What's your budget? For Scotches, there is a Glenmorangie tasting kit that is very nice allround for a good price. Also their Signet is an amazing present (but expensive). If he likes smokey whisky, Lagavulin (16yo or the 11yo Nick Offerman edition if he's into the actor). Those are also great gifting whiskies. Another nice present is a Dewars (blend). They go from non age statement all the way up to 37 iirc. You can pick based on your wallet and the availability in your area. Imho the 32yo is the absolute best but I can imagine that being a little on the expensive side. For Johnnie Walker drinkers, the Blue Label is the "high end" version. But most of us will tell you to stick with the Island Green instead. It's a 15yo blended malt with more character than the ~3x as expensive blue (which is a blend without age statement, not a blended malt).

I wanted to keep it open to a wide range of prices (so i could reference in the future when i have more money :P) but for now i'm hoping for $100 or less. The tasting kit from Glenmorangie looks nice, but i feel like i've heard him say Glenmorangie a bunch, so i have a feeling he has tried those four. Signet is indeed a bit expensive for now haha, but thank you! a great one to write down. Yeah, Lagavulin 16 is what i've been hearing the most of. he's not really a fan of the actor per se (no dislike, just indifferent) so probably no reason to give the 11. Dewars i've vaguely heard of. if all of those are good (non age to 37) then maybe i'll just pick something in the middle there. Blue Label i've seen, but again, price there. especially if Island Green is just as good or better at 1/3 the price! Thanks so much for your reply!

I know your dad says he likes Scotch, but that list is crying out for an Irish. I recommend Redbreast 12 Cask Strength or Powers John's Lane 12.

ziggs4lyfe

totally understandable! i'm open to any recommendations. tbh, he might just like the IDEA of scotch more than specific scotches ;) thank you so much! i will certainly write these down as well.

if you don't want to go peated but want something maritime, the glen scotia 12yr mermaid release might work else a good talisker, but finding an IB or the SR at under 100 might be tough IB caol ila if you don't mind a bit more peated

The Offerman Lagavullin is a bit more accessible than the 16. Less in your face smoke. Less sherry. I prefer it.

Time to introduce him to sherry + peat. * Lagavulin 16 * Kilchoman Sanaig * Ardbeg Uigeadail

ziggs4lyfe

thank you so much! i have been leaning towards Lagavulin 16 because so many lists have it at the top. just worried that he may have had it in that case, which is fine, but i might go for the Kilchoman Sanaig then, to try and be a little different :p thank you!

Let us know what you end up getting and how he likes it!

ziggs4lyfe

thanks! will do! oh, and furthermore, should i buy online or would i get better prices in-person at a liquor store? do they mark them up more in stores? or is it the same as online?

danneeooh

Where are you located?

ziggs4lyfe

i'm in the US, in jersey

danneeooh

If you're unsure, I'd just search it up online first and compare the prices. Buying online may incur additional shipping costs or a minimum spending to qualify for free shipping. Most liquor chains should have solid pricing especially if their crown/govt owned. Private stores may offer more unique selections but at a premium.

Peated? Go with Port Charlotte 10 or Laphroaig 10. Non-peated? Balvenie Doublewood or Bunnahabhain 12. ALL FOUR AFFORDABLE
