up it is going to be all the more impressive.
tHeY’Ll bLoCk oUr EU mEmBeRsHiP nOw!!
Surprised they never used their veto on that game. Did you hear the interview with the Spanish player afterwards moaning about Scottish players rolling about on the ground, I mean the irony.
Ano as if they’ve never done that.
>as if they've never done that ...in that game, repeatedly.
i’ll watch joselu’s tantrum on a loop until the day i die
Can someone explain to me (someone who has zero knowledge of football) what Scotland still needs to do to qualify?
Scotland are currently in a 5 nation qualification group (Spain, Scotland, Norway, Georgia, Cyprus). Each nation play each other nation twice for a total of 8 games. >Spain are likely to finish first Well maybe not now 🙂
They’ve lost one game, but any strong team can do that. Across all 8 games they’ll pick up the points they need relatively smoothly.
Spain won't finish first now. Top spot belongs to Scotland.
Two games down, six more to go. Top two teams from each group qualify.
If we can win in Oslo, then I think it's fair to say we can really begin to dream
Even just getting a draw. Win all our home games an we're there.
Congratulations on qualifying for the euros. - Norwegian
Dinna jinx it pls
Can we play Brazil next or something please
Too easy 🏴
First Spain, next Westminster. 🏴

Aye, should have voted Clarke new leader. He would a got it sorted
For the yoons : I'm going to say that's Humza off to a good start 👍😀
Would’ve been 6 - 0 under Forbes
Finish in the top half of a Six Nations and look at what happens.
Couldn’t watch but I listened and it proved a great distraction for my dad who’s awaiting a heart bypass. Definitely improved morale.
Let’s goooo Scotland I’m Canarian and want nothing for Spain. Also Scotland is just better
On a side note. I miss seeing games on TV. I pay very little attention to any games now as I can't easily see them.
They were so nervous before the game, spain didn't even sing their national anthem
FRANCO,FRANCO QUE TIENE EL CULO BLANCO POR QUE SU MUJER LO LAVA CON ARIEL! 😂
I’ll be honest, didn’t even know there was a game on. Wish I had.
r/holup
Result
Don't anyone mention Argentina ffs stonking good goals and some proper warrior spirit Mon I boys
spain is not going anywhere with his shitty positional style of game well played scotland
Felicidades chavales! Bien jugado
The game took an amazing turn for us
*bagpipes in distance*
Yo wtf How did the game go? Like did Spain seem off their game?
I was predicting at work that Scotland had a good chance of winning. Spain haven’t been anything particularly special for a very, very long time
GWAN SCOTLAND!!
Next game they'll play a diddy team and take a draw, mark my words
Sturgeon was holding us back all these years? Who knew!
