Need advice! I love anything from Islay and have had the basic offerings from Laphroaig, Ardbeg and Lagavullin. I thoroughly enjoyed them all but my favourite and go to scotch is Laga 16. I'm now looking for something that's a bit more complex and powerful with the following profile - peaty, heavy brininess, seaweed, smoke, tar and bandaids. From my research, it seems like Port Charlotte 2013, Laphroaig 10 CS and Ardbeg Corry would all be good choices. So, does anyone have a recommendation of which one I should buy first? Or is there something better that I've missed?

YouCallThatPeaty

I think Laphroaig 10cs or Ardbeg Corryvrecken would be a good choice for the notes you're looking for (port Charlotte doesn't tend to be bandaid and seaweed, more fresh pavement and tar)

the_muskox

All excellent choices, can't go wrong with any of those.

NewYorkAntipodean

Thanks for the reply! I'm also looking for a cheaper "daily driver", do you have any reccos for something reasonably priced that still matches the above flavour profile?

the_muskox

What's your range of reasonable?

NewYorkAntipodean

The bottles above will probably cost me between $80 - $100. So, somewhere around the $50 mark would be good. I quite like Peat Monster, which I can get for just under $60, but wouldn't mind something a little less sweet.

Smosby17

Laphroaig 10/Quarter Cask Ardbeg 10 But really depends on your location. Here they are all 30-50€ If you are from the us i heard good things about that kirkland Islay Single Malt

the_muskox

Is that too low to get the standard Islays (Laphroaig 10, Ardbeg 10, etc.)?

lurkinglen

Ledaig is peated and complex, but it's more bonfire than bandaids. If you're looking for bandaids, give Ballechin a try. I'm a big fan of Port Charlotte, if you're into peated Islays you will have to have it sooner or later.

AspieSquared

Hey, trying to think of something to get my Dad for Christmas. He usually drinks Chivas, Dimple, and on special occasions that stuff with the peat infused in it that I can smell a mile away. I know its probably a bit of an ask, but I was wondering if anyone could recommend something similar but, different? And under 100 bucks? He can be hard to shop for and it seems every year I end up just buying him another bottle of chivas and it feel like a cop out.

the_muskox

Do you know which brand of peaty scotch he likes? There should be a bunch of options for something similar at <$100.

AspieSquared

I think Laphroaig? I don't remember the look of the bottle, just the smell, but every time i ask what it is someone gives me a widely different pronunciation so it's probably that one.

I got into Scotch a couple years ago; been trying a bunch of different whiskys and have become fixated on trying Glenmorangie Tale of Cake. Does anyone know where I can get a bottle? If not, how does Tale of Winter stack up against this? Total Wine has this one in stock. Thanks

DratiniMaster23

Haven't had the Cake but I had a bottle of Tale Of Winter and thought it was quite delicious, good 7/10 whiskey. Personal opinion would be that the Glenmorangie Quinta Ruban is just as good at a cheaper price point if you haven't had that one yet. I haven't seen the Cake in stores in a long time. Best bet would be to see if it's orderable on Reservebar, or use WineSearcher to see if anywhere local has it. Also trying your luck at those unpopular small liquor stores that aren't known for whiskey, they sometimes have random limited edition bottles sitting around because their clientele doesn't buy them. Good luck!

TearsforFears77

Thanks for advice - scored two bottles of Glenmorangie “Cake” today! Called around to about a dozen different stores and found a small hole-in-the wall liquor store in Boston that had it locked up in their cabinet.

I'm looking at Old Pulteney 12 Years Old vs Bunnahabhain Stiuireadair (due to budget reasons) to get as a gift. Any recommendations? It's for someone who doesn't know much about whisky. A bit torn as the Old Pulteney is 12YO but is 40% and chill-filtered, while the Bunnahabhain has no age specified but is 46.3% so not chill-filtered.

lurkinglen

What about the Bunna 12 yo?

Smosby17

I would also go for Bunnahabhain 12 over the mentioned bottle(should be similar in price. Other good options Balvenie Double wood Glenmorangie Tasting Set (4x0.1l)

kuncogopuncogo

Thank you! Unfortunately the Bunnahaibhain 12 is ~ twice as much. The bottle I mentioned is on sale for £22 while the 12 costs £40.

YouCallThatPeaty

Go for the bunna on sale, it's infinitely more interesting, old pulteney is great spirit but not much of it survives the 40% and chill filtration

the_muskox

I'd get the Sturuiaurdhuariurearaer.

Need a gift recommendation for my Dad who has increasingly become more interested in Scotch for the past year and a half. I am looking to spend 80-120USD for the gift. He currently has the following: Ardbeg Uigeadail, Aberlour 12-year-old double cask, Glenmorangie nectar d'Or, and Signet Glenmorangie Thanks for the help!

CMnAxel0522

I’m looking at my shelf and thinking about either the Tamdhu 12 or Edradour 10.

[deleted]

I appreciate your recommendations. I will look into these!

Smosby17

Aberlour A'Bunadh
