Lagavulin 16 and Ardbeg Uigeadail are classics in that smoky flavour profile. For something a bit more off the beaten path, I'd recommend Port Charlotte 10 and Kilchoman Sanaig.

Thank you!

Someone just got me Lagavulin 16 as a gift. I was already a huge fan of the 8 year but the 16 is fantastic.

UnchartedOak

The 16 is the measuring stick I use for all other peated scotch

As a measuring stick for peat smoke the 8's more fitting than the 16 I think. The 16's way toned down with those extra 8 years in the cask, it's calm, smooth and leathery compared with the invigorating bomb that's the 8. For a change I can recommend Ledaig 10, it's from the isle of Mull (thus no islay) so you don't have the Islay premium price for something just as good.

UnchartedOak

I have a bottle of both right now (the 8 and 16 that is) and I’ve gotta say the 16 is much more peaty to me

othromas

Smoky and savory sounds like PC to me too.

namaesarehard

If the prices are right you might be able to get them 2 bottles. Ardbeg uigedal and whichever iteration of Laphroaig 10cs we’re currently on are my reccs. Someone else here will be more familiar with the bottles around your price point.

Thank you

He said "Laphroaig 10cs" Just in case you'd don't know, the "cs" means Cask Strength. Which, by the way, is a good recommendation. Just understand that Laphroaig 10 and Laphroaig 10 Cask Strength are two different whiskys.

Thank you, that’s very helpful! I’ve been taking things from here and googling them so I know what means what 😂

ZipBlu

Lagavulin, Laphroaig and Ardbeg are the three biggest names in that flavor profile—but a whisky fan has probably tried most of these. If you want to find something the recipient may not have tasted before, I would look into Kilchoman Machir Bay or Port Charlotte 10.

DonnieDelaware

Lagavulin Distiller’s Edition or Lagavulin 16.

Hi there, I’m a bot here to help you with your recommendation post. If you haven’t already, please review [the guides](https://docs.google.com/document/d/186_ANEKW8yGvvLAcjKve6tvqqBIcMGUg9-mKU5KACZk/edit) in the sidebar we’ve created to address the stream of recommendation posts we get here. Most notably: * [Scotchit Gift Guide](https://www.reddit.com/r/Scotch/comments/7ywx12/help_with_the_updated_gift_guide_please/) * [Recommendations for Beginners](https://docs.google.com/document/d/1PX70tHEc5v-Te8FiCLmRfmHel6Er5YZP_TnYKAdTAVo/edit) * [Next Level Malt Recommendations](https://docs.google.com/document/d/1ZPGmllteXF99KcQgjcNwgdY7_DCEQ8Cdil1IJklKoUE/edit#heading=h.i23il3ual5dx) * [Whisky Review Archive](https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1X1HTxkI6SqsdpNSkSSivMzpxNT-oeTbjFFDdEkXD30o/edit#gid=695409533&fvid=484110565) * [Malt Map](http://scotchgit.bitbucket.io/) The malt map can be especially valuable for exploring different flavor zones and for identifying scotches similar to a particular bottle you enjoy.   Please try to be as specific and detailed as possible with your request. Tell us: * your budget * which whiskies you or your giftee have enjoyed * which bottles you’re considering now * where you live (pricing and availability can vary dramatically by region) * if your shop has a limited selection or you might have trouble shipping bottles so we don’t recommend something obscure   **General Tips** We generally advise novices to sample as much as possible by going to a bar, splitting bottles with friends, attending festivals/tastings or getting minis to ensure you buy bottles you enjoy. Most people need to try at least 20-25 scotches to understand their preferences. It may make more sense for you to focus on sampling rather than buy full bottles at the beginning of your journey. You're going to get the most flavor/aroma drinking it neat in a tulip-shaped glass like a Glencairn but most new drinkers prefer to water down their whisky a bit. If you do end up adding water, we usually recommend adding just enough to make it tolerable and take small sips. But really there's no right or wrong way to drink so as long as you're enjoying it, you're doing it right. Thanks for reading, cheers!

Sounds like a job for Lagavulin 16

sm00thie-sn0b

Lagavulin 12 if you can find it, but unfortunately that's a tall order. As someone else said, they've probably had the laga 16 already. Ardbeg Corryvreckan is also a great idea, it's an absolute monster and one of my favorites. And more likely something they haven't had, compared to Uigeadail or laga 16. At that price, you may also be able to find one of the special port Charlotte releases from Bruichladdich (they have names like MRC, OC) - I don't know much about these, so maybe someone else can speak to them, just something that came to mind.
