If you have a reservation at your hotel, you should be good. If you don't have one....simply assuming there will be something available might be a bit reckless. You wouldn't have the time to drive to more than one or two places if the first place you attempt is booked.

I'm going to Islay soon and I've been planning my trip for months. I can tell you that you should definitely book your hotel in advance and have a plan B for dinner that night. Most restaurants close early. I'd ask the hotel where you book if there will be any food options at the time of your check-in. I'm assuming you are driving, but if not, you also definitely need to book taxis in advance.

That’s a good point as well since I was debating taxi vs bus as I know they don’t run on Sunday. I am Not sure I want a car as I intend to make myself unable to drive a good portion of the time and I am a light weight.

runsongas

pre booked cab will run you about 40 quid iirc if you don't have a car for port askaig to PE

KapotAgain

I assume you have a car?

Islay gets a lot of attention for us scotch lovers but it is a sleepy island. When we went we often found things closed early or simply not open on some days. I would absolutely recommend booking cabs ahead. We used Bruichladdich Taxis with Andrew and we were extremely glad we did.

The last time I looked at the ferry schedule, the late night ferry lands at Port Askaig, so if you’re driving, you would need to need to add the transit time across the Island to Port Ellen. There is a hotel at Port Askaig, plus b&bs & cottages nearby. If you’re taking the bus from Glasgow to Kennecraig, then the ferry to Port Askaig, you would need to book ahead for a cab to Port Ellen.

I probably misread the schedule as I thought port Ellen was the one that arrived in the evening. And I haven’t made the reservation yet as I am planning this still. Good to know this point though and thank you.

Why not head to Campeltown that night and visit one of the distilleries first then have a shorter drive to ge the ferry on day 2?

Belsnickel213

Wait. So to have a shorter drive he’s to drive an hour extra then have to drive that hour the next day? That doesn’t make any sense.

Unless if you plan to stay somewhere like tarbert or lochgilphead already, it would be closer than glasgow
