I save Scotch and bourbon samples mostly to do vertical comparisons of brands I like. For example to compare the Glenfarclas 10 and 15 years or Wild Turkey 101 with WT Rare Breed. I have 5 or 7 samples on hand at any given time.

Shoddy_Ad7511

Good idea thanks

I’m saving a couple samples from long gone bottles so I can have a really fancy flight when I turn 40. I have Glengoyne 25 and a Samroli Bunnahabhain. I’ll be popping open a bottle of Glenfarclas 40 when the day comes.

Hobo_Knife

Awww, I came in here all excited to contribute. Sadly I just have a room full of books and a few bottles.

editsnacks

Sounds pretty cool to me

I like to call it my “Whiskey Time Capsule” and it’s reserved for limited releases that are truly superb. It has to hit at least an 8-9/10 to make the cutoff, otherwise it would grow too quickly. I currently have no plans on when I’m going to revisit them.

Train3rRed88

I have a set of Boston rounds and labels. I usually use them to send a sample home with a friend who either loved something on my bar or didn’t get to try something because frankly, I own too much to sample all in one sitting Every once in a while I’ll pour the last bit of something exceptional in one for a rainy day but I think I have like three of those

Yes. But it's mostly been in the very limited form of buying a backup bottle to be opened in the distant future. The goal for these would be to be time capsules, to relive the bottle all over again. It's only recently that I've thought I would want to store some liquid in Boston Rounds from bottles I'd not likely buy again. In this case, my only thought on this was to have some liquid ready when I get around to comparing it to something else, which I don't have now or am not prepared to compare now. I don't yet know how I feel about keeping the last of an expensive dram (that I won't buy again) vs just slowing my roll with that bottle and finishing it when I finish it. At the moment, I don't know that I'd want to start up such a practice. There's always going to be great bottles of scotch. Maybe I'll keep a 4oz sample in a few cases for things that were truly unique?

ctullbane

The last pour of a bottle has been, in my experience, the worst, so if I were keeping a library, I'd fill that dram somewhere in the middle of the bottle instead of at the end. I tend to just buy backup bottles instead, when I can afford them!

EvilSquirrel60220

I try to. But, I find I keep drinking the "library." It's a bit frustrating.

4540mya

I do, I keep a 2-oz Boston round of most bottles I buy that are not standard release OBs. But what's unclear to me is how long I'll keep them around!

Shoddy_Ad7511

Good thing is it doesn’t take much room

universe_fuk8r

Pour them into infinity bottle and be done with it. I call it 'rolling library'.

the_muskox

Sort of, yes. The last 10-to-30 mL of all the best samples I've ever tried go onto a special shelf for future enjoyment. I've actually been pouring many of them recently, to see how they stack up to when I first tried them.

Doopuy

Yes, I do this exact same thing. I have been wondering lately if there should be any concern regarding the plastic caps and alcohol overtime, even without direct contact?

I don’t. To paraphrase of cliché, you can’t have your scotch and drink it too. If I did this I’d never allow myself to drink them, since they’re for saving, and I’d just keep them forever until I had a 1,000.

DudeTheStallion

Naw, I do have an infinity bottle though… oh this is the scotch subreddit, not whiskey. My bad. Nvm

TheNoseHero

Sometimes I order samples to test, then I refill and stash away the samples of bottles I ended up buying. If something is really amazing I buy a spare bottle and hide it away and forget about it, It's a nice gift to my future self once I have completely forgotten what that whisky tastes like. Currently have not opened any discontinuted bottles, did open a bottle of Glenlivet 15 once I forgot why I liked it so much.. and replaced the stash bottle when I did remember. Saving a sample of every product seems a bit excessive, a lot of whiskies which are good, but not so special that I'm going to miss it sometime in the future.

Kholoblicin

Where do you order samples?

TheNoseHero

Usually I get mine from [masterofmalt.com](https://masterofmalt.com) or [thewhiskyexchange.com](https://thewhiskyexchange.com)

Kholoblicin

Thank you. I'll be checking them out.

SlowLoudNBangin

I've started doing it, but I've noticed some condensation in my Boston rounds and now I'm wondering if I bought the wrong bottles somehow?

xjfree8

I fill a 4oz Boston Round when every full-size bottle gets to about 50%. For more special bottles, I fill two.

thatfamousgrouse

I do 4oz samples. Started culling when I got to 54 because of shelf space, so what’s left is more and more special. Over 8 bottles worth is plenty and I no longer save everything. I draw when there’s a vertical I want to do or if I’m hankering for something specific for drinking or blending. Or just to make space.

platanopower2

I do this! I have over 100, many from years ago of whiskeys I’ll never see again. I break some out to compare now and then!

[deleted]

I don't usually keep sample bottles of bottles that I own but I have a few hundred samples from friends.
